Introduction to the MobileMapper System The Mobil eMapper system from Thales Navigation is com- posed of two main elements: the MobileMa pper receiver and MobileMapper Office software runni ng on a PC-type com- puter .
.
1. MobileMapper Field Unit Keypad Descri ption Under the screen you will see 8 bu ttons located aroun d a large oval “scrolling” b utton with 4 d irectional arrows on i t. IN/OUT : Us e these but- tons to zoom in and out when viewing a screen with a map dis played.
Install ing the Batteries MobileMapper uses two AA batteries that are installed from th e back throug h the bat- tery cover . T o remove the bat- tery cov er, push the two buttons on the cover fully to the left and lift the battery cover away fro m the receiver .
Setting t he Scree n Backlight The screen backlight can be set to one of three levels (low , high or of f). At power on, the screen backli ght is set to hig h level.
Init ial izatio n for F irst -Time Us e MobileMapper will walk you through the process of setting up the receiver for first time use. This procedure is common- ly referred to as “Initializing the Receiver”. The purpose of this initialization is to provide MobileMapper with a general knowledge of its approximate lo cation.
3. If yo u understand and agr ee to the warning present ed, press ENTER before the 10 secon d s have elapsed. Other- wise, the unit will shut off. A message box is then dis- played indicating that the unit needs to be initialized . 4. Press ENTER. The unit asks you to select your r egion and area.
6. T o complete the initialization process, press ENTER again. The Satellite Status screen is d isplayed and MobileMapper begins acquiring the data from satellites. W atching the bars appear and turn solid on the screen, you can progressively see the unit lock onto satellites.
GIS Dat a Logging Functions Feature Librar ies Feature libraries contain lists of featu res that you should b e visitin g during your field sess ions. Features are four types: - Point feature: The geo m etrical representation of this fea- ture is a point.
Logging New G PS/GIS Data Prior to starting logging GIS da ta, be sure MobileMapper is computin g your position w hen you s tand near the first fea- ture yo u want to log.
The Logging screen is now displayed where you can see the list of attributes pertaining to this feature. Y ou will now enter the “Description” phase of the feature - W ith the first attribute highlighted, press ENTER and choose the right attribute value descr ibing the feature near you an d press ENTER.
After highlighting a line feat ure from the Feature List screen (for example a road) and press ing ENTER, MobileMapper s tarts logging GPS positions from t he position where you are. Th e firs t time you log a lin e area, and then every t ime you think this is necessary: - P res s ME NU, hi ghl igh t Logging I nterval and press ENTER.
4. Loggin g and Describin g an Area Feature Basically , you use the same procedure as when you log a line feature, esp ecially regarding the n eed for defining a logging interval (see 3.
By the time y ou are done with the description, MobileMapper will probably have logged th e GPS position o f the corner . - N ow , pr ess MENU , high lig ht Pau se <feature name> and press ENTER.
6. Nes ting a Featu re When you are lo gging GPS positions to a feature, you may fin d another feature that you also w ant to log. Rather than log the entire feature and come back to record this other feature, you can simp l y pause the fea- ture bein g logged, log the other feature, close it and resume logging the first feature.
7. Of fset tin g a Poi nt F eat ure Sometimes the feature you wan t to put on t he map is in area of poor GPS reception or is not accessible. This is when you can map th e feature using the offset utility .
8. Offs etting a Line or A r ea Featur e For the same reasons as a point feature (see previous page), you may need to use the offset utility to map a line or area feature.
9. Log ging GI S Da ta on a P reset Grid N etw ork MobileMapper's grid mapping uti l ity is an easy way to automatically set up a series o f GPS waypoints to facili- tate the logging of data in an orthogonal grid.
- Record an observation or measur em ent : W ith the OK field highl ighted, just press ENTER. This takes you to the Loggin g screen that indicates that you have begun logging data to t he feature and that the receiver is ready to lo g the feature's attributes.
Each grid way point is a geographi c coordi nate you should make every effort to occupy so that the d at a you record is evenly spaced and complete. However , each grid waypoint is merely an aid for n avigating to the ideal location for an ob servation or measurement.
In the open job, do the following: - On the Feature List scr een, select t he grid featur e and press ENTER. On the Grid Setup screen that is now displayed, set the parameters lis ted below .
GPS Accuracy MobileMapper pr ovides better than 10-m au t onomous accu- racy around the globe assuming the receiver is t racking five GPS satellites and the PDOP < 4 (which is almost all the time). If you average p o sitions for a point feature for a few minutes, even better accuracy is poss ible.
Revisiting and Upd ating Existi ng GPS/GIS Jobs Y ou can use Mobil eMap per no t onl y to po sit ion an d de - scribe new GIS features but also to update in formation gat h- ered previously .

The start point is then marked with a small square symbol.
Work ing on Job Files Creating a New Job Before you ask field operators t o create a new job, you just need to create th e appropriate f eature library and upload it to their handhelds. Field operators will then jus t have to create a new job b ased on this f eature library .
Connecting the Handhel d to the PC - Connect the MobileMapp er handheld to one of the serial ports o n your of fice PC usin g the ser ial cable pro vided with the handheld - If you are connecting the handheld to the PC for the first time, do the following: • On the menu bar , select Optio ns and then GPS Set- tings.
Uploading a Job to the Handheld First of all , you have to connect the han dheld to th e PC run- ning MobileMapper Of fice and test the connection, as ex- plained in the prev i ous chapter . - Open the file job in MobileMapper Office using the File>Open command.
Downloading a Completed Job from the Handheld MobileMapper Office uses the MobileMapper T rans fer util- ity as an interface program to access the files s tored on the MobileMapper handheld. First of all, you have to connect the handheld to the PC run- ning MobileMapper Of fice and test the connection, as ex- plai ned on pag e 70.
After a while, t he window’ s left-hand pane shou ld list the content o f the handheld’ s memory . 1. Downloading a job file - Drag and drop this file from the left-hand pane to the righ t-han d pa ne. - Close the MobileMapper T ran sfer window .
Viewing the Content of a Job After dow nloading a completed job in Mo bileMapper Of fice as explained in the previous chapter , you can also open it in MobileMapper Office u s ing the File>Open command. As a re- sult, MobileMapper Office shows the content of this job in the main window .
Exporting Jobs in GIS Formats The most importa nt proces sing of your field data is its export to a GIS. Exp o rtin g field da ta has two p rocesses: conversi on of the data files to a standard format a GIS can read and then the actual transfer of the file.
Using the Feature Library Editor Introduc tion MobileMapper Of fice allows you to create n ew feature li- braries using t he Feature Library Editor . Feature libraries are u sed by field operato rs as a common b a- sis for describing the featu res they visit in the field.
There are four different types of features: - Point featur e : This feature can be de scribed as a point, geometrically speaking. Field operators s hould log poi n t features in st atic mode, i.e. they are supposed to stay sta- tionary at these points for at leas t one second.
Creating a New, Standalone Feat ure Library File - On the menu bar , select T ools , then Feature Libr ary Editor . This opens th e Feature Library Editor window at the cen- ter of the screen .
Inserti ng New Features to t he Feature Library - In the Feature Libr ary Editor window , right- cl ick on the feature library n ame and select Insert Feature . A new dia- log bo x opens in w hich y ou can defin e the first feature for the library: - Enter a name fo r this feature in the Feature T ype Nam e field (see recommendation s opposite).
Defining Feat ure Attribut es - Under the feature library n ame, in the left-hand part of the Feature Library Ed it or wind ow , select the first feature name, righ t-click on it and sel ect Insert Attribute .
Defining Attri bute Values Y o u define attribute values i n the right-hand pane of the Fea- ture library Editor w indow . - Click on the name of the first attribute of the first feature. The right -hand pane o f the Feature Li brary Edito r win- dow now shows a t able containing t he definit ion of this attribute.
Renaming a Feature, Def ining its Representati on on the Map Still from the Feature Library E ditor window , you can change the nam e of a feature as explained below: - In the left-hand pane of the wind ow , click on the feature name you wa nt to edit .
The representation of a line or area f eature on the map is based on lin e properties that you can defi ne as explain ed be- low: - In the St yle/Color/ Widt h row of this table, cli ck .
- T o delete an attribute value from the lis t of possible val- ues of a Menu-sty le attribute, first select the co ncerned attribute in the left-hand pane of the Feature Library Edi- tor window .
Importing a Feat ure Library from a Job or GIS File Using the File>Import command in the Feature Library Editor window , you can impo rt the feat ure library used in an exist- ing job o r from a MIF or SH P file.
Grid Mapper Utility Introduc tion W orking with the Grid Mapper Utility is an easy way to log GPS posi tions and GIS data at w aypoin t s arranged in an evenly spaced gr i d.
However , line and area featur es diff er from grid features in two important ways: - The positions making up line and area fea tures mark the locations of real things like roads, lakes, etc. But the points making up a g rid feature are imaginar y target locations that you navigate to.
Name: Feature names like “pole,” “road” or “lake” make it easy to id entify the geomet ry of point line and area fea- tures. This is not so easy with grid features. Y ou might find it helpful to insert the word “grid” into the name of grid features.
When changing fro m t he default 50 meters, keep in mind that the selected v alue will determine the density of mea- surements. If this number is less than 5 meters or so, there is no point in using a Grid f eat ure. Simply walk around and take samples by visually estimating the require d density .
Using the W aypoint/Route Editor Introduc tion The W aypoint/Route Editor allows you to easily create a list of wayp oints that might b e useful for the field operator when she/he is perfo rming a GIS job. For ex ample one of these waypoints may help t o localize a hardly vis ible feature.
- In the right-u pper part of the window (see e xample op po- site), yo u can now make changes to the definit ion of this waypoin t (name, coordinates , icon, optional co mment).
Finding a Waypoint on the Map MobileMapper Office helps yo u locate rapidly a wayp oint. - In the waypoint table, right-click on the row contain i ng the definition of th e waypoint and s elect View .
Building a Route After you hav e created a number of waypoi nts as explained in the previous chap ter , you can now define routes graph ical- ly . Follow the instructions below to do this .
Background Map s Introduc tion Backgroun d maps are design ed to provide useful details on working areas. Field operators mi ght like to see these d etails on their hand held screens as th ey progress in th eir jobs so that they can mor e easily go to the places they h ave to visit.
A backgrou nd map gene rally consis t s of a ba se map, plus ad- ditional details that you can for example import from your GIS system. Thus, a background map is a st ack of several layers, b ut as.
Creating a New Background Map Project - On the menu bar , select T ools an d then Ba ckground Map . This opens the Background Map s window - Click on the Cr eate New ... button. This opens the Create Map window from wh i ch you can create a new back- ground map project: - T ype in a n ame for the background m ap project in the Map Na me field.
Adding Layers to a Background Map Pr oject (Cont inued from previous p aragra ph.) Y o u can add as many layers as necessary to b u ild a back- grou nd ma p. Lay ers may be SH P file s or MIF f iles . For example you co uld export to SHP ou MIF the features of a completed job an d then add them as layers to create a back- ground map.
Changing the Order of Layer s When you build the backgr ound map, the first layer you placed in the table will be brought to the front, and the last one will be sent to the back. Intermediate layers will occupy intermediate positions in the layer stack.
Changing the Visual Aspect of Layers Y ou can customize each layer by clicking on the corres p ond- ing left most cell in the table . This opens a dialog box in which you can ch oose the aspect you want for th e layer when the background map is built up later .
- Then click , or o n the menu ba r, select Op eratio ns >Cre- ate Map . MobileMapper Office then builds the back- ground map . A dialog box is displayed indicati ng that this oper at ion is in prog ress. It disappears f rom the screen when the build operation is complete.
Setting a Map Region This function allows you to define the exact limits of the background map –shown on the Map Displa y area– that you wish to up load to the handh eld. Using t his f unction al so al- lows you to limit the file size of the uploaded portion of the background map for better displ ay performan ce in the field.
- On the menu bar , select F ile>Up load t o GPS>Ba ckgroun d Map. If no Map region has b een defined previousl y in the Map Display area, a message will pop u p warning you that the whol e background map is going to be upl oaded. If you click Ye s , the procedure will continue.
Coordinate System Introduct i on to Coor dinate Systems and Dat ums The MobileMapper sy stem uses standard coor dinate systems and datums used by sur veyors and cartographers around the world. MobileMapper of fers the capability to define your own coordinate system s and datums.
The most co mmon coordinate sys tems are Univers al T rans- verse Mercator (UTM) and latitude/longitude, but there are many var iations that are tied t o specific regi ons of the Eart h. MobileMapper allows you to use an y of the more co mmon grid coor dinat e sys tems or cr eate your o wn.
Which sys t em/datum y ou use can have a very profound re- sult. For example, the dif ference between NAD27 and NAD83 is mi nimal in Bloomington, Indi ana, about 42 meters in Alba ny , New Y ork, about 70 meters in Las V egas, Nevada and as much as 100 met ers in parts o f Californi a.
However , MobileMap per uses only the WGS84 datum to project data onto the map screen, i.e. to position features spa- tially on a map. One way to visualize this is if you were to select NAD2 7 or .
Coordinate Systems in MobileMapper Off ice In MobileMapper Of fice, the definition of a coo rdinate sys- tem can be split into two different sets of parameters: hori- zontal system and h ei ght syst em. The horizontal system may be one of tw o typ es: - Geodetic type: the system relies on the definition of a datum.
Selecting a Pre-defined Coordi nate System - On the menu bar , select Options and t hen Coordinate S ys- tem . A new d ialog box opens show ing the name of the currently used coo rdinate system (see below).
3. Defining the height system - In the lo wer part of the Coor dinate S ystem dial og bo x, check the des i red option ( Ellipsoid elevati ons or Ortho- metric elevatio ns ).
- Click on the button located o n the right of the Geo- detic D atum combo bo x. This opens a new di alog box in which yo u should enter the name of the new datum and specify the ellipsoid us ed as well as the possible shifts and rotati ons. - T hen c lic k OK to cl ose thi s di alog box.
This opens a new dialog box i n which yo u should define a n ame, a datum, a projection and othe r parameters for this zone (see example below). - Then click OK to close this dialog box. -C l i c k OK again to close the Grid System Defini tion dia- log bo x.
Print Function MobileMapper Office’ s Print function allows you to print the conten t of th e Map Display ar ea. What will be prin ted will therefore depend on wh ich layers you w ill check in the Layers Li st. As most W indows applicati ons, the Print Preview and Print Setup functions are available fro m the File menu.
3. Appe ndice s Specificat ions Receiver - 12 parallel-channel technology , tracks up to 12 satellites to compute positions and update information with quadrifilar anten na Acquisition times (und .
Inst alling a Memory Car d T o remove and insert an S D card: - Turn the MobileMapper of f - Remove the battery door and then the AA batteries - T o remove the card, push the car d slightly towards the top of th e MobileMapper .
Connection to Mounting Cradle Direct Connection to MobileMapper Connecting MobileMapper to an Ex ternal Device The Data cable can be con nected to MobileMapper in two differen t ways: - MobileMapper mounted t o the Mounting Cr adle: Place the receiver in the cradle, bottom end first.
