Getting Started This manual explains the use of comm ands for remotely controlling your oscilloscope. W ith this information, you can write computer programs to perform func tions, such as setting the front-panel controls, taking m easurements, performing statistical calculations, and exporting data for use in other programs.
Getting Started W ith USB, the system automatically con fi gures itself. T o verify that the USB is enabled: 1. On the front panel, push Utility . 2. Push Utility Page . 3. Select I/O with the Multipurpose knob . 4. Push USB , and verify that USB is enabled.
Getting Started The oscillosco pe has a USB 2.0 High speed device p ort to control the oscilloscope through USBTMC or GPIB with a TEK-USB-488 Adapter . The USBTMC protocol allows USB devices to communicate using IEEE488 style messages. This lets you run your GPIB software applications on USB hardware.

Command Syntax Y ou can control the operations and f unctions of the oscilloscope through the Ethernet port or the USB 2.0 device port using comman ds and queries. The related topi cs listed below describe the syntax of these commands and queries. The topics also describe the conventio ns that the oscilloscope uses to process them.
Command Syntax T able 2-2: Comm and Message Elements Symbol Meaning <Header> This is the basic command name. If the header ends with a question mark, the command is a query . The header may begin with a colon (:) characte r . If the command is concatenated with other commands, the beginning colon is required.
Command Syntax Queries Queries cause t he oscilloscope to return status or setting information. Queries have the structure: [:]<Header> [:]<Header>[<Spa ce><Argument > [<Comma><Argu ment>]...] Y ou can specify a q uery command at any level within the c ommand tree unless otherwise noted.
Command Syntax Abbreviating Y ou c an abbrevi ate many oscilloscope comman ds. Each command in this documentation shows the minimum accepta ble abbreviations in capitals. For example, you can ent er the command ACQuire:NUM A vg simply as ACQ:NUMA or acq:numa.
Command Syntax If the header is off: FULL;1 5. Set commands and queries may be concatenate d in the same message. For example, ACQuire:MODe SAM ple;NUMAVg?;S TATE? is a valid message that sets the acquis ition mode to sample. The message then queries the number of acquisitions for averaging and the acqui sition state.
Command Syntax Cursor Position Mnemonics When cursors ar e displayed, commands may specify which cursor of the pair to use. Command Syntax Argument T ypes Commands use a rgumen ts such as enumera tion, numeric, quoted string and block. Each of these arguments a re listed in detail below .
Command Syntax A quoted string can include any character de fi ned in the 7-bit ASCII character set. Follow these rules when you use quoted strings: 1. Use the same ty pe of quote character to open and close the string. For example: "this is a v alid string" .

Command Groups This manual lists the MSO4000 and DP O4000 Series IEEE488.2 commands in two ways. First, it presents them b y functional groups. Then, it lists them alphabetica lly . The functional group list starts below . The alphabetical list provides detail on each command.
Command Groups Alias Command Group Use the Alias comma nds to de fi ne new commands as a sequence of standard commands. Y ou may fi nd this useful when repeatedly using the same commands to perform ce rtain tasks like setting up measurements.
Command Groups Bus Command Gr oup Use the Bus commands when working with serial or parallel bus measurements. Install the DPOEMBD application module when working with I 2 Co rS P I bus signals. Install the DPO4COMP module when working with RS-23 2, RS-422, RS-485, or UAR T bus signals.

Command Groups Data Formats All data points for DPO and MSO models are signed integer format only . V alid data widths for CH1-CH4, MA TH, REF1-REF4 and D0-D15 are 1 and 2-byte widths. The valid data widths for the dig ita l collection is either 4 or 8-byte widths.
Command Groups use a swapped by te order where the least signi fi cant byte is transferred fi rst. The byte order is ignored when DA T a:WIDth is set to 1. W a veform Data and Record Lengths Y ou can transfer multiple points for each waveform record.
