3 Use the inf ormation in this chapter to learn about your pr oduct ’ s components and f eatures and t o install and set up the device. M iF i O ver view The Nova tel Wir eless MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot (models 2352 / 2372) (MiF i) allows you mor e freedom than ever bef ore .
4 P ower Sourc es for MiFi Y our device will work fr om its batter y or when plugged int o a power sourc e. • Battery — The battery will last for up to four hours . Charge the battery by plugging in the AC adapter or optional car charger . While the battery is charging the P ower/C onnec tion LED will flash amber .
5 LED Stat es The P ower Butt on/Connection LED and the WiF i LED provide valuable status inf ormation about MiFi. 6 Install SIM Card and Ba tter y Before c onnecting M iF i to your c omputer for the first time you must insert the SIM card, and then inser t and charge the ba tter y . IMPORT ANT : The battery must be fully charged (for a minimum of four hours) bef ore using MiFi the first time .
7 Battery Tips W ARNING ! Use only batteries and chargers with your device that hav e been approved b y your ser vice pro vider or by Novatel Wireless. The failure to use appro ved batteries and chargers may increase the risk that your device will overheat, catch fir e, or explode, r esulting in serious bodily injur y , death, or proper ty damage.
8 Initial Connec tion and Setup — O v er view IMPORT ANT : Y ou will need the Access Point Name ( APN) from your service provider plus any username, passwor d, or other inf ormation they may have given y ou. If you do not have this information, contact your ser vice pr ovider before att empting to set up MiFi.
9 W iF i Mode S etup T o properly set up your device f or WiF i mode, you need t o do both of the following tasks: • Set Up a WiF i Connection • Set Up Wir eless Securit y IMPORT ANT : Y ou will need the Access Point Name ( APN) from your service provider plus any username, passwor d, or other information they may hav e given you .
10 ➌ If multiple wireless networks are found , highlight the one that has MiFi_2352 / MiFi_2372 in its name. ➍ Click Connect . The WiF i LED will flash to show connected status .
11 ➌ Select Internet > Internet Profiles . The Internet Pr ofiles – Set Internet Profiles page will open. ➍ Select the profile for your pr ovider from the P rofile list and click the Edit Internet Pr ofile button. The Internet Pr ofiles – Edit Pr ofile page will open.
12 ➎ If desired, change the P rofile Name to something more descriptiv e, for example My MiF i. ➏ Enter the APN, Username , Passw ord and other information y ou were g iven by your service provider . ➐ Click Apply . ➑ Click the Return to Profile List link.
13 Set Up W ireless Security Using security with your wireless network is very impor tant. Nov atel Wireless rec ommends that you set up security immediately by follo wing these procedures: • Change.
14 Establish a Secure Profile Y ou can use WEP (64- or 128-bit), WP A-PSK, WP A2-PSK, or WP A/WP A2 mixed mode security . IMPORT ANT : Record y our network k ey . ➊ Choose WiFi > WiFi Profiles fr om the menu bar . ➋ F rom the Pr ofile list, select S ecure and click the Edit WiFi Profile button.
15 ➌ Choose the type of securit y y ou want to use from the Security list. ➍ T ype the Net w ork Key you want to use in the bo x. ➎ Click Apply . ➏ Click the Return to Profile List link. ➐ Click Apply on the WiF i Profiles – Set P rofile page to begin using the Secur e profile.
16 USB Mode S etup T o use MiFi in USB mode , you must install the software and drivers that are c ontained in the MiFi device. IMPORT ANT : Y ou will need the Access Point Name ( APN) from your service provider plus any username, passwor d, or other information they may hav e given you .
17 W indows Setup and C onnec tion A complete user guide f or the MobiLink 3 sof tware is a vailable from the Nova tel Wireless websit e at ww w .novatelwir eless.com/support . This section contains information on installing the software , configuring your new profile , and connecting to the network.
18 ➏ Click New to start the Profile Manager wizar d. ➐ Enter a simple name f or the new profile (for example , My M iF i Connection). ➑ Enter the A ccess P oint Name (APN) that y ou received fr om your service provider and click Next .
19 C onnec t to the netw ork: ➊ Right-click the system tray icon again and select Connect . – Or – ➊ T o see network and connection status also, right-click the system tra y icon and select Open Connection Manager .
20 Mac Setup and Connection This section contains information on installing the software , configuring your new profile , and connecting to the network. M ost of the inf ormation is the same between OS X v10.4+ and OS X v10.5+. Differ ences are noted wher e they occur .
21 Configure Y our P rofile ➊ Launch MobiLink 3 from Applications > MobiLink 3 > MobiLink3 . Y ou may want to place MobiLink3 in your Dock as you will use it to Connect and Disconnect from the network. T ip! The Connection Manager will open.
22 The General tab for the New P rofile window will open. ➍ Enter a name f or your connection, the APN, and any user name or passwor d you rec eived from your netw ork ser vice provider and click OK . ➎ A dialog will open asking if you want to make this the default profile .
23 Connect to the Network ➊ Launch MobiLink. ➋ When the status reads Ready , click Connec t . When Ready changes to Connected , you ha ve successfully connected to the network and can brow se the Internet, check e -mail, or any other activities you r equire.
24 Mac Configuration T roublesho oting If you cannot connect, check these configuration items . OS X v10.4+ ➊ Launch System Pref erences and select Network . ➋ A New P or t dialog may appear . If so, select OK , then Apply No w . ➌ F rom the Show menu, select Nov atel Wireless Modem (may ha ve HSUP A, HSP A, or HSDP A in the name).
25 ➍ Click the PPP tab on the Network dialog. ➎ If the APN does not appear in the T elephone Number field, enter it and click Apply N ow . ➏ Select the M odem tab . ➏ Choose HSUP A , HSP A , or HSDP A (as appropriate) from the Modem menu and click Apply No w .
26 OS X v10.5+ ➊ Launch System Pref erences and select Network . A New Inter face dialog may appear . ➋ If so, select OK , then Apply Now . ➌ A Novat el Wireless Modem ma y be added automatically to the list of network interfaces (lef t column).

29 This chapter c overs using MiF i wirelessly (including as a temporar y hotspot), using MiFi as a USB modem, and using the F ile Shar ing capabilities allow ed by the microSDHC car d capabilities. Using MiF i in WiF i Mode WiF i mode is where you use your MiF i as a wireless hotspot or access point.
30 Setting Up a T empor ar y Hotspot MiFi allo ws you to set up a tempor ar y network name and network key so you can allow people to connect to it without having to shar e your security information. MiF i can have up to 5 devices connected at any one time .
31 The Network Name and Network Key will change to a new temporary network name (SSID) and network key . ➍ Note the temporary hotspot network name and network key .
32 Using MiF i in USB M ode In USB mode, you connect your MiF i to your comput er with the microUSB cable and use it as a USB modem. The microUSB cable will pow er M iF i (and slowly charge its battery) while it is plugged in. W indows: ➊ Use the microUSB cable t o plug M iF i into a USB 2.
33 Mac: ➊ Launch MobiLink. ➋ When the status reads Ready , click Connec t . When Ready changes to Connected , you ha ve successfully connected to the network and can brow se the Internet, check e -mail, or any other activities you r equire.
34 Using micr oSDHC Car ds with M iF i — F ile Sharing MiFi comes with a micr oSDHC card slot that allow s you to mov e files with you without having to carr y an additional flash drive . Y ou can use microSDHC cards with up to 16GB capacity . Inser t the microSDHC Car d ➤ Inser t the microSDHC card int o the slot of the MiFi.
35 Ac cess Y our Files fr om MiFi ➊ F rom your comput er ’ s Web br owser , enter http://ww w .mifi into the address windo w and press the Enter or Return key . The MiF i Login Home page will open. ➋ Choose microSD Files fr om the menu bar . If “micr oSD FIles” is not in the menu bar , you are logged-in to MiF i.
36 Share F iles on Y our M iF i If you establish file sharing on your MiFi, others c onnected to your MiFi can ac cess the files on your microSDHC card . Y ou can determine whether they can both read and write to the car d or just read the files on the card.

38 MiFi uses a br owser in ter face that allow s you to c onfigure the device and access its man y features . Using y our W eb brow ser , you can open the MiF i Home page that giv es you acc ess to the many f eatures of the device .
39 Inter face Basics Open the Bro wser Inter fac e ➊ F rom your comput er ’ s Web br owser , enter http://ww w .mifi (or http://192.168.1.1) into the address window and pr ess the Enter or Return key .
40 The Home P age The Home page is the first page you see after logging in t o the browser int er face. It is the main point of entry for all your work with MiF i. The Menu Bar At the top of the Home page (and acr oss all the main pages) in the browser in ter face is a menu bar .
41 Home Page Sections The Home page is divided into two sections. Internet C onnec tion The Internet Connection section of the Home page gives you the f ollowing status information: • The number of .
42 W iF i C onfiguration The WiF i menu allows y ou to work with profiles , set up a temporary hotspot, set MAC filters , view the WiF i log, and view status inf ormation for the WiF i network.
43 W iFi Sta tus The WiF i Status page pro vides you with information about y our wireless network. Opening the Page ➊ Choose WiFi > WiFi Status fr om the menu bar .
44 WiF i Status Page Sections This page contains thr ee sections. W iFi Network The WiF i Network section of the W iFi Status page pr ovides the following inf ormation: • Pr ofile that is currently in use. • Name of the network (SSID) that you ar e connected to .
45 W iFi Log The WiF i Log must be enabled on the WiF i Settings page. [See WiF i S ettings P age (page 53). ] The WiF i log is primarily used for troubleshooting . Unless you are ha ving problems, y ou should leave it off . ➤ Click the WiF i Log button to open a window sho wing a log of WiF i events.
46 W iFi P rofiles The WiF i Pr ofiles page allows you t o configure your secur e profile or set up a temporary hotspot. Opening the Page ➤ Choose WiFi > W iFi Profiles from the menu bar . The WiF i Pr ofiles – Set Profile page will open.
47 • Security — The type of securit y the pr ofile is using. This applies to both the Secure and the T emporar y Hotspot pr ofiles. [See Setting Securit y (page 48). ] • Authentication — L ocked to Open Access f or all profiles. • Encr yption — Show s the type of encr yption used for the security type.
48 Setting S ecurity Y ou can use WEP (64- or 128-bit), WP A, WP A2, or WP A/WP A2 M ix ed Mode securit y . Some WiF i clients become confused if the security is changed and the net work name is not.
49 Setting Up a T emporar y Hotspot Y ou can use the device to set up a tempor ar y hotspot to allow a maximum of fiv e connections to your MiF i at one time.
50 ➎ Click Apply . ➏ Click the Return to Profiles List link. ➐ Click Apply on the WiF i Profiles – Set P rofile page. IMPORT ANT : Y our wireless connection will be disabled at this point. Y ou must reconnect with the new settings you just established.
51 Mac F ilter MA C Filt ering allows you to r estrict access to your MiF i to only those devices with a specific MA C address . The MA C address is a unique code specific t o a par ticular piece of hardw are such as a network adapter . [S ee F inding the MAC A ddress (page 51).
52 Using MA C Filter The MA C F ilter page allows y ou to enable or disable MA C filtering and to add or delete MA C addresses from the trust ed client list. IMPORT ANT : Do not enable MA C filtering unless you have added y our own MAC addr ess to the trusted client list.
53 W iFi Settings The WiF i Settings page allows you t o enable or disable broadcasting the network name and the WiF i log. Opening the Page ➊ Choose WiFi > WiFi Settings from the menu bar .
54 Internet Configur ation The Internet menu provides sta tus information for y our connection to the Internet, allows you t o configure y our MiFi to w ork with your ser vice pr ovider , and view information about your MiFi.
55 Internet Sta tus The Internet Status page pro vides information about the Internet connection. Opening the Page ➤ Choose Internet > Internet Status from the menu bar .

57 T raffic C ounters The T raffic Counters pr ovide appro ximate values and are not used f or billing purposes. This information is pr esented as a resettable c ounter .
58 Internet P rofiles The Internet Pr ofiles page allows you t o configure y our device to work with your service provider b y entering the APN, username, and other inf ormation that your pro vider requires and pr ovides to you . Opening the Page ➤ Choose Internet > Internet Profiles from the menu bar .
59 T o edit an existing profile or t o create a ne w profile: ➊ Select an existing profile from the Pr ofile list and click Edit Internet Profile . ➤ The default pr ofile cannot be edited. ➤ If the MiFi is connected, the connected pr ofile cannot be edited.
60 SIM The SIM page allows y ou to change the passwor d and to unlock your SIM. Opening the Page ➤ Choose Internet > SIM from the menu bar . The SIM page will open. SIM Page ➊ Enter the current PIN (passw ord) f or the SIM. ➋ Choose Lock SIM and click Apply .
61 Internet Diagnostics The Internet Diagnostics page pro vides status information about y our Internet connec tion and the MiFi device . Opening the Page ➤ Choose Internet > Internet Diagnostics from the menu bar . The Internet Diagnostics page will open.
62 Internet Diagnostics Page Sections This page contains two sections. 3G Modem The 3G Modem section of the I nt ernet Diagnostics page gives you the f ollowing information about the MiFi device: • .
63 Internet Settings The Internet settings page allows y ou to set the MiFi device t o auto- connect and to enable the Modem Event log . Opening the Page ➤ Choose Internet > Internet Settings from the menu bar .
64 Router C onfiguration The Router Menu gives y ou access to options that allo w you to configur e traffic through your MiF i device. The section contains the follo wing information: • Router Menu • P or t F iltering • P or t F or warding • T CP/IP • Router Settings Router Menu ➊ Choose Router from the menu bar .
65 P or t Filt ering P or t F iltering allows y ou to enhance the security of your system b y only allowing cer tain applications to reach the Internet. Opening the Page ➤ Choose Router > Port Filtering fr om the menu bar . The P or t F iltering page will open.
66 Port Filtering P age This page allows y ou to enable P or t F iltering, select common applications to allow acc ess to the Internet, and set up custom applications for ac cess to the Internet. T o set por t filtering for standar d applications: ➊ Open the page.

69 Port Forwarding P age This page allows y ou to enter the local static IP addr ess for each application that y ou want to rec eive traffic from the Internet. ➊ Select the check box f or the application you want t o enable. ➋ Enter the local static IP addr ess of the device hosting the application in the IP Address of WiFi Client field.
70 T CP/IP The T CP/IP page allows you to view the local ( WLAN) IP address and the M AC address f or the M iF i device. Opening the Page ➤ Choose Router > T CP/IP from the menu bar .

75 Restar t/Reboot Y ou can restart your MiFi fr om this page. ➤ Click Restar t/Reboot to r eset your MiFi (as if y ou turned the power off then on again). IMPORT ANT : Y our I nternet and WiF i connections will be lost and you will have to reconnect.
76 Backup/Restor e The Backup/Restore page allo ws you to make a backup cop y or restore a backup cop y of your configuration settings . Opening the Page ➤ Choose System > Backup/Restor e from the menu bar . The Backup/Restore page will open. Backup/Restore P age This page contains two sections.
77 T o sav e the configur ation file: W indows: ➊ Click Backup . A dialog will open asking whether you want to open or sav e the file. ➋ Locat e the folder where y ou want to stor e the file and click S a ve. Y ou may rename the file to make it easier to locate when y ou need it.
78 F ile Sharing The F ile Shar ing page allow s you to pro vide access to files on y our microSDHC card to others on your MiF i network . Opening the Page ➤ Choose System > File Sharing from the menu bar . The F ile Shar ing page will open. F ile Sharing Page This page has two sections.
79 The microSD F iles Link The microSD F iles link allows you to view files curr ently on the microSDHC card . In addition you can upload files to the card or delet e files from it. ➤ Click the microSD Files link on the F ile Sharing page. The directory list will open in a separate window .
80 P ower Management The MiF i device can turn itself off when it is idle. The P ower Management page allows y ou to set the timing for when MiF i device switches turns off . Y ou can set separate timings f or AC pow er and battery power . Opening the Page ➤ Choose System > P ow er Management from the menu bar .
81 P asswor d The P assword page allows y ou to change the administrative passw ord that giv es access to the brow ser inter face . Opening the Page ➤ Choose System > P assword from the menu bar . The P assword page will open. Passw ord Page This page allows y ou to creat e a new administrative passw ord.
82 Sy stem Settings The Sy stem Settings page allows you to change the in ter face language and the date and time format used in the br owser interface. Y ou can also enable the system log from this page . The system log is used for tr oubleshooting and should usually be left disabled.

84 O v er view The follo wing tips will help solve many c ommon problems encounter ed while using MiFi. • Make sure you ar e using MiFi in the correct geographic r egion. • Ensure that y our network operator ’ s wireless coverage extends to y our current location.
85 C ommon P roblems and Solutions Before y ou read on, all of the steps mentioned her e are giv en in more detailed form elsewhere in the user guide. When a ref erence is giv en, click the link to go to the more detailed inf ormation. The follo wing are some common pr oblems and solutions.

89 Using the Master Reset Button MiFi comes with a mast er reset button that allo ws you to r eturn it to its factor y default state. The master r eset button is recessed in a hole on the back of the device . Y ou will need a paperclip or similar object to push the button.
