8 What is a Video Ca ssette Recorder /DVD Reco rder? This is a DVD recorder with b uilt-in VHS video deck, and allows re cording/playback o f DVD discs and VHS tapes. DVD editing is als o possible. Recording and timer re cording Reco rd TV pr ograms on a DV D or VHS tape, either ma nually or using th e timer.
9 Quick access to r ecorded titles - Title Lis t Display the Title List to vie w all titles o n a disc and sele ct a title fo r playback o r editing. Creating your own program - Playlist Record a progra m on a DVD-RW (VR mode) or DVD-R (VR mode), th en erase, move or add scenes as you like without changing the o riginal conten ts.
10 How to Use the On- Scr een Menus The followi ng three displa ys are mainly used to operate th is recorde r. Once you become f amiliar with th e basic op erati ons, you will find the reco rder eas y to us e.
11 Sub-menu The su b-menu ap pear s when yo u selec t an item from a l ist menu (e.g., a title fr om the Title Li st menu), and pres s ENTER. Th e sub-m enu displ ays opti on s app lic abl e on ly to the se le cte d item . Th e disp layed option s differ dependi ng on the situati on and di sc type.

13 Hookups and Settings Connecting a c able box/satellit e receiver and set top box controller Connect the LINE I N jacks us ing an aud io/vide o cord. With this hookup, you can record any c hannel on the cable box or sa tellite re ceiver. Be sur e that the cable box or satellite rec eiver is turned on.
14 Notes • Synchro-Recor ding does not work wi th some tuners. For details, see the tun er’s operating instructions. • AV path through func tion does not work f or: – Input si gnals from th e LINE 2 IN jack s. – Output s ignals to S VIDEO OUT, COMPONENT VIDEO OUT, or HDMI OUT j acks.
15 Hookups and Settings Step 3 : Conn ecti ng to Your T V Connect the supp lied au dio/vi deo cord to the LIN E OU T (VID EO/A UDIO L /R) jack s of th e record er. To enjoy higher qu ality images, connect an S video co rd (n ot suppl ied) inst ead of th e yellow (video) plug.
16 If your TV has an HDMI input jack Connect the HDMI* OUT jack using a certified HDMI cord (supplied) . You will enjoy high quality pictu re and sou nd. The HD MI indic ator lig hts up on t he front pa nel whe n the rec order ou tputs sig nals through th e HDMI OUT jack.
17 Hookups and Settings If your T V has component video input j acks Connect the COMP ONENT VIDE O OUT ja cks using a compone nt vide o cord (no t supplie d) or three video cord s (not sup plied) of the same kind and length. You will enjoy accurate color repr oduction and high qua lity imag es.
18 Step 4: Con necting to Your AV Amplifi er (Receive r) Select one of th e follow ing patte rns A or B , according to th e input jack on your AV amplifie r (receiver). This will enable you to list en to DVD audio tr acks through your AV amplifier (re ceiver).

20 Step 5 : Co nnecti ng the Power Co rd Plug th e reco rder and TV powe r cord s into an AC outle t. After yo u conne ct the pow er cord , you must wait for a short wh ile before operati ng the reco rder . You can ope rate th e recorder o nly after the fro nt panel displa y lights up and the r ecord er ente rs stan dby mod e.
21 Hookups and Settings Step 6 : Prep ari ng the Remote You ca n contro l the rec order us ing the sup plied remote. Inser t two size A A (R6) ba tteries by matchi ng the 3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings inside th e battery co mpartment. Be sure to close the batte ry cover proper ly.
22 If you have a Sony DVD player or more than one Sony DVD recorde r If the supplied remo te interfere s with your other Sony DVD recor der or play er, set the comm and mode number for this recorder and the suppli ed remote to one that diff ers from th e other Sony DVD recorder or player, after you have completed “Step 7: Eas y Setup.

70 Adjusting the pi cture (tracking) You can manually adjust tra cking if the recording quality is too poor to be remedied by the VCR’s automatic tracking (a tracking meter appears during the automatic t racking). Press TRACKING +/–. The trac king met er appears .
71 VCR Playback Play back Optio ns *1 Can be pres sed up to four times to forwar d about two mi nutes. *2 For 10 s econds in SP or LP m ode/for 15 second s in EP mode. To resume norma l playback , press H P LAY. Notes • The sound is muted duri ng playback at various speeds.
72 Search ing Using Vario us Functi ons The VCR automatically marks the tape with a n index si gnal at the poin t where ea ch re cordin g begins . You can easi ly f ind a spec ific po int u sing va riou s search fun ction s. Note During DVD recording, you cannot use VCR search functions.
73 VCR Playback Displ aying the Play ing Time and Play Informa tio n You ca n check playbac k infor mation, such as elapsed or remaining t ime, recordin g mode, etc., on the TV screen . Press DISPLAY durin g playba ck. The inf ormatio n display appears .

77 VCR Recording “ c ” and “OT R” light up, and t he rema ining recording time appears in the front panel disp lay. When the time counter reach es “0:00,” the record er stops recordin g and turn s off. To canc el the Qu ick Time r Press z REC repeat edly u ntil t he count er appe ars in the front panel displa y.
78 VCR Time r Recor ding Fr om Connec ted Eq uipm ent You can set the timer for a total of 12 programs together wi th DVD and VCR timer recording , up to one mon th in adva nce. If you record fr om conne cted equ ipmen t that has a timer f unction, you can use the Sy nchro Rec func tion (p age 80).
79 VCR Recording • If the c indicator flashes in the fron t panel display, c heck that a tape with its safety tab in place is inserte d. • If timer settin gs overlap, a message appear s. To cha nge or cancel a timer record ing, se lect “Edit” from the Timer List (page 81).
80 Recor ding From Connec ted Equip ment With a Timer (Synch ro Rec) You can set the r ecor der to au tomat icall y record pro grams fr om conn ecte d equi pment t hat h as a timer functi on (such as a satellite tuner). Connect the equip ment to the LINE 1 IN jacks on the rea r of the re cord er (page 1 3).
81 VCR Recording Notes • The recorder st arts record ing only after detect ing the video signal fro m the c onnected equipment . The beginning of the program m ay not be rec orded regardless of whether or not the record er’s power i s on or off.
