FEATURES Your new receiver is a versatile audio/video control c enter. The rec eiver is designed to sound sensational and be an attractive, easy-to-use addition to your audio/video system. Although you already have a good idea of your receiver’s features, we would like to take a moment to point out certain highlights.
THE BASICS The following is intended to familiarize users with common terms and applications of Home Theater equipment. Sources - your receiver c an dire ctly provide audio from its built-in AM/FM tuner. It can also provide lim ited video from its on- screen m enu s ystem.

Since all m odern source s are stereo, the m ono inform ation is usually replicated on both the left and right channels. Stereo - Stereo contains two discrete, full range audio channels .
Bass Management - Dolby Digital and DTS form ats contain up to 5 f ull range channels plus LFE. Only a sy stem with five full-range (large) s peaker s plus a s ubwoofer c an directly reproduce these f orm ats.
FRONT PANEL Components, &K B Ltd. HEADPHONE 6 ↵ 5 3 4 1 2 1. Headphone Jack - Stereo headphones having a standard ¼ inch binaural plug can be connected to the headphone output. The receiver must be on and in HEADPHONE Mode for proper headphone operation.
REAR PANEL The rec eiver ’s bac k panel is or ganized into groups of inputs and outputs f or audio and video as s hown below. See back of this manual for an enlarged view. 1. AC fuse holder - Holds the AC Line fuse. Replace only with 12 Amp / 250 Volt Slow Blow fuse.
MAKING THE CONNECTION It’s tem pting to just plug in your new receiver and have great sound pour out. Befor e y ou do that, take a few minutes to plan out how y ou want the receiver to f it into y our audio/video system. As k yourself the f ollowing questions: What source components do I want to connect to my receiver? (CD, VCR, etc.
AUDIO / VIDEO CONNECTIONS Connecting your analog sources to your receiver A udio / Video sour ce - connecting a DVD/VLD play er to the receiver’s analog inputs. Use the same ins tructions for c onnecting to other audio / video sources s uc h as a television, satellite rec eiver, cable box , etc.
DIGITAL CONNECTIONS Connect digital inputs (DVD, VLD, etc.) to the rec eiver. You will need either coaxial or optical digital inputs to play Dolby Digital (AC- 3) or DT S sur round sound proc essing. Digital connections are also r ecom m ended f or PCM sources.
SPEAKER OUTPUTS Five-way binding posts are provided, one pair f or each channel. They are designed to acc ept a banana-type plug or spade lug connector (s how n below) and are color coded for easy identification. The red (+) post should always be connected to the speak er’s red (+) jack .
ANTENNA CONNECTIONS The FM j ack is a s tandard scr ew on F-type connector. T he AM is a push type. Strip ¼ inch of insulation off y our AM antenna wires and ins ert one wire end into each hole while holding the tabs down. Release the tabs to loc k in the AM antenna wires.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS My collection of equipment differs from the labels on the back of my receiver, how can I hook them up? Your receiver provides 5 identical sets of inputs - V1, V2, DVD, CD, and SAT. Each of these has analog audio, com posite video, S-video, c oaxial digital audio, and optical digital audio.
M y laserdisc player (or other digital source) has only optical output, but my CD recorder (or other digital recorder) has only coaxial input. Do I need some sort of converter to make direct digital recordings? No, y our rece iver will convert optical to coaxial and c oaxial to optical.
SETUP For bes t results, perf orm the f ollowing set up procedur e when you initially install your receiver and anytime you change or add sources, speakers, etc. or when you rearrange your listening area THE MENU SYSTEM Setup of y our receiver will require y ou to navigate through the menu system.
USER PREFERENCE SETUP You should alway s perform USER PREFERENCE SET UP after fir st installing your receiver and after adding/changing sourc es or video m onitors.
Set y our Zone 1 video monitor type - You should do this firs t so that you w ill get the best possible dis play while performing the rest of the setup procedure.
Set the intensity of on-scr een video overlays - Over lays will appear when y ou change a rec eiver se tting or your receiver detec ts a change in the incom ing audio or video inform ation. Trans parent m ode allows video to be seen behind the overlay.
Set the Z1 Monitor A spe ct Ratio - During normal oper ation, your receiver will overlay status infor m ation on your video monitor . Th is infor m ation is nor m ally displayed at the bottom of the monitor . However, if you are viewing letterbox m aterial on a 16:9 (widescreen) monitor , this inf orm ation will be cut off.
Edit Preset Options This m enu allows you to configure your EDIT PRESET m enu (see O PERATIO N - PRESET S) to allow changing only the preset title (as you are used to if y ou have used older B&K equipm ent) or a m or e versatile m ode that allows for directly editing comm on preset inform ation from the EDIT PRESET m enu.

Set Stereo Operation - Most users wll prefer the f actory setting - NORMAL. In this m ode, the settings you will enter in the f ollowing speaker setup apply to the STEREO sur round m ode as well as all the other m odes.
SETUP/CONFIGURE You should alway s perf orm Setup/Configure af ter f irst installing your receiver and after adding/changing speak ers or sourc es or rear ranging your listening area. If you have just c om pleted the USER PREFERENCE SETUP above y ou are already in the MAIN MENU.

Setup y our LFE channel - Usually this will be set to NORMAL. However, if y ou prefer less LFE y ou can reduce the level or com pletely turn off the LFE channel.
Speaker Calibration Speaker calibration allows you to equaliz e the volume levels of each speak er to m ak e up for dif fer ences in speak er charac teristics and distances f rom the listener to the speak ers.
Source Levels This s etup allows you to m atch the levels of your sourc es so that there are no large changes in volum e as y ou change fr om one s our ce to another. T his is f or your convenienc e only and need not be perf or m ed unless you wish to.

Memory Backup Your receiver c ontinually saves any settings you have made even if power is los t. H owever, you may wish to save a back up of y our settings in case of inadvertent changes to them . To perf orm a backup f ollow the procedure below. To restore back up settings perform the sam e procedure but selec t restore instead of backup.
OPERATION The f ollowing outlines the norma l day -to-day operation of y our rec eiver fr om the supplied universal rem ote or directly from your receiver’s f ront panel. The univer sal rem ote is also capable of c ontrolling other equipm ent and storing sequenc es of com m only used com mands .
CHOOSING A SOURCE In general, the s elected sour ce will appear at the ZONE 1 output, the T APE output, and the V1 output. T o prevent feedback, TAPE input will not appear at TAPE output and V1 input will not appear at V1 output. DVD Source Composite Video DVD PCM 2.

OVERRIDES Some laserdiscs contain the normal movie soundtrack on the PCM, AC-3 RF or DTS digital soundtrack along with supplem ental inform ation on the laser disc’s analog track . Your receiver will automatically select the digital track if one is available.

ZONE 2 OPERATION Via the Front Panel You can control zone 2 from your receiver’s f ront panel by using the LEVEL button to step to ZONE 2. T he front panel will now control zone 2. After a f ew se conds of inac tivity, control will retur n to zone 1.
ADVANCED FEATURES WA RNING - The f ollowing describes the advanced f eatures of the rec eiver. Since c hanging som e of these functions m ay cause sever e effec ts suc h as no sound or no remote control oper ation, we suggest y ou leave this m enu disabled (hidden) f or norm al operation.
ZONE CONFIGURATION Zone Configur ation will allow y ou to set m aximum volum e levels for eac h zone, change rem ote c ontrol ID c odes for eac h zone and turn off the on-sc reen display overlay s in zone 1. Make sur e you are in the ADVANCED SYSTEM SETUP menu and the remote is in AUDIO mode.

Z2 Setup Z2 Level Control - Y ou m ay wish to install an in-wall volume contro l in y our second zone. This can caus e confusion between your receiver’s internal zone 2 volume controls and your in-wall controls.
Z2 Product ID - Each m ess age transm itted fr om your rem ote includes a Product Code, identif yi ng the manuf acturer , and a product ID code f rom 1 to 16. The product ID code allows m ultiple B&K products to be controlled f rom the s ame rem ote.
POWER ON TITLES W hen you turn y our receiver on it displays tw o lines of tex t. Y ou can change this text to a personalized m essage. Make sure you are in the ADVANCED SYSTEM SETUP menu and the remote is in AUDIO mode.
