6 Introduction Introduction Congratu lations and thank you for buying a Sony Eric sson GC89. The GC89 is a combined wireless LAN (WLAN) ad ap ter an d qu ad band GSM pr odu ct , th at a ll ows you to access wireless local area network s, share local printers and f iles with others in the network, access the internet and roam the office, wire free.
Introduction 7 SIM Car d When you subscrib e to a mobile network operato r, you are issued with a SIM car d (Subscriber Identity Module card) . The SIM contains your personal subscriber data. You need to in sert a SIM into your GC89 before it will wo rk.
8 Getting Started Getting St arted Checkli st Make sure the fo llowing items are in the b ox when you u npack it: • Aluminium protect ive case for storing the GC89 •G C 8 9 •Q u i c k S t a r t G u i d e •C D - R O M The CD contains : drivers, software , docu mentation and a readme file.
Getting Star ted 9 Not e: Your network key is either 5 or 13 ASCII (text) ch aracters, or 10 or 26 hexadecim al (0-9, A-F) charac ters. Network and Subscription The network subscript ion you us e in conjun ction with y our GC89 dep ends on t he functions and features your network op erator can provi de.
10 Getting Star ted Hardware You will need: • A PC that has the minimum specification reco mmended by M icr osoft to run the version of Win do ws ® installed on it. • A 32-bit Cardbus PC Card s lot. • A Sony Ericsso n GC89. • A SIM card. Software You will need: •W i n d o w s ® 98SE, Me, 20 00 (SP4) or XP .
Installation 11 Inst allation The Wireless Manager CD-ROM co ntains the s oftware requ ired to oper ate your GC89. You will also need to make sur e that the GSM services you require are included on your SIM card subscription. For an explanation of the serv ices that are available see Network a nd Subscr iption on page 9.
12 In stal lat ion When the GC89 is not in use it is recomm ended that you store it in the protective carrier box provided. Impor tant ! Do not inse rt the card into the laptop unt il you have in stalled the software from the CD-ROM. Simply c ancel the New Hardware wizard if the card is acc identally inserted prior to so ftware installat ion.
Installation 13 In the above table, D is ref erred to as yo ur CD drive. Not e: When instal ling on Windo ws 98SE, Wind ows ® may prom pt for the origin al Windo ws 98SE CD- ROM to be inserted. 14 Crea te a EDG E/GPRS or CSD Conn ection Create a EDGE/GPRS or CSD Connection Predefined customis ed connection settings may ha ve already been ente red by your mobi le operator or IT Manager. Check th e connection drop-d own menu f or any existing entries, if they are available go to Using your Connectio n on page 16.
Create a EDGE/GP RS or CS D Connectio n 15 CSD Connection 9. Select CSD. Select your service provi der from the Choo se Ne two rk drop down list. If your service provider isn’t listed select <Other> or <North America> depending o n your l ocation.

Open your preferred connection fro m the Status screen. See Using y our Co nne ctio n on page 16 for details on opening a connectio n.

Wireless Manager Telephony Settings Screen 63 Wireless Manager T ele phony Settings Screen The Telephon y Settings screen allows yo u to vi ew and change the GSM settings of the GC89. The functions of the Teleph ony Settings screen ar e ve ry similar to the settings that you have access to via a mob ile phone’s display.
64 Wireless Manager Telephony Settings Sc reen V oice line 1 and 2: The voice number or numbers issued with your SIM card th at you use fo r normal voice calls. If you have line 2 ( alternate line service) enter in the Voice Line 2 number field. Data: The number used to make a data call to the GC89 (Mobile Terminated).
Wireless Manager Telephony Settings Screen 65 SIM lock Some SIM cards are protected with a PIN (Personal Identity Number) at the time of purchase. If the SIM card lock is activated, you have to en ter the PIN ev ery time you turn on you r PC and open Wireless Manager.
