11 Getting started G e tti ng s t ar t e d Prepar ing batt eries Use th e foll owing ba tterie s in th is cam era. Notes on using alkaline batteries • Alkaline batteries have a shorter life compared to the supplied Nickel-Metal Hydride bat teries.
12 , Connect t he battery charger to a wall outlet (wall socket) using the powe r cord ( mains l ead). The CHARGE lamp lights u p when chargi ng begins, and g oes off wh en chargin g is co mplete d. For detail s on the batter y charger (supplied), see page 119.
13 Getting started • T o use up the batter ies completely, put the camera in the slide show mode (page 64) an d leave it that w ay until the batter ies are used up.
14 , Close the bat tery cover . Press in the bat teries with the co ver, and close the cover firml y unt il it locks in pl ace. To remove the batteries Hold the ca mera wit h the batter y cover facing upward, then ope n the battery cover and rem ove the batteri es.
15 Getting started Number of images and battery life that can be recorded / viewed The tables show the appr oximate number of images and the bat tery life that ca n be recorded/ viewed when you shoot images in normal mode with fully charged batteries (supplied) at a temperature of 25° C (77°F).
16 Using t he AC adaptor , Open the DC IN jack cover and connect the AC Adap tor AC-LS5 (not supplied) to the DC IN j ack of your ca mera. Conn ect th e DC plug w ith the v mark facing the front of the c amera. • Be su re to use the AC-LS5 AC Adaptor.
17 Getting started Turn ing on/off you r camera , Pre ss POWER. The POWER lamp ( green ) ligh ts up a nd th e powe r is on. When yo u turn on you r camera for the fi rst time, the Cloc k Set screen appear s (pag e 18) . Turning off th e power Press POWER again.

22 Image size and quality You can ch oose imag e size (number of pixels) and image quality (com pression ratio) ba sed on t he kind of image s you w ant to shoot. The image size is sho wn by the number of pixels (dots) (horizont al × vertical ), which comp ose an image.

24 Basic still image shootin g — Using auto adjustment mode Holding the cam era correctly When sh ootin g pi ctures with the camera, be careful so t hat your fingers do not block the lens portion , finder window , flash emitter, microph one or self-time r lamp/AF illumi nator ( page 8).
25 Shoot ing still ima ges , Pre ss and hold the sh utter button h alfway down. The be ep sounds but the im age is not yet recor ded. When the AE /AF loc k indic ator changes from flashing to steadily li t, the camera is ready for shooti ng. (The LCD scre en may be frozen for a split second de pending on the subject.
26 Checking the last image y ou shot — Quick Review , Press b ( 7 ) on the control but ton. To return to the normal shooti ng mode, press li ghtly on th e shutter button or pr ess b ( 7 ) ag ain. To delete t he image displayed on the LCD screen 1 P ress (Del ete).

The or indicators flashes, and AF operates with priority on s ubjects located near the center .
28 Shooting close-ups — Macro The close- ups (Macro) recor ding mode is used when zoo ming up subjec ts suc h as flowers or in sects. Setting the z oom all the way to the W side lets you shoot subjec ts at dista nces as clos e as 6 cm ( 2 3/8 i nches ).
29 Shoot ing still ima ges • When shooting in clo se-ups (Macro) mode, use the LCD screen. I f you shoot using the finder , the range you can see through the finder may differ f rom the actual recording range.
30 Selecting a flash mode , Set the mode dial to , and press v ( ) on the c ontrol button repeat edly to select a flash mode. Each time you press v ( ), the indica tor changes as follows. No indic ator (A uto ): The flash automati cally st robes when shooting images in a dark place or agai nst a light source .
31 Shoot ing still ima ges To prevent subjects’ eyes from appearing red Set [R ed Eye Reducti on] to [On] in the SE T UP se ttings (pa ge 114). The indi cator appear s on t he LCD screen , and the f lash pre-stro bes before shoo ting to reduc e the red-ey e pheno menon.
32 Shooting images with the finder The find er is conveni ent when you wa nt to save battery po wer, or when i t is difficult to conf irm th e ima ge us ing the LCD sc reen . Each time you press , the display changes in t he following ord er. Histog ram on (Image informa tion can al so be displayed du ring playback.
33 Shoot ing still ima ges Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode dial to SE T UP. The SE T UP scr een appe ars. • The date and time is not inserted in Multi Burs t mode. • When images are shot with the date and time superimposed, the date and time cannot be removed later .
34 Shooting according to scene conditions You can s hoot more effect ively by select ing the appr opriat e mode and th en pressi ng the shut ter bu tto n. Twilight mode Allows you to shoot night scenes at far distance without losin g the dark at mosphere of t he sur roun dings .
35 Shoot ing still ima ges Soft snap mode This mode lets you shoot skin colors in bright er and warmer t ones for more beauti ful pi cture s. In add ition, the sof t focus effec t creat es a ge ntle atmosph ere f or portrait s of p eople, flowers, etc.
36 Combination s for each mode dial setting When shoot ing with the mode dial set to , , , , or , the c ombination o f functions suc h as the flash mode is predetermi ned to make the opt imum settings to match the scene. See the table bel ow. • a indicates that the function can be set to your preference.

40 Viewing images on a TV screen If you w ant to view images o n a TV scre en, you need a TV with a video inpu t jack and the A/V connect ing cable (sup plied).

48 Choosing an aut o focus method You ca n set the AF rang e finder fram e and the AF mode. AF range finder frame This selec ts the focus po sition acco rding to the subject position a nd size. AF mode This sets the fo cus op eration start an d stop timing .
49 Advanc ed still image shooti ng • When you use the dig ital zoom or AF illuminator, priority AF movement is giv en to subjects in or near the center of the frame. I n this case the or indicator flashes and the AF range finder frame is not displayed.
50 Shooting techniques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

53 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Exposure In addition to the focus and o ther settings, it is als o imp ortan t to adj ust th e expo sure in order to take beautiful pi ctures. Exposure i s the amoun t of light that the CCD of the digi tal still cam era is able to receiv e.
54 Adjust ing the exposure — EV ad just ment You can manuall y adjust the exposu re determin ed by t he camera . Use thi s mode when the p roper ex posure cannot b e obta ined , for e xampl e, w hen th e con trast (differe nce bet ween light an d dark) betwee n the subject a nd the backgr ound is extre mely la rge.
55 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Displaying a histogram A histogram is a graph showing the bri ghtne ss of a n ima ge. Th e hor izonta l axi s shows the bri ghtness, and the verti cal axis shows the num ber of pixels. Th e graph display i ndicate s a bright image when skewe d to the ri ght side, a dark i mage wh en skewed to the left side .
56 Shooti ng technique s When shooting images, the camera automatically sets t he exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subj ect or a sno wy scene, the ca mera may judge that the subject is bright and set a darker exposure for the image.
