11 Getting started Charging the batte ry pack , O pen the battery/“M emory Stick ” cover. Slid e the cove r in the dire ctio n of the arrow . • Be sure to turn off y our cam era when cha rg in g t he ba tt er y p a ck ( pag e 15 ). • Y our camera operates with the “InfoLITHIUM” NP-FR1 battery pack (R type) (supplied).

13 Getting started Number of images and battery life that can be recorded / viewed The tabl es show the approxima te number o f imag es and th e battery life th at can be record ed/viewed w hen you shoot images i n norma l mode with a ful ly charged ba ttery pack (sup plied) at a tem perature of 25° C (77°F).
14 Usin g the AC Adap tor , Open the D C IN jack co ver, then conn ect the A C Adapto r (supplied) to the DC IN jack of the came ra. Open the cover in the arrow direct ion as illust rated above. Connect the DC plug with the v mark facing the LCD s creen side .
15 Getting started Turn ing your came ra on/off There are follow ing two w ays to turn on the camera. Press POW ER. The POWER lam p lights in green an d the power i s on. When yo u turn on th e camer a for the fi rst time, the Cloc k Set screen appear s (p age 1 7).
16 How to use the cont rol butto n To chan ge the curr ent settings of the camer a, br ing up th e menu or th e SET UP screen (p ages 46 and 47) , and use the control but ton to make the changes. 23 Shoot ing still ima ges Basic still image shooting – Using auto mode Holding the cam era correctly When s hootin g pi ctures with t he cam era, be carefu l so that your fing ers do not blo ck the lens, f inder wind ow, flas h emitter , spea ker , or mic roph one (p age 8) .
24 , Press an d hold the shutter but ton ha lf way do wn. When the focu s is ac hieved , the camera beeps. When th e AE/ AF lock i ndicat or stops flas hing and rem ains on, the camera is ready for shooting. • If you release your finger from the shutter button, shooting w ill be ca nceled.

27 Shoot ing still ima ges Shooting close-ups – Macro For close- ups of subjects like flow ers or insects, shoot using the macr o feature. You can sh oot subjec ts approac hing up to 8 cm (3 1/4 inches) when the z oom is set to its W- end. How ever, th e availa ble foc us dist ance depe nds on t he z oom po sit ion .

32 Shooting images with the finder The find er is convenie nt when you want to save battery po wer, or when i t is difficult to conf irm th e ima ge us ing the LCD sc reen .
33 Shoot ing still ima ges Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode dial to SE T UP. The SE T UP scr een ap pears. • The date and tim e cannot be inserted i n Multi Burst mode. • When images are shot with the date and time inserted, the date and time cannot be remove d later .

35 Shoot ing still ima ges Soft snap mode You can shoo t the color of a pe rson’s skin bea utifu lly wit h a br ight, w arm c olor ton e. This mode also has a n effect on soft-focus, so an i mage s uch as that of a per son or a flow er is shot i n the prop er atmo sphe re.

37 Shoot ing still ima ges Shooting with Scene Selectio n When shoo ting wit h the Scene S electio n functi on, the co mbinat ion of fu nctio ns such as the flash mode is pre determin ed to make the opti mum settings to match the scene. See the table below for the function setting o f each shooting mode.
38 Viewin g images on the LCD screen of your camera You ca n view image s shot with the ca mera al most imme diately on t he LCD scree n. You can select t he foll owing two met hods for viewing images. Single screen You can view one im age at a time, occup ying the enti re sc reen.

41 Viewin g sti ll imag es Watching images on a TV screen If you wa nt to view ima ges on a TV , you need a TV having a video input ja ck and the A/V mult i cable (suppli ed). The colo r system o f the TV mu st match as that of your di gital still cam era.
42 Deleting i mages , Set the mode dial to , and turn on th e camera. Select the image yo u want to delete with b / B on the control but ton. • Note that the images once deleted cannot be re cove red . , Pre ss (del et e). The image has not ye t been deleted at this poin t.

49 Advance d still image shoot ing Choosing an auto focus metho d You ca n set the AF ran ge finder fram e and the AF mode. AF range fin der frame The AF range finder frame sel ects the focus position a ccordin g to the subject position and siz e.
50 • When you are shooting movies and you choose Multipoint AF , the distance to the center of the LCD screen is estimated as an ave rage, so the AF works ev en with a certain amount of vibration.
51 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng techni ques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subjec t, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

54 Exposure In addition to the focus and other settings, it is also important to adjust the exposure in order t o take beautiful pictures. Exposure is the amount of light that the CCD of the digital still came ra is able to receive. This v alue changes according t o the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
55 Advance d still image shoot ing Adjusting th e exposure – EV adju stment You ca n manu ally shif t the ex posur e value determin ed by th e camer a. Use th is mode when you do not get th e proper ex posure, for instan ce, the subjec t and its back ground have hi gh contrast (light and dark).
56 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a graph showing the brigh tne ss of a n ima ge. Th e hor izont al ax is shows the bri ghtness, and th e vertical axis shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph display indi cates a dark imag e when skewed to the left side, and a br ight ima ge when skew ed to the rig ht side.
57 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng techni ques While shooting image s, the camera automatically determines the exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subject or a snowy scene, the camer a judges that t he subject is bright and may set a darker exposure for the image.
