16 Number of images and battery life that can be recorded/ viewed The tables sho w the approximate number of images and the bat tery life that c an be recorded/ viewed when you shoot images in no rmal mode with a fully charged battery pack at a t emperature of 25°C ( 77°F).

25 Shoot ing still images Image size and quali ty You ca n choose im age size (number of pixe ls) and ima ge qu alit y (c ompr ess ion ratio) ba sed on t he kind of image s you w ant to shoot.

27 Shoot ing still images Basic still image shootin g – Using auto mode , S et the mode dial to , and turn on th e camera . The recor d ing fold er name is indi cated on the scre en fo r ab out five second s. Remove the lens cap. • Select the recor ding mediu m usin g the / CF switch (p age 21).
28 , Press t he shutter button fully down . The sh utter cl icks, the sh ooting is comple ted, an d the still image is saved in the recor ding medium. • When you are shooting with the battery pack, if no tasks are perf ormed for a whil e with the camera turned on, po wer is automatically shut off to preserve battery power (page 18).
29 Shoot ing still images About Aut o Focus When yo u try to shoo t a subject th at is hard to focu s on, t he AE/AF lo ck indicato r will change to flashin g slowly a nd the AE loc k beep do es not sound (ex cept in Continu ous AF, page 6 6). The Auto Foc us functi on may be dif ficult to use with in the f ollowing subj ects.
30 Indicators on the screen during shooting Each ti me you press (s creen stat us), the display c hanges in the fo llowing order . • The status of the s creen changes between indicators-on and indicators-off when playing back or s hooting movies. • For a detailed description of the indicators, see page 150.
31 Shoot ing still images Digital zoom Enlarge s the image using di gital proc essing. Pressing (digital zoom) ac tivates th e dig ital zo om. Ther e are tw o mo des in the digi tal zoom fun cti on. One is “Pr ecisio n digi tal zoom” and the ot her is “S mart zoom.
32 Smart zoom You can z o om in t h e imag e with much le ss image qualit y deteriorat ion. You can use the smart zoom a s though it were the optic al zoom . The zoom sca ling becomes th e number that mul tipli es the fo llowi n g smart zo om scaling by the opt ical zoom scali ng now selecte d.
33 Shoot ing still images Shooting close-ups – Macro For close- ups of subjects like flowers or insects, shoot using the ma cro fe ature. Y ou can sh oot subjec ts appro achi ng up to 2 cm ( 13 / 16 inch es) wh en the z oom is s et to i ts W- end. How ever, th e availabl e focus distan ce depe nds on t he zoo m po sit ion.

36 Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode d ial to SET UP. The SET UP scree n appears. • The date and time cannot be inserted in Multi Burst mode. • Wh en images are shot with the date and time inserted, the date and time cannot be remo ved late r .
37 Shoot ing still images Shooting according to scene conditions – Scene Selection When sho oting night sc enes, shooting people at night, shoo ting landsca pes, or shooting port raits, use the mode s listed below to increa se the qualit y of you r images.
38 , Set the mode dial to SCN, then press M ENU . 42 Watching images on a TV screen If you wa nt to view ima ges on a TV , you need a T V havi ng a video input jack and the A/V co nnect ing cabl e (supplie d).
43 Deleti ng stil l images Deleti ng images , S et the mode dial to , and turn on th e camera . Select the image you want to delete by moving the multi- sele ctor t o b / B . • T o select the recording medium, use the / CF switch (p age 21). • Note that the images once deleted cannot be rec ove red .

If you sho ot a moving subj ect at a highe r shutter sp eed, i t appe ars as i f fro zen on the image . At a lower s hutter sp eed, the subject appear s as if it flowing.
56 Shooting with aperture pr iority mode Mode dial: A You ca n adjust the amount of light tha t passes throu gh the lens. If you open the aperture (a smaller F-num ber), the am ount of li ght allo wed into the lens in creases and the in- focu s range b ecomes narro wer.
57 Advance d still image sh ooting • The shutte r speed is automatic ally adjusted from 1/2000 to 8 seconds. When you set an aperture v alue of F8, the v alues start from 1/3200 second.

64 d Select [BRK] ( Bracket Step) with b / B , then s elect the desir ed bracket step value with v / V . ±1.0EV: Shifts the ex posu re value by plus or minus 1. 0EV . ±0.7EV: Shifts the ex posu re value by plus or minus 0. 7EV . ±0.3EV: Shifts the ex posu re value by plus or minus 0.

66 Flexible Spo t AF ( ) This is use ful when f ocusing o n an extre mely smal l subject or a nar row area. Flexible Spot AF lets you shoo t in t he desired image com position. Th is is useful when you shoot using a tripod and the subje ct is out of the ce nter area.
67 Advance d still image sh ooting Continuous AF ( ) The came ra adjus ts th e focus be fore you press and hol d the shutter bu tton halfw ay down , and then conti nues to a djust the f ocu s eve n afte r AF lock is com plet ed. This allows sho oting of mo ving subjec ts with continue d focus.
68 • The focus distance informati on indicator is approximate, and should be used as a reference. • The focus distance informati on indicator does not appear when using the Ni ghtShot f unction.
69 Advance d still image sh ooting • Attaching the suppli ed lens hood blocks a flash light. • Because the shutter speed is slo wer under dark conditions when (Slow synchro) or (No flash) is selected, it is recommended that you use a tripod. • While the flash is b eing charged, the lamp flashes.
70 Sh oo ti ng t ec h n i ques Making the best of the flash gives you various options. When you set the flash mode to (Forced flash), you can shoot a back- lit subject brightly. An effect in which the flash light ref lects in the subject’ s eye is also avai lable.

72 Using the Sony Flash You ca n mount th e Sony HVL- F32X or HVL-F1 000 flas h on the adva nced accessory shoe of your cam era. The HV L- F32X is also eq uipped with automa tic flash level adj ustment and A F fill light sh ooting functions. a Mount the e xternal flash on the advanced a ccessor y s hoe.

74 • U nder fluorescent lights that flicker, e ven if you choose , the white balance may not be properly adjusted. • When the flash strobes, the manual setti ng is canceled, and the im age is recorded in [Auto] mode (except in (Flash) mode or (One push) mode).
