UX60 0MU-Q RQR RT <P=001> Installation 1. Connect the handset as shown. 2. Plug one end of t he telephone line into the TEL. LINE jack on the rear of the fax, and the other end into your telephone wall jack. 3. Plug the power cord i nto a grounded, 120 V outlet.
<P=002> Setting the date and time To set the dat e and time, press the following keys: DATE & T IME SET wi ll appear in the display. Press the START key: Enter two digits f or the Month (01 t hrough 12). Enter two digits f or the Day (01 th rough 31).

UX600MU-INBU <P=001> Introduction Welcome to th e UX-600M and thank you for choosing Sh arp! Th e UX-600M is a multifunction facsimile m achine that can also be used as convenience copier, scanner , and prin ter for yo ur computer .
<P=002> Important safety information • If your facsimile equipmen t is n ot operating properly, you should immediately remove it from your telep hone line, as it may cause harm to the telephone networ k. • The power outlet must be installed near the equipment and must be easily accessible.

UX600MU-ISUN RT <P=001> Chapte r 1 Installation Unpacking Checklist After unp acking your fa x, make sure you have all the item s shown b elow. If any are missing , contact y our dealer or retailer .
UX600MU-ISIF YF <P=001> Loading the Imaging Film The printer unit in your fax creates pr inted text and images by applyin g heat to the imaging film, which causes ink to be transferred from the film to the page. Follow the steps below to install or rep lace the imagin g film.
<P=002> 3 Take the new film ou t o f its package, and insert two of the gears provided with the fax into the ends of the spool with film. Make sure that the two tabs on the gears fit properly into th e slo ts in the ends of th e spoo l. • Do not yet remove the band which holds the spoo ls together.
<P=003> 6 Pull the empty spool toward the back of the compartment, unwinding the film as you pull. 7 Insert the empty sp oo l into the back of the compartmen t so that the g ear and th e flange fit into the slots on th e sides of the compartment.
<P=004> 9 Close the print com partment cover, mak - ing sure it clicks into place. • Caution! Close the cover slowly to make su re it d oesn’t pinc h your fing ers. 10 If you r eplaced the film, initialize the new film by pr essi ng the FUNCTION key, the " 6 " key, and the " # " key on th e operatio n pane l.
UX600MU-ISCO DD <P=001> Connections Connect the power cord, telephone line cor d, and handset as shown below. If de- sired, y ou can also co nnect an answerin g machine or an extension telephone to your f ax.
<P=002> TEL. SET TEL. LINE 3 Connect the h andset as sho wn and place it on the handset rest. 4 Insert one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL. L INE jack. In- sert the other end into a standard (RJ11C) single-line telephone wall jack. Be sure to insert the telephone line cord into the TE L.
<P=003> Connecting the fax to your com puter The Multifunction Interface kit which comes with your fax machine allows you to use your fa x as a printer and sc anner, a nd lets y ou pe rform fa x oper ations from yo ur comp uter via th e fax modem in y our fax m achine.
UX600MU-ISIM DB <P=001> Installing the Multifunction Interface Software The Multifunction Interface software allows you to perform fax operations from your comput er and lets you use yo ur fax as a scanner and printer. Install the soft- ware from your Sharp Mu ltifunction Interf ace CD-ROM.
<P=002> 7 From the Welcome screen, select Ne xt to continue the installation process or Ca ncel to stop installation. Enter the Registration and Fax Cover Page infor- mation as requested, clicking Ne x t until all information is complete.
<P=003> All changes will now b e in effect and you will be able to successfully run your Multifunction Interf ace software. After your Sharp Multifu nction Interface in stall is complete, y ou will return to the main installation screen.
UX600MU-ISLP DD <P=001> Attachment s Insert th e paper tr ay into th e back of the fax as shown. If desired, attach the original document su pport by inserting th e ends into th e holes in the b ottom of the fax as sh own.
<P=002> Loading Printing Paper The pap er tray h olds the paper on which r eceived documents and copies are printed. Up to 200 sheets of letter or legal size paper from 16 to 20 lbs. (60 to 75 g/m 2 ) can be loaded in the tray. Less sheets can be loaded when using heavier paper.
<P=003> 4 Replace the paper cov er on the paper tray and then push the pap er release plate back down. • Important : Be sure to replace the pa- per cover before you pus h the paper release plate down. 5 Your f ax has been s et at t he fact ory t o scale the size of the printed image to let- ter s ize pape r.
UX600U-IPSG RT <P=001> Chapte r 2 Initial Settings Setup Guide Before you can begin using your fax, there are some settings that must be made with the keys on the operation panel. Some of the settings are required for b asic use o f your fax, other s may or may not be neces sary d ependin g on h o w you want to use the fax.

UX600MU-IPRM DD <P=001> Selecting the Reception Mode Your fax has two modes fo r receiv ing incom ing calls and faxes: AUTO mode: In AUTO mode, the f ax will automatically answer all calls af ter four rings and receive the inco min g docum ent.
<P=002> Selecting the receiv ing unit If yo u have co nnected the fax machine to a per sonal comp uter with th e provided Multifunction Interf ace box, you can choose whether to have incoming faxes re- ceived to the fax machine or to your computer.
UX600MU-IPDR DD <P=001> Distinctive Ring Distinctive rin g is a service o ffered by some local telephone companies which al- lows you to use up to four differen t telephone nu mbers, each with a dif f erent ring pattern, on your regular single line.

UX600MU-IPAD RT <P=001> Storing Numbers for Automatic Dialing Automatic dialing is a quick and convenien t way of dialing which is done by either pressing a Rapid Key (Rapid Key Dialing), or pressin g the SPEED DIAL key an d enter ing a 2- digit numbe r (Speed Dialing) .

<P=003> Clearing num ber s 1 Press the keys s hown at righ t. FAX/TEL. # MODE will appear in the display. 2 Press " 2 " to select CLEAR. 3 Enter the Speed Dial number that yo u want to clear by pressing the number keys. (Exampl e) 4 Press the START key.

UX600MU-IPVA DD <P=001> Volume Adjustment You can adjust the volume of the speaker, handset, and ringer using th e UP an d DOWN keys on the ope ratio n panel.

<P=002> Loading the Document Up to 20 pages can be placed in the feeder at one time. The pages will be auto- matically fed into th e fax starting from th e page on th e bottom. ♦ If you need to send or copy more than 2 0 pages, place the additio nal pages gently and carefully in the feed er just before the last page is scanned.
<P=003> Optional Transmission Settings If desired, there are several transmission settings which are possible b efore dial- ing and transmitting the document. Note: To make the settings, the documen t m ust first be loaded in the feeder. Resolution Your fax has 4 resolution settings.
<P=004> Cover Sheet You can h ave yo ur fax generate a cover sheet and s end it as the last page of the transmission. The cov er sheet includes the date and time, the sender’ s name and number, and the receiver’s n ame and n umber if an automatic d ialing number is used.
<P=005> Batch Page Numbe ring This setting is used to change the page nu mbering of the transmitted document from simple numb erin g ("P. 1", "P.2", etc.) to batch numbering , which means that a slash and the total number of pages being sent are add ed after each page number (f or example, "P.
UX600MU-BOSD YF <P=001> Dialing and Transmission Once you have loaded the docum ent and made any desired transm ission set- tings, y ou are ready to dial th e number o f the receiv ing fax machine and trans- mit the docu ment. Th ere are several ways o f dialing, and yo u can select the one which best s uit s yo ur needs.
<P=002> 4 When you h ear the reception tone, press the START key. Replace th e handset if you use d it. • When transmission is completed, the fax will beep.
<P=003> Rapid Key Dialing If the number yo u want to dial has been stored for automatic dialing as a Speed Dial number from 01 to 38 (see "Storing Numbers for Automatic Dialing " in Chapter 2) , you can dial it by press i ng the corr es po nd i ng Rapid Key.
<P=004> Using the HOLD/SEARCH key If you don’t re membe r the Ra pid K ey or Sp eed D ial num ber in wh ich yo u have stored a particular f ax number, y ou can sear ch for the number by following th e steps below. Once you h ave foun d the nu mber, y ou can dial it and transmit the loaded docu ment by simply pr essing the START key.
<P=005> Automatic redialing If you use automatic dialing (including Direct Keypad Dialing) and the lin e is busy, your fax will automatically redial the nu mber. Your fax was set at the fac - tory to make 2 redialing attempts at intervals of 5 minutes.
UX600MU-BORD YF <P=001> Chapte r 4 Receiving Documents Using Auto Mode When the reception mode is set to AUTO (press the RE CEPTION MODE key until AUTO appears in the d isplay), your fax automatically answers all calls on 4 ring s and receiv es the incom ing documen ts.
<P=002> Note: If you have set Option Setting 13 (Fax Signal Receive) to NO and you hear a fax tone when you pick up the handset, you must press the START key to begin recep tion.
<P=003> 2 in 1 Print To save pap er, you can have the s i ze of your incom i ng faxes red uced by 55% . This will allow y ou to receive, f o r example, a 2-page document on one page (note that th is may not be possib le if the d ocument pages are longer than yo ur printing pap er).
UX600MU-BOCY YF <P=001> Chapte r 5 Making Copies Your fax can also be used to make copies. Single and multiple copies (up to 99 per or iginal) can be made, enabling your fax to double as an offi ce copier. ♦ The default resolution for co pying is SUPER FINE.
<P=002> 3 Press " 1 " (MU LTI CO PY) if yo u do n’t want the copies sorted, or " 2 " (SORT COPY) if yo u want them sorted. 4 Enter the de sir ed nu mbe r of co pies w ith the number k eys. • If the desi red numb er of copies is from 1 to 9, enter "0" firs t.
<P=003> Copy Cut-off When m aking a copy, your f ax has been s et at t he fact ory t o not print the r e- maining part of a document if the document is longer than the printing paper. If you want yo ur fax to alw ays print the rem aining par t of the docum ent on a sec - ond pag e, follow the ste ps below.
UX600MU-BOVC RT <P=001> or SPEAKER Chapte r 6 Making Telephone Calls Your fax can be used like a regular telephone to mak e and receive voice calls.
<P=002> Using the HOLD/SEARCH key You can us e the HOLD/SEARCH key to search for a Rapid Key or Speed Dial number. First search fo r the nu mber as describ ed in "Using the HOLD/SEARCH key" in "Dialing and Transmission" in Chapter 3, then pick up the handset o r press the SPEAKER key.
UX600MU-UAUA DD <P=001> Chapter 7 Answering Machine Hookup Using the Hookup If you have conn ected an answer ing machine to your fax as described in "Con- nections" in Chapter 1, you can receive bo th voice m essages and f ax transmis- sions on th e same line while you are o ut.
<P=002> Activating the hookup Before you go out, activate the answering machine hookup as follows: 1 Set Option Setting 9, TAD CON- NECTED, to YES: • Press the FUNCTION key and then the " 4 " key. OPTION SETTING will appear in th e display.
<P=003> How the hookup opera te s While you are out, all of your incoming calls will be answered by your answer- ing machine and its outgoing message will play. Voice callers can leave a mes- sage. During th is time, your fax machine will quietly monitor the lin e.
<P=004> 4 If you still do n ot hear a fax tone, turn off the Qu iet Detect Time function and hav e callers send faxes by pressing "5", " ", " " and then their Start key. For more information o n this method , see "If it still doesn’t wo rk" in this chapter.
<P=005> ♦ Are you h aving tro uble receiving documents sent by au tomatic dialing ? Make sure that your answerin g machine’ s outgoing messag e is less than 10 sec- onds long , and that your answering m achine is set to an swer on two ring s.
<P=006> How fax transm iss ions are detected: Your fax detects fax transmissions in two ways wh en an answer ing machine is connected, depending on whether the documen t is being sent automatica.
UX600MU-UAOS DD <P=001> Optional Hookup Settings If necessary, you can use the following settings to improve the response of th e answering machine ho okup to in coming calls.
(Ex ample) or <P=002> 3 Set the time in seco nd s by entering a two- digit nu mber from "01" to "10" (e nter "01" fo r one seco nd, "02" for two sec- onds, etc. ). To turn off the fu nctio n, en ter "00".
UX600MU-SFAJ YF <P=001> Chapte r 8 Special Functions Blocking Reception of Unwanted Faxes The Anti Junk Fax functio n allows yo u to block recep tion of faxes fro m par ties which yo u speci f y. Thi s sa ves pap e r by not pr i nti n g ou t unwan t ed "jun k" fax e s.
<P=002> 4 Enter the fax nu mber (max. of 20 digits) . (Ex ample) 5 Press the START key. 6 Return to Step 3 to enter (or clear) an- other nu mbe r, or pr ess STOP to exit.

<P=002> 4 Press the START key if you e nter ed a Speed Dial n umber or a full nu mber. • The document will be scanned and stored in memory. You r fax will then dial the receiving machine and tran s- mit the document (redialling will be done automatically if necessary).
UX600MU-SFBR (Exa mple) YF <P=001> Broadcasting This function allows y ou to send the same document to as many as 20 different locations with just one operation. First store the document in m emory, then en- ter the num bers of the receiv in g machines.
(Ex ample) <P=002> 5 Press the START key. T ran smissio n will begin. • A Transaction Report is automatically printed out after Broadcasting is com- pleted. Check the "Note" column of the report to see if an y of the locations are marked "Busy " or have a com munica- tion erro r code.
UX600MU-SFPO RT <P=001> Polling (Requesting a Fax Transmission) Polling allows you to request ano ther fax machine to send a docum e nt to yo ur fax machine. In other words, the r eceiving fax machin e, not the tr ansmitting fax machine, initiates the transmission .
<P=002> Being polled (polling standby) To let an other fax machine poll your fax, simply set the recep tion mode to AUTO, and load the do cum ent( s) to be sent. Transmission will take place when the other fax machine calls yo ur fax and acti- vates polling.
<P=003> Storing and clear ing fa x num be rs for polling permission You can store up to 10 fax numbers in your fax’s list of permitted numbers. 1 Press the keys s hown at righ t. ENTRY MODE will appear in the d is- play. 2 Press the " # " key fo ur times.
UX600MU-SFTI YF <P=001> Timer Operations The Timer function allows y ou to set a transmission and/or polling o peration to be perf ormed autom atically at a time you specify. One transmission operation and one polling operation can be set at the same time, and the tim es they will be perform ed can be spe cified up to 24 hours in adva nce.
<P=002> 7 Enter the Speed Dial number of the re- ceiving f ax machine. • If this is a pollin g operation, go to Step 10. (Ex ample) 8 Press the START key. 9 Adjust the resolution an d/or contrast (skip this step if yo u don’ t want to change settings).
UX600MU-SFEU YF <P=001> Entering and Using Programs If you frequently perform the same operatio n inv olving the same party, you can program all the steps of the operation into one Program Key. This allows you to perf or m the opera tio n by simply pressin g that key.
<P=002> 5 Press the START key. 6 Press the " # " key or the " " until th e de- sired operatio n appears in the display. The operations will appear in the follow- ing or der: .
<P=003> 12 Enter the Speed Dial number of the re- ceiving f ax machine. 13 Press the START key. 14 If desired, set the resolu tion and/or con - trast by pressing the RESOLUTION key (otherwise, skip this step). 15 Press the START key and then the STOP key.
<P=004> Broadcas ting (Continued from "Initial procedure".) 8 Enter the Speed Dial numbers of the re- ceiving m achines. 9 Press the START key. 10 If desired, set the resolu tion and/or con - trast by pressing the RESOLUTION key (otherwise, skip this step).
<P=005> Using a Progra m ke y A prog rammed operation i s per formed as follo ws: 1 Load the d ocument. 2 Press the ap propriate Program Key. Note: A maximu m of 2 timer operations can be set at.
UX600MU-OSOS RT <P=001> Chapte r 9 Optional Settings A variety of optional settings are available which you can use to customize your fax to better suit your needs. The settings are made by p ressing the pane l keys, and each setting is described in the list below.
<P=002> Setting 3: REC ALL IN TERVA L This sets the amount of time your fax will wait between automatic redials when the line is busy. Enter " 01 " for 1 min ute, " 02 " for 2 minutes, etc.
<P=003> Setting 9 : TAD CONNECTED Press " 1 " (YES) if an answering machine is connected to the fax and turned on, or " 2 " (NO) if not. See Chapter 7 f or more details on using an answering mach ine hookup . (Note: Select "NO" if you are using th e distinctive ring function .
<P=004> Setting 14 : JUNK FAX NUMBER CHECK Press " 1 " to prevent reception f rom fax num bers entered in th e Anti Junk Fax List. Press " 2 " to allow reception from all numbers. • Initial setting: " 2 " Setting 15 : POLLING Press " 1 " if you want to use Rapid Key 15/POLL as a polling key.
UX600MU-PRPR YF <P=001> Chapte r 10 Printing Reports and Lists You can print o ut a variety of lists sh owing settings and information entered in the fax. You can also have the fax automatically print out a report on transac- tions after they are made.
<P=002> Explanation of headings SENDER/ RECEIVER The fax number o f the other machine involved in the transaction. If this machine does not hav e an ID function , the communication mode will appear (for example, "G3 "). PAGES Number of pages transmitted or received.
<P=003> Reception errors E-0 Able to recognize handshake signal, but it has errors. E-1 Line disconnected during reception. E-2 Cannot recognize the handshake signal from the transmitter side. E-3 Cannot recognize the last handshake signal from the transmitter side.
<P=004> Telephone Num ber List This list shows th e fax and voice nu mbers which have been stored for automa tic dialing. Passcode List This list shows settin gs made for polling security, your name an d fax/telephone number as entered in the machine, and a sample of the header printed at the top of every page you tra n smit ( HEADER PRINT ).
<P=005> Anti Junk Number List This list shows the fax numbers from which reception is not allowed. Program and Gr oup List The top par t of this list shows the prog rams which ha ve bee n e ntered. The bo t- tom part shows the fax num bers which hav e been stored in each Gro up Key.
<P=006> Print Setup List This list shows th e current status of th e printing settings mad e by pressing the FUNCTION key and the " 6 " key. Transaction Repor t This report is printed out automatically after an operation is completed to allow you to check the result.
UX600MU-MAMA RT <P=001> Chapte r 11 Maintenance Fax print he ad Clean the print h ead frequently to ensure optimum printing performance. To clean the prin t head, f irst un plug the power cor d, open th e print comp artment cover (pr ess the release mark ed OP EN ), and remove the imaging film.
<P=002> Scanning glass and rollers Clean the scanning glass and rollers frequently to ensure the quality of transmit- ted images and copies. Open the operation panel by pulling the front edge up (grasp it at the PANEL RELEASE mark), and clean the scanning gl ass and rollers as shown be low.
