1 CA UTIONS Cautions on using Follow the cautions below wh en using this unit. Warning: • The fusing area is hot. Exercise care in this area when removing misfed paper. • Do not look directly at the light source. Doing so may damage your eyes. • Do not switch the unit rapidly on and off.
2 Cautions on handling Be careful in handling the unit as follows to maintain the performance of this unit. Do not drop the unit, subject it to shock or strike it against any object. Do not expose the drum cartridge to direct sunlight. • Doing so will damage the surface (green portion) of the drum cartridge, causing smudges on copies.

7 2 Follow the installation procedure be low to use the unit properly. SETUP PR OCEDURE When using the unit for the first time, setup the unit followi ng the proced ure shown below. * 1 If you are only using the unit fo r copying, skip this step. * 2 The multi-bypass tray is only included with th e AL-1555.
8 CHECKING P A CKED COMPONENTS AND AC C E S S O R I E S Open the carton and check if the following components an d accessories are included. If anything is not included or is da maged, contact your authorized Se rvice representative.
9 2 2 Remove all pieces of t ape shown in the illustration belo w. Then open the original cover/SPF/RSPF and re move protective materials. Afte r that, take out the bag co ntaining the power cord and TD cart ridge. 3 Release the scan head l ocking swit ch.
10 INST ALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE 1 Open the multi-bypa ss tray (AL-1555, p.17) , and then open the side cover. 2 Remove the CAUTIO N tape from the front cov er and remove the two protective pins from the fusin g unit by pulling the strings upward one at a time.
11 2 5 Gently insert the TD cartridge until it locks in place while pushing the lock release button. 6 Close the front cover and then the side cover by pressing the round projections near the side cover open but to n. When closing the covers, be sure to close the front cover securely and then close the side cover.
12 PO WER ON Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the OFF positi on. Insert the attached power cord into the power cord socket at the rear of the unit. Plug the other end of the power cord into the nearest outlet. Tur n the power switch on the left side of the unit to the "ON" position.
13 2 Initial settings of oper ation panel When the unit power is on, the operation panel will revert to the initial setti ngs when the time set with the "Auto clear time" setting (p.54) elapses after a copy or scanner job is finished, or when the clear ( ) key is pressed twice.
14 Follow the ste ps below to load pape r into the tray. PA P E R For best results, use only paper recommended by SHARP. * Do not use non-standard envelopes, and envelopes that have metal clasps, plastic snappers, string closures, windows, linings, self-adh esive, patches or synthetic materials.
15 3 LO ADING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the hand le of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Remove the pressu re plate lo ck. Rot ate th e pressur e plate lock in the direction of the arrow to remove it while pr essing down the pressure pl at e of the paper tray.
16 5 Fan the paper and in sert it into the tray. Make sure the edges go under the corner hooks. 6 Gently push the paper tray back in to the unit. Do not load pa per above the maximum height line ( ). Exceeding the line will cause a paper misfeed. • After loading paper, to cancel the bl inking without restarting copying, press the clear ( ) key.
17 3 BYP ASS FEED (inc luding special paper) The multi-bypass tray (AL-1555) or the sing le bypass (AL -1045/AL-1255/AL-1456) can be used to feed sta ndard paper, transpa rency film, labels, envelopes, and ot her special purpose pap er. Paper measuring from A6 to A4 and in the weigh t range of 52 to 128g/m 2 can be used in this tray.
18 The single bypass (AL-1045/AL-1255/AL-1456) 1 Select copy and print settings bef ore you begin the copy job. For information on the copy settings, see "MAKIN G COPIES" (p.46)". For information on the print settings, see the onli ne manual or the Help file for the printer driver, and then begin printing fro m the single bypass.
19 4 This chapter provides you with in formation on how to install req uired software to use this unit with your computer. Informa tion on how to use the online manual is also provided. The following term is used in this chapter. CD-ROM Means the supplied CD-ROM with the SHARP Personal MFP Series software.
20 BEFORE INST ALLA TION The following table show s the drive rs and software that can be installed for each version of Wind ows and interface con nection method. * 1 When the unit is connected through the pa rallel port, the Print Status Window can on ly be used when the paralle l port is set to ECP mode.
21 4 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE The following term is used in this section. MFP Means the unit as a pri nter and scanner. Installing onto Windows XP (USB/parallel interface) Before starting the installation, make sure the USB or paralle l interface cable is not connected to the MFP.
22 5 Review the so ft ware packages to be installed on th e sc ree n , an d th e n cl ic k the "Start" button. The software packages to be installed will be displayed on the screen. If inappropriate packages are displayed, click the "Back" button to select appropriate packages again.
23 4 7 Begin installation of t he Button Manager (This s tep will start if it was select ed in ste p 4) . 1 After confirming the message in the "Welcome" window, click the "Next" button. 2 Read the message in the "Please read the following information.
24 10 Connect the USB int erface cable or parallel interface cable. (p.45) Windows will detect the MFP and the Plug and Play screen wil l appear. If you are using Windows XP with the parallel interfa ce , go to step 12. 11 Begin installation of the scanner driver.
25 4 Installing onto Windows 98/Me/2000 (USB interface) Before starting the installation, make sure the USB interfa ce cable is not connected to the MFP. 1 Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer " ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.

Make sure that the interface cable is not connecte d an d c lic k the "N ex t" butt on .
27 4 8 Begin installa tion of the Sharpdesk (This step will st art if it was selected in step 4). 1 After confirming the message in the "Welcome to Sharpdesk installation" window, click the "Next" button. 2 Read the message in the "Information" window, and then click the "Next" button.
28 Installing onto Windows 95/98/Me/NT4.0/2000 (Parallel interface) Before starting the installation, make sure the USB or paralle l interface cable is not connected to the MFP. 1 Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer " ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.

31 4 INDICA T ORS ON THE OPERA TION P ANEL The ON LINE indicator and the start ( ) ind icator indicate the state of the printer or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit is ready for copying or scanning is being performed.
32 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer driver setup screen by either of the methods shown be low. 1 Click the "star t" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click " Printers and Faxes.
33 4 How to print 1 Make sure that the paper of the desired size and type is loaded in the tray. The procedure for loading paper is the sa me as for loading copier papier. See "LOADING PAPER" (p.14) 2 Open the document you int end to pr int , an d select "Print " from the application's " File" menu.
34 USING THE SCANNER MODE Using the Button Manager Setting up the Bu tt on Manager The scanner driver for this unit includes an STI (Still image) driver and WIA (Windows Ima ge Acquisition) driver. You ca n install soft ware that suppo rts the STI driver and WIA driver to enable scanning usin g only the operation panel of the unit.
35 4 Windows 98/ Me/ 2000 To scan directly into an applicati on usin g the Button Manager on Windows 98, Windows Me and Window s 20 00. Set the Event Manager properties to send only to Button Manager as shown below.
36 Scan Parameter Settings Dialog Box After you have completed the Button Manager settings in Wi ndows, configure the scan settings in Bu tton Manager. To configure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right click the icon in the Taskbar and select "Settings" from the menu that appears.
37 4 Flow of the Button Manag er setting The Button Manager can directly h andle a AL-xxxx (where xxxx is the mode l name of your unit) series device event and start your selected application according to the scan setting made on the AL-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) front panel (SC1, SC2, SC3, SC4, SC5, SC6).
38 All About The Windows Event Manager and scan ner events in Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Windows Platforms provide a mechani sm for software to handle external events for a scanner device like the SHARP AL-xxxx ( where xxxx is the model name of your unit) series products.
39 4 2 Place the origi nal you wish to scan on the or iginal table/SPF/ RSPF. For the procedure for placing the original, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.47). 3 Press the righ t copy quantity key to display the number of the application tha t you wish to use for scanning.

42 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manual provides detailed instruction s for operating the unit as the printer or scanner and a list of methods for dealing with printing or scanner probl ems. To access the online manual, your computer must have Acrobat Reader 5.
43 4 Installing Acrobat Reader 1 Turn on your computer. 2 Insert th e CD-ROM in to the CD-ROM drive. 3 Click the "star t" button, click "My Compute r" ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon. Windows95/98/Me/NT4.0/200 0, double-click "My Computer" ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.
44 USING O THER INST ALLED DRIVERS If you use another GDI pri nter or a Windows Printing System printer, interference between printers may occur and printing may not be performed properly. To use another GDI printer or a Window s Printing System printer, you must change the port setting of the printer driver using the fo llowing procedure.
45 4 CONNECTING THE INTERF A CE CABLE This unit includes both USB and parallel in terface connectors. Interface cables for connecting the unit to your computer are not included with this unit. Please purchase the appropriate cable for your computer. Connecting the USB interface cable 1 Obtain a shielde d USB in terface cable.
46 This chapter describes basic copying functions an d some other copying functions. SCAN ONCE / PRINT MANY The copier is equipped wi th a 1-page memory buffer.
47 5 About interrupt copying If you press the start ( ) key to begin a copy job whil e a print job usin g the paper tray or multi-bypass tray is in progress, th e copy job will begin au tomatically after the print data in the unit's memory is printed (inter rupt copying).
48 Using the SPF/RSPF The SPF/RSPF is de signed to hold up to 30 originals me asuring from A5 to A4 and weighting from 52 to 90 g/m 2 . 1 Make sure th at no original is left on the original t able. 2 Adjust the origi nal guides to the size of originals.
49 5 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the number of copies using the two copy quantity ( , ) ke ys when copying from the original table or copying from SPF/RSPF. • Press the right copy quantity key to set the unit di git from 0 to 9. This key will not change the tens digit.
50 Automatic exposure adjustment The automatic exposure level can b e adjusted to suit your copyi ng needs. This level is set for copying from the original table and copying f rom the SPF/RSPF respectively.
51 5 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three preset reduction ratios and two enlargeme nt ratios can be selected. The zoom function enables copy ratio selection from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. 1 Set the origina l and check the paper size. 2 Use the copy rat io selector key and/o r zoom ( , ) keys to select the desi red copy ratio.

53 6 A: When copying in a one-sided to two- sided mode: Use the original to copy key to se lect the desired one-sided to two-sided copying mode (Turn on Long Edge or Turn on Sho rt Edge ).
54 DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode (page 54) Reduces toner consumption by approximately 10%. Power save modes (pag e 55) The unit has two power save modes of operation: preheat mode and auto pow er shut-off mode.
55 6 2 Press and hold down the exposure mode selector key for approximately 5 seconds. The manual ( ) indicator will go out and the photo ( ) indicator will begin to blink. The exposure indicator marked "5" will light up, indicating the standard toner mode is active.

60 Transfer charger If copies start becoming streaky or blotchy, the transfer charger may be dirty. Clean the charger using the following procedure. 1 Turn the power switch off. (p.12) 2 Ensure that th e mul ti-bypass tray is ope n (AL-1555) and then open the side cover while pressing the side cover open button.

Be sure to use only genuine SHARP parts and supplies.
63 8 MISFEED REMO V AL When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks or blinks in the display, the u nit will stop because of a misfeed. If a misfeed occurs when u sing the SPF/RSPF, a n umber may appear in the display after a minus sign. This indicates th e number of th e originals that must be returned to the original feeder tray after a misfeed.
64 A: Misfeed in the paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the paper feed area as shown in the illustration. When blinks in the display and the misfed paper is no t seen from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tray and remove the misfed pa per.
65 8 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the illustrat ion. If the paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misfeed in the tr ansport area". 3 Raise the fusin g unit release lever a nd then close the sid e cover by pressing the round projections near th e side cover open button.
