Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 25 5.1.3 Disk Stack Assembly The disk stack assembly in the Momentus hard disk drive consists of 1 or 2 disks and disk spacers secured on the hub of the spindle m otor assembly by a disk clamp. The glass disks have a sputtered thin-film magnetic coating.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 26 5.2 Drive Electronics The Momentus ha rd dis k drive attains its intelligence and performance through the specialized electronic components mounted on the PCBA. The com ponents are mounted on one side of the PCBA. The Preamplifier IC is the only electrical component that i s not on the PCBA.

Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 28 5.2.2.1 The Host Inte rface Control Block The SATA Disk Controller provides di rect interface to an SATA bus. It i s compatible with ATA 7 Specs.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 29 Additional functionality is provided in the Buff er Control block through the following features: Increased automation to support m inimal latency read operations with minimal latency.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 30 5.2.2.6 Power Management Power management f eatures are incorporated into ea ch block of the Mom entus. This allows the designer to tailor the amount of power managem ent to the specified design. Other power m anage ment features include: Independent power management control for each b lock.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 31 5.2.3.4 Analog Anti-Aliasing Low Pass Filter The 7 th order equal-ripple analog filter provi des filtering of the analog signal from AGC before it’s being converted to digital signal with the ADC . Its main function is to avoid aliasin g for the ADC circuit.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 32 5.3 Servo System The Servo System c ontrols the position of the read/write heads and holds them on t rack during read/write operations. The Servo System also co mpensates for MR write/read offsets and th ermal offsets between heads on different surfaces and for vibrati on and shock applied to the drive.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 33 The Sequencer module identifies the data as belonging to the target sector. After a full sector is read, the 88i9322 (Rev2.0) checks to see if t he firmware needs to apply an ECC algorit hm to the data. The Buffer Control section of the 88i9322 (Rev2.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 34 advance and automatically read and store the following data from the disk into fast RAM. If the host requests this data, the RAM is accessed rather than t he disk. There is a high probab ility that subsequent data requested wil l be in the cache, because more than 50 percent of all disk requests are sequential.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 35 If the sector is not automatically relocated, the drive drops out of write caching and reports the error as an ID Not Found. If the write command is still active on the AT interface, the error is reported during that command.
Momentus P roduct Ma nual REV2.1 36 5.5.8 APM The Advanced Power Management (APM) f e ature set is an optional feature set that all ows the host to select a power management level. The power m anag ement level is specified using a scale f rom the lowest power consumption setting to the maxim um performance level .
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 37 CHAPTER 6 SATA II INTERFACE 6.1 Introd uction The Momentus disk drive is equ ipped with an industry standard SATA Interface fully supports and enhan ces PC mass storage requirements. The SATA interface conforms to the Serial ATA standards in Cabling, in Physical Signals, and in Logical Programm i ng schemes.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 38 CONTROL VARIABLE- The control variable, Z, is a flag that determ ines the code set to be u sed to interpret a data byte. The control variable has th e value D (for data characters) or K (for control characters). CRC- In Serial ATA a 32-bit CRC is calculated over th e contents of a FIS.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 39 PRIMITIVE- A primitive is a single Dword of information that consists of a control character in b yte 0 followed by three additional data characters in bytes 1-3.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 40 media is accomplished by treating the sector number as the least signifi cant portion, the head number as the mid portion, and the cylinder num ber as the most significant portion of the CHS add ress.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 41 6.3.3.2 Device Control Register (ex. 3F6h) The bits in this register are as fo llows: 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 HOB R R R R SRST nIEN 0 HOB is the High Order Byte used f or host to access the Extended Registers in the 48-bit LBA mode SRST is the host software reset bit.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 42 ABRT (Aborted Command) indicates the requested comm and has been aborted due to a drive status error (Not Ready, Write Fault, etc.) or because the command code is invalid. # Indicates the content of this bit is command dependent.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 43 DEV is res erve d. Bit0-bit3 is defined for the binary cod ed address of the head to be selected in CHS mode(e.g. if H3 through HS0 are 0011b, respecti vely, then head 3 will be selected). HS3 is the most significant bit.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 44 CHAPTER 7 SAT A II FEATURE SET This section describes the SATA II feature set suppo rted in the Seagate Momentus drive. 7.1 Device Activity Sign al Momentus implemented the Device Activity Si gnal on the SATA power connector pin-11.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 45 performance. The NCQ hardware autom atically receives the NCQ commands from the host. The h ardware verifies the duplication of the tag num ber and report tag duplicated error imm ediately.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 46 7.6 Software Settings Preservation Momentus supports SATA II Softw are Settings Preservation requirements. The settings of the fol lowing items will be preserved across device receiv ing of COMRESET. This will ensure the device operates on the intended settings even if the COMRESET is received.
Momentus P roduct M anual R EV2.1 47 CHAPTER 8 ATA COMMAND DESCRIPTIONS 8.1 Command Table Commands are issued to the driv e through SATA interface, by way of a Command Packet. Th is table list commands supported by the Momentus HDD. Extended comm ands are unique to the 48-bit Address feature set.
