Section 1A Setting Up Service In This Section Getting Started With PCS Service Setting Up V oicemail Getting Help T his section walks you through setting up ser vice for your PCS Phone, unlocking your phone, setting up your voicemail, and contacting Spr int for assistance with your PCS Ser vice.
Getting Started With PCS Service Determine if Y our Phone is Already Activated If you receiv ed your phone in the mail or purchased it at a Sprint Store, it probably has already been activated. All you need to do is unlock your phone. If your phone is not activated, please ref er to the Start Here Guide included with your phone.
Setting Up Y our V oicemail All unanswered calls to your PCS Phone are automatically transferred to voicemail, e ven if your phone is in use or turned of f . Therefore, you will want to set up your voicemail and per sonal greeting as soon as your PCS Phone is activated.

Front View of Phone Key Functions 1. Antenna: Fully extend the antenna for the best reception. 2. Ready Link Button: Press to access the PCS Ready Link List (see “Using PCS Ready Link” on pa g e 27). 3. Side V olume Key: Lets you adjust the receiver volume dur ing a call or ringer volume in standby mode.
8. Earpiece: Lets you hear the caller’ s voice. 9. Main LCD (display): Displays the phone’s main menu, features, modes, etc. 10. Viewing the Display Screen This list identifies the symbols you’ ll see on your display screen. shows your cur rent signal strength. The more lines you have, the stronger your signal. means your phone cannot find a signal. tells you a call is in progr ess.

T urning Y our Phone ON and OFF T urning Y our Phone On Press to turn your phone on. Note: When you turn on your phone for the first time, you will be asked to activate PCS Ready Link service. Press or OK (left softkey) to use PCS Ready Link service.
Using Y our Phone’ s Battery Battery Capacity Y our PCS Phone is equipped with a Lithium Ion (LiIon) batter y . It allows you to recharge your batter y before it is fully drained. The batter y provides approximately 3.25 hour s of continuous digital talk time (1.
Charging the Battery Y our PCS Phone comes with a recharg eable batter y . Y ou should charg e the batter y as soon as possible so you can begin using your phone.
Displaying Y our Phone Number Just in case you forget your phone number , your PCS Phone can remind you. T o display your phone number: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select My Phone# and press . Note: T o access the phone’ s main menu, press from standby mode.
Important: T o maximize performance when using your PCS Phone, extend the antenna before a call and do not touch the antenna during a call (see page 180). With the Flip Closed: 1. Make sure your phone is on. 2. Press and hold the Side Call key ( ) on the r ight side of the phone.
With the Flip Closed: 1. Make sure your phone is on. (If your phone is of f , incoming calls go to voicemail.) 2. When your phone rings or vibrates, press and hold the Side Call key ( ) on the r ight side of the phone. (The Call will be answ ered in speakerphone mode.
Answering a Roam Call With Call Guard Enabled T o answer a call when you are roaming and Call Guard is enabled: 1. Press or . 2. The following messa g e will appear . “Roaming rate applies. Please Press [1] to accept. ” Pr ess to answ er the call.
Changing Ringer V olume T o change the r inger volume, adjust the Side V olume key when the phone is in standby mode. Note: T o change the ringer volume from the main menu, see “Adjusting the Phone’ s Volume Settings” on page 47.
Missed Call Notification for V oice Calls When an incoming voice call is not answ ered, the Missed Call notification is displayed on your screen. T o call the last Missed V oice Call: Simply press or . T o display the Missed V oice Call Log: Press View (left softke y).
Dialing Options Dialing options are display ed when you press after enter ing numbers in the phone’s standby mode. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
In-Call Options During a call, your phone displays menu options when you press . T o select an option, highlight it and press . Flash to answ er an incoming Call W aiting call or to connect a third party dur ing Three-W ay Calling. Mute or Unmute Select Mute to mute your phone’s microphone.
End-of-Call Options T o display the following options, press within 10 seconds after disconnecting a call. T o select an option, highlight it and press . Call Again to dial the phone number . Call:Speaker On to dial the phone number in speakerphone mode.
Finding a Phone Number Y ou can search Contacts entr ies for phone number s that contain a specific string of numbers. T o find a phone number: 1. Enter four or more digits and press . The more numbers you enter , the more specific the search becomes.
Abbreviated Dialing When you enter four dig its of a phone number , the screen displays “ Abbrev . Dial. ” Y our phone dials the phone number in your Contacts list that ends with the four digits you entered. T o make a call using Abbreviated Dialing: 1.
Using Speed Dialing With this feature, you can dial your fav orite entr ies using one key press for locations 2-9 (see page 62 for setting Speed Dialing). T o use speed dial for voice calls: From standby mode, press and hold the appropr iate ke y for approximately two seconds.
Using PCS Ready Link PCS Ready Link allows you to connect with your friends, family and co-wor kers with just one push of a button. Y ou can make 1-to-1 or 1-to-many calls instantly like a two-way radio. This feature provides a rang e of solutions to meet your communications needs.
Ready Link Call Alerts There are se ver al ways your PCS Phone alerts you during PCS Ready Link calls. When you make or receiv e a PCS Ready Link call: The phone beeps. The backlight illuminates. The screen displays a PCS Ready Link call message.
Incoming Calls shows the last 10 different PCS Ready Link calls you accepted. Missed Calls shows the last 10 PCS Ready Link calls you missed. T ip: Y ou can also select Enter R-Link# from “Go to” menu options to enter a PCS Ready Link number directly.
5. When you are finished, press . Note: When neither party has the floor during a PCS Ready Link call, “ Floor is open. ” appears on the display . If no one takes the floor for 20 seconds, the PCS Ready Link call ends automatically. T ip: If you press or during step 3 on the previous page, you can make a standard voice call.
Making a PCS Ready Link Call by Entering a Number 1. From standb y mode, enter the PCS Ready Link number you want to dial. 2. Press to place the PCS Ready Link call. Continue holding to take the f loor and speak. The contact’ s name appear s if there is a matched number in your PCS Ready Link List.
4. When the caller finishes speaking and releases the Ready Link button, you will see “ Floor is open. ” on the display screen. Press and hold to take the f loor and repl y to the caller . (Y ou will see “ Y ou have floor . ” and hear a tone confir ming that you may speak.
Redialing a PCS Ready Link Call Y ou can redial the last PCS Ready Link call that you dialed or received (whichever was more recent). T o redial a PCS Ready Link call: 1. From the PCS Ready Link List, highlight Redial and press and hold . Y ou will see R-Link redialing.
Settings to chang e the current settings. Default View to select the default PCS Ready Link List when PCS Ready Link is launched. Y ou can select from Company List, Co. Groups, Personal List, or Per . Groups. (The default setting is Company List.
T o copy an entr y from the Company List: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select Find/Add Entry and press . 4. Press Go to (left softke y), highlight Company List and press . 5. Highlight a contact you want to copy and press Options (right softkey).
Finding an Entry in the PCS Ready Link List Y ou can find your desired entr y by enter ing a few letter s. T o find a PCS Ready Link entr y: 1. Press R-Link (left softkey) or press to access the PCS Ready Link List. 2. Press Go to (left softke y), highlight your desired list ( Company List , Co.
Adding a New Group to Y our Personal Group List Y ou can add new groups to the Personal Group List. Each group can include up to five members. Y ou can enter a group member directly , or select the member from the Company List or P ersonal List. T o add a new PCS Ready Link group entr y: 1.
Editing a Contact in Y our Personal List 1. Follow steps 1-2 in “ Adding a New Contact to Y our Personal List” on page 36. 2. Highlight the entr y you want to edit and press Options (r ight softkey). Options: Edit to edit your desired contact.
3. Highlight Edit and press . 4. Edit the group name and press or OK (left softke y). If you don’t need to edit the group name, press Next (left softkey) during step 4 a bov e and skip step 5. 5. Press Save (left softkey) to save your chang es. 6.
T o erase a group contact: 1. From the PCS Ready Link List, press Go to (left softkey), highlight Per . Groups and press . 2. Highlight your desired group and press to display the group contacts. 3. Highlight the contact you want to erase and press Options (r ight softkey).
Setting Speed Dialing for PCS Ready Link Entries 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Contacts and press . 3. Select Speed Dial #s and press . 4. Highlight an unassigned number and press . When you highlight an assigned number and press , you’ ll be asked whether you want to overwrite the assigned number .

Reminder: T o access the phone’ s main menu, press from standby mode. Menu items may be selected by highlighting them with the Navigation key and pressing . Sound Settings Ringer T ypes Ringer types help you identify incoming calls and messa g es. Y ou can assign ringer types to individual Contacts entries, types of calls, and types of messages.
Selecting Ringer T ypes for Voicemail T o select a r inger type for voicemail: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Ringer T ype and press . 5. Select V oicemail and press . 6. Select the menu under V oicemail and press .
Selecting Ringer T ypes for Calendar T o select a r inger types for calendar: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Ringer T ype and press . 5. Select Calendar and press . 6. Select the menu under Calendar and press .
Setting a Start-up/Power -off T one 1. Follow steps 1-4 in “Selecting a T one Length. ” 2. Select the menu under Start-up T one or Power-off T one and press . 3. Select your desired option and press . Get New to start up the browser so you can select an item to download (see page 111).
Adjusting the Phone’ s V olume Settings T o adjust the Ringer/K e y volume: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Sounds and press . 4. Select Ringer/Key Vol. and press . 5. Select the item you wish to chang e and press .
Alert Notification Y our phone comes with several dif fer ent options to keep you aware of what’ s going on by sounding the aler t or ringer . Service sets an aler t On or Off f or networ k ser vices parameter chang es. V oicemail sets an alert to notify you of voice messages.
Silence All There may be times when you need to silence your phone entirely . The phone’ s Silence All option allows you to mute all sounds without turning your phone off. T o activate Silence All: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press .
Display Settings Changing the T ext Greeting The te xt greeting can be up to 15 characters and is displayed on your phone’ s screen in standby mode. Y ou may choose to display a custom greeting or you may display your PCS User name on the phone’ s screen (the default setting).
6. Select Always On , Always Off , or your defined time length and press . Always Off alwa ys tur ns the backlight off. Always On keeps the backlight on indefinitely . Note: Always On setting returns to the previous setting the next time you turn on the phone.
Changing the Display for Incoming Calls Y ou can set the color or downloaded image (screen saver) to be shown on the Incoming Calls display . Follow these steps: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press .
Changing the Display for Standby Mode This feature enables you to select a var iety of items to display in standby mode. Follow these steps: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Standby Display and press .
Changing the Screen Saver Y our new PCS Phone offers you the option of displaying a screen saver while in standb y mode. T o assign a screen saver: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Standby Display and press .
Changing the LED Indicator Color T o change the phone’ s LED Indicator color: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select LED and press . 5. Select During Call , Incoming Calls , V oicemail , Messaging ,o r Calendar and press .
Changing the Font Size Y ou can chang e the font size settings for the message notification and the browser . T o chang e the font size: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Font Size and press .
Airplane Mode When your phone is in Airplane Mode, it cannot send or receive any calls (except for 911 dialing) or access online information. Y ou may still use the phone’ s other features, such as Games, V oice Memos, Calendar , etc., while you are in Airplane Mode.
T o turn TTY Mode On or Of f: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Others and press . 4. Select TTY and press . 5. Y ou will see a message on the display . Press OK (left softkey) to continue. 6. Select Enable or Disable and press .
Phone Setup Options Shortcut Y our phone offers you the option of assigning a shor tcut key to a fav or ite or often-used function. Pressing on the Navigation key in standby mode will launch your user-defined shortcut. T o assign your shortcut ke y: 1.
Setting the Open/Close Flip Option This feature enables you to answ er an incoming call by opening the f lip or to end a call by closing the f lip. T o activate the Open Flip featur e: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3.
Setting Any Key Answer This feature allows you to answ er incoming calls by pressing any ke y (e xcept , , , , , , or the Navigation ke y). T o activate this feature: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Others and press .
Setting Speed Dialing With this feature you can dial Contacts Director y entr ies with one key press for locations 2-9. Sav e your memor y locations 2-9 for speed dialing your most commonly used phone number s. Speed Dial numbers must be stored in your Contacts to use this feature.
Setting Abbreviated Dialing Abbr eviated Dialing is another form of speed dialing. It allows you to dial a number from your Contacts entr ies by enter ing just the last four digits of the number . If the digits you enter do not match any stored Contacts entr y , you can automatically prepend an area code and prefix using the following steps.
Sleep Mode This feature helps conser ve your batter y power by restricting the display . T o set sleep mode: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Settings and press . 3. Select Display and press . 4. Select Sleep Mode and press . 5. Select Main LCD or Sub LCD and press .

Accessing the Security Menu Y ou must enter your lock code to view the Secur ity menu. T o access the Secur ity menu: 1. Press to access the main menu.
Unlocking Y our Phone T o unlock your phone: 1. Press Unlock (left softkey). 2. Enter your lock code. Changing the Lock Code T o change your lock code: 1. From the Security Menu display (see “ Accessing the Secur ity Menu” on pa ge 66), select Others and press .
4. Highlight your desired option, and press . Options: Allow All Calls are not restr icted; you can make or receive all calls. PhoneBook Only Only Contacts entr ies, V oicemail or special numbers (see below on this pa ge) are available to make or receive calls.
Erasing the Contacts Directory T o erase all the names and phone number s in your Contacts Director y: 1. From the Security Menu display (see “ Accessing the Secur ity Menu” on pa ge 66), select Erase Ph. Book and press . 2. If you’ re sure you want to erase your Contacts, highlight Ye s and press .
Resetting and Locking Y our Phone through SMS When your phone is lost or stolen, you can erase your impor tant personal information (such as Contacts entries, call histor y , and messages) and lock your phone by sending a special formatted SMS message to your phone.
Security Features for PCS Vision SM Signing In and Out of PCS Vision Services Y ou can sign out of PCS Vision ser vices without turning of f your phone; however you will not have access to all PCS Vision ser vices, including W eb and messaging. Signing out will avoid any charges associated with PCS Vision ser vices.

Understanding Roaming Recognizing Icons on the Display Screen Y our phone’ s display screen always lets you know when you’ re off the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network and whether your phone is operating in analog or dig ital mode. The following chart indicates what you’ ll see depending on where you’ re using your phone.
Roaming on Analog Networks When you roam on analog networ ks, you will experience a similar quality provided by other analog carr iers today . Although some featur es, such as PCS Vision and PCS V oice Command, will be unavailable, you can still make and receive calls and access voicemail.
Setting Y our Phone’ s Roam Mode Y our PCS Phone allows you to control your ability to roam. By using the Roaming menu option, you can determine which signals your phone accepts. Set Mode Choose from three different settings on your dual-band/tri-mode phone to control your roaming experience.
Controlling Roaming Charges Using Call Guard In addition to the roaming icon, Call Guard alerts you when roaming charg es apply . This feature makes it easy to mana ge your roaming charg es by reminding you when you make or receive roaming calls. It also requires you to take an additional step before placing or answering a roaming call.
Section 2E Navigating Through Menus In This Section Menu Navigation Menu Structure Viewing the Menus T his section is a road map to using your PCS Phone. Every function and feature can be accessed through an onscreen menu. T ake a few moments to learn your way around and you’ ll find your phone easier to use.
Menu Navigation The Navigation key on your PCS Phone allows you to scroll through menus quickl y and easily . The scroll bar at the r ight of the menu keeps track of your position in the menu at all times. T o navigate through a menu, simply press / on the Navigation key .

Viewing History Y ou’ ll find the Call Histor y feature ver y helpful. It is a list of the last 20 phone number s (or Contacts entr ies) for each call you placed, accepted, or missed.
Making a Call From Call History T o place a call from Call Histor y: 1. Press to access the main menu. 2. Select Call History and press . 3. Select Outgoing Calls , Incoming Calls or Missed Calls . 4. Press . 5. Highlight the entr y you want to call by scrolling through the list.
Prepending a Phone Number From Call History If you need to make a call from Call Histor y and you happen to be outside your local area code, you can add the appropriate prefix by following these steps: 1. Highlight a call histor y entr y and press Options (right softke y).

Contacts List Entry Options T o access a Contacts entr y’ s options, display the Contacts list, highlight an entr y and press , then select a phone number and press Options (right softkey). (See “Finding Contacts List Entr ies” on page 92.) T o select an option, highlight it and press .
Entering T ext Selecting a Character Input Mode Y our PCS Phone provides convenient ways to enter wor ds, letter s, punctuation, and number s whenever you are prompted to enter text (for e xample, when adding a Contacts entr y). T o change the character input mode: 1.
Adding a W ord to the T9 Database If a word you want to enter does not display as an option when you are using T9 T ext Input, you can add it to the database. T o add a word to the T9 T ext Input data base: 1. Select the Alphabet input mode. (See “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on page 87.
Entering Characters by T apping the Keypad T o enter characters by tapping the ke ypad, select the Alphabet mode (see “Selecting a Character Input Mode” on pa ge 87). Press the corresponding ke y until the desired character appears. By default, the first letter of a word is capitalized and following letters are lower case.
Entering Numbers, Symbols, Canned Suffixes, and Smileys Entering NUMBERS T o enter number s: 1. In a text entry field, press r ight softkey . 2. Highlight NUMBER and press . 3. Press the corresponding numeric ke y to enter the number . Shortcut: Press and hold the corresponding numeric key to enter the number directly in alphabet mode or T9 mode.
Entering SMILEYS T o enter smile pictures (“emoticons”): 1. In a text entry field, press the r ight softkey . 2. Highlight SMILEYS and press . 3. Highlight the line that includes your desired smile y . 4. Press the corresponding key (1-4) with each smiley .
Web to enter a new entr y’ s W eb address. Ringer to assign a ringer type to the entr y . (See “Selecting a Ringer/Imag e Type for an Entr y” on page 95.) Image to assign an image type to the entr y . (See “Selecting a Ringer/Imag e Type for an Entr y” on page 95.
T o find PCS Ready Link List entries: 1. From standb y mode, press on the Navigation key to display your Contacts list. 2. Press Go to (left softke y). Highlight your desired list and press . Phone Book to display the Phone Book. Company List to display the Company List.
