Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phon e by first configuring your hard ware, activa ting your ser vice, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their correspo nding internal compartm ents.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot if the SIM is not detected. Installing the M emor y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone. Char ging a Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li-io n batter y . The T ravel Adapter that is used to charge the batt ery , is inclu ded with your phone.
8 2. Plug the f lat end of th e T ravel Adapter into the P ower/ Accessor y Interface connector and t he other end into a standard AC wall out let. 3. When charging is finished, remove the flat end from the interface connector j ack on the phone.
Getting Started 9 Setting Up Y our V oice Mail 1. In Idle mode, press , then touch and hold . Y ou may be prompted to en ter a password. Note: Y ou can also access your voicemail from the on-screen keypad by touching then pressing or touch Call . 2. Follow the tutorial to crea te a pass word, record a greeting, and record your name.

16 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vig ation for your phone. The a697 has done away with the n eed for navigation whee ls or keypads. The a697 is complete ly navigable by either an on-screen touch or scroll. • T ouching an on-scr een option ac tivates th e feature.
Menu Navigation 17 Navigating T hro ugh Menus As you navigate through a menu, options display on the s creen as scrollab le lists. Menu t abs (located at the b ottom of most screens, provide access to addit ional screen opt ions). T o navigate a scrollable list: 1.

Menu Navigation 23 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop (Idle Scre en) to use the applica tion or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. There are thr ee different widg et desktops you can use. Y ou can have different widget s on all thre e desktops.
24 Note: Y ou can dra g a widget to a location of your choice on the desktop or , just touch the widget on the widget bar and it will display in the center of the desktop. R ear r angin g Widge ts Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets.

Call Functions 29 Note: Y ou can ans wer a call while using the Address Book or other menu feature. After ending the call, the phone returns to the previously active function screen.

36 Call W aiting The Call W aiting feature allows you to answer an incoming call while you have a ca ll in progress, if this ser vice is supported by the network, and you have set the ➔ Settings ➔ Cal l s ➔ V oice Call ➔ Call W aiting Menu to Activated .
Entering T ext 37 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWER TY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entr y system to reduce the nu mber of ke y strokes needed to enter text .
38 Changing the T ext Input Mod e - K eypad There are three main k eypad layout keys t hat will change t he on- screen keys within the QWER TY keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
Entering T ext 39 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and touch . The small circ le above T9 will turn green and will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Begin typing a word. A list of word options displays an d inc ludes a number indicating th e words a vaila ble to chose from.
40 Using Emoticon (Emo) Mode 1. Rotate your phone counterc lockwise to a Landscape orientatio n. Note: The Emo option is available only when mode has been selected. 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the botto m of the screen and touch . 3. T ouch either or to cyc le through a dditional keys.
Entering T ext 41 Using Numeric in P or tr ait Mode The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouc h the T ex t Inpu t Mode button a t the bot tom of the screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys correspon ding to the digits you want to enter .
42 3. Use your finger tip to wri te out eac h ch aracter . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key ( ) to create a space betw een letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
Entering T ext 43 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Char acters 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activates th e Initial uppercase function.

Changing Y our Settings 49 Bac klight Time The backlight turns the screen on using a preset br ightness level. When the time (set in this feat ure) runs out, the touch screen turns off. The phone can also be set to lock when the Backli ght Time runs out.

Changing Y our Settings 51 Vibration F eedba ck Y ou can set the level of vibration intensity that occurs when you touch the screen. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Vibration F eedback . 2. Drag the V ibration Intensi ty slider to t he intensity le vel you desire (range is 0-4).
52 Au t o Ke y p a d L o ck The Auto Keypad Lock fe atur e locks your phone when the Backlight t urns off. T o modify this featu re, follow these st eps: 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone . 2. T ouch On or Off from the Auto Keypad Lock field.
Changing Y our Settings 53 Check PIN code When the Che ck PIN cod e feature is e nabled, you must enter your PIN each time yo u switch on the phone. Consequently , an y person who does not have yo ur PIN cannot use your phone without your a pproval. 䊳 T ouc h On or Off from the Check PIN Code field.
54 Note: The PIN2 code is provided by A T&T . Entering an incorrect PIN2 code can cause the phone to lock, at which point, you will have to call A T&T customer service for assistance. Change Phone Pass word The Change password f eature all ows you to change your current phone password to a new one.

56 3. Press to return to the pr evious Phone settings p age. Smar t Unlock Smart Unlock allows you to un lock your phone by drawing a preselected symbol with your finge r . In additi on to unlocking your phone, you can immedi ately display your contacts, create a message, or launch an application.

60 2. T ouch On or Off from the Remote SI M Contro l field. 3. T ouch . Bluetooth Se r vices The Bluetooth speci ficat ion is a protocol that describes ho w the short-range wireless te chnology works, whereas se r vices describe the indivi dual devices that are s upported.

62 – Static IP : specify if you want to ma nually enter an IP address. If you want the IP address to be automatically assigne d by the server , remove the check mark. – Static D NS : specify if yo u want to m anually enter the Dom ain Name Server (DNS) address.

This application a llows you to tap into local businesses, locations, and events, connecting you to your search in real-time .
80 Section 8: Messaging This section describes how to send or receive dif ferent types of messag es. It also includes the feat ures and functionalit y associated with messaging.
Messaging 81 Note: If the number of recipients are less than 10, all members in the group will be added. Y ou will need to delete any unnec essary members in the list by selecting the trash can icon and deleting unwanted entries. 3. Messaging 83 3. T ouch a message you wish to view . The selected mes sage appears in the dis play . Tip : When viewing a text message, press the Up or Down volume keys to increase or decrease the font size of the message text. Six different font sizes are available.

Messaging 85 Using Instant Messaging (IM) Instant Messaging allows you to send and receive instant messages using AIM, Me ssenger , and Y ahoo! ® communit ies. Note: Before using this feature, you need to subscribe to a messaging service. For further details, contact your service provider .
86 Deleting M essages within a F older 1. T ouch ➔ Messaging . 2. Select a messa ge folder ( Inbox , Sent , Outbox , or Drafts ). A list of messages in the fold er appears in the display . 3. T ouch Delet e and touch an entry to mark it for selection with a checkmark.

90 Used Space Y ou can check the amount of the memo ry bein g used and th e memor y remaining for Multi media , T ext, Push, and Configuration Messages. The display shows th e total space inc luding the used and free space. Y ou can also view how much space is currently occupied by each message box.
Camera 91 Section 9: Camera This section explains ho w to use the camera on you r phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoot video by usin g the built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapi xel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Impo rtant !: Do not take photos of people without their permission.
92 Note: The number of JPEG pictures remaining on the selected media appears in the upper -right of the screen. This is an a pproximate number of total pictures which can be taken at the current image size. 4. If desired, before taking th e photo, you can touch on-screen icons to access various camera options.
Camera 93 Recording Mode : allows you to set th e recording mode to either: Norm al (limited o nly by availabl e space on destination locati on) or Limit for MMS (limit ed by MMS size restrictions). (Recording Mo de is only avail able in Camcorder mode).
94 Pictures/Videos F older Option s After you ha ve take n a photo or shot a video, you can access various options from the Pi ctures/Video Fo lder page. Camera/Camcorder Settings tab (upper right corner) (continued): • Shutter Sound : allows you to set the Shutter sound to 3 different shutter sounds.
