Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 11 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 2 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 Replacing the S P en nib While using the S P en, the S Pen nib ma y get dull. If the nib is dull, replace it with a new one . 1 Hold the nib with the tweezer firmly , and then pull it out. 2 Inser t a new nib into the S P en until you hear a click.
Getting star ted 15 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 16 A djusting the volume Pr ess the Volume butt on up or down to adjust the ringtone volume , or to adjust the sound volume when pla ying music or video . S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode .
17 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 18 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers or the S P en to use the touch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 19 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 20 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 21 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 22 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 23 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 24 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e.
Basics 25 • The pen nib of the S P en is replaceable . If the pen nib gets dull, replace it with a new one. • If the S Pen is not w or king properly , take it to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e. Refer to the Samsung website f or more information about the S P en.
Basics 26 Launching A c tion Memo With the S P en button pr essed, double -tap the screen t o launch Action Memo. Jot down or dra w a note, and then select the memo by tapping to per form various actions, such as adding contacts or sending an email.
Basics 27 Using air c ommand Pr ess the S Pen butt on while hovering the S P en over the scr een. In most case, air command appear on the scr een when pressing the S P en button. Use the f ollowing actions: • Action Memo : Launch Action Memo. • Scrapbooker : Selec t and capture an image , and then save the image into Scrapbook .
Basics 28 Air view Use this f eature t o per form various functions while the S Pen is ho vering ov er the screen. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → S P en → Air view , and then drag the Air view switch to the right. P oint at an item with the S P en to preview cont ent or view information in a pop-up window .
Basics 29 Samsung Smar t S cr oll Use this f eature t o scroll the screen up or do wn by tilting your head or the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen → Smar t scroll , and then drag the Smar t scroll switch to the right.
Basics 30 Using the Multi W indow panel T o show the Multi Window panel , tap and hold . The Multi Window panel appears on the left side of the screen. Selec t one application, and then drag another application t o a new location. Y ou can launch the same application on the two window s at the same time.
Basics 31 Sharing files Drag an item y ou want to shar e to the other window to share the it em from one window t o another . Crea ting a paired window Use this f eature t o save the c ombination of current running Multi Window applications . On the Multi Window panel , tap → Create , enter a title , and then tap OK .
Basics 32 • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode. • Multi window : Set to use Multi Window . • Screen Mirroring : Activate or deactivate the scr een mir roring f eature. • Air view : Activate or deactivate the air view f eature.

Basics 34 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 35 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. Locking and unlock ing the devic e Pr essing the Po wer button turns off the scr een and puts the device into lock mode .
Basics 36 Rearranging panels Moving a panel Scroll left or right on the widgets panel area, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel Scroll left or right on the widgets panel area, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the scr een.
Basics 37 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new loca tion.

Basics 41 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 104) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 42 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 43 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 44 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 45 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. 47 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter c ontact information.
Communication 48 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts T ap Con tacts . By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts. T ap → Con tacts to display , and then select a location where contacts are sav ed.

Communication 52 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list. Delete the message.
Communication 53 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap Send . T ap +C C/BCC to add more r ecipients. T ap to attach images. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach video to attach videos .
Communication 54 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .

56 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share or print the curr ent webpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 57 Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads . W eb & network 58 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key word , and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 59 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the auto- generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 60 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on remotely located devices or w eb storage ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 61 W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap W atchON on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a network and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
62 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 63 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . Smar t volume may not be activated f or some files. When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el.
Media 64 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 71) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 65 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 66 • Rich tone (HDR) : Use this to take a phot o with an improv ed contrast ratio . • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving subjects in the background . T ap t o take a series of photos. The device erases trac es of movement from a mo ving subject.
Media 67 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options vary by mode. T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause r ecording , tap . T o stop recor ding, tap .
Media 68 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 69 • Y ou can record videos in dual camera mode f or up to 5 minutes in F ull HD and up to 10 minutes in HD . • While taking videos in this mode, sound is recor ded by the internal microphone . Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct.
Media 70 • Metering : Selec t a metering method. This determines how light v alues are calculat ed. Cen tre -w eighted measures backgr ound light in the centre of the scene . Spot measures the light value at a specific location. Matrix av erages the entire sc ene.
Media 71 • Flash : Activate or deactivate the flash. • V oice con trol : Set the camera to take photos with v oice commands . • Con textual filename : Set the camera to display c ontextual tags. A ctivate this to use T ag Buddy in Galler y and Story Album .
Media 72 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature t o execut e a function with par ticular motion.
Media 73 • Print : Print the image via a USB or Wi-F i connection. S ome printers ma y not be compatible with the device . • Rename : Rename the file. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image . • Rotate left : Rotate anticlockwise.
Media 74 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap to send them to others or share them via social network services. • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or shar e it via social net work ser vices .
Media 75 St or y Album Use this application to cr eate your own dig ital album to keep your st ories by organising the images neatly and automatically . T ap Story Album on the Applications screen. T o start Story Album , you need to do wnload and install the application.
Media 76 Deleting videos T ap → Delete , select videos by tick ing, and then tap Delete . Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos by tick ing, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
