11 CHAPTER 1 T echnical over view 1 1 What kinds of TV programming can I watch with the DIRECTV ® HD Receiver? The DIRECTV ® HD Receiver provides you with the ability to receive television programs from a wide range of sources, and to display them on virtually any TV or monitor .
12 CHAPTER 1 T echnical over view 1 1 Resolution and interlacing T wo of the elements that determine the quality of a TV picture are resolution and interlacing. Resolution: For TV equipment and broadcasts, resolution is defined by the number of horizontal lines displayed to make up each frame of a video image.

The Set Dish menu allows you to: Acquire the exact azimuth, elevation, and tilt angles to help you point your dish accurately based on your ZIP code.
39 CHAPTER 3 Setting up and connecting 3 3 7 Use the 0 - 9 buttons on your remote control to enter your five-digit ZIP code. When you have entered all five digits, the screen updates to display the correct azimuth, elevation, and (for oval dish types only) tilt.

44 CHAPTER 3 Setting up and connecting 3 3 T esting the Signal Strength The DIRECTV HD Receiver shall have a matrix that shows the signal strength of all transponders per orbital position in one table. This matrix is in addition to showing the signal strength of each active transponder individually in the system setup menu.
40 CHAPTER 3 Setting up and connecting 3 3 5 Highlight the DIRECTV Satellite Signal Meter menu item, then press the SELECT button. The DIRECTV Satellite Signal Meter screen appears. The signal meter starts checking the satellite signal strength immediately .

51 CHAPTER 4 Watching TV 4 4 Getting information on the TV program you are watching Y our DIRECTV ® HD Receiver provides several layers of information about the TV programs you watch. The Channel Banner As you change channels you will see a Channel Banner on each channel you tune to.
52 CHAPTER 4 Watching TV 4 4 Information icons In addition to the basic channel and program information contained in the Channel Banners (program title, channel name, rating, etc.), there are a set of information icons. These icons tell you more about the program you are watching and about the status of your DIRECTV ® HD Receiver .

If you want to know what’ s on, just use the Guide. The Guides provide scheduling information for all types of programming (satellite, off-air , or cable TV).

Viewing a category of programs in the Guide Y ou can set your Guide to show you all channels, or only channels showing programs in a specific categor y (for example, only channels showing sports, or only channels showing movies).

63 CHAPTER 4 Watching TV 4 4 Switching to another Guide style Y ou can button from the Logo Guide to the Grid Guide or Grid Guide (Name) while viewing the Guide. Here’ s how: 1 With the Guide displayed on your screen, press the RED button on your remote control.
64 CHAPTER 4 Watching TV 4 4 Searching by Credits, Title, or T ext T o find programs that star a certain actor , share a director , have a particular character , have won a specific award, or were created in a certain year , search By Credits. T o search for a program whose title you know , search by title.
65 CHAPTER 4 Watching TV 4 4 2 Highlight By Categor y , then press the SELECT button. The Search By Categor y screen appears. Categories that contain subcategories have a page icon to the right of the categor y name. 3 Highlight a categor y , then press the SELECT button.

Some manufacturers distribute more than one type of VCR. T r y them in order until you find the one that passes the test below .

75 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 There are five user profiles you can choose: Family: The Family user profile is the master profile for your DIRECTV ® HD Receiver . The ratings limits, channel restrictions, and pay per view spending restrictions you set in the Family profile apply to all of the user profiles.
76 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 Editing user profile names The four profiles named User 1 - 4 can be renamed for members of your household. The Family and All Channels profiles cannot be renamed. Y ou can change the names of User 1 - 4 profiles to anything you wish, using up to eight letters and numbers.
77 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 Editing channel lists Y ou can edit channel lists to simplify your channel sur fing by removing channels that you never watch from your channel list.
78 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 5 Edit the list using the controls as described below . Channels that are removed from the channel list do not appear in the Program Guide, and they are skipped when you change channels with the CH and CH buttons.

83 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 Setting a pay per view spending limit T o limit the dollar amount that can be spent for each pay per view program, use the Spending Limit option in the F AMIL Y profile menu. Spending Limit sets in the Family profile apply any time the system is locked, regardless of which user profile is active.
84 CHAPTER 6 User profiles 6 6 Setting the screen color and translucency For each of the profiles, you can set the screen color and translucency level used to display Menu and Guide screens. Screen colors can be set for the Family profile and the four User profiles.
