Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started wi th your phone by installing and charging the batter y , installing th e SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice mail. Before using your phone for the firs t time, you’ll need to install and charge the batt ery and install the SIM card.
6 Installing the SIM card: 1. Carefully slide the SI M card into the SIM card socket unt il the card clicks into place. Ma ke sure that the card’ s gold contacts face into the phone and that the upper-left angled corner of the card is positioned as shown.
Getting Started 7 Re moving the Memor y Card 1. Remove the phone’ s back cover . 2. Gently press t he edge of the mem ory card with your thumbnail u ntil you hea r a cli ck sound (r eleasing th e card from the slot), then pull the memo ry card out of t he slot.
8 R e mo ving the Batter y 䊳 Grip the battery at the top end (1) and lift it up and out (2). Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geab le Li-ion batte ry . A wall charger , which is used for charging the battery , is included with your phone.
Getting Started 9 Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation for connecting the charger . If the charger is incorrectly connected, damage to the accessory port will occur therefore voiding the phone’s warranty . Y our touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.
10 • Close any applications that may be running in the background (such as Music Player). T o use the Power Control shortcut bar: 1. From the Home screen, touch a nd hold an empty area until the Add to Home screen menu displays. 2. T ouch Android Widgets ➔ Power Control .

Locking and Unloc king the Phone By default, the phone locks when the backlight turns off. 䊳 Swipe the glass on the front of the screen to the right to unlock the phone. Note: Y ou can choose to configure lock settings to prevent unauthorized use of your phone.

Understanding Y our Phone 17 Phone Display Y our phone’ s display provi des information ab out the phone’ s status, and is the interface to the features of your phone. The display indicates your connection status, si gnal strength, battery status and time.
18 Indicates that the Flight Mo de is active. Y ou cannot send or receive any calls or access onli ne information. Displays when there is no SIM card in the phone. Displays when there is a sy stem error or alert. Displays when a call is in progress. Displays when a ca ll is on hold.

20 Clearing Notifications T o clear all notifications from the Not ification panel: 1. From the Home screen, touch th e Notification Bar until t he pull-down displays, then drag down vertically . 2. T ouch Clear all . The notifications are cl eared from the panel.

Y ou can repla ce the Dialer , Contacts, and Messaging shortcuts with othe r applications so you access th e shortcuts that are most frequently used.

Using the Add Accounts sync application you can add applications and dete rmine which type o f account information you want to synchr onize with your Co ntact list. 26 Contacts The default storage location for saving phone numbers to your Contacts List is your phon e’ s built-in memory . For more information, refer to “Contacts List” on page 58. Daily Briefing With Daily Briefing you can mo nitor the weather , fi nancial information, news, and your schedule from one convenient location.

28 Messaging This application allows you to use the Short Messa ge Service (SMS) to send and re ceive short text messages to and from other mobile phones. Y ou can also u se the Multi M edia Service (MMS) to create multimedia messages to send and receive from other mobile phones.
Understanding Y our Phone 29 Settings This icon navigates to the sound and phone settings for your phone. It inc ludes such settings as: di splay , security , memory , and any extra setti ngs associated with your phone. For more information, refer to “Changing Y o ur Settings” on page 128.

Understanding Y our Phone 37 Na vi gating U sing Sub-Menus Sub-menus are available when you are at any Home screen or have selected a feature or appl icati on such as Phone, Contacts, Messaging, or Web. T o access a sub-menu: 1. T ouch . A sub-menu displays at the bottom of the phone screen.
38 T ouch or T ouch and Hold Use a brief touch to select items on the display or to enter text on the virtual QWER TY keyboard. For example: touch an Application icon to open the applica tion. T ouch and hold an icon or key to open the availabl e options, or to access a pop-up menu.
Memory Card 39 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD ™ (SD) or microSDHC ™ card (also referred to a s a memory card) to expand avai lable memory space. This secure digi tal card e nables you to exc hange images, music, and data betw een SD-compatible devi ces.
40 3. Connect the USB cable to the phone and connect the cable to the computer . As soon as the connection i s established a drive lett er is assigned to the flash storage and the “ USB connected ” message displays at the top of the phone. 4. Call Functions and Contacts List 43 Prefix Dialing When activated, t his feature au tomatically prepends a string of numbers (such as an area code ) to any dialed number . This feature is useful for international dia l ing, or dialing within an area code where all the calls you m ake for a period of time use one prefix.
44 Using the V oice Dialer Voice di aler is a voice recogniti on software use d to activate a wide variety of functio ns on your phone. 1. From the Home screen, touch ➔ Voice D ialer . 2. When the Voice Dialer displays the “Listening” prompt, say one of the follo wing commands: • “Call Jo hn Doe” • “Call John Doe at home,.
Call Functions and Contacts List 45 Tip: Y ou can create pauses longer than two seconds by entering multiple 2-sec pauses. 4. T ouch . Re dialing the Last Number The phone stores the numbers of the c alls you’ve dialed, received, or missed if the call er is identified.

Call Functions and Contacts List 47 In Call Options Y our phone provides a number of features that a re available for use during a call. Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, us e the Volum e keys on the le ft side of the ph one, to adjust the earpiece volume .

50 2. T ouch the number for the partic ipant in which you want to speak privately . Y ou can now talk priva tely to that person while the other participants can continue to co nverse with each other . If there is only one other participant, that person is placed on hold.
Call Functions and Contacts List 51 Viewing Missed Calls When you are unable to ans wer a call for an y reason, you can find out who is calling you, if this service is a vailable, so t hat you can call the person back. The number of calls you missed displays on the home screen immediately afte r a call is misse d.
52 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to select the desired text input mod e when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes how to use the Swype key board to ease the text entry method.
Entering T e xt 53 Swype T ext Entr y Tips Y ou can access the SwypeTips application and watch a video or tutorial on using Swype. Y ou ca n also use the following Swype text entry tips. • Create a squiggle (like an S shape) to create a double letter (suc h as pp in apple).
54 Operation settings Operation sett ings provide ac cess to Swype op eration parameters. • Display T race : sets the lengt h of time the word t race line remai ns on-screen as you swipe across the screen. Move the sl ider between Short er or Lon ger and tou ch OK.

56 Using XT9 Predictive T ext XT9 is a predictive text system th at has next-letter prediction and regional error correct ion, which compensates for users pressing the wrong keys on 3x4 keyboards. 1. Holding the phone in Portrait orienta tion, touch at the bottom of the screen.

T ouch one of the words to replace the typed word and continue until you complete the messa ge. Using the Android Keyboard The Android keyboard displays in two formats: Portrait and Landscape.
58 Section 6: Contacts Contacts List This section explains how to use and manage your Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memory. Creati ng a Con tact The default storage location fo r saving phone num bers to your Contacts List is your phone’ s built-in memory .
Contacts 59 Finding a Contact Y ou can store phone numbers a nd their corres ponding names onto either your SIM card or phone’ s built-in memory . They are physically separate but are use d as a single ent ity , called Contacts.
60 Linking Contact Inf or mation Most people now maintain multipl e email accounts, social networking logins, and other si milar account info rmation. For example, a F acebook account logi n name might d iffer from a corporate email account login because they a re maintain ed separately and for differ ent groups of people.
Contacts 61 Unlin king a C ontact 1. From the Home screen, touch . 2. T ouch a contact name (the account name from which you want to unlink an entry). Note : typically thi s is the same contact with a different nam e or account informat ion. 3. T ouch <number> linked contacts from the Linked Contacts area.
62 Copying Con t act Information to the S IM Card The default storage location fo r saving phone num bers to your Contacts list is your phone’ s built-in memo ry . This procedure allows you to copy numbers save d to the phone’ s memor y , onto the SIM card.

Messages 71 Message Threads Sent and received text and picture messages are grouped into message threads. Threaded messa ges allow you to see a ll the messages exchanged (sim ilar to a chat program) and displays a contact on th e screen.
72 Messaging Settings T o configure the settings for text messages, multimedia messages, Voice mails, and Push messages. 1. From the Home screen, touch Messaging .

78 Note: The number of JPEG pictures remaining on the selected media appears in the upper-right of the screen. This is an approximate number of total pictures that can be taken at the current image size. Camera and Camcorder Options Y ou can change options using your keypad in capture mode.

84 4. T ouch Save to assign the wall pa per image. T ouch Discard to stop without updati ng the wallpaper image. Using the Camcorder In addition to taking photos, the camera also doubles as a camcorder that also allows you to record, view, and send videos.
Multimedia 85 • Share : lets you share the selected videos with Picasa, Audio P ostcard, AllShare, Messaging, Google Mail, Bluetooth, or Y ouT ube. • Create folder : create a new sub-folder in the current folder . • Delete : allows you to delete se lected videos.
86 Files Files allows you to manage your sounds, images, videos, bluetooth files, Androi d files, and other memo ry card data in one convenie nt location. 䊳 From the Home screen, touch ➔ Files . The following fo lders display : DCIM DCIM is the default loca tion fo r pictures taken by the device.
Multimedia 87 Opening th e Galler y 䊳 From the Home screen, touch ➔ Gallery . Note: If you stored your files in folders (directories) on the storage card, Gallery displays these folders as separate albums. The top left album contains all the pictures in the storage card.
88 Using Me dia Hub 3. T ouch ➔ Media Hub . 4. At the Samsung Media Hub main page, touch UPD ATE . 5. Read the End-User License Ag reement (EULA) and touch Accept to continue or Dec line to exit. The Media Hub sc reen displays. 6. In order to rent or buy media, you must first create an account.
Multimedia 89 Music Player The Music Player allows you to play music files store d on the phone. Import ant!: Y ou must create and organize your playlist before you get started.
90 Creating a Playlist Before you can create a playlist you must navigate to the Music Library . From the Music Library screen, press ➔ Settings ➔ Music menu and touch t he Playlist checkbox. 1. From the Home screen, touch ➔ Music Player . 2. T ouch the Playlists tab.
Multimedia 91 5. T ouch t he Name field for the selec ted playlist, ente r a new name for the play list then touch Done , then touch Save . Playing Music Files Y ou can play an individual track of music, or you can select music from a playlist, or pl ay an entire Album.
92 4. T ouch the checkbox next to each music file you want to delete, then touch Delete . The music file (s) deletes. Assigning Music Files Y ou can choose to assign music files as a ringt one, Individual ringtone, or Alarm tone. Songs used for these types of assignments must be copied to the phone.
Multimedia 93 Y ouTub e Y ouT ube is a video sharing website on which use rs can upload and share videos, and view them in MPEG-4 format. 1. From the Home screen, touch ➔ Y ouT ube . 2. When the screen loads you can begin searching and viewing posted videos.

Applications and Development 9 5 AllShare This application wirelessly sync ronizes your Sa msung mobile phone with your TV , streams co ntent and even keeps tabs on who calls or sends text message s with real-time, on-screen monitoring. Samsung’ s AllShare make s staying connected easy .
96 Buddies Now When you add contacts using the Bud dies now screen the contacts are m arked as Favorite s and display on this screen. Any updates made to their priv ate networking applications displays here, and you can comment or call them with one touch.
