4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started with your phone by instal ling and charging the battery , installing the SIM card a nd optional memor y card, and setting up yo ur voice ma il. Before using your phone for the firs t time, you’ll need to inst all and charg e the battery and in stall the SIM card.

6 SIM Card Over view Important! Before removing or re placing the batte ry cover , make sure the phone is s witched off. T o turn the phone off, hold down the key until the power -off image displays, then tap Powe r of f .
Getting Started 7 Note: If the card is not inse rted correctly , the phone will not detect it an d no service will be available. If thi s happens, turn off th e phone, remove the card, and rei nstall the card in the correct orientation.
8 Note: The phone requires appr oximately 4 hours to achieve a f ull charge. Insta lli ng the Batter y 1. Slide the batter y into the compart ment (1) so that the tabs on the end align with the slo ts at the bottom of the pho ne, making sure the connectors al ign.
Getting Started 9 3. Plug the charger into a standard AC power outlet. The device turns on with the screen locked and indicates both its charge state and percent of ch arge. Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation f o r connecting the charger .
10 • Deactivate the GPS when not needed. Most applications using this function will periodica lly query the GPS satellites for your current location; each query drains your battery . • Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging your device.
Getting Started 11 At this point you can make an emergency call with the phone but normal cell phone service is not available. 1. Press and hold until the phone switches on. The phone searches for your network and after finding it, you can make or receive calls.

Understanding Y our Phone 21 Menu K ey The Menu key ( ) activates an available menu function for the current scre en or application. Whe n on the Home screen, the f ollowing menu options are available: • Add ( ) adds one of the following functions to a selected screen: Widgets, Shortcu ts, Folders, and Wallpapers.
22 1. Press to launch the Google Search box. – or – Press and tap ➔ . 2. T ap to launch the Voi ce S ea rc h function. Using Google Search Use the Google Search box to manua lly search for a term on both your device and on the W eb. 1. Press to launch the Google Search box.
Understanding Y our Phone 23 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using the applications on your phone. There are seven available panels , each populate d with default shortcuts or applications. Y ou can customi ze each of these panels .
24 • Shortcuts are icons that launch available device applications such as Camera, Y ouT ube, V oicemail, Contacts, Phone, Email, Market, etc. These function the same as shortcuts on your co mputer . – Although some may already be found on the E xtended Home screens, th e majority can also b e found within the Applications screens.
Understanding Y our Phone 25 Na vigating Thr ough the Screen s The following terms desc ribe the most common hardware and on-screen actions. • Press and hold : Pressing relates to use of the hardware keys and buttons to select or activate an item. For example: press the Navigation key to scroll through a menu.
26 • Drag : Press and hold your finger with some press ure before you start to move it. Do not relea se your finger until you have reached the target position. • Rotate : Automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the device sideways.
Understanding Y our Phone 27 Using Context M enus Context menus (als o called p op-up menus) contain options that apply t o a specific item on the screen. They function similarly to menu options that appear when you right click your mous e on your desktop computer .

Understanding Y our Phone 29 Email Provides access to both your Outlo ok (Exchange Server-based) work email an d Internet ema il accounts (such as Gm ail and Y ahoo! Mail). For more information, refer to “Email” on pa ge 81. Files Lets you view supported image files and text files on your microS D card.
30 Messaging Provides access to text and mult imedia messaging (SMS and MMS). For more information, refer to “Creating and Sending Messages” on page 76. Music Launches the built-in Music Player that allows you to play music files tha t you have stored on your microS D card.

32 Customizing the Screens Y ou can customize the Home screens (panels) to display the Widgets, Shortcuts, F olders, or Wallpapers. F or exampl e, one screen could contain the Music Player shortcut an d other forms of media, while another screen migh t contain communication apps such as Gmail and IM.

34 3. Ta p Applications ( ) to reveal all your current availa ble applic ations. By default, applications are displayed as an Alphabetical grid. 4. Scroll across the screens and loca te your desired application. 5. T ouch and hold the on -screen icon.
Understanding Y our Phone 35 T o place a widget onto a different screen: 1. T ouch and hold the wi dget until it becomes transparent. 2. Drag it to the edge of your screen. 3. Slowly drag it past the edge of the screen until it tur ns light blue. 4. Drag the widget to its desired position on the new screen.
36 Section 3: Memor y Card Y our device lets you use a microSD (SD) or microSDHC card (also referred to as a memor y card) to expand a vailab le memor y space. This secure digital card enable s you to exchange images, music, and data between SD-compatible devices.
Memory Card 37 Important! DO NO T remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data. Make sure your battery is fully charged before using the mic roSD card. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the battery runs out while you are using the microSD card.
38 Erasi ng Files fr om the SD car d Y ou can erase file s from the SD card using the phone. 1. Ensure the SD card is mounted. 2. Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ SD card and phone storage ➔ Unmount SD c ard ➔ OK . 3. Ta p Format SD card ➔ Format SD card ➔ Erase every thing to format the SD card.
Call Functions and Contacts List 39 Section 4: Call Functions and Contacts List This section describes f eatures and functionalit y associated with maki ng or answering call s, and the Contacts list, which is used to store contact information. Displaying Y our Phone Number Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ About phone ➔ Status .
40 Answ ering a Call When somebody calls yo u, the phone rings and displays the incoming call image. The caller's phone number , picture, or name if stored in Contacts List, displays. At the incoming call screen: • T ouch and slide to the right to ans wer the call.
Call Functions and Contacts List 41 • Add wait to insert a hard pause within the n umber string (the phone waits for your input). A wait requires that any consecutive numbers be manually sent by tapping Send . Inter national Calls 1. From the Home screen, tap , then touch and hold .
42 3. T ap the name/number and tap from the on-screen availabl e options. Speed Dialing Once you have stored pho ne numbers from your Contacts List, you can set up to 8 speed dial entries and then dial them easi ly whenever you want, simply by touching the associated numeric key .
Call Functions and Contacts List 43 Making a C all Using Spee d Dial Y ou can assign a short cut number to a phone number in the Cont acts List for speed dialing. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch and hold a speed dial location (numbers 2-9, or 1 if you are dialing voice mail) until th e numb er begins to dial.
44 Launc hing Wi-Fi Calling Note: Verify you are currently connected to a Wireless Access Point. 1. Ensure that the Wi-Fi co nnected icon displays on the status bar . The network names and security settings (Ope n network or Secured with WEP) of detec ted Wi-Fi networks display in the Wi-Fi networks section.
Call Functions and Contacts List 45 6. Use the phone Dialer , call log, or contacts list to make a call. For more inform ation, refer to “Making a Call ” on page 39. 7. Confirm you establi shed a Wi-Fi calling connection to the T -Mobile network by making sure appears at the top of the screen.
46 T ur ning the Speak erphone on and off While on a call, y ou can use your Speake rphone by following these steps: 1. Ta p ( Speaker off ) to turn the speakerphone on. 2. Ta p ( Speaker on ) to turn the speakerphone off. Tip : When the speaker is turned On , the color of t he speaker is green.
Call Functions and Contacts List 47 Setting up a Multi-Par ty Call 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. Dial the number for the first pa rticipant and tap . 3. Ta p Add call , enter the second phone number and tap . The first caller is pl aced on hold. 4.
48 3. T ap the number for the part icipant in whi ch you want to spe ak privately . Y ou can now talk privately to that person while the other participa nts can continue to converse with ea ch other . If there is o nly one other participant, that person is placed on hold.

Note: The Call log tab only records calls that occur while the phon e is turned on. If a call is received while it is turn ed off, it will not be included in you r calling history .

Call Functions and Contacts List 51 4. Edit the numb er using the on-sc reen dialpad or delete digits by pressing to erase the numbers. 5. Ta p once the number has been changed. Erasing the Call Log Y ou can delete either an individual cal l log entry o r all current entries from the Call log list.
52 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes how to select the desired text input method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes th e predictive text entr y system that reduces the amount of key strokes associated with ente ring text.
Entering T e xt 53 words. SWYPE uses error correcting algo rithms and a language mode l to predic t the next word . SWYPE also includes a touch predictive text s ystem. The onscreen keyboard opti ons are different between the Samsung keyp ad and Swype onscreen input methods.
54 Swype T ext Entr y Tips Y ou can access the SwypeTips application and watch a video or tutorial on using Swype. Y ou can also use the follo wing Swype text ent ry tips. • Create a squiggle (like an S shape) to create a double letter (such as pp in apple).
Entering T e xt 55 • T ext Input mode : There are two a vailabl e modes: 123ABC and SYM. – 123ABC mode contains alphanu meric characters and a few common p unctuation marks. T ext mode button indicates SYM . – SYM mode contains on ly symbols and numbers.
56 Note: If multiple word choices e xist for your Swype entry , an on-screen po pup appears to provide additional word choices. Entering Numbe rs and Symbols in SW YPE By using the onscreen keyb oard in port rait mode, some symbols are not avai lable (such as Emoticons or Smileys).
Entering T e xt 57 Changing the T ext Input Mo de in K eypad 1. From a screen where you can enter text, tap the text in put field to reve al the on-screen keyboard. 2. With Samsung keypad as y our text entry method, sele ct one of the following te xt mode options: • ABC to use alpha betic ch aracters f rom the on-screen keyboar d.
58 Important! T o use the Samsung keypad, the phone must be maintained in a portrait orientation. If you need to change the orientation of the screen to Landscape, we recommend using the QWERT Y keyboard beneath the screen. 2. T ap to configure the keyboard for Symbol mode.
Entering T e xt 59 Using Predictiv e T ext XT9 is a predictive text sy stem that has next-letter prediction and regional error correction, which compensates for users pressing the wrong keys on QWERTY keyboards. Note: XT9 is only availabl e when ABC mode is selected.
60 • XT9 auto-substitution allows you cr eate a wo rd rule by adding w ords for auto matic substitution during te xt entr y (fo r example yo uve becomes you’ve). – T ap the XT9 auto-substitution field. F lick up or down to review the current list of word substitutions.
Contacts 61 Section 6: Contacts This section explains how to use and manage y our Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numb ers to your phone’ s memor y . Accounts From the Accounts menu yo u decide if you want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data at any given time, or if yo u want the applications to synchronize automatically .
62 Note: Before you can sav e a contact to t he Phone, Contact settings must be set to Save new contacts to Phone . • Phone contacts are stored locally on the device. Note: If the phone is ever reset to it s factory default parameters, contacts stored on the phone can be lost.

Contacts 67 Contact Entr y Options 1. Fro m t he Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch an entry t o reveal the Contact entry’ s Overview Screen . This screen contains Name, contact numbers, email, and linked contac t information. 3. Press to reveal the context menu specific to this entr y .
68 4. T ap the se cond contact entr y (the entr y in which to link). The second contact is now linked with the first and the account information is merged into one screen. Note: The information is still mainta ined in both entries, but displays in one record for easier viewing when you link the c ontacts.
Contacts 69 4. T ap the radio button next to the entr y information you want to be the primary information (such as na me, phone number , or email) and sele ct Save .
70 Note: These must be contacts stored on the phone. External entries (Google , Exchange, etc...) can not be transferred in this manner . 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. From the Contacts Li st, press and then tap Import/Export ➔ Export to SIM card .
Contacts 71 5. Yo u r Contacts tab then reflects any updated Contact info rmation. Note: Syncing of contacts re quires you are logged into your Gmail and Co rporate accounts via the device.
72 Y ou will need to have an existing Facebook account before you can synchronize your contacts between your phone and this account type. Important! This process not only synchronizes your contact info rmation but also your status, events, and more. 1.

76 Section 7: Messages This section describes ho w to send or receive different types of message s. It also explains the features and functiona lity associat ed with messaging.
Messages 77 Note: For the Group option, if the number of recipients is less than 10, all members in the group are added. Dele te any unnecessary members in the list by selecting the trash can icon and deleting unwanted entries. 4. 78 Viewing Newly Received Messages When you receiv e a messag e, your phone notifies you by displayin g within the Noti fication area at the top left of your Home screen. T o read a message: 1. Open the Notifica tion Bar and select the message. For more in formation, refer to “Notificat ion Bar” on page 20.

80 The following Messaging settings are available: Message skin • Message skin : applies one of several interface skins to the messaging appl iation . Choose from: Default, Edge,Glos s, and Sti cky note. Stora ge settings • Delete old messages : deletes old messages once the message limit has been reached.

At the Yo u r a c c o u n t s screen, name the account and enter a screen name to identify yourself on this account. If yo u have a lready setu p this account, skip to step 6.

From the email lis t screen, press and then tap More ➔ Account settings . 5. Alter any of th e following sett ings: • Account name : displays your uniquely crea ted account dis play name.

88 Google T alk Google T alk™ is a free Windows and web-based application for instant messa ging offered by Google. Conversation lo gs are automati cally saved t o a Chats area in your Gmail account. This allows you to search a chat log and store them in your Gmail accounts.

90 Camera and Camcorder Options Y ou can change options using your keypad in capture mode. Camera Options The following shor t cuts are availabl e for the camera: Note: The options disappear after a fe w seconds. T ouch the screen to disp lay the tab, then touc h the tab to vi ew these opti ons.
Multimedia 91 Camera settings: •T i m e r : allows you to set a time delay before the camera ta kes the phot o. Select the len gth of delay you want an d touch th e Off, 2 sec, 5 sec, and 10 sec. When you press the Camera ke y , the camera takes the phot o after t he specifie d time el apses.
92 1. Recording mode : Normal or Limit for MMS. 2. Brightness : sets the total amount of light allowed to fall on the subject through the lens sensor while recording a video. T ouch and drag the slider to th e left to decre ase the value, or to the right to increase the v alue.

94 •M o r e : provides yo u with the add itional options su ch as: – Send to My Album Online : allows you to s end the file to your pre-config ure My Album Online. – Set Def ault Destinati on : allows you to as sign a default action to take after tak ing an image (Rec ent log, Phonebook, Online a lbum, Email address or Phone number).

This imag e is spread across all avai labl e screens. • Lock screen W allpaper assigns the selected image to the background for the lock screen. • Contact icon assigns the selected image as the display ed image for a select ed Contact.
96 Accessing Videos When you shoot a video, the file i s saved in the Camera folder . Y ou can view your videos immediately or view them any time in the Camera folder . 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Applications ) ➔ ( Gallery ) . 2. Select a folder lo cation and ta p a video icon to begin video playback.
