7 Section 2: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activating your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessary to in stall both the battery and SIM into their corresponding internal compartments.

11 Switching the Phone On or Off 1. Press and hold or until the phone switches on. The phone launches the activation splash screen and then proceeds to search for the network. Once the network ha s been found, you can make or receive calls. Note: The display langua ge is preset to Engli sh at the factory.

19 Section 4: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu navigation for your phone. The a885 has done away with the need for navigation wheels or keypads. The a885 is completely navigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ouching an onscreen option activates the feature.
Menu Navigation 20 Openin g an Appli cation 䊳 T ap the associated onscreen icon. • Press to exit from the current menu and return to the previous screen. • Press to exit from the current location/fu nction, cancel your input and return to the Idle screen.

Menu Navigation 22 2. T ouch the Alarm Time field and then adjust the hour and minutes values by entering manually (Keypad tab) or using either the +/- buttons or by qu ickly sliding your fingertip over the numbers (Jog tab). W idgets The Widget bar provides quick access to mini-programs (widgets).

Menu Navigation 24 T oda y : Displays the current date (month/day/year). • Drag and drop the T oday widget onto the desktop to view the date. Calendar : Allows you to access the Calendar feature. With the Calendar feature, you can: • Consult the calendar by month, week, or day .
25 Bluetooth : From this application you can activate Bluetooth and configure it so other Bluetooth devices can see your device by name. • Drag and drop, then tap the Bluetooth icon to launch the Bluetooth application. • For more informatio n, refer to “Bluetooth” on page 1 18.
Menu Navigation 26 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the de sktop to use the application or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dra gging them onto the screen (ex: Blueto oth and Alarms ).
27 2. While still holding the icon, drag it away from the widget bar and drop it on the main screen ( 2 ). Then drag it back into its new location in the list. Or , you can drag it away from the widget bar in a single motion and drop it in the desired location on the widget bar .

29 Corr ecting an Entered N um b er Use the following steps to correct a mis-typed entry when dialing. 1. After entering a number using the keypad. • If you make a mistake, touch to erase a single character . • Press and hold to erase the entire string of numbers.

31 2. T ouch the drop-down list located at the top right of the screen to select from All , Missed , Made , or Received . If the number or caller is listed in your Contacts, the associated name is displayed. View ing A ll C a l l s 1. From the Call Hi story menu, touch the drop-down and select the All option.

Call Functions 34 In Idle mode, you can also adjus t the ringer volume using these same ke ys . In-Call Options During an active call there are several functions available by touching a corresponding onscreen button. • Speaker On/Off routes th e phone’s audio through e ither the sp eaker or through the earpiece.
35 Switching Betw een Ca lls When you have an active call and a call on hold, you may s witch between the two calls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.
Call Functions 36 Call W aiting Menu to Activated . Y ou are notified of a n incoming call by a call waiting tone. T o answer a call while you have a call in progress: 1. Press to answer the next incoming call. The first call is automatically put on hold.
37 Section 6: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to select the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the number of key strokes needed to enter text.
Entering T ex t 38 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eyboard There are three main keyboard layout keys that will change the onscreen keys within the QWERTY keyboard. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the upper right hand corner to iden tify which mode you are currently in.
39 3. T ouch each key only once for each letter. A list of word options displays and includes a number indicating the words available to chose from. 4. Use the up and down navigation keys in the word options box to select the desired word. 5. T ouch to complete the message and return to the previous screen.

41 Using Symbols in Portr a it Mode Symbol mode enables you to insert symbols and punctuation marks into text. 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bot tom of the screen and select Symbols ( ), then touch the desired symbol key . 2. T o display more symbols, touc h the left or right arrow key .
Entering T ex t 42 Changing the T ext Input Mode - Handwriting Y ou can write your message using the Handwriting mode but if at any time you feel you can’t remember how to input text, you can touch the Input Select field and select Keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: abc , Abc , ABC , Numeric , and Symbols .
43 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bot tom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator the n changes to which activates the Initial uppercase function.

45 Section 7: Understanding Y our Contacts This section allows you to manage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in your C ontacts. Contacts entries can be sorted by name, entry , or group.
Understanding Y our Contacts 46 • Caller Image to retrieve a previously stored image from your Picture folder and assign it to this entry . Select an image and touch Add to assign the image and return to the previous Add New Contact screen.

Additional fields include: • Mobile : adds an additional Mobile number field for the entry . •H o m e : adds an additional Home number field for the entry .

T ouch ➔ Save to Con tacts ➔ New . • Select Update if this was a previously created entry and your are adding the current number to the previous entry .
49 5. T ouch . 6. T ouch to store your changes. Using Contacts Dialing a Num b er from C on tac ts Once you have stored phone numbers in Contacts, you can dial them easily and quickly by either using their SIM card location number or by using the Search field to locate the entry .

T ouch . Managing Contacts Y ou can copy , delete, and view t he memory status for the Phone and SIM entries on your phone.
55 Deleting All of the Contac ts Y ou can delete all Phone or SIM entries from your phone’s memory . Deleting all entries fr om the Phone 1. In Idle mode, touch ➔ Contacts ➔ Contacts ➔ Delet e . 2. T ouch the All field to place checkmarks alongside all the current entries.
Understanding Y our Contacts 56 – Additional No. 2 :if you have added additional numbers to contacts saved on the SIM card, this is a count er of the number of SIM contacts with a third number saved on your SIM card. – Email : tells you how many entries are in use.
57 Section 8: Messaging This section describes how to send or recei ve different types of messages. It also includes the features and functionality associated with messaging.
Messaging 58 Note: If the number of recipients are l ess than 10, all member s in the group will be added. Y ou will need to delete any unnecessary memb ers in the list by selecting the t ras h can icon and deleti ng un wanted entries.
59 • Slide Options : allows you to add more images to the current message but then have those configured to display as a slideshow on the recipients phone.

Messaging 62 synchronization is completed, the phone stays connected to the computer . If any change is m ade, Microsoft® ActiveSync® automatically will begin synchronization. T o begin synchronization, touch Sync in Microsoft® ActiveSync® on your phone.

Messaging 64 • Keep a Copy : Saves a copy of the outgoing text message. 2. For example, touch Keep a Copy and touch to store a local copy of all outgoi ng text messages. Configuring the T ext Message Center 1. From Messaging Settings page, touch T ext Message ➔ Te x t Message Center .
65 – Reject Advertisement : allows you to automatically reject messages with a category of advertisement. •M M S P r o f i l e s : to configure you Network parameters (For more information, refer to “Changing the W AP Profiles” on page 90.) • Auto Resize Image : to configure the size limits of the images added to new picture messages.

69 R ecorded A udio This menu shows a list of saved voice memos. When a voice memo is recorded and saved, it is stored in the Recorded Audio folder . T o access this menu use the following steps: 1. T ouch ➔ My f ile s ➔ Audio ➔ Recorded Audio .
My Files 70 • Information : displays an onscreen listing of the image’s properties such as: name, format, size, etc. • Send : lets you send the current ly active image vi a Message, via Bluetooth, or via Exchang e ActiveSync.

SharePix 80 Section 11: SharePix SharePix allows you to upload your photos to the photo sharing websites Facebook, Picasa, Flic kr , Photobucket, Friendster , and MySpace. Y ou can also download your friends’ photos to your phone. Launching SharePix 1.

TELUS Shop 82 Section 13: TELUS Shop The TELUS Shop menu option allows you to buy a variety of multimedia files, such as ringtones and graphics. Y our phone has embedded links to the web sites providing you with download services, preset by your service provider .
83 Section 14: Wir eless W e b Y our phone is equipped with a W AP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser which allows yo u to access the Internet. This section explains how to access the WAP services of your service provider and navigate the WAP browser .
Wireless Web 84 Changing the O r ien ta tion of the W eb page The a885 comes equipped with an orien tation detector that can tell if the phone is being h eld in an upright (Portrait) or sideways (Landscape) orientation. This is useful when enterin g text.

Scrolling Within a Web P age As with other menu items and pages on your phone, scrolling requires that steady directional pressure be applied onscreen via via your fingertip. In Idle mode, touch ➔ Wireless Web ➔ ➔ Cookie Option s . 2. T ouch one of the following options: • Accept All: allows all cookies to be placed on your phone.

93 Section 16: Calendar The calendar feature allows you to view the Month, Week, and Day layout views. It also s hows any Missed Alarm Events that have occurred. Creating a New Ev ent 1. T ouch ➔ Calendar ➔ Create Event . 2. T ouch the Tit l e field and use the onscreen keyboard to enter a name for this specific event.
Calendar 94 • Repeat : allows you to set the number of repetitions allowed for this appointment (Off, Everyday , Every Week, Every Month, or Every Y ear). Once selected, all remaining alarm settings are enabled. T ouch Save to store the option. • Repeat Unti l : allows you to set as duration for this appointment by assigning an expiration date.
95 Section 17: T ools T ools T ools (such as camera, camcorder , calendar , and alarms) are feature options that allow you to use your handset for a variety of non-phone related activities. T o access any of the tools, perform the following: 䊳 T ouch ➔ T ool s .
T ools 96 If the phone does not recognize your command the Command not recognized screen displays with two options: • Tu t o r i a l : provides instr uctions on how t o use voice commands. • Restart : touch and try the command options again. Speak clearly when giving your command.
97 3. During the recording process you can either touch Stop ( ) to s top the recording or Pause ( ) to temporarily halt the recording. Once t he audio recording has stopped, the message is automatically saved. 4. Once stopped, choose from one of the following options: •P l a y : allows you to play the memo.
T ools 98 – Alarm T one sets the sound file which is played when the alarm is activated. – Alarm V olume adjusts the alarm’s volume (1 - 7). 2. T ouch Save to store the alarm details and Save again store this new event. 3. T ouch On from the Auto Power-up field to keep the alarm event active even if the phone is turned of f.
99 2. Select any of the following options: • Tit le : enter a title for this ta sk (up to 15 characters). •P r i o r i t y : allows you assign the task a priority (High, Medium, or Low). •S t a r t D a t e : enter a date for this task to begin. •D u e D a t e : enter a date for this task to end.
T ools 100 3. If needed, touch the Tip field and use the keypad to change the tip percentage. 4. If needed, touch the Split field and use the keypad to change the number of persons that will be splitting the bill. 5. The amount of the Tip, th e bi ll T otal, and the amount each person should pay appear in the lower half of the screen.
