Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the Mem or y Car d Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.

14 Icons This list identifies th e symb ols you’ll see on your phone’ s display and Indicator area: Displays your current signa l strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Indicates that the Airplane Mode is active. Y ou cannot send or rece ive any ca lls or access online in formation.

16 Here is an exam ple: Y ou might be in the middle of ty ping up an email or text message, when you suddenly real ize that you ne ed to make a quick ca ll. T ypically , you wo uld ha ve to exi t from your current message, navigate to the Idle screen, make y our call (page 21), after which you would have to go back and re-create your message.
Menu Navigation 17 Section 3: Menu Na vigation This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a797 is completely navigable by either an onscreen touch or by using th e QWERTY keyp ad. • T o uching an onscreen option activ ates the fea ture.
18 Opening an Appli cation 䊳 T ouch and tap the associated onscreen icon. • Press to exit from the curre nt menu and return to the previou s scre en. • Press to exit from the current locatio n/function, cancel your input an d return to the Idle screen.
Menu Navigation 19 Note: Scrolling requires that you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry.

Call Functions 23 Making a Call Using Speed Dial Y ou can assign a shortcut number to a phone number for speed dialing. 1. T o uch ➔ Address Book ➔ Address Book Settings ➔ Speed Dial . 2. The Speed Dial screen displays showing the numbers 1 through 9.
24 Quick R eply Y ou can use the Quick Reply fea t ure to send a text message to someone when you are not able to take th eir call. T o use the Quick Reply feature, foll ow these steps: 1. At the incoming cal l screen, touch and slide Reject + Message to the right.

26 Play a Video Sh are Re cording During a call (while not in a Liv e Video Sh are session) you can share a recorded vide o for the re cipient. 1. T ouch More ➔ Vid eo S ha re ➔ Recorded and then select from the availa ble files in your Vi de o fo lder .
Call Functions 27 Note: If there is a voicemail sent by the same number , associa ted icons are displayed and can then be selected. 2. Scroll through the li st of missed calls. 3. T o move to another call type, touch the call drop-down list (upper right of Calls page) and make your selection.
28 4. At the Create screen, touch the empty text field and use the keypad to type in a message. 5. When you are done with your message, touch Send . 6. T o add additional recipients, touch the recipi ents field. Insert new recipients by: • Pressing the Ta p t o A d d field a nd then enter ing the number manua lly .

30 In-Call Options During an active call there are several functions a vailable by touching a corresponding onscreen button. • Speaker On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Speaker to On to route the audio th rough the speaker .
Call Functions 31 Switching Be twee n Calls When you have an ac tive call and a c all on hold, you m ay switch between the two calls, changi ng the one on hold to acti ve and placing the other on hold.
32 Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you. Note: If you are already in Video Share or you ha ve a call on hold, you need to select Mute/Unmute. T o s witch the microphone of f temporarily during a call: 1.

34 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters usin g the Q WERTY ke yboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the numb er of key strokes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 35 Changing the T ext Input Mode The available T ext Input modes are: T9 Predictive T ext , Numeric/ Symbols (123Sym) , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the upper right hand corner to identi fy which mode you are currently in.
36 Using T9 Predictive T ext Mode 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and touch T9 Predictive T ext . 2. will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Press each key only once for each letter . A list of word options displays and inc lude s a number indicating the words available to cho se from.
Entering T ext 37 Using Numeric/Symbols Mode 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and touch Numeric/Sy mbols . 2. will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Press the keys f or the number s or symbols that you want in your message.

T ouch each key only once for each letter . T o add a number or a symbol, you can change T ext Input Mode or you can press and then the key that corresponds to the number or symbol.
Changing Y our Settings 39 Section 6: Changing Y our Settings This section includes tips on how to use your pho ne’ s features, as well as how to change and c ustomize the display settings, call handling, security settings, and other settings associated with your phone.

50 A uto Sc reen Lock The Auto Screen Lock feature lock s your phone when th e Backlight turns off. Press and hold the key to unlock the keypad. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone . 2. T ouch On or Off from the Auto Screen Lock field. For more information on setting the Backlight time settings, see “Backlight Time” on page 47.
Changing Y our Settings 51 Lock Applications Using this menu, you can lock your applications and media contents (apps, messages, im ages, and sounds) from being accidentally ac cessed, altere d or deleted. Once you lock the contents, you must enter the pho ne’ s password to access the associated menus.
52 2. Enter the current phone password and touch . Note: Initially , the phone will not have a password assigned, and step 2 will not be necessary. Once a password is assigned, all steps are necessary. 3. Enter the new pass word and touch . 4. Re-enter the same password and touch .

Changing Y our Settings 57 Bluetooth Secure Mode When the Bluetooth Visibility is turned on, you r phone is wirelessly transmitting its phone n ame and status to every device within its range. This tr ansmission can pose a security risk and incite unauthorized connection to your pho ne.
58 3. T ouch . Network Profile Configur ation Y our phone is wirelessly connecti ng to the Internet vi a a built in WAP browser . Connection can be made via either one of three available W AP browsers: MEdia Net, A T &T MMS (MultiMedia Server), and A T&T I MS.

62 Memor y Card Details Allows you to vi ew specific informatio n related to the current microSD card being used for storage. 䊳 From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Memor y Management ➔ Memory Card Details . Note: Memory card is optional. For m att in g t he Mem or y Ca r d Allows you to format your memo r y card.

82 Section 9: Camera This section explains how to use the camera on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoo t video by using the built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapixel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Important!: Do not take photos of people without their permission.

Messaging 93 Section 11: Messaging This section describes how to send or receive different ty pes of messages. It also includ es the features an d functionalit y associated with messaging.
94 Note: If the number of recipients are less than 10, all members in the group will be added. Y ou will need to delete any unnecessary members in the list by selecting the trash can icon and deleting unwanted entries. Note: Enter additional recipients by separating each entry with a semicolon (;) then using the previous procedure.
