Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding int ernal compartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot if the SIM is not detected. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone. Char ging a Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li -ion batter y . The T ravel Adapter that is used to charge t he battery, i s included with your phone.
8 2. Plug the flat end o f the T ravel Adapter into the P ower/ Accessor y Interface connector a nd the other end into a standard AC wall outlet . 3. When charging is finished, remove the flat end from the interface connector jack on the phone .
Getting Started 9 Setting Up Y our V oice Mail 1. In Idle mode, press , then touch and hold . Y ou may be prompted to enter a password. Note: Y ou can also access your voicemail from the on-screen keypad by touching then pressing or touch Call . 2. Follow the tutorial to crea te a password, record a greeting, and record your name.

16 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a697 has done away with the n eed for navigation wheels or keypads. The a697 is complete ly navigable by either an on-screen touch or scroll. • T ouching an on-scr een option activates th e feature.
Menu Navigation 17 Navigating T hr oug h Menus As you navigate through a menu, options display on the screen as scrollable li sts. Menu tabs (located at the bottom of most screens, provide access to additiona l screen options). T o navigate a scrollable list: 1.
18 Note: Scrolling requires that you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry. Opening an Appli cation 䊳 T ap the associated on-screen ico n.
Menu Navigation 19 W idgets The Widget bar provides quick access to mini-programs (widgets). This bar (located a t the left of the Id le screen) gives you informat ion at a glance and provides easy ac.
20 The following table contains a description of each available Widget. Widg et Manage r : allows you to choose which widgets will be displa yed on th e widget bar . Analog Clock : displays the current time on an analog c lock. Digital Clock : displays the current time on a digital clo ck.
Menu Navigation 21 Facebook : opens the fac ebo ok.com web page. To d a y : displays day of the week and date. Calendar : allows you to access the Calendar feature. With the Calendar feature, you can: • Consult the calendar by month, week, or day . • Set schedules and no te anniversaries.
22 Record Audio : allows you to record voice memos. For more information, refer to “Record Audio ” on page 139. Memo : allows you to access the Memo feature. For more infor mation, refer to “Memo” on page 144. Time r : allows you to easil y access your Timer .
Menu Navigation 23 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop (Idle Scre en) to use the application or feature, then dra g it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. There are thr ee different widg et desktops you can use. Y ou can have different widgets on all t hree desktops.
24 Note: Y ou can drag a widget to a location of your choice on the desktop or , just touch the widget on the widget bar and it will display in the center of the desktop. R ear ranging Widge ts Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets.

26 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a ca ll. It also includes the features and function ality associated with ma king or answering a call. For more informat ion, refer to “Call Settings” on page 57. Making a Call 1.

Call Functions 29 Note: Y ou can answer a call while using the Address Book or other menu feature. After ending the call, the phone returns to the previously active function screen.
30 Note: If the number or caller is listed in your Address Book, the associated name is displayed. View ing A ll Calls 1. From the Recent Calls menu, touch the drop-down and select the All option.
Call Functions 31 Calling Bac k a Missed Call T o call back a missed call number: 1. T o uch Call (to ca ll the most recent missed call) or T ouch Vie w a l l on the Missed Calls di alog. A list of the most recently missed c alls is displayed. 2. T ouch the desired missed call.
32 Deleting a Missed Call 1. T ouch Vie w a ll on the Missed Calls dialog. A li st of the most recently misse d calls is displayed. 2. T ouch Delete . 3. Place a check mark adjacent to those entries you wish to select for deletion. • T ou ching All toggles the pl acement of a check m ark next to every entry in the l ist.
Call Functions 33 Dat a Counter Data Counter refers to the amount of data (volume) to and from the phone. 1. T o uch ➔ T ools ➔ Recent Calls ➔ Call Manager ➔ Data Counter .
34 – To u c h Unmute to unmute the m icrophone. • Bluetooth to activate or deactivate Bluetooth. • Dial to display the on-screen keypa d, where you can choose to Save the entered number to your Address Book, Send a new text message, or initiate a new call.
Call Functions 35 T o end a specific call 1. Press the associated tab ( In call or On hold ). 2. T o uch to end the specific call. 3. Press the key to end the remaining call. Using the Spe akerphone During an Activ e Call While in an ac tive call, it is possibl e to enable the speakerp hone feature.
36 Call W aiting The Call W aiting feature allows you to answer an incoming call while you have a ca ll in progress, if this ser vice is supported by the network, and you have set the ➔ Settings ➔ Call s ➔ Voice Call ➔ Call Wa iting Menu to Activated .
Entering T ext 37 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the nu m ber of key strokes ne eded to enter text.
38 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eypad There are three main keypad la yout keys that wi ll change the on- screen keys within the QWERTY key pad. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
Entering T ext 39 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and touch . The small circle above T9 will turn green and will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Begin typing a word. A list of word options displays and includes a number indicating th e words availabl e to chose from.
40 Using Emoticon (Emo) Mode 1. Rotate your phone counterclockwise to a Landscape orientation. Note: The Emo option is available only when mode has been selected. 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and touch . 3. T ouch either or to c ycle through a dditional keys.
Entering T ext 41 Using Numeric in P or trait Mode The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouc h the T ext Input Mo de butto n at the bot tom of the screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter .
42 3. Use your finger tip to write out each ch aracter . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key ( ) to create a space betw een letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
Entering T ext 43 The following buttons can also be used in Handwriting mode: Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activates th e Initial uppercase function.

Changing Y our Settings 49 Backligh t Time The backlight turns the screen on using a preset br ightness level. When the time (set in this feat ure) runs out, the touch screen turns off. The phone can also be set to lock when the Backlight Time runs out.
50 5. T ouch the Time field then adjust the hour and minutes values by using either the up/down inpu t arro ws or by quickly sliding your fingertip over the numbers to scroll through their avai lable values. • T ouch either AM or PM . • To u c h to complete the assignment.
Changing Y our Settings 51 Vibration Fe edback Y ou can set the level of vibration intensity that oc curs when you touch the screen. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Vibration Feedback . 2. Drag the Vibration Intensity slider to the inte nsity level yo u desire (range is 0-4).
52 Au t o Ke y p a d L o c k The Auto Keypad Lock fea tur e locks your phone when the Backlight turns off. T o modify this f eature, follow these steps: 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone . 2. T ouch On or Off from the Auto Keypad Lock field.
Changing Y our Settings 53 Check PIN code When the Check PIN code feature is enable d, you must enter your PIN each time you s witch on the phone. Consequently , an y person who does not have yo ur PIN cannot use your phone without your approval . 䊳 T o uch On or Off from the Check PIN Code field.
54 Note: The PIN2 code is provided by A T&T . Entering an incorrect PIN2 code can cause the phone to lock, at which point, you will have to call AT&T customer service for assistance. Change Phone Passw or d The Change password f eature allows you t o change your current phone password to a new one.
Changing Y our Settings 55 Note: Not all SIM cards have a PIN2. If your SIM card does not, this menu does not display . 1. T o uch t he Change PIN2 Code field. 2. Use the on-screen k eypad to enter your PIN2 code and touch . 3. Enter the new PIN2 code and touch .
56 3. Press to return to the pr evious Phone settings page. Smar t Unlock Smart Unlock allows you to un lock your phone by drawing a preselected symbol with your finge r . In addition to unlocking your phone, you can immedi ately display your contacts, create a message, or launch an application.
Changing Y our Settings 57 Call Settings 䊳 From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Calls . Adjusting the General Call Settings 1. T o uch General and select from the following options: • Show My Number : allows you to select ho w your caller ID is handled w hen an outgoing call is initiated.
58 – T ouch one of the available options: Activa te , Deactiv ate , Check Status (checks the status of this service on your account). • Auto Redial : the phone au tomaticall y redial s the last acti ve number if the call wa s either cut off or you were unable to connect.
Changing Y our Settings 59 Device Name 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connectiv ity ➔ Bluetooth ➔ My Info . 2. T o uch t he Name field, touch and hold to erase the current name. 3. Use the on-screen k eypad to enter the new name for this device and touch .
60 2. T ouch On or Off from the Remote SIM Cont rol field. 3. T ouch . Bluetooth Servi ces The Bluetooth speci fication is a protocol that describes how the short-range wireless te chnology works, whereas services describe the indivi dual devices that are supported.

62 – Static IP : specify if you want to manually enter an IP addre ss. If you want the IP addr ess to be automatically assigned by the se r ver , remove the check mark. – Static DN S : specify if you wan t to manually enter the Domain Name Server (DNS) address.

64 Address Book Settings T o configure your Addr ess Book application. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Applications Settings ➔ Address Book . 2. T ouch one of t he following fields and edit the information: • My Business Card : creates and a ttaches a virt ual business card to be used as an attachment t o outgoing messa ges.

Understanding Y our Address Book 79 Y ellow P a ges Mobile The Y ellowpages Mobile applicat ion provides quick and ready access to businesses, map locations, and storage of your fa vorite searches (My Place). Th is application allows you to tap into loc al businesses, locations, and events, connecting you to your search in real-time.
80 Section 8: Messaging This section describes how to send or receive diffe rent types of messages. It al so includes the features and functi onality associated with messaging.
Messaging 81 Note: If the number of recipients are less than 10, all members in the group will be added. Y ou will need to delete any unnecessary members in the list by selecting the trash can icon and deleting unwanted entries. 3. T ouch the empty text field and use the on-scr een keypad to enter a message.
82 – Business Card : allows you to inser t the contact information for an entry from Address Book directly to your message as an attached file. – Event : allows you to in sert an Event entry from your calendar d irectly to your message as an attache d file.
Messaging 83 3. T ouch a message you wish to view. The selected m essage appears in the displa y. Tip: When viewing a text message, press the Up or Down volume keys to increase or decrease the font size of the message text. Six different font sizes are available.
84 • Delete : deletes the current message. •M o r e : provides thes e additiona l message functi ons: – Forward : allows you to forward the message. – Save to Address B ook : allows you to s ave the recipient or sender’ s information from the message to your Address Book as either a New or Updated entry .
Messaging 85 Using Instant Messaging (IM) Instant Messaging allows you to send and receive instant messages using AIM, Me ssenger , and Y ahoo! ® communitie s. Note: Before using this feature, you need to subscribe to a messaging service. For further details, contact your service provider .
86 Deleting Message s within a Folder 1. T ouch ➔ Messaging . 2. Select a message folder ( Inbox , Sent , Outbox , or Drafts ). A list of messages in the fold er appears in the display . 3. T ouch Delete and touch an entry to mark it for selection with a chec kmark.

88 – Send Read Report : when this option is enabled, your phone sends a notification back to th e recipient indicating that your message has been received.

90 Used Space Y ou can chec k the amount of the memory bein g used an d the memory re maining for Multimedia , T ext, Push, and Configuration Messages. The display shows th e total space inc luding the used and free space. Y ou can also view how much space is currently occupied by each message box.
Camera 91 Section 9: Camera This section explains ho w to use the camera on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoot video by using th e built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapi xel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Import ant!: Do not take photos of people without their permission.
92 Note: The number of JPEG pictures remaining on the selected media appears in the upper-right of the screen. This is an approximate number of total pictures which can be taken at the current image size. 4. If desired, before taking the ph oto, you can touch on-screen icons to access various camera options.
Camera 93 Recording Mode : allows you to set th e recording mode to either: Normal (l imited only by available spac e on destination location) or Li mit for MMS (limited by MMS size restrictions). (Recording Mo de i s only available in Camcorder mode).
94 Pictures/Videos Fo lder Options After you ha ve taken a photo or shot a video, you can access various options from the Pi ctures/Video Folder page. Camera/Camcorder Settings tab (upper right corner) (continued): • Shutter Sound : allows you to set the Shutter sound to 3 different shutter sounds.
Camera 95 䊳 T o uch ➔ and then to uch one of the available options: • Play Slideshow ( ): to play the available images and videos (from the Pictures and Videos folders) within a sl ideshow. T ouch the Up/ Down arrows to set the duration of each on-screen file.
96 • Information : displays a listing of the image’ s properties such as: name, format, size, etc. • Send : lets you send the currently ac t ive image as part of a new multimedia message, to an external device via Blue tooth, or to HP’ s online Snapfish ® service.
