4 Get started Set up yo ur phone F or instructions on using your phon e 's buttons, charger , battery , and other hardwar e featur es, check the printed Quick Ref e rence Guide that came with y our phone. The first time you turn on the phone, y ou'll see a W elcome screen.
5 Why use a Google A ccount ? A Google Account lets y ou organize and access y our personal info rmation fr om any computer or mobile devi ce: S Never lose your contacts again . When y ou sign in to y our phone with a Google account, all the contacts you associate with that a ccount in the Pe ople app are automatically backed up .
6 Get around A fter you finish setting up your phone, Home opens. A t the bott om of the scr een, you'll find three Na viga tion buttons. They'r e alwa ys av ailable .
7 Just abov e the Navigation buttons, no tice the F avorites tra y: The app icons you keep in the tray remain visible on every Home screen. The All Apps icon in the center is permane nt. T ouch it to see all yo ur apps and widge ts. The middle of your Home screen can hold app and widget icons, plus folders.
8 A t the top o f the screen, you'll see some thing like this: Status ic ons on the left tell you which apps ha ve sent y ou notificati ons; f or exampl e, that a me ssage has arriv ed, or it's time f or a meeting. S T o see your no tifications, swipe your fi nger down fr om the top of the screen.
9 T ouch & type Use your fingers t o manipulat e icons , butto ns, menus , the onscreen k eyboard, and other it ems on the touchscreen. Y ou can also chan ge the screen's or ientation. T o select or activat e something, to uch it. T o type something, such as a name, passwor d, or se arch terms , just touch wher e you want to type .
10 S Rotate the screen : On most scre ens, the orientation o f the screen r otates with your de vice as you turn it . Y ou can change this Display setting.
11 Use the lock scr een T o protect per sonal inf ormation, you can adjust y our phone's lock settings: 1 F rom the Home or All Apps sc reen, touch the Settings icon . 2 Scroll down and touch Security . 3 T ouch Screen lock . 4 T ouch the type of lock you'd lik e to use .
12 While the screen is lock ed, you can r espond to incomi ng calls in three ways. T ouch the white phone icon and slide over one of these icons: Tip T o edit text responses fr om within the Phone app, touch Menu icon > Settings > Quick responses .
13 Search the w eb Google Search can help yo u find anything yo u need on the web: S At the top of an y Home scr een, touch Go ogle t o type your sear ch term, or the Microphone button to speak it.
14 Mak e your self at home Change the wallpaper Wallpapers are images from Gallery (pictures you shot with Camera, sync ed from Picasa, and so on) , still images included with the system, and live images (s uch as an animation or a map that centers on your location).
15 Set ringtone & other sounds Y our phone uses sounds and vibrations to communicate with y ou, including ri ngtones , notifications, alarms , and na vigation f eedback. Y o u can customize an y of these sounds, as w ell as contr olling their volume and the volume f or music, videos, games, and other media.
16 Change other Sound se ttings T o change other sounds and vibrations , go to Sett ings > Device > Sound and t ouch the one you w ant: S Volumes sets the master vo lume separately f or musi c, ringtones & notifica tions , and alarms.
17 Mak e a phone call 1 T ouch the Pho ne icon on the Home or All Apps screen. If the Phone app opens to a lis t of numbers inst ead of the ke ypad, swipe le ft or touch the tab t o return to the keypad. 2 T ouch the keys to en ter the number . 3 T ouch below the ke ypad to dial.
18 Get your contacts If you have a Google Account, an y contacts associated with that ac count are automatically backed up by Google. This means all your contacts are always a vaila ble on the web and can be synced to any Android phone that's set up with the same account.
19 S On your phone: use the People app . S F rom a br owser on a desktop computer: Go to google.com /contacts . If you ar en't already logged in , you need to pr ovide your Gmail address and passw ord. T o import contacts from a SIM card: 1 Install the SIM card wi th your cont acts on it in your new phone.
20 Arrange & w ork with apps T o see all your apps, to uch the All Apps icon on an y Home screen. The main All Apps screen opens. This is where y ou can see all your apps, including those downloaded from Android Mark et. Y ou can move app icons to any of your Home screens.
21 Use folders Y ou can comb ine sever al app icons in a f older . Drop one app icon over another on a Home screen, and the two icons will be combined. F rom an y Home screen, you can S Open a folder : T ouch it. The f older opens: S Rename a folder : T ouch its name.
22 Add widgets Widgets are like windows into your apps. T hey're a vailable from an All Apps tab for y ou to move ont o your Home screens . T o see your widgets: 1 T ouch the All Apps icon on your Home scre en. 2 T ouch Widgets at the top o f the scr een.
23 Manage notifications Notif ications r eport the arri val of new messages , calendar e vents, an d alarms , as well as ongoing ev ents, such as when you'v e configured your phone as a Wi-Fi ho tspot. When you r eceive a no tification, its icon appears in th e t op left corner of the screen.
24 T ry some apps Start Gmail Y ou can use Gmail to read and write ema il from any mobile device or browser . A ll your email is always up to date and available no matter whe re you check it from.
25 S Organize email . Check the box beside a message to select it. Then use the icons and menu along the bott om of the scr een to man age the selected messages . S Change your settings . T ouch the Menu icon to change your pref erences, add an account, or get Help.
26 Find People The People app gives you quick and easy access to ever yone you wan t to re ach. When you fir st turn on your phone and sign into a Googl e Account, any exis ting contacts fr om that account ar e synced with your People app.
27 S Edit details . While viewing a contact, touch the Menu icon and choos e options t o edit or share contact details, set ringt one, and so on. Y ou can al so touch the star beside the Menu icon t o add a con tact to you r Favorites list . S Change your setting s .
28 Manage your Calendar The Calendar app let s you view and edit y our schedule. When you firs t set up your phone, you configured it to use an e xisting Google Accoun t (such as Gmail), or you cr eated a new one.
29 Use y our Camera The Camer a app is a combinatio n camera and camcor der that ac tually c onsists o f two came ras , one facing back ( towar d you) and one facing f orward ( a way fr om you). The f orward-f acing camera includes a Panorama mode that allows y ou to crea te a single image by panning acr oss a scene.
30 While Camer a is open, you can also to uch these icons t o adjust its settings: Icon Name Description Mode Switch among ca mera, video, and panorama modes. Switch Camera T o ggles between cameras on the front and back of the phone. Zoom T ouch & hold, then slide to zoom in and out.
31 Beam screen content Y ou can beam a web page, a video, or other content fr om your scre en to another device by bringing the device s toge ther ( typically back to back). Before you begin : Make sur e both devices are unlocked, support Near Field Communication (NFC ), and hav e both NF C and Android Beam TM turned on .
32 Manage downloads Files , apps, and o ther items you do wnload fr om Gmail, Email, And roid Mar ket , or in ot her way s are s tor ed in your de vice's internal st orage. Y ou can use the Do wnloads app to view , reopen, or delete what you've downloaded.
33 T une perf ormance Optimize battery life Y ou can extend y our battery's life be tween charges by t urning off f eatures that you don't need. Y ou can also monitor how apps and sy stem r esources consume batt ery power . T o adjust the settings described he re, fir st touch the Settings icon on a Home or All Apps screen.
34 Check battery level and usage details G Open Settings > Device > Batte ry . The lis t at the bo ttom of the scr een show s the brea kdown of batt ery usage f or individual apps a nd services.
35 Optimize data usage Data usage ref ers to the amount of data uploaded or dow nloaded b y your de vice during a giv en period. Depending on the device and your wireless plan, you may be charged additional fees when your data usage exceeds your plan's limit.
36 T o adjust the settings describ ed here: 1 T ouch the Settings ic on on a Home or All Apps screen. 2 T ouch Wireless & networks > Data us age . By def ault, you see the settings f o r mobile data: that is, the da ta network or networ ks pr ovided by y our carrier: It's possible to show Wi-Fi data usage settings in a separate tab .
37 Set data usage limit 1 Check Set mobile data limit . A dialog ap pears tha t descri bes the limit you're se tting. 2 Read the message. If you're willing to pr oceed, click OK . The red line at the t o p of the gr aph acti va tes, so you can drag it up or down.
38 View or restrict data usage by app Some apps transfer data in the background; that is , when you're no t actually using the app , it may download data for futur e ref erence. Restricting background data usage for individual apps can sometimes be a useful way to reduce your o verall data us age.
39 Advanced data usage settings T wo other settings a vailable from the Menu icon ca n ha ve dramatic eff ects, but may sometimes be useful: G Data roaming can result in steep additional charges. Ho wev er , in some locations this may be the on ly w ay to c onn ec t to t he Inte rne t.
40 Optimize memory usage Y ou typically don't need to worry about managing apps bey ond insta lling, opening, and using them. But there may be times when you want to know mo r e about what's happening behind the scenes . Apps use two kinds of memory: internal storage and RAM.
41 Use the Apps screen The Apps screen allows you to adjust several aspects of the wa y your device us es memory . T o view these settings: 1 F rom a Home or All Apps scre en, touch the Settings icon .
42 T o view detai ls about an app or other item listed under any tab , touch its n ame. The inf ormation and controls available va ry among different types of apps, but commonly include: G Force stop but ton : Stops an app that is misbehaving. Stoppi ng an app, process, or service may cause your device to st o p working correctly .
43 L earn the Phone app Dial stor ed numbers Y ou can place calls from the Phone app , the People app , or other apps or widgets that display contact i nf ormation. Wherev er you see a phon e number , you can usually touch it to dial. T o dial using the Phon e app: G T ouch the Phone icon on a Home or All Ap ps scre en.
44 Y ou can switch applications during a call; for e xample, to look up information b y using the Browser . The green phone icon appears in the Status bar while the call is underway . T o return to the Phone app while a call is in progress: 1 Swipe down fr om the top of the scr een to re veal y our notifications.
45 Answ er or div ert calls When you receive a phone call, the Incoming Call screen opens, displaying the caller ID and any additional inf ormation about the call er that yo u've en ter ed in Pe ople. All incoming calls ar e re corded in the Phone a pp's Call log tab .
46 W ork with the Call log The Call log is a list of all the calls you've placed, received, or missed. It provides a convenient way t o redial a number , return a call, or add a number to your Contacts . Within the Phone app , the Call log is under the middle tab .
47 Place an Internet (SIP ) call Y ou can place calls over the In ternet when connected to a Wi-Fi n etwork, r ather than ov er your mobile network. T o do so, yo u must first configure yo ur phone to use an Internet calling account. Aft er you set up the accoun t, placing an Internet call is n o diff erent than placing an y other call.
48 Y ou'll also wan t to ad d SIP addr esses for the c ontacts y ou want to call this way . T o do so: 1 T ouch the contact's info in the Call log tab . 2 T ouch to go to the contact's car d. 3 T ouch the Menu icon , then Edit . 4 Scroll t o the bott om of the scre en, touch Add another field , and then Internet call .
49 Listen to y our v oicemail When you ha ve a new voicemail message, the voicemai l icon appears in the Status area at the top left of your scr een. T o read your voicemai l: 1 Swipe down from the top of the scre en to view your notifications . The voicemail no tification displays the num ber of unr ead messages and a number to dial.
50 Dial by v oice T o pla ce a phone call by speaking, us e the V oice Dialer a pp . If you hav e a BlueT o oth headset that supports voice dial ing, it may work with V oice Dia ler .
51 Options during a call During a call, you can G Answer another incoming call: Y ou see the Incoming Ca ll screen, displaying the caller ID and any additional inf o rmation about the caller that y ou've en ter ed in P eople.
52 G Mute yo ur microphone . G Put the other party on hold. G Switch to ano ther call in progress . G Make another call separat ely from the first call, which is put on hold.
53 Enter & edit te xt Use the k eyboard Y ou can enter text using the onscr e en ke yboard. Some a pps open it automatically . In others, you open it by touching wher e you want to type . As you ty pe, the ke yboard display s suggesti ons abov e the top row o f keys .
54 Basic editing G Move the insertion point : T ouch wher e you wan t to type . The cur sor blink s in the new position, and a gr een tab appea rs below it . Drag the tab to move the cursor . G Select text : T ouch & hold or doub le-tap within the te xt.
55 Tips & shortcuts G Type capital letters : T ouch the Shift ke y once to switch to ca pital lett ers f or one letter . Or touch & hold the Shift key while you type . When you release the k ey , the lowercase letters reappear . G Turn caps lock on : Double-tap or t ouch & ho ld the Shift k ey , so it changes to .
56 T ype text b y speaking Y ou can use voice input to type te xt by speaking. This featur e uses Google's sp eech-re cognition ser vice, so you mus t have a data connect ion on a mobile or Wi-Fi network to use it. T ext that you ente r by speaking is underlined.
57 Connect to netw ork s & de vices Connect to mobile network s Depending on your carrier and serv ice plan, your phone may connect auto mat ic all y to you r ca rr ier 's fas test a vaila ble data ne twork. Or y ou may need to insert a SIM card or conf igure details f or a specific carrier .
58 Mobile network settings Not e that you can't adjust mobile network setting s when Airplane mod e is selected. The settings av ailable ma y vary depending on y our de vice and plan. G Data enabled . Check to tu rn data access on f or all av ailable mo bile netw orks .
59 Connect to Wi-Fi netw orks Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that can pr ovide Int e rnet access a t dista nces of up t o 100 meters , depending on the Wi-F i rout er and your surr oundings. T o use Wi-Fi, you connect to a wireless access point, or " hotspot.
60 Add a W i- Fi ne t wor k Y ou can add a Wi-Fi network so y our device will r eme mb er it, along with any security credentials, and connect to it automatically when it's in ra nge. Y ou must also add a Wi- Fi networ k if the network doe s not broadcast its name (SSID ), or to add a Wi-Fi network when you are out of r ange.
61 Configure pro xy settings for a Wi-Fi network Some network administr ators r equire you to connect to internal or exter nal network resources vi a a pro xy ser ver . By default, the Wi-Fi network s you add ar e not configured to connect via a pro xy , but you can change that f or each Wi-Fi network you'v e added.
62 Set Wi-F i notific ations , disconnect pol icy , and other adv anced options T o work with advanced Wi-Fi settings: 1 T urn on Wi-Fi, if it's not already o n.
63 This screen also displays the following information: G MAC address : The Media Access Control (MAC ) address of your device when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
64 Connect to Bluetooth devices Bluetooth is a short -range wir eless communications technology us ed to comm unicate between devices over a dis tance of about 8 met ers. The mos t commo n Bluetoo th devices ar e headsets f or making calls or listening to music, hands- free kits for cars , and other portable devices, including laptops.
65 Change your phone's Bluetooth name Y our phone has a generic Bluetooth name by def ault, which is visibl e to other Bluet ooth devices when you connect them. Y ou can change the name so that it is mor e recognizab le. 1 Under Settings > Wireless & networks , mak e sure Bluet ooth is turned on.
66 Pair y our phone with a Bluetooth device Y ou must pair your phone with a device befor e you can connect t o it. Once you pair y our phone with a device, the y stay pair ed unless you unpair them. 1 Under Settings > Wireless & networ ks , mak e sure Bluetooth is turned on.
67 Connect to a Bluetooth device Once you've pair ed with a Bluetooth device, y ou ca n connect to it manually; f or example , to switch device s or to rec onnect aft er it is back in ra nge. 1 Under Settings > Wi reless & networks, make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
68 Obtain a network connection via Bluetooth tethering If you ha ve a computer or other device that can shar e its network connection via Bluetooth, y ou can configure y our phone to ob tain a network connection by Bluetooth tethering (sometimes called reverse teth er ing ).
69 Connect to k eyboar ds, mice, and other de vices Y ou can conne ct a ke y board, mouse , or even a jo ystick or other input device to your phone via USB or Bluetooth and use it just as you would with a PC . Y ou may need an adapter t o connect the ke yboard or other de vic e to your phone's USB port.
70 Mice When you connect a mouse to y our phone and mov e th e mouse , an arrow-sh aped curso r appears , just as on a comp uter: G Use the mouse to move the cursor . G Clicking, press ing, and dragging with the mouse butt on is equivalent to to uching, touching & hold- ing, and dragging with your f inger .
71 Connect to a Windows computer via USB Y ou can use a USB cable to connect yo ur phone to a Windows computer and transf er music, pictures , and other file s in both dir ections . This connection uses the MTP pr ot ocol, which is supported by most recent versions o f Windows.
72 Connect to a Macintosh computer via USB Y ou can use a USB cable to connect your phone t o a computer running M ac OS X with a USB cable and transf er music, pictures, and o ther files in both directions. This connection uses the MT P protocol, which is not supported by Mac OS X natively .
73 Share y our mobile data connection Y ou can share your phone's mobile data connection with a single comput er via USB tether ing or Bluetooth tethering. Y ou can also share yo ur data conne ction with up to 8 devices at once, by turning it into a portable Wi -Fi hots pot.
74 Share your phone's data connection via USB If your comput er is running Windows 7 , Mac OS X, or a recent dis tribution of some fla vors of Linux (such as Ubuntu), y ou can f ollow these instruct ions without any special preparation.
75 Share y our phone's data conn ection via B luetoo th If your comput er can obtain an Internet con nection via Bluetooth, y ou can configure your phone t o share it's mobile d ata connect ion with your computer . 1 Pair y our phone with your comput er .
76 Rename or secure y our portable h otspot Y ou can change the name of your phone's Wi-Fi ne twork name ( SSID) and secure it s Wi-Fi netw ork when it's acting as a portable hot spot. 1 Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mo re > Tethering & portable hotspot .
77 Connect to virtual priva te network s Virtual private netw orks (VPNs) allow you to connec t to the resour ces inside a secured local network, from outside that network.
78 Connect to a VPN 1 F rom the VPN screen, t ouch the name of the VPN. 2 In the dialog tha t opens, en ter an y reques ted cr edentials. 3 T ouch Connect . When you'r e connected to a VPN, a Status icon and notification are disp layed continuously .
79 Delete a V PN 1 F rom the VPN screen, touch & hold the name of the VPN. 2 T ouch & hold the VPN you want to delete . 3 In the dialog that opens , touch Delet e network.
80 Contr ol airplane mode & other n etwork settings These settings are av ailable under Settings > Wireless & netw orks > More . F ollow the links for detailed instructions: G Airplane mode . Check to turn off all the device's radios that transmit data.
81 Search b y te xt & voice Re fine Google Sear ch Google Search is available from the top of any Home screen: G Speak search terms : T ouch the Microphone icon . Aft er you sa y what you' re looki ng for , the Browser op ens to a list o f search r esults.
82 Manage Google Search priv acy settings 1 On a Home screen, touch Go ogle . 2 T ouch Menu icon > Se arch settings > G oogle Search . 3 Adjust any of these settings: Use Web History . Check to include sugges tions based on pre vious searches from y our computer or other devices.

85 Use V oice Ac tions In addition to sear ching the we b by speak ing, you can use V oice Actions to call your contacts, get directions , send message s, and perf orm a number of o ther common tasks . 1 On a Home scr een or when the keyb oard f or th e Browser's Omnibox is open, touch the Microphone icon at the upper right.
86 When confident that the tr anscription is accurat e, V oice Search d isplay s trans cribed wo rds as r egular tex t. Wor ds or phrases f or which it has p rov ided alternate transcri ptions ar e underlined.

90 Manage accounts Add or r emov e accounts Y ou can use multiple Google Accounts and Microsof t Ex change ActiveS ync accounts on your device . Y ou may also be able t o add other kinds o f accounts , depending on your apps. Some you can add in the Accoun ts & Sync screen, as described her e.
91 Add an account T o add some accounts, y ou may need to obtain details from syst em administrator about the service to which the account connects. F or example , you may need to know the account's domain or server addre ss. 1 Go to Settings > Personal > Acco unts & sync .
92 Remo ve an account Y ou can remove an account to delete it and all inform ation associated with it from your device , including email, contacts , settings, and so on. 1 Go to Settings > Perso nal > Accounts & sync . 2 T ouch the account to delete.
93 Configure account s ync options Y ou can configure synchronization options for an y of y our apps. Y ou can also configure what kinds o f data you s ynchroniz e for each account. Some ap ps , s uch as Gmail and C alendar , have separate synchroniz ation settings that pr ovide mor e fine-grained cont rol.
94 Configure general sync settings 1 Go to Settings > Perso nal > Accounts & sync . indicates that some or all of an account's information is configured to sync automatically . indicates that none of an account's inform ation is config ured to sync automatically .
95 Change an account's sync settings 1 Go to Settings > Personal > Acco unts & sync . 2 T ouch the account whose sync settings you want to change. The Sync Settings screen opens, di spla ying a list of t he kinds o f information the account can sync.
96 Change backup & reset options Y ou can back up settings and other da t a associated with one or mor e of y our Google Ac counts. If y ou need to replace o r factory reset your device, you can r estor e your data f or any account s that were previo usly backed up.
97 G Automatic resto re . Check this option to re store se ttings an d other da ta when you rei nstall an app. This feat ure r equires that y ou are backin g up your data with yo ur Google Account and that the app is using the backup service. G Factory data reset .
98 Secur e y our phone Set screen lock Depending how yo u use your phone , you ma y want to set some f orm of automatic scr een lock to pr event unauthoriz ed access . If a scr een lock has been set, the screen locks when y our phone's display goes to sleep.
99 Y ou can choose among these lock options, li sted in approximate or d er of strength: G Slide provides no pro tection, but lets you get to the Home scr een quickly , or open Came ra and start taking pictur es immediately . G Face Unlock lets you unlock your phone b y looking at it.
100 Encrypt y our phone Y ou can encrypt all the data on y our phone: Google A ccounts, application dat a, music and other media, downloaded information, and so on. If yo u do, y ou mu st ent er a numeric PIN or passwor d each time y ou turn on your phone.
101 Wh en yo u're rea dy to tur n o n en cr ypt ion : 1 F rom a Home or All Apps scre en, touch the Settings icon . 2 T ouch P ersonal > Securit y > Encryption > Encrypt ph one .
102 W ork with certificates Y ou can use digital certificates to identify y our devi ce f o r a variety of purposes, including VPN or Wi-Fi network access as well as authenti cation to servers by apps such as Email or Browser .
103 Install client and CA certificates T o install a certificate from your phone's internal storage: 1 Copy the cert ificat e or ke y stor e from your computer to the roo t of yo ur device 's internal s torage (t hat is, not in a f older). 2 F rom a Home or All Apps scre en, touch the Settings icon .
