Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards. Inser t the primar y SIM or USIM card into SIM card slot 1 ( 1 ) and the sec ondar y SIM or USIM card int o SIM card slot 2 ( 2 ). 1 2 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna.

Getting star ted 14 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 15 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 16 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.

Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → Unmount SD card .
Getting star ted 18 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 19 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
Getting star ted 20 S witching bet w een net w orks When you insert both SIM or USIM cards, y ou can use t wo diff erent subscriptions without the need to carr y two devices at the same time . Activate two cards and switch between them when making calls or sending messages.
21 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 27 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 28 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker). T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out.
Basics 29 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 30 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 31 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 32 • Smar t stay : Activate or deactivate the smart stay featur e. • Sync : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications. • Fligh t mode : Activate or deactivate fligh t mode. The av ailable options may vary depending on the region or ser vice pro vider .
Basics 33 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 34 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 35 Drag the widgets panel down t o expand it. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Rearranging panels Moving a panel Drag the widgets panel down, scr oll lef t or right, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 36 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 37 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 38 Help Ac cess help information t o lear n how to use the devic e and applications or configure impor tant settings. T ap Help on the Applications screen. Select an item to view tips . T o sort categories by an alphabetical order , tap . T o sear ch for keywor ds, tap .
Basics 39 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap → P or trait keyboard types , and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . On the 3x4 keyboard , a key has three or f our charac ters. T o enter a char acter , tap repeat edly the key corresponding to the char ac ter .
Basics 40 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone .
Basics 41 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 105) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 42 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 43 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 44 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 45 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 46 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
47 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap or . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 48 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 49 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 50 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or pr ess and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 51 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 52 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 53 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 54 Moving con tac ts Syncing with Google C ontac ts T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google . Contacts mov ed to Google Contacts appear with in the contacts list. Syncing with Samsung C ontac ts T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Samsung .

Communication 56 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 57 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 58 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 59 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter recipients , a subjec t, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 60 T alk Use this application to cha t with others via Google T alk. T ap T alk on the Applications screen. 62 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 63 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 64 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 65 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 66 Sending files Send files to other devices or upload them to w eb storage ser vices. Selec t your devic e, tap , select files, and then tap Done . Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , tap , selec t files, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
W eb & network 67 Group Pla y Use this application to shar e screens with multiple devices. Cr eate or join a Group Pla y session, and then share images , documents, or music . T ap Group Pla y on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
68 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 69 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 70 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 76) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 71 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 72 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and mo ve the camera in one direction. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 73 Recor ding mode T ap → to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 74 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap → to configur e settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are a vailable in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.
Media 75 • Review : Briefly display photos taken. • V olume key : Set the device to use the V olume button to con trol the shutter or z oom function. • T imer : Use this f or delayed-time shots . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range.
Media 76 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on how they are enc oded.
Media 77 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . Select a video to watch it and tap . T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video , and then tap . M ov e the star t bracket to the desir ed star ting point, mov e the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video.
Media 78 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and select Photo editor or P aper Ar tist . F av ourite images When viewing an image, tap → F av ourite to add the image to the fa vourites list. Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap .
Media 79 Using T ag Buddy T ap → Settings → T ag buddy , and then drag the T ag buddy switch to the right t o display a con textual tag (weather , location, date , and person ’ s name) when opening an image .
Media 80 V iewing stor y albums Selec t a story album. The cov er image appears on the first page. Scroll left or right to view images in the stor y album. When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • Add c ontent : Add mor e content to the curren t page.
Media 81 P aper Ar tist Use this application to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames . T ap P aper Ar tist on the Applications screen. Use ar tistic tools t o edit an image. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → P aper Pictures folder .
Media 82 Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Change screen ratio . Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Scan DLNA- enabled devices. Restar t the current video or skip to the previous video . T ap and hold to mov e backwards quickly .
Media 83 Y ou T ube Use this application to w atch videos fr om the Y ou T ube website . T ap Y ou T ube on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . W atching videos T ap , and then enter a keywor d.
Media 84 F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio . T o listen to the F M radio, y ou must connec t a headset, which ser ves as the radio an tenna. T ap FM Radio on the Applications screen. Listening to the F M radio Plug a headset into the devic e befor e launching the FM radio .
Media 85 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return to the F M radio screen.

88 Utilities S Memo Use this application to cr eate a memo using images and voice r ecordings. T ap S Memo on the Applications screen. C omposing memos Creat e memos with enr iched cont ent by dra wing sketches with your finger or adding images or voice memos .
Utilities 89 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type , line thick ness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap , and then tap to change the eraser size or tap Clear all to clear the memo . View mor e colours. Change the line thickness.
Utilities 90 T o cr eate a f older , tap → Crea te folder . T o mov e memos to another folder , tap → M ove . T o cop y memos, tap → Cop y . T o change the S Memo settings, tap → Settings . T o acc ess help information for S Memo , tap → Help .
Utilities 91 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 92 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others. A pinch gesture can be used to change calendar type . F or example, pinch to change fr om the monthly calendar to the y early calendar , and spread apar t to change yearly calendar back to monthly calendar .
Utilities 93 T o upload files to Dr opbox, tap → → Upload here → Photos or videos or Other files . T o open files in Dr opbox, select a file. While viewing images or videos, tap to add it to the fav our ites list. T o open files in the fav ourites list, tap .
Utilities 94 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 95 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the large cir cle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 96 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .
Utilities 97 V oic e R ec order Use this application to r ecord or play v oice memos. T ap V oice Recor der on the Applications screen. Recor ding voice memos T ap to start recording . Speak into the microphone at the bott om of the device. T ap to pause recording .
Utilities 98 Managing v oice memos In the list of voice memos, tap and select one of the following: • Share via : Selec t voic e memos to send, and then select a sharing method. • Delete : Selec t voic e memos to delete . • Settings : Change the voice r ecorder settings.
Utilities 99 Tips f or better voice r ecognition • Speak clearly . • Speak in quiet places. • Do not use offensiv e or slang wor ds. • A void speaking in dialec tal accen ts. 105 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. C onnec tions Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 106 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available .
