Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your Sams ung SCH-R311 phone by activating yo ur service, setting up your Voicemail, or getting an unders tanding of how this manual is put together .
5 Installing the Battery Note: Y our phone comes packaged with a partially charged rechargeable standard Li-Ion battery and tra vel adapter . Important!: Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery the first time you use your phone, otherwise you could damage the batter y .
Getting Started 6 3. Lift the botto m of the battery up (1) and away (2) from the phone. Char ging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rec har geable standard Li-Ion ba ttery. Only use Samsung-approved ch arging devices and batteries. Samsung accessories are designed to maximize battery life.
7 Low Batter y In dicator The battery indica tor ( ) in the upper-right corn er of the display indicates powe r level. Monito r the battery strength and ensure your battery is adequa tely charged. Three bars ( ) indicate a full charge. An empty batter y icon ( ) indic ates a near empt y batter y .
Getting Started 8 2. Press and hold for two or more seconds. Y our phone powers off. Note: If your phone is on and you press for less than one second, the phone will not power off.
9 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines some key features of your phone. It also describes the screen format and th e icons that will be di splayed when the phone is in use. 11 2. Navigatio n Key — In Menu mode, lets you scroll through the phone menu options. In St andby mode, let s you access preset functions and one user-defined function. 3. Left Soft Key — Used to navigate through menus and applications and to select the choice indica ted at the bottom left corner of the Main LCD.
Understanding Y our Phone 12 Left Soft Key Some functions of the Left soft key ( ) are as follows: • In standby mode, press the Msgs soft key ( ) to launch the Messages menu. • When the Left soft key function is Edit, press the Edit soft key ( ) to edit a Contacts entry .
13 Navigation Key Use the directi onal keys on the Navigation ke y ( ) to browse menus, sub-menus, and li sts. Each directional key also acts as a shortcut to launc h applications. Camera K ey Use the Camera key ( ) on the right side of the phone to activate the camera built into your phone and to take pictures.

Tip: Y ou can also enter the Vol u me > Voice Calls sub-menu by pressing Menu ➔ Sounds ➔ Vol u me ➔ Voice Calls . Use the Volume key on the left side of your phone to adjust the ringer volume setting.

17 Lock Mode When the phone is in Lock Mode , restrictions are placed on phone use. Y ou can receive calls and messag es, but cann ot place outgoing calls (except for emer gency number s) unt il you unlock the phone. Lock Mode also rest ricts access to menus and the Volume key .

This se ction also inc ludes the features and funct ionality associated with making or answering calls. Making a Call — Number Entr y Dialing 1. With the phone on, enter the nu mber you wish to call using the keypad.
19 Call Another Countr y — Shor tcut Method 1. In standby mode, press and hold until a plus sign ( + ) appears in the displa y . Note: When you press , your phone automatically replaces this + with 011, the three-digit exit code for the United States.
Call Functions 20 Note: If you select 2-Sec Pause , P appears in the display . If you select Wa it , W appears in the display . 5. Press to call the number . Making a Call — Speed Dialing Y ou can store phone num bers and contact name s in your phone’ s Contacts list.
21 Making a Call — Quick Searc h Dialing Use the Quick Search feature to dial an y number stored in your Contacts list by pressing the number ke ys that correspond to the first few letters of a Conta ct name. (For more information, refer to “Quick Search” on page 112.
Call Functions 22 3. Speak cl early and say the name o f a person in your Contacts list, first name followed by last name. If the name is recognized, Vo ice Dial repeat s the name and dials the number .

25 Note: In cases where there is a Contacts match for a Calls log entry, the name associated with the number a ppears in the display instead of the number . Outgoing Ca lls Y our phone retains information ab out the last 90 outgoing c alls and stores them in the Outgoing ca lls log.
Call Functions 26 Incoming calls appear s in the display . 2. Highlight a call, then press OPEN ( ) to view the Name of the caller (if i n the Contacts list), the or iginating number , the time and date the call was received, and the duration of the call (in mi nutes and seconds).

Call Functions 28 1. At the Calls menu, select Data Calls . A list of your data calls appears in the display . 2. Highlight a data call, then press OPEN ( ) to view further informatio n about the call.
29 Data Coun ter View the amount of T ran smit data, Re ceive data, a nd T ot al data transmitted or recei ved since the last time yo u reset the dat a counters, and the Lifetime amo unt of data transmitted or received. Note: Data Counter is not for billing purposes.
Call Functions 30 • Home Onl y — Y our phone is available for normal operation only in the designated coverage area. • Automatic — Y our Wireless Carrier’ s Preferred Roaming List (PRL) of networks is used to acquire service. If no preferred networks a re found, any digital system is acquired.
31 Section 4: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the men u navi gation for your phone. It also includes an outline of all the a vailable menus associa ted with your phone. Menu Naviga tion Access the menus and sub menus in your phone using the navigation key ( ) and soft keys ( ), or use a shortcut.
Menu Navigation 32 Naviga te Using a Shor tcut Y ou can also access menus and sub menus using menu numbers. After pressing Menu ( ), pre ss the menu n umber to go directly to the menu or sub menu of your choice. Before you can navigate using a shortcut, yo u’ll need the menu or sub-menu number that you wish to access.
33 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters using the phone keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entr y system to reduce the number of key str okes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 34 Using T9 ® Mode T9 Word recognizes commonly u sed words for the numeric sequence of key presses and inserts the word into your message. T9 Word is muc h faster than the trad itional method of text ent r y (Abc) and require s only one key press per letter of the word that you’re spelling.
35 2. Enter numbers while in 123 mode by pressing the key labeled with the corresponding number that you wish to insert into your message. Enterin g Symbols Enter symbols such as “@” or “%” into a text message. 1. While composing a text message, press th e Left soft key, then select Symbols .
Understanding Y our Contacts 36 Section 6: Understanding Y our Contacts This section details how you can ma nage your daily contacts by storing their names and numbers in your Contacts list. Y ou can have your Contacts en tries sorted by name. Contac ts Up to 500 entries can be stored in Contacts .
37 Finding a Contacts Entr y Shortcut Key Metho d If you’ve stored a name entr y in Contact s, Find allows you to find it quickly by enterin g the first few letters of a Contact ’ s name.
Understanding Y our Contacts 38 T o look up information for a specific contact: 1. In standby mode, press and hold to launch VoiceSi gnal. “ Say a Command ” appears in the display and is pronounced through the speaker . 2. Say “ Lookup ”. VoiceSignal prom pts you to “ Say the name.
39 Example: T o search for “Sally” you would enter 725 . 2. Press the Up navigation key. A list of Contact names that begin with letters correspondi ng to the number keys you pressed appears in the display . 3. Highlight the searched for Contact. • T o call the Contact, press .

Understanding Y our Contacts 42 Edit an Exist ing Email Addr ess 1. Find the Contacts entry you want to edit. (For more information, refer to “F inding a Contacts Entry” on page 37.) 2. Highlight the desired Contac ts entry , then press the Edit soft key .
43 1. Press to end your call. The call time, length of call, phone number , and name of the part y (if avai lable) appea r in the display . 2. Press the Save soft key . 45 5. Press SET ( ). Y ou are prompted to confirm your Speed Dial number assignment. 6. Press the Ye s soft key to save your Spee d Dial assignment and return to the Add New Entry screen. Note: Press the No soft key to discard the assignment and return to the Speed Dial screen.

47 • Fa mily • Friends 2. Highlight a Group, then press the Options soft key . The following options popup in the display: • Send Txt Msg — Send a text message to the select ed Group. • Send Pic Msg — Send a pictur e message to the selected Group.
Understanding Y our Contacts 48 Rename a Group The Rename option lets you cha nge the name any of the Groups, except No Group. 1. In standby mode, press Menu ( ), then select Contacts ➔ Group . The Group List screen appears in the display . 2. Highlight the Group name othe r than No Group that you wish to change, then press Options ➔ Rename .
49 2. Highlight the desire d en tr y , press the Options soft key , then select Erase . The phone prompts you to confirm the erasure. 3. T o confirm erasure of the s e lected Contact, press the Ye s soft key . T o retain the Contact, press the No soft key.
Messaging 50 Section 7: Messaging This section explains ho w to send or receive different types of messages. This section also describes the features and function ality associa t ed with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone is able to send and receive T ext messages to compatible phones and devices.

Messaging 56 9. Press to send the message. “ Pic Msg Sending ” appears in the display and a progress bar indicates the send status. Receive Pict ur e Mes sage s When you receive a Picture Message in standby mode, the ringer sounds (unless turned off) and New Message appears in the display along with the closed enve lope icon ( ).

easyedgeSM 66 Finding and Downloadin g A pplications 1. In standby mode, tap the Menu soft key , then select easyedge . The easy edge SM screen appears in the display with the easy edge SM shop tab showing. 2. Follow the prompts to l ocate , purchase (when required), and download an a pplicat ion, ringtone, or ot her multimedia files.

Camera 76 – 5 Manual — Lets you take 5 photos in quick succession by pressing TA K E ( ) for each photo. • When you select Divided Shot , the follow ing options appear in the display: – Off – 4 Auto — Lets you take 4 shots automatically that are combined into a single, mosaic photo, all w ith one press of TA K E () .
77 Camera Screen Layout When you activate your phone’ s cam era, the top two lines of the display are reserved for camera icons (when active). The ce nter of the display sho ws a viewfinder ima ge of the subject at which th e camera is pointed.
Camera 78 White Balance — Indicates camera’ s white balance setting. (Y ou can change the camera white balance setting. For more info rmation, refer to “ White Balance” on page 8 0.) Photo Limit — Indicates the available number of photos you can take.
79 2. Select a sub-menu , then select a preferred valu e. The following sub-sections de scribe camera options and available valu es. Shot Type Shot T ype lets you take multiple photos or shots in succession at the touch of a key and/or add co lorful fram es to your photos.

In standby mode, press Menu ( ), then select Multimedia . The following sub-me nus appear in the display: • Camera — Lets you l aunch and set up your phone’s camera.

Multimedia 88 – Send — Lets you send the s elected sound file to a specified recip ient in a Picture message. – Set As — Lets you assign th e selected sound file as the Ringtone or as the Contact ID for a Contact or an Alert T one for T ext, Picture, or Voicem ail messages.
89 Record a V oice Memo 1. At the Multimedia menu, select My Sounds ➔ Record New . T he Record New screen appears in the display . Tip: Y ou can also set your phone to record a Voice Memo while in a call. This lets you record the phone call. (For more information, refer to “The In-Use Options Menu” on page 23.

91 Section 13: T ools This section explains how to use your phone’ s digital assistant functionality t o schedule ev ents, set reminders, perform calculations, and more. T ools Menu T ools is a suit e of Personal Informatio n Mana ger (PIM) applications such as a Calendar , an d Memo Pad that run on your phone.

93 V oice-Activating Y our Cont acts List When you first start VoiceSignal, it reads your Contacts list and voice-activ ates all the names stor ed there. When you ha ve add or change contacts, VoiceSignal automa tically reloads and v oice- activate s the entire list .
T ools 94 Note: After you adapt Digit Dial, your phone is customized to your voice, and your voice only . Others will not be able to use it unless they reset the Digit Dialing to factory defaults. (For more information, refer to “Reset Digits” on page 95.
95 Reset Digits T o reset digit dialing to factory de fault settings, do the f ollowing: 1. At the Voice SVC sub-menu, select V oice Settings ➔ Digit Dialing ➔ Reset Digits . The phone prompts you to confirm di git reset. 2. T o reset your digit ada ptation, press the OK soft key.
T ools 96 Memo P ad Y ou can create a notes and store them in Memo Pad. Y ou can’t prioritize or set an alert for stored notes. Return to Memo Pad anytime you wish to review and edit your notes. Add a Memo 1. At the T ools menu, select Memo Pad . If you have any stored memos, they appear as a list in the display .
97 2. Select an Alarm. A Set Ala rm screen appears in the displ ay containing the following options: • Alarm • Time • Frequency • Ringer 3. Highlight the options you wish to change, then select values f or the options using the Left and Right navigation keys.
