Getting star ted 7 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the voice sear ch or take videos. • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 9 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Slide the latch and open the flap .
Getting star ted 10 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . 4 Inser t the batter y . Make sure to pr operly align the battery ’ s gold-coloured con tacts when inser ting the battery . 5 Replace the flap and slide the latch.
Getting star ted 11 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Slide the latch and open the flap . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 12 Char ging the ba tter y Charge the batt er y befor e using it for the first time . Use the charger to charge the batt er y . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 13 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket. Do not remov e the batter y before r emoving the charger . This may damage the device .
Getting star ted 14 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 15 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card → OK . 1 Slide the latch and open the flap . 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 16 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
17 C amera Basic func tions Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e. (p . 66) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. The device aut omatically shuts off when unused. Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission.
Camera 18 T ak ing videos T ap to take a video. T o stop r ecording, tap . • T ouch f ocus is not available in video mode. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution. • When using a memor y card with a slo w writing speed, the device ma y not be able to sav e the video properly .
Camera 19 Zooming in and out T ur n the Zoom butt on lef t or right to zoom in or out. Zoom out Zoom in • The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution. • The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting a video .
Camera 20 Reducing device shak e Use the Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) option to r educe or eliminate blurriness from device shake. T ap → Exper t → A / S / M / P , and then from the pr eview screen, tap → Camer a → OIS (anti-shake) to help f ocus when the device is moving .
Camera 21 Learning ic ons The icons displa yed on the shooting scr een provide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are the most c ommon.
Camera 22 T ips for taking clearer photos Holding the device c orrec tly Make sure not to block the scr een, lens, flash, or micr ophone. Make sure not to expose the lens t o direct sunlight. This ma y discolour the image sensor , or cause it to malfunction.
Camera 23 Half-pressing the Shutt er button Pr ess the Shutter button halfway do wn to adjust the focus . The device adjusts the focus automatically , and the focus frame turns gr een. The f ocus frame turns red if not f ocused. Reducing device shak e Set the Optical Image Stabilizer to reduce devic e shake optically .
Camera 24 Keeping the subject in focus F ocusing on the subjec t may be difficult in the f ollowing conditions: • When the contr ast between the subject and background is low . F or example, the subject is wearing clothing that is similar in colour t o the background.
Camera 25 When taking photos in low-ligh t conditions • T ur n the flash on to take photos in lo w-light conditions. (p . 37) • Set ISO sensitivity options. (p . 38) When subjects are moving r apidly Use the continuous shooting option t o take photos of moving subjects.
Camera 26 A dvanced functions Changing C amera settings T ap to quickly change Camera settings. The available options vary by mode. • : Configur e Camera settings . • : Activate or deactivate the v oice control to take phot os. • : Activate or deactivate the flash.
Camera 27 Smar t Use this to take phot os with predefined settings f or various scenes. Beauty face Use this to take phot os with lightened faces f or gentler images. T ap → Smar t → Beauty face . Pr ess the Shutter button to take a photo , and the device automatically adjusts the phot o , and then sav es it.
Camera 28 Best face Use this to take multiple g roup shots at the same time and combine them t o create the best possible image. T ap → Smar t → Best face . Pr ess the Shutter button to take multiple photos . T o get the best shot, hold the device steady and remain still while taking photos.
Camera 29 Macro Use this to take phot os of ver y close subjects. T ap → Smar t → Macro . Pr ess the Shutter button to take a close -up photo . • Hold the device steadily t o preven t blurr y photos. • T ur n off the flash if the distance to the subject is too close .
Camera 30 Rich tone Use this to take phot os without losing details in bright and dark areas. The device automatically takes sev eral photos with various exposur e values, and then merges them into one photo . T ap → Smar t → Rich tone . While holding the device steadily , press the Shutter button t o take multiple photos.
Camera 31 P anorama Use this to take wide panoramic phot os. T ap → Smar t → P anorama . Pr ess the Shutter button to take a photo , and then move the devic e in any dir ection. When the blue frame aligns with the pr eview screen, the device aut omatically takes another shot in the panoramic sequence .
Camera 32 • In Panor ama mode, the z oom function is disabled. If the lens is zoomed in when selecting this mode, the device automatically z ooms out to default position. • In Panor ama mode, some devic e options are not av ailable. • The device ma y stop taking photos due to composition or mov ement within the scene .
Camera 33 Night Use this to take phot os in low-light c onditions, without using the flash. T ap → Smar t → Night . While holding the device steadily , press the Shutter button t o take multiple photos. Photos are automa tically merged into a single phot o.
Camera 34 Exper t Use this to take phot os and videos with manual adjustment of ISO sensitivity , exposure value , aper ture , and the shutter speed. Return to the previous screen. Change the ISO sensitivity . Display descriptions of modes and functions.
Camera 35 Using the aperture priority mode Use this to manually set the aperture value to take photos . Shutter speed is set automatically . T ap → Exper t → A , and set aper ture , ISO sensitivit y , and exposure value . Using the shutt er speed priority mode Use this to manually set the shutt er speed to take photos .
Camera 36 Shooting options Cust omise the device to take unique photos or videos . The available options vary by mode. Selec ting resolutions Selec t a higher resolution t o increase the pix els the photo or video can include. Selecting a higher resolution also incr eases the file size .
Camera 37 T ak ing photos in lo w-light conditions Pr eventing r ed- eye in por trait phot os When using the flash when taking a por trait photo in low-light c onditions, a r ed-glow may appear in the subject ’ s eyes . In Camera mode, tap → Camer a → Flash , and select Red- ey e or Red- ey e fix to prev ent red-eye.
Camera 38 A djusting the ISO sensitivity The ISO sensitivity is the measure of a film ’ s sensitivity to light as defined b y the International Organisation f or Standardisation (ISO). Select a higher resolution to take better phot os and reduce blurriness when taking photos in low-light c onditions without using the flash.
Camera 39 Detecting faces The device aut omatically detects multiple human faces. In Camera mode, tap → Camer a → F ace det ec tion → Normal . Aim the device at a human subject. When the device detects a human face , a white frame appears around the face .
Camera 40 Detecting eye blinking If the device detects closed eyes, it automa tically takes more photos in suc cession. In Camera mode, tap → Camer a → F ace det ec tion → Blink detection . Aim the device at a human subject. When the device detects a human face , a white frame appears around the face .
Camera 41 Changing met ering methods The metering mode r efers to the method the devic e measures the quantity of light. The brightness and lighting of the photos ma y var y depending on the selected metering method. In Camera mode, tap → Camer a → Metering , and select a metering method.
Camera 42 T ak ing photos c ontinuously Use the continuous shooting option t o take photos of fast moving subjects, such as moving cars or gestures of subjects. In Camera mode, tap → Camer a → Drive and select an option. • Single shot : Use this to take a single phot o .
Camera 43 T ak ing photos or videos with filt er effec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. Not all of the following options ar e available in both Camera and Camcor der modes. The available options v ar y by mode.
Camera 44 C onfiguring settings for C amera T ap → to configur e settings for Camera. The available options vary by mode. • Photo size : Selec t a resolution f or photos. Use higher r esolution for higher quality . H igher resolution photos take up mor e memor y .
Camera 45 • V oice con trol : Activate or deactivate the v oice control to take phot os. • AF lamp : Use this to activate the AF-assist light in lo w-light conditions. • P ower-on mode : Selec t the default camera mode that launches when the devic e is turned on.
Camera 46 Cleaning the devic e Use a blow er brush to remove dust , and then wipe the lens gently with a soft cloth. I f an y dust remains , apply lens cleaning liquid to a lens cleaning paper , and wipe gently . Do not press on the lens co ver , or use a blower brush on the lens c over .
47 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 48 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 49 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 50 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 51 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 52 Sw eeping Sw eep a palm across the screen t o capture a screenshot. The image is saved in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 53 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 54 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 55 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 56 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the bottom of the Home screen.
Basics 57 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 58 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, drag it to Crea te folder , and then enter a f older name. P ut applications into the new folder b y dragging, and then tap S ave to sav e the arrangement.
Basics 59 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the Google v oice input to ent er text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 60 Entering t ex t by v oice When Google voice typing is activated, the v oice rec ognition screen appears. Speak a te xt into the micr ophone. When you are done , tap to return t o the text. T o change the te xt, tap the underlined and selec t a word or phr ase among the dropdowns .
Basics 61 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap S ave .
Basics 62 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware.
Basics 63 C onnec t as a media device Connect the device to a comput er and access media files stored on y our device . 1 Connect the device to a comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) .
Basics 64 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es a preset patt ern, PIN, or password whenev er unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 65 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on, and enter the patt ern, PIN, or password . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
66 Media Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on how they are enc oded.
Media 67 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • Edit : Edit the image. • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • F av ourites : Add t o the favourites list . • F ace tag : Register faces in phot os as face tags.
Media 68 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap . Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap to send them to others.
Media 69 P aper Ar tist Use this application to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames . T ap P aper Ar tist on the Applications screen. Use ar tistic tools t o edit an image. The edited image is sav ed in Galler y → P aper Pictures folder .
Media 70 Photo W izard Use this application to embellish images b y applying various effects, such as the pop ar t effect. T ap Photo W izard on the Applications screen. Undo and redo the last action. Save changes . Apply effects to the image . Make multi-grid image.
Media 71 Changing c olours T ap Colour , select one of the colour effects that appear at the bottom of the screen, dr ag the slider to left or right if required , and then tap Done .
Media 72 V ideo Pla yer Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo Player on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device's software. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on how they are enc oded.

Communication 82 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a message thread t o view the person ’ s message. Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen.
Communication 83 Sending scheduled messages T ap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 84 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 85 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to manually retriev e new messages. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 86 Swit ching bet w een chats T o switch between cha ts, scr oll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete chat history , tap → Clear chat history . ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e that has a mobile phone number .

Utilities 99 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to y our Dropbox f older , your device automa tically sync with the web ser ver and any other c omputers that hav e Dropbox installed .
Utilities 100 Alarm Setting alarms T ap Crea te alarm , set a time for the alarm to go off , selec t days f or the alar m to r epeat, and then tap S ave . • Snooze : Set an inter val and the number of times f or the alarm to repeat after the pr eset time.
