3 Getting Started What is the DSS System? Y ou’ve pur chased the DSS™ Digital Satellite System, so you alr eady know a lot of the gr eat things it of fers. Y ou know that the DSS system uses the latest satellite technology to deliver television pr ogramming to your home.
4 Using This Manual Using this Manual The purpose of this User’s Manual is to give you the infor mation you’ll need to begin using the DSS system. The manual is divided into two parts: Section 1: .
5 The Only Rule: Point and Select The Only Rule: Point and Select Y ou only need to know one rule to use the DSS system: Point and Select. Once you master this rule, you can use any part of the Pr ogram Guide or the menu system. What is Point and Select? The Point and Select method has two steps.
6 Using the Program Guide Using the Pr ogram Guide The Pr ogram Guide is designed to help you select r egular pr ograms and pay-per -view events by listing all the pr ograms and pr ogram times that ar e available to you.
7 Using the Program Guide Exiting fr om the Program Guide Ther e ar e three ways to exit fr om the Pr ogram Guide: • Point to the Exit button on the bottom of the Pr ogram Guide and pr ess SELECT or • Point to a channel and pr ess SELECT or • Pr ess CLEAR on the r emote.
8 Using the Program Guide Sor ting the Pr ogram Guide Ther e ar e six on-scr een choices—called “buttons”— at the bottom of the Pr ogram Guide: ▼ (down arr ow), Movies, Sports, Other , All, and Exit. The down arr ow and the Exit button allow you to see other parts of the guide or r emove the guide fr om the scr een.
9 Movies Button Simplifies your Pr ogram Guide to list movies only. After selecting Movies, point to the Theme button that appears and pr ess SELECT to sort the Pr ogram Guide to list specific types of movies, such as comedies or thrillers. Sports Button Simplifies your Pr ogram guide to list sporting events only.
10 Using the Menu System Using the Menu System Ther e ar e two parts to the menu system: menus and display scr eens. Menus Menus ar e lists of choices. The first menu is called the Main menu. T o bring up the Main menu, pr ess MENU on the r emote. Ther e ar e two ways to make a choice in a menu: • Point to the choice and pr ess SELECT .
Using the Menu System Example 2: T o choose Help fr om the Main menu using number keys: 1. Pr ess MENU on the r emote to bring up the Main menu. 2. Pr ess 6 on the r emote. The Help menu scr een comes up. Display Scr eens As you can see from the pr evious examples, some menu choices bring up other menus.
12 Using the Menu System 4. Point to Channel Limits and Lists and pr ess SELECT . The Channel Limits and Lists display scr een comes up. 5. Point to a check box on the display scr een. 6. Pr ess SELECT to add the channel to the channel list. 7. Pr ess SELECT again to r emove the channel fr om the list.
13 Using the Menu System OK Exit Help Commonly Used Push Buttons Y ou will find on most display scr eens one or mor e “push” buttons that allow you to save your changes, leave the scr een, or get Help information. OK Buttons Y ou’ll see an OK button in many of the display scr eens.
14 Using On-line Help Using On-line Help On-line Help is available for all of the menus and display scr eens. The DSS System pr ovides thr ee types of Help: Auto Help, Help buttons, and Menu Help. Auto Help Most menus contain a short description of the menu you ar e using.
15 Using On-line Help Menu Help Select Help fr om the Main menu to choose from a list of on-line Help topics. Then, use your r emote contr ol to find out about the specific parts of the DSS system. Point to Remote Control and pr ess SELECT to see an on-scr een display of the r emote contr ol.

17 Major Features Using the Program Guide for PPV Pr ograms The Pr ogram Details scr een comes up if you point to a PPV pr ogram in the Pr ogram Guide and pr ess SELECT . Using the Attractions Menu for PPV Pr ograms Y our pr ogram pr oviders may offer futur e pr ogramming events not curr ently listed in your Pr ogram Guide.
18 Major Features Reviewing PPV Purchases The Past Pur chases display scr een, which is accessed thr ough the Options menu, allows you to review the pr ograms that • you have pur chased • have been br oadcast • have not yet been billed to your account.
19 Major Features How to tell when you have mail: Ther e ar e two ways to tell if you have mail, depending on whether the DSS r eceiver is tur ned on or of f. • If the DSS r eceiver is tur ned on , a mail icon appears in the channel marker . • If the DSS r eceiver is tur ned of f , the power light on the fr ont panel of the r eceiver flashes.
20 Major Features Mailbox Size The DSS mailbox has enough memory to stor e ten (10) forty character messages. Y ou should periodically review and erase your mail messages to pr event any mail messages fr om being erased by the DSS system when memory runs low.
21 Major Features indicates that the channel will be included in your channel list. The Par ent-appr oved list, which is actually a channel limit, allows you to select the channels that can be viewed when the system is locked. A channel with a check mark in this column can be viewed at any time, whether the system is locked or unlocked.
22 Major Features Choosing Y our Channel List Ther e ar e two ways to choose the channel list that you want to use: 1. Pr ess the F A V (Favorite Channel List) Button or 2. Bring up the Select Channel List display scr een (accessed thr ough the Options menu).
23 Major Features 4. Point to the list you wish to use and pr ess SELECT . 5. Point to OK and pr ess SELECT . This list becomes the list that is in ef fect until you change the list again or tur n the DSS r eceiver of f. The Nor mal list is in ef fect each time you turn on the DSS r eceiver .
24 Major Features Setting the Ratings Limit The Ratings Limit display scr een allows you to set a maximum viewing limit for rated pr ograms, so long as the pr ogram pr ovider has transmitted the pr oper code. This featur e can be used to pr event certain rated programs fr om being viewed.

26 Major Features Unlocking the System The Unlock System display screen—which is available only when the system is locked—allows you to unlock the system. Unlocking the system tur ns of f any ratings, spending, or channel limits you have set. Y ou must r e-lock your system to enfor ce your limits again (the limits stay the same).
27 Major Features Session Unlock If you override a limit when the system is locked, the system enters Session Unlock, meaning that the system is only unlocked fr om the time you override the limit until the r eceiver is tur ned of f. NO ratings, spending or channel limits ar e enfor ced until you tur n the r eceiver of f and on again.

The DSS system will then automatically set the audio pr ogram to the selected audio pr ogram type, when that type is available. Other Featur es The following paragraphs describe several DSS system featur es, but don’t pr ovide step-by-step instructions.
29 Other Features it is available if you need mor e infor mation. Picture Size The Pictur e size display scr een allows you to choose between a standar d TV scr een and a Cinema option. A standar d TV scr een has an aspect ratio of 4:3; the Cinema option has an aspect ratio of 16:9.
30 Parts of the System Par ts of the DSS System One way to understand the DSS system is to look at the dif fer ent parts of the system—fr om the studio down to the DSS receiver and r emote control i n your living r oom. Uplink Center Transmits programming up to the satellite.
DSS Satellite Dish Picks up the satellite’s coded program information and relays it to your DSS receiver. (Your satellite dish may be installed in different locations on or around your house. The satellite dish must, however, be pointed in a southern direction toward the satellite.
32 3/4 SWITCH If you use the OUT TO TV jack to connect your DSS receiver to the TV, set the switch to 3 view the programming on TV channel 3. Set the switch to 4 to show the programming on channel 4. IN FROM ANT Used to connect a normal television antenna or cable service to your DSS receiver.
33 Parts of the System ON/OFF MESSAGE TV/DSS MENU SELECT/DISPLAY Caution: Do not stack electronic components or other objects on top of the receiver. The slots on top of the receiver must be left uncovered to allow proper airflow to the unit.
ARROWS Used to point to different items in the Program Guide or menu system. SELECT/DISPLAY Selects items in the Program Guide and the menu system. When viewing a program, SELECT/DISPLAY brings up a channel marker providing detailed program information.
35 MENU Brings up the Main menu. If you are already in a menu, pressing MENU has the same effect as pressing SELECT. If you are in the Program Guide, press MENU to bring up the Select Guide display screen which allows you to choose one of the available special guides offered by your program providers.
36 Setting Up the Remote Setting up the Remote The DSS remote can be pr ogrammed to contr ol most brands of r emote contr ollable TVs. Most RCA, GE and ProScan TVs ar e alr eady programmed.
