3 Read This Before Installation We have designed your Tel ephone Answering Device (TAD) to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. Ho wever, each device, such as a telephone or answering machine, that you co nnect to the telephone line draws power from the telephone line.
4 Read This Before Installation THE FCC W ANTS YO U T O KNOW In the unlikely event that your phone causes problems on the phone line, the phone company can temporari ly discontinue your service. If this happens, th e phone company attempts to notify you in advance.

6 Features ˆ Features Your RadioShack Digital Answering Syste m TAD 3809 stores all your messages on a comp uter chip — there are no tape mechanisms to wear out a nd no tapes to bother wi th. This g ives you capabilities not available in tap e-based answering ma- chines.
7 Installation Toll Saver — gives you time to h ang up before the TAD an- swers to avoid charges when you call by lon g-distance to check your messages. Room Monitor — lets you listen from a remote phone to the room where your TAD is lo cated. Digital Outgoing Message — gives you a clear outgo ing mes- sage up to 60 seco nds long.
8 Installation INSTALLING THE BACKUP BATTERY The TAD requires AC powe r to operate. If AC power fail s, or you unplug the TAD, a 9-volt battery (not supplied) provides backup power so the TAD can maintain the correct time and memory information. For the best performa nce and longest life, we recommend a RadioShack alkaline battery.
9 Installation CONNECTING THE T AD Follow these steps to connect your TAD to the telephone line and phone. 1. Unplug the telephone’s modular cord from its line jack and plug it into the TO L IN E jack on the bottom of the T AD. 2. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord i nto the TO PHONE jack on the bott om of the T AD.
10 Preparation Cautions: Y ou must us e a Class 2 power source that sup- plies 9V AC and delivers at least 440 mA. Its plu g must fit the T AD's AC 9V 440 mA jack. The sup- plied adapter me ets th ese specifi cations. Using a n adapter that does not meet these specifica tions could damage th e T AD or th e adapter .
11 Preparation 1. Hold down SET until the T AD beeps. The T AD announces, “Sunday ,” and 34 34 34 34 appea rs. Note: If necessary , slide VOLUME on the right side of the T AD to the desire d listenin g level.
12 Preparation answers a call. The maximum outgoing message length is 60 seconds. Follow these steps to record the OGM. 1. Hold down AN NOUNCE . The T AD be eps, and 93 93 93 93 appears. Note: When the memory i s full, )/ )/ )/ )/ appears and the T AD announces, “Memory is full.
13 Preparation SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS The ring select switch ( 4/7/TS ) controls how long the TAD waits before it answers a call. Slide the switch to the appropriate posi- tion. 4 — The TAD answers after four rings. 7 — The TAD answers after seven rings.
14 Operation ˆ Operation RECORDING INCOMING MESSAGES The TAD can record an incomi ng message of up to 180 sec- onds. If a recording reaches 17 5 seconds, the TAD beeps once to notify the caller that time will be up soon. If the incoming mes- sage reaches 180 seconds, the TAD beeps three times, then disconnects.
15 Operation there are new messages, the display’s indicator fl ashes until all the new messages have played. To play all the messages , press PLA Y/STOP . To play only the new messa ges , hold down PLA Y/STOP . The TAD announces the n umber of messages.
16 Operation Pausing Message Pl ayback To pause while listenin g to messages, press PLA Y/STOP . 3$ 3$ 3$ 3$ ap- pears. Wait at least 2 seconds, then press PLA Y/STOP again to resume playing messages.
17 Operation RECORDING A MEMO A memo is a message you can record on the TAD without hav- ing to call in on the phone. The maximum memo length is 60 seconds. Note: If the TAD’s memory is full ( )/ )/ )/ )/ appears), you must erase some messages before you can record a memo (see “Erasing Messages” on Page 16).

Changing the Remote Operation Security Code The TAD’s remote operation secu rity code is preset to 799.
19 Operation Notes: • Be sure to set each digit within 8 seconds of the last. Other- wise, the T AD exits setup and you must start again from Step 1. • We recommend you not use three identi cal digits (such as 999) for the security code . Such numbers are too easy for others to guess.
20 Operation If you have recorded an OGM , the T AD beeps and announces, “Answer on.” Note: Pushing # again (once a message has been recorded) sets the T AD to Answer-Off.
21 Operation Remote Commands After you press 4 or 5 to play messages, you can: Press T o 0 Stop playback, recording, and room monito ring. 1 Play a new outgoing message. 2 Record a new outgoing message (OGM). 3 Monitor the room where the T AD is located for 30 seconds.
22 Troubleshooting ˆ T roubleshooting We do not expect you to have any problems with your TAD Dig- ital Answering System, but i f you do, the following suggestions might help. Problem Suggestion The incoming mes- sage is incompl ete. Be sure the T AD’s memory is not full.
23 Troubleshooting CARE Keep the TAD dry; if it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Use and store the TAD only in normal temperature environments. Handle the TAD carefully; do not drop it. Keep th e TAD away from dust and dirt, an d wipe it with a damp cloth occasionall y to keep it looking new.
