7 Safety Warnings 1. The NAS can oper ate normally in the temper ature of 0ºC –40ºC and relative humidity of 0%–95%. Please make sure the environment is well- ventilated. 2. The power cord and devices connected to the NAS must pro vide correct supply voltage (100W , 90–264V).
8 Chapter 1 Install the NAS For the information of the hardw are inst allation, please refer to the “Quick Installation Guide” in the product package. 1.1 Hard Disk Compatibility List This product works with 2.5- inch/ 3.5-inch S A T A hard disk drives from major hard disk brands.

12 Chapter 2 Use the Powerful Services of NAS A. Use the network shar es 1. Y ou can access the network shares of the NAS by the following means: a. Open My Network Places and find the workgroup of the NAS . If you cannot find the server , browse the whole netw ork to se arch for the NAS .
13 B. Manage the NAS Manage the NAS by the web browser on Windo ws or Mac 1. Y ou can access the web administr ation page of the NA S by the fol lowing methods: a. Use Finder to find the NAS. b. Open a web browser and enter http:// NAS IP :8080 The default NAS IP is 1 69.
14 3. Y ou can browse the NAS UI by the Standard view or the Flow view . Standard view: Flow view:.
15 4. Choose the display language on the drop -down menu on t he login page of the NAS or after you login the NAS. 5. The NAS supports SSL secure login which enables you to conf igure and manage the server by encrypted trans fer . T o use t his function, sele ct the option “S SL login” on the admi nistrati on page and login the server .
16 Chapter 3 Server Administration There are 8 main sections in the server administr ation. Click the triangl e icon next to the sect ion name to expand the tree and view the items listed under each section.
17 T o access the services such as W eb File Manager , Download Stat ion, Multimedia Station, and Surveillan ce Station, you can choose the services from the drop-d own menu or click the icons on the login page. After you login the NAS , you can click the icons on top of the page to access the services.
18 3.1 System Administration Y ou can configure the genera l system se ttings, network set tings, and hardw are settings, update the firmw are, etc. in this secti on.
19 3.1.1 General Settings 3.1.1.1 System Administration Enter the n ame of the NAS. The serv er name supports maximum 14 char acters long at maximum, whi ch can be a co mbination of the alphabets, numb ers, and hyphen (-). The server does not accept th e names with space, period (.
20 3.1.1.2 Date and Time Set the date, time, and time z one accordin g to your location. If the settings are incorrect, the follow ing problems may occur: When using a web browser to access the se rver or save a file, the display time of the action will be incorrect.
21 3.1.1.3 Daylight Saving Time If your region adopts d aylight sa ving time (DS T), you ca n enable “ Adjust system clock automatically f or daylight saving time” . Click “ Apply” . The latest DST schedule of the time zone you select in th e “Date and Time” section will be shown.
22 3.1.1.4 Language Select the language the NAS uses to display files and direct ories. Note: All the files and directories on th e NAS will be created using Unicode encoding.
23 3.1.2 Network 3.1.2.1 TCP/IP i. IP Address Y ou can configu re the TCP/IP settings of the NAS on this page. C lick the Edit button ( ) to edit the network s ettings. For the NAS which supports two LAN ports, you can connect both network interf aces to the same switch an d configure the TCP/IP settings.
24 On the TCP/IP Property page, co nfigure the following set tings: Network Speed Select the network tran sfer rate according to t he network envi ronment to which the NAS is connect ed. Select au to negotiation and th e NAS will adjust the transfer r ate automati cally .

After applying the settings, make s ure the network cables of the two Ethernet interfaces are connected to the corr ect switch and the switch has been configured to support the port tr unking mode selected on the NA S. R efer to the table below about the port trunking opti ons av ailable on the NA S.

29 iv. DNS Server Primary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of the primary DNS server . Secondary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of the secondary DNS server . Note: 1. Please contact your ISP or networ k ad ministr ator for the IP address of the primary and the secondary DNS serv ers.
30 3.1.2.2 DDNS T o set up a server on the Internet and en able the users to access it easily , a fixed and easy-to-remember host name is often required. However , if the ISP provides only dynamic IP address, the IP address of the server will change from time to time and is difficult t o recall.
31 3.1.2.3 IPv6 The NA S supports IPv6 connectivity with “stateless” address configur ations and RADVD (R outer Adverti sement Daemon) for IPv6, R FC 2461 to allow the hosts on the same subnet to acquire IPv6 addr esses from the NAS automatica lly .
32 T o u se this function, select the option “Enable IPv 6” and click “ Apply” . The NAS w ill restart. After the system restarts, login the IPv6 page again.
33 3.1.3 Hardware Y ou can enable or disable the ha rdware functions of the NA S. Enable configurat ion reset switch You can press the reset button for 3 seconds to reset the administrator password and the system se ttings to default.
34 Enable warning alert for redundant power supply on the web-based interface: If you have installed two power su pply units (PSU) on the NAS and connected them to the power sockets, both PSU wil l supply the power to the NAS (appl ied to 1U and 2U models).
35 3.1.4 Security 3.1.4.1 Security Level Enter the IP address or network from wh ich the connections to this server are allowed or rejected. When the connection of a host server is denied, all the protocols of that server are not allowed to access the local server .
36 3.1.4.2 Network Access Protection The networ k access protection enhances the security of the system and prevents unwanted i ntrusion. Y ou can select to block the IP for a certain period of ti me or forever if the IP fails to login th e server from a particular connection method.
37 3.1.4.3 Import SSL Secure Certificate The Secure Socket Layer (S SL) is a prot ocol for encrypted communication between web servers and browsers for secure data tr ansfer .
38 3.1.5 Notification 3.1.5.1 Configure SMTP Server The NAS supports email aler t to inform yo u about the system e rrors and warning. T o receive the alert by emai l, configure the SMTP server . SMTP Server: Enter t he SMTP serv er name, e.g. smtp.
39 3.1.5.2 Configure SMSC Server Y ou can configure the SMS server settings to send SMS messages fro m the NAS . The default SMS service provider is C lickatell. Y ou may also add your own SMS service provider by selecting “ Add SM S Provider” on the drop down menu.
40 3.1.5.3 Alert Notification Y ou can configure to receive instant SMS or email alert when a system error or warning occurs. Enter the email a ddress and mobile phone number to receive the alerts. Make sure you ha ve entered the corre ct SMTP server and the SMSC server settings.
41 3.1.6 Power Management This section enables you to restart or shut down the server immediately , define the behavior of the server when the powe r resum es after a power outage, and set schedule for automatic system power on/ off/ restart. Restart/ Shutdown R estart or shut down th e server immediately .

43 3.1.7 Network Recycle Bin This function enabl es the files deleted on the shares of the NAS to be remo ved to Network R ecycle Bin to reserve the files temporarily . T o enable this function , select the option “En able Network Recycle Bin” and click “ Apply” .
44 3.1.8 Backup/ Restore Settings To back up all the settings, includin g the user accounts, server name and network configurat ion etc., click “Backup” and select to open or save th e setting file. To restore all the settings, click “Browse” to select a previously saved setting file and click “ Restore”.
45 3.1.9 System Logs 3.1.9.1 System Event Logs The NAS can store 10,000 recent event logs, including w arning, error , and information messages. In case of syst em malfunction, the event logs can be retrieved to analyze the sy stem problems. Tip: Y ou can right click a log and delete th e record.
46 3.1.9.2 System Connection Logs The s ystem supports logging HT TP , FTP , T e ln et , SSH , A FP , NF S, SA MBA , a nd i SC SI connections. Click “Option s” to select the conn ection type to be logged. The file transfer performance can be slightly affected by enabling t he event logging.
47 3.1.9.3 On-line Users T he informat ion of the on-lin e users accessing the NAS via networking services is shown on this page. Tip: Y ou can right click a log and select to disconnect the IP connection and/or add the IP to the block li st. 3.1.9.4 Syslog S yslog is a standard fo r forwarding the log messages on an IP network.
48 3.1.10 Firmware Update Note: If the system is running properly , you do not need to update the fi rmware. Before updating the system firmware, mak e sure the product model a nd firmware version are correct. F ollow the steps below to update firmware: Step 1: Download the release notes of the fir mware from the QNAP websi te http://www.
49 Update the syst em firmware b y Finder Y ou can update the system firmw are by th e QNAP Finder . Select a NAS model and click “Update Firmware” from the “T ools” menu.
50 Browse and select the firmw are for the NA S. Click “Start” to update the system. Note: Y ou can use Finder to update all the se rvers of the same model on the same local network . Make sure you h ave admini strator access to all the servers you w ant to update.
51 3.1.11 Restore to Factory Default To reset all the settings to defa ult, cli ck “RESET”. Caution: When you pre ss “RESET” on this page, all the drive data, us er accounts, network shares, and system settings are cl eared and restored to default.
52 3.2 Disk Management 3.2.1 Volume Management This page shows the model, size, and current status of the disk on the NAS. Y ou can format and check di sk, and scan bad bl ocks on the disk.
53 Disk Configuration Applied NAS Models Single disk volume All models RAID 1, JBOD (just a bunch of di sks) 2-bay models or abo ve RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 5+hot spare 4-bay models or abov e RAID 6+hot s.
54 Single Disk Volume Each hard disk dri ve is used as a standalone disk. If a disk is damaged, all the data will be lost. JBOD (Just a bunch of disks ) JBOD is a collection of hard di sk drives that does not offer an y RAID protecti on. The data are written to the physi cal disks sequentially .
55 T o create a RAID 5 disk volume, a minimum of 3 hard disks are required. The storage capacity of a RAID 5 arr ay equals (N-1). N is the total number of drive members in the array . RAID 6 Disk Volume The data are striped across all the drives in a RAID 6 array .
56 3.2.2 RAID Management * This function does not apply to one-ba y model, and TS-210. Y ou can perform RAID capacity expansi on (RAID 1/ 5/ 6), RAID level migr ation (single disk/ RAID 1/ RAID 5) , or configure the spare drive (RAID 5/ 6) with the data retained.

61 3.2.3 HDD SMART This page enabl es the users to mon itor the hard dri ve health, tempera ture, and the usage status by the hard disk S .M.A.R.T . mechanism. Select the hard drive and you can view th e following information by clicking the corresponding buttons.
62 3.2.4 Encrypted File System This function is applicable to certain mode ls only . Please refer to the comparison table for more details: http://www .qnap .com/images/products /compa rison/Comparison_NAS.html You can manage the encrypted di sk volu mes on the NAS on this page.
63 3.2.5 iSCSI The NAS supports built-in iSCSI serv ice fo r server clustering and virtuali zed environments. Note: The NAS supports 8 iSCSI d evices at maximum. 3.2.5.1 iSCSI Target F ollow the steps below to conf igure th e iSCSI target serv ice on the NAS.
64 8. When the wizard is sh own, select to create an iSCSI target with a mapped LUN, an iSCSI target on ly , or an iSCSI LUN only . Click “Next” . 9.
65 10. Enter the target name and target alia s. Y ou may select the options “Data Digest” and/or “Header Digest” (optional) . These are the parameters that the iSCSI initiat or will be verified when it attempts to connect to th e iSCSI target.
66 11. Enter the CHAP authentication settings. If you enter the user name and password settings unde r “Use CHAP authentication” onl y , only the iSCSI target authenticates the i nitiator , i.e. the initi ators have to enter the user name password settings here to access the target.
67 12. Create an iSCSI LUN An iSCSI LUN is a logical volume mapped to the iSCSI t arget. Select one of the following modes to allocat e the disk space to the LUN: - Thin Provisioning: Select this option to allocat e the disk space in a flexible manner .
68 13. C onfirm the settin gs and click “Next ” . 14. When the target and the LUN have been created, click “Finish” ..
69 15. The target and LUN are shown on the li st under the “T arget Management” tab. Create more LUN for a target Y ou can create mu ltiple LUN for an iSCSI ta rget. F ollow the steps below to create more LUN for an iSCSI target. 1. Click “Quick Configu ration Wiza rd” under “T arget Management” .
70 2. Select “iSCSI LUN only” and click “Next” . 3. Select the LUN all ocation method. Enter the LUN name, select the LUN directory , and specify the capaci ty for the L UN.
71 4. Select the target to ma p the LUN to . Y ou can also select not to map the LUN for now . 5. Confirm the sett ings and click “Next ” ..
72 6. When the LUN has been created, c lick “Finish” to exit th e wizard. 7. The LUNs created can be mapped to and unmapped from the iSCSI target anytime.

74 Switch the mapping of an LUN Follow the steps below to switch the mapping of an L UN. 1. Select an LUN to unmap from an iSCSI target and click (Disable). 2. Next, click to un map the LUN. The LUN will appear on the Un-Mapped iSCSI LUN List. Click to map the LUN to another target.
75 After creating the iSCSI targets an d LUN on the NAS, you can use the iSCSI initiator installed on your computer (Win dows PC, Mac, or Linux) t o connect to the iSCSI targets and LUN and use the disk v olumes as the virtual drives on your computer .
76 3.2.5.2 ADVANCED ACL Y ou can create LUN masking policy to configur e the permission of the iSCSI initiators which attempt to access the LUN mapp ed to the iSCSI targets on the NAS. T o use this feature, click “ Add a P olicy” on “ ADV ANCED ACL ” .
77 If no LUN masking policy is specified f or a connected iSCSI initiator , the default policy will be appli ed. The syst em default policy allow s read and write access from all the connected iSC SI initiators. Y ou can click on the LUN masking list to edit the default poli cy .
78 3.2.6 Virtual Disk Y ou can use this function to add the iSCS I targets of other QNAP NAS or stor age servers to the NAS as the virtual di sks for stor age capacity expansion. T o add a virtual disk to the NAS, make sure an iSCSI target has been created.
79 Enter the target server IP and port num ber (default: 3260). Click “Get Remote Disk” . If authentication is requi red, enter the user name and the pass word. The n, click “ Apply” . Click to format the virtual di sk. When the status of the virtual disk is “R ea dy” , you can start to use the virtual disk as a disk volume of the NA S.
80 3.3 Access Right Management The files on the NAS can be shared a mong multiple users. For easier man agement and better control of users’ access right, you have to organize the users, user groups and their access right contr ol.
81 The number of users you can create on th e NAS varies according to the NAS models. Please refer to http://www .qnap .com/images/products /compa rison/Comparison_NAS.html for further information. The following in formation is required to creat e a new user: User name The user name must not exceed 32 ch aracters.
82 Import Users Y ou can import mu ltiple user account s to the NAS with this feat ure. T o import multiple users, fo llow the steps below: 1. Click “Import Users” . 2. Select the option “Overwrit e duplicate user s” if you want to replace the existing users.

84 The NAS supports importing the us er accounts fr om txt or csv files. T o create a list of user accounts with these file types, follow the steps below . txt 1. Open a new fil e with a text editor . 2. Enter a user's inf ormation in the f ollow ing order and separ ate them by “, ”: Username, Password, Quota (MB), Group Name 3.
85 csv (Excel) 1. Open a new file with Excel. 2. Enter a user's inf ormation in the same row in the following order: Column A: Username Column B: P assword Column C: Quota(MB) Column D: Group name 3. Go to the next row and repeat the previous step to create another user account.
86 3.3.2 User Groups A user group is a collection of users with th e same access right to the files or folders. The NAS has created the following user groups by default: administrators All the members in this group have the administrati on right of the NAS.
87 3.3.3 Share Folders 3.3.3.1 Share Folder Y ou can create different network s hare folder s for v arious types of files, and provide different file access rights to the users or user groups. The number of share folders yo u can create on the NAS var ies according to the NAS models.
88 3.3.3.2 Folder Aggregation Y ou can aggegate the share folders on the Microsoft netwo rk as a portal folder on the NAS and le t the NAS users ac cess the sh are folders through your NAS . Up to 10 share folders can be link ed to a portal folder . Note: This function is supported only in Microsoft networking serv ice.
89 4. Click and enter the remote folder setting s. Mak e sure the share folders are open for public access. Note: If there is permission cont rol on the share folders, you need to join the NAS and the remote servers to the same AD domain.

91 3.3.4 Quota T o allocat e the disk volume efficiently , you can specify the quota that can be used b y e a c h u s e r . W h e n t h i s f u n c t i o n i s e n a b led and a user has reached the disk quota, the user cannot upl oad any data to the serv er an ymore.
92 3.4 Network Services 3.4.1 Microsoft Networking Enable file service for Microsoft networking: If yo u are using Mi crosoft Windows, enable this service to access th e files on the networ k share folders. Assign a workgroup name. Standalone Ser ver Use local users for user authentication.

94 3.4.2 Apple Networking T o access the NAS from Mac, enable Appl e Filing Protocol. If your Apple T alk network uses exte nded networks a nd is assigned with multipl e zones, assi gn a zone name to the NAS . If you do not want to assi gn a network zone , enter an asterisk (*) to use the defaul t setting.
95 3.4.4 FTP Service When you enable the F TP service, you ca n define the port number for the service and the maximum number of users connect ed to the FTP at the same time. T o use the FTP service of the NAS, enable this func tion. Open an IE browser and enter ftp:// NAS IP .

When using this function, mak e sure you ha ve opened the ports on your rou ter or firewall.
97 3.4.5 Telnet/SSH After enabling this option, you can access th is server via T elnet or SSH encrypted connection (only the ac count “admin” can login remotely). Y ou can use certain T elnet or SSH connection clie nts for connect ion, e.g. putty .
98 3.4.6 SNMP Settings Y ou can enable SNM P (Simple Network Ma nagement Protocol) service on the NAS and enter the tr ap address of the SN MP ma nagement sta tions (SNMP m anager), e.

100 3.4.7 Web Server The NAS enables you to upload the web pages and man age your own website easily by the W eb Server . It also supports PHP and MySQL/ SQLite for y ou to establi sh an interactive website. T o use the W eb Server , follow the steps below .
101 Secure Connection (SSL) Enter the port number for SSL connection. 3. Upload the HTML files to the share folder (Qweb/ W eb) on the NAS. The file index.ht ml, index.ht m or in dex.php will be the home path of your web page. 4. Y ou can connect to the web page by enteri ng http://NAS I P/ in the we b browser .
102 3.4.7.1 WebDAV W ebDA V (W eb-based Distributed Authoring and V ersioning) is a set of ex tensions to the HT TP(S) protocol that allows the users to edit and manage the files collaboratively on the remote W orld Wide W eb servers.
103 Next, mount the network share folders of the NAS as the network shares on your operating systems by W ebDAV . Windows XP: 1. Right click “My Computer ” and select “Map Network Drive… ”.
104 2. Click “Sign up for online stor age or connect to a net work server” . 3. Select “Choose another network location” ..

116 Mac OS X Follow the steps below to connect to your NAS via W ebDAV on Mac OS X. Client Operating System: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.1) 1. Open “Finder” > “Co nnect to Server” , and enter the URL of the share folder . Fo rmat: http:// NAS_IP_or_HOST_NAME / SHARE_FOLDER _NAME 2.
