Chapter 2 - Setting Up Y our System Hardware © Polycom, Inc. 2 - 3 S-video provides superior video quality , and is recommended. 2. Connect the system’s audio outputs to the monitor ’s audio inputs u sing the red and wh ite connectors on the monitor cable.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 2 - 4 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Connecting the BRI Netw or k Interf ace The V500 system is available with the optional BRI network interface , which allows you to make ISDN calls. Y ou may need an NT -1 device if your site does not use an internal telephone system (PBX).
Chapter 2 - Setting Up Y our System Hardware © Polycom, Inc. 2 - 5 Installing Bat teries in the R emote Control The remote contr ol uses three AAA batteri es, which are includ ed with the system. T o install batt eries in the remot e contr ol: 1. Remove the battery cover from the back of the remote control.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 2 - 6 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation.
© Polycom, Inc. 3 - 1 3 Configuring Network Use The V500 system is factory confi gured to enable you to easily and qui ckly make video calls in most network situations. In many cases, you simply need to physically connect the system as describe d in Chapter 2, power it on, and follow the setup wiza rd.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 2 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Using the S etup Wizard When you power on the system for the first time, a setup wizar d begins to run.
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 3 Configuring Y our IP Connection T o configure your IP network connection, you need to: ❑ Configure LAN pr operties ❑ Set up your IP netwo.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 4 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation 2. Configure these settings: Setting Description Connect to my LAN Check this to specify w hether the system is par t of the LAN. Allow IP Calls Check this to enab le the system to make and receive IP calls .
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 5 Set ting Up Y our IP Netw or k Connection The following is a l ist of the common ways you can connect your V500 to an IP network so that you can make vid eo calls.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 6 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation If, therefor e, you’re limiting your calls to other systems within your intranet, y ou don’t need to perform any additional ne twork configuration to us e your V500.
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 7 ❑ A fir ewall acts as a s ecurity barrier between one network and another . Often that barrier is between a smaller network, like you might have at your home or business, and an exterior network, such as the Internet.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 8 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Refer to the Port Usage section in Appendix if you want advanced port configuration information. NetGear Routers The following procedur e applies to NetGear MR814v2 and RP614v2 routers .
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 9 Linksys Routers The following procedur e applies to the Linksys BEFSX41 router . If you have a diff erent Linksy s model, the settings may vary slightly . This pr ocedure assumes that your router is correctly configur ed an d connected to the Internet a nd that your network is operational.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 10 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation D-Link Routers The following procedur e applies to the D-Link DI-604 router .
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 11 Configur ing Firew all and NA T Proper ties Once you’ve set up your router , you must configure the V500 syste m so that it works with the firewall and NA T . Before making changes on the Firewall scr een, you should know whether or not your firewall device is H.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 12 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Calling Thr ough a Router , Using a DMZ A Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a way to configur e a network so that the device that is in the DMZ (such as the V500) is served by the router , but is outside the firewall.
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 13 There ar e two types of DMZs: ❑ V irtual DMZ — W ith a virtual DMZ, all ports through the router are opened for the device in the DMZ (in this case, the V500). This has the affect of placing the V500 on the outside of the r outer ’s fir ewall.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 14 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation T o configure H.323 set tings: 1. Go to System > Admin Sett ings > Network > IP > H.323 Set tings . 2. Configure these settings: 3. If you have a gatekeeper , select and configure these settings: Setting Description Enable IP H.
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 15 4. If you have a gateway , select and configure these settings: 5. Select and enter a prefi x or suffix for e ach bandwidth you want to allow for gateway calls.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 16 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Be sure to configure the gatew ay to use the same prefix es and suffixes y ou define fo r the system. Configur ing SIP Settings The Session Initiation Protoc ol (SIP) is a signaling protocol for Internet conferencing.
Chapter 3 - Configuring Network Use © Polycom, Inc. 3 - 17 Configur ing Quality of Service (QOS) If your network is configured to recognize and prioritize network traffic using QOS, you can configur e the V500 system to mark IP packets with the values recognized by your network.
Admini strator’ s Guide for the V 500 System 3 - 18 www .polycom. com/videodocumentation Configuring Y our ISDN Connection If you have the ISDN option, you can conne ct your V500 through ISDN as well as through one of the IP network connectio ns d escribed earlier in this chapter .
