Before you start 01 7 En Chapter 1 Before you start What’s in the box Thank you for buying this Pioneer product. Please confirm that the following accessories are in the box when you open it.
Before you start 01 8 En • Remote controllers for different devices can interfere with each other. Avoid using remotes for other equipment located close to this unit. • Replace the batteries when you notice a fall off in the operating range of the remote.
Connecting up 02 9 En Chapter 2 Connecting up • Before making or changing any rear panel connections, make sure that all the components are switched off and unplugged from the power supply.
Connecting up 02 10 En • Do not connect any of the supplied speakers to any other amplifier. This may result in malfunction or fire. • Make sure that the bare speaker wires cannot touch each other, or come into contact with other metal parts once the unit is switched on.
Connecting up 02 11 En • These speakers are magnetically shielded. However, depending on the installation location, color distortion may occur if the speaker system is installed extremely close to the screen of a television set. If this happens, turn off the television set, and then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes.
Connecting up 02 12 En 3 Slip the speaker wire underneath the tab on the base of the speaker, then gently tug the end of the wire to remove any slack between the speaker and the tab. • If you choose not to use the speaker stands, please use the supplied non-slip pads to secure the speakers in place.
Connecting up 02 13 En • Before making or changing antenna connections, make sure that the power is switched off and the unit disconnected from the wall power outlet. 1 Pull off the protective shields of both AM antenna wires. 2 Push open the tabs, then insert one wire fully into each terminal.
Connecting up 02 14 En Connecting auxiliary components This system has both stereo analog inputs and outputs. Use these to connect external components, such as a VCR, MD, CD-R or DAT recorder. • Connect the LINE IN jacks on the rear panel to an auxiliary playback component.

Controls and displays 03 20 En 19 Speaker and playback indicators The playback indicator ( ) lights during playback, and the speaker indicators show which speakers are being used to output the current source. The illustrations below show some example displays.
Getting started 04 21 En Chapter 4 Getting started Switching on and setting up After making sure everything is connected up properly, you’re ready to switch on. The first thing to do is to tell the system what kind of TV you’re using, standard or widescreen.
Getting started 04 22 En Setting the clock Setting the clock allows you to use the timer features. 1 Press TIMER/CLOCK ADJ. 2 If CLK ADJ isn’t already selected, use the / (cursor left/right) buttons to select it. On the front panel use and .
Getting started 04 23 En 3 Point the remote at your TV, hold down the CLEAR button, then enter the three digit code for your TV. The remote transmits an on/off signal to the TV.
Getting started 04 24 En • Throughout this manual, ‘Select’ means use the cursor buttons to highlight an item on-screen, then press ENTER . • The button guide at the bottom of every OSD screen shows you which buttons you’ll need to use for that screen.
Getting started 04 25 En Basic playback controls The table below shows the basic controls on the remote for playing discs. You can find other playback features in chapter 6.
Getting started 04 26 En Front panel controls The (play/pause) and (stop) buttons on the front panel work in exactly the same way as their remote control equivalents. The combined scan/skip buttons on the front panel ( and ) work slightly differently from the remote buttons.
Getting started 04 27 En If the region number is OK, it may be that the disc is damaged or dirty. Clean the disc and look for signs of damage. See also Using discs with this unit on page 80. • Why won’t the disc I loaded play? First check that you loaded the disc the right way up (label side up), and that it’s clean and not damaged.
Getting started 04 28 En Video CD/Super VCD PBC menus Some Video CD/Super VCDs have menus from which you can choose what you want to watch. These are called PBC (Playback control) menus.
Setting up for surround sound 05 29 En Chapter 5 Setting up for surround sound EV61DVD model only Choosing your surround sound settings To get the best possible surround sound from your system, make the settings below. This is particularly important when using Dolby surround.
Setting up for surround sound 05 30 En Center speaker distance setting Specifies the distance from your listening position to the center speaker: • CNT 0.
Setting up for surround sound 05 31 En Setting the relative volume level of each channel • Default setting: 0 dB You can set the relative channels from your main listening for each listening mode, including all the Surround and Advanced Surround modes.
Playing discs 06 32 En Chapter 6 Playing discs Introduction Most of the features described in this chapter make use of on-screen displays. For an expla- nation of how to navigate these, see Using the on-screen displays on page 23.
Playing discs 06 33 En • It’s not possible to switch between Orig- inal and Playlist during playback. • Not all VR format DVD-RW discs have a Playlist.
Playing discs 06 34 En Playing in slow motion You can play DVDs and Video CD/Super VCDs at four different forward slow motion speeds. DVD-Video discs can also be played at two reverse speeds. (With Video CD/Super VCDs and VR format DVD-RWs, you can only use forward slow motion playback.
Playing discs 06 35 En 3 Press ENTER on ‘A(Start Point)’ to set the loop start point. 4 Press ENTER on ‘B(End Point)’ to set the loop end point. After pressing ENTER , playback jumps back to the start point and plays the loop. • The minimum loop time is 2 seconds.
Playing discs 06 36 En For WMA/MP3 discs, select Disc Repeat , Folder Repeat or Track Repeat (or Repeat Off ). Using the front panel display • During playback, press REPEAT (SHIFT+2) to select a repeat play option. Press repeatedly until the repeat play option you want is shown in the display.
Playing discs 06 37 En For WMA/MP3 discs, select Random All (all folders) or Random Track (current folder only), (or Random Off ). Using the front panel display • Press RANDOM (SHIFT+3) to select a random play option, then press ENTER. The random mode is indicated in the front panel display and on-screen.
Playing discs 06 38 En 4 Select a title, chapter, folder or track for the current step in the program list. For a DVD disc, you can add a whole title, or a chapter within a title to the program list.
Playing discs 06 39 En • During program play, press to skip to the next program step. • Press CLEAR during playback to switch off program play. Press while stopped to erase the program list. Editing a program list After creating a program list, you can add, delete and change steps.
Playing discs 06 40 En 1 Make sure the disc is stopped, then press PROGRAM (SHIFT+1). The program indicator lights and you’re prompted to enter the first track in the program list.
Playing discs 06 41 En 3 Select a search mode. 4 Use the number buttons to enter a title, chapter, folder or track number, or a time. • For a time search, enter the number of minutes and seconds into the currently playing title (DVD) or track (Video CD) you want playback to resume from.
Playing discs 06 42 En EV61DVD model only • To switch between VR format DVD-RW audio channels, see Dual mono setting on page 30. Switching audio channels when playing a Video CD/ Super VCD When playing a Video CD/Super VCD, you can switch between stereo, just the left channel or just the right channel.
Playing discs 06 43 En • We do not recommend using DVD disc menus when the screen is zoomed as menu options will not be highlighted. • If you are displaying subtitles, these will disappear when the screen is zoomed. They will reappear when you return the screen to normal.
Playing discs 06 44 En • JPEG disc displays • Video CDs and Super VCDs should be playing with the PBC menu switched off. See Video CD/Super VCD PBC menus on page 28 if you’re unsure how to do this. • You can see disc information (number of titles/chapters, tracks, folders and so on) from the Disc Navigator screen.
Listening to the radio 07 45 En Chapter 7 Listening to the radio Finding a station The following steps show you how to tune in to FM and AM radio broadcasts using the automatic (search) and manual (step) tuning functions.
Listening to the radio 07 46 En Memorizing station presets You can save up to 30 station presets so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune in manually each time.
Using the tape deck 08 47 En Chapter 8 Using the tape deck Playing cassette tapes This unit has a tape deck that can be used for both recording and playback. Other features include auto-reverse and Dolby B Noise Reduction. • Auto-reverse lets you play or record a tape without physically taking it out and turning it over.
Using the tape deck 08 48 En 5 Press TAPE to start playback. You can also press (remote) or (front panel) to start playback when TAPE is selected. The side of the tape you’ll hear is whichever is face up when you load it. This is the ‘forward’ ( ) direction, while the other side is ‘reverse’ ( ).
Using the tape deck 08 49 En Making tape recordings You can make tape recordings from the radio, CDs, or from an external component connected to the auxiliary inputs. If you're recording from CD it’s convenient to use the ASES mode—see Automatically recording CDs (ASES) on page 50.
Using the tape deck 08 50 En 8 Start the source playing (if necessary). 9 When you’re ready to stop recording, press REC/STOP again. Automatically recording CDs (ASES) Auto Synchro Editing System (ASES for short) makes recording CDs (including those with WMA/MP3 audio files) automatic.
Using the tape deck 08 51 En Reducing the source signal level • Default setting: ATT 6DB Some auxiliary sources may produce a high signal level which may produce unpleasant distortion if recorded on the built-in tape recorder. In such cases, you may need to reduce the signal level of the line source by switching on the attenuator.
Viewing JPEG discs 09 52 En Chapter 9 Viewing JPEG discs Playing a JPEG slideshow After loading a CD/CD-R/RW containing JPEG pictures, press to start a slideshow from the first folder/picture on the disc. The player displays the pictures in each folder in alphabetical order.
Viewing JPEG discs 09 53 En 2 Use the cursor buttons ( /// ) to navigate. When a file is highlighted, a thumbnail image is displayed. • When a folder is highlighted you can press ENTER to open the Photo Browser screen for that folder. See below for more on using the Photo Browser.
Singing karaoke 10 54 En Chapter 10 Singing karaoke Singing karaoke Using the karaoke features you can plug in a microphone and mix the sound of your own voice with a backing track. The backing track can be anything you like, from a song on the radio, to a dedicated DVD karaoke disc.
Singing karaoke 10 55 En • With Video CD/Super VCDs, make sure the STEREO audio channel option (also see Switching audio channels when playing a Video CD/Super VCD on page 42) is selected so that you can use the karaoke features. • Depending on the microphone level, the sound of the disc may distort.
Home theater sound 11 56 En Chapter 11 Home theater sound EV61DVD model only Using this system you can enjoy listening to sources, analog or digital, in either stereo or surround sound.
Home theater sound 11 57 En • MUSIC – Pro Logic II 5.1 channel surround sound, especially suited to music sources, for use with any two- channel source (see also Dolby Pro Logic II Music settings .
Home theater sound 11 58 En • Press SURROUND repeatedly until STEREO shows in the display. Any active Advanced Surround mode is canceled. • See also Using the Advanced Surround effects below, for further stereo and surround playback options.
Home theater sound 11 59 En Adjusting the Advanced Surround effect level You can emphasize or reduce the effect of the Advanced Surround modes as you like. For each Advanced Surround mode you can set the effect level independently. 1 With one of the Advanced Surround modes active, press SOUND MODE repeatedly to select EFFECT.
Home theater sound 11 60 En Listening with a virtual surround back speaker • Default setting: VSB OFF The Virtual Surround Back feature can be used when listening in surround sound to simulate an added surround back channel.
Adjusting the sound 12 61 En Chapter 12 Adjusting the sound Adjusting the bass and treble To help you get the sound you want you can increase or reduce the bass and treble. • Default setting: BASS+1 / TREBLE 0 ( EV61DVD ) BASS+2 / TREBLE+1 ( EV31DVD ) 1 Press SOUND MODE repeatedly to select BASS or TREBLE.
Adjusting the sound 12 62 En 1 Press SOUND MODE repeatedly to select the ST-W display. You can also use the / (cursor left/right) buttons on the remote to select a menu item after you’ve pressed SOUND MODE . 2 Use / (cursor up/down) to select ST-W ON or OFF.
Using the timer 13 63 En Chapter 13 Using the timer Setting the wake-up timer Use the wake-up timer to set the system to switch on at any time and start playing whatever source you want. • The clock must be set to the correct time for the wake-up timer to work properly ( Setting the clock on page 22).
Using the timer 13 64 En • You can check the timer settings in standby by pressing TIMER /CLOCK ADJ . If you’ve already set the record timer, those settings will be shown first, followed by the wake-up timer settings. Turning the wake-up timer on/off If the wake-up timer is active, it will switch on everyday at the time you have set.
Using the timer 13 65 En Setting the record timer You can set the timer to record from the LINE IN source, or something off the radio. For example, you might want to record a program that is broadcast while you're at work. During the actual recording, the volume is automatically set to minimum.

Video Adjust menu 15 70 En You can adjust any or all of the following picture quality settings: • Contrast – Adjusts the contrast between light and dark. • Brightness – Adjusts the overall bright- ness. • Chroma Level – Adjusts how saturated colors appear.
Initial Settings menu 16 71 En Chapter 16 Initial Settings menu Using the Initial Settings menu The Initial Settings menu gives you complete control in setting up your DVD player, including audio, and video output settings, audience limitation settings, among others.
Initial Settings menu 16 72 En • Default setting: S2 If you find that the picture is stretched or distorted on the default S2 setting, try changing it to S1 . Language settings Audio Language • Default setting: English This setting is your preferred audio language for DVD discs.
Initial Settings menu 16 73 En • Discs with two or more subtitle languages usually allow you to select the subtitle language from the disc menu. Press DVD MENU to access the disc menu. DVD Menu Language • Default setting: w/Subtitle Lang. Some multilingual discs have disc menus in several languages.
Initial Settings menu 16 74 En If you prefer not to see the camera icon on- screen during multi-angle scenes on DVD discs, change this setting to Off . Options Parental Lock • Default level: Off • Default password: none • Default Country code: us (2119) Some DVD-Video discs feature a Parental Lock level.

Additional information 17 78 En Disc Compatibility CD-R/RW compatibility • This system will play CD-R and CD-RW discs recorded in CD Audio or Video CD/ Super VCD format, or as a CD-ROM containing MP3, WMA or JPEG files. However, any other content may cause the disc not to play, or create noise/ distortion in the output.

Additional information 17 80 En Titles, chapters and tracks DVD discs are generally divided into one or more titles. Titles may be further subdivided into chapters. CDs and Video CD/Super VCDs are divided into tracks. CD-ROMs containing MP3 files are divided into folders and tracks.
Additional information 17 81 En If necessary, use a cloth soaked in alcohol, or a commercially available CD/DVD cleaning kit to clean a disc more thoroughly. Never use benzine, thinner or other cleaning agents, including products designed for cleaning vinyl records.
Additional information 17 82 En Protecting your recordings You can protect an important recording against accidental erasure by breaking the erase-protect tab(s) with a small screwdriver. If you want to re-record on an erase-protected cassette, cover the space left by the broken tab with self-adhesive tape.
Additional information 17 83 En Moving the unit If you need to move the unit, first press STANDBY/ON on the front panel to turn the player off. Wait for GOOD BYE to disappear from the display, then unplug the power cord. Never lift or move the unit during playback—discs rotate at a high speed and may be damaged.
Additional information 17 84 En Troubleshooting Incorrect operations are often mistaken for trouble and malfunctions. If you think that there is something wrong with this component, check the points below. Sometimes the trouble may lie in another component.
Additional information 17 85 En DVD/CD/Video CD player No sound from surround or center speakers. • Refer to Setting the relative volume level of each channel on page 31 to check the speaker levels. • Check that you haven’t selected the STEREO surround mode (see Listening in stereo on page 57).

Additional information 17 89 En Screen sizes and disc formats DVD-Video discs come in several different screen aspects, ranging from TV programs, which are generally 4:3, to CinemaScope widescreen movies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3.
