5 Getting started Handset bat t ery installation and char ging Install the batt ery as shown on the next page. Once you ha ve installed the batt ery, the screen indicat es the battery status (see table below). If necessary , place the handset in the charger to char ge the battery .
6 Getting started Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment, matching the color-coded label. 8 Getting started Add and r egist er handsets The handset provided with y our SB67118 is pre-regist ered as Handset 1 . Additional handsets are assigned number s in the order they are r egistered ( Handset 2 to Handset 10 ). Y ou can register a maximum of ten handsets.

10 Getting started Der egist er all handsets Y ou may need to deregist er your handsets if you alr eady have ten regist ered handsets and need to r eplace a handset, or if you wish to change the assigned numbers of your regist ered handsets. Y ou must first deregister ALL the handsets, and then r e-register each handset that you wish to use.

12 Getting started Belt clip and optional headset Install belt clip as shown below if desir ed. Snap the belt clip into notches on both sides of the handset. T o release the belt clip, pull and unlock one flap from the notch first befor e detaching the whole belt clip from the handset.
13 Getting started Handset setup Menu settings Y ou can use the menus to change the handset settings. Press MENU/ ENTER when in idle mode (when the phone is not in use) to enter the main menu. Press DIR or or CI D to scroll t o the featur e to be changed.
14 Getting started Handset setup Ringer tone Y ou can choose one of seven ringer tones for incoming calls. Y ou Y ou can choose different ringer t ones for different lines so you can easily identify which line is ringing. When the handset is idle, press MENU/ ENTER .
15 Getting started Handset setup K ey tone Y ou can turn the key tone on and off . The handset is factory progr ammed to beep with each key pr ess. If you turn off the key tone, there ar e no beeps when you press k eys. When the handset is idle, press MENU/ ENTER .
16 Getting started Handset setup Line selection Y ou can select the default tel ephone line to be used when you mak e outgoing calls . This handset comes f actory set for Aut o selectable line, which chooses the first available line f or making a call.
17 Getting started Handset setup 5. Press Press MENU /ENTER to sa ve the setting and r eturn to the pr evious menu. There is a confirmation t one. To e xit without making changes, press OFF /CLEAR . Hold r eminder Y ou can have silence or play a beep t one every 30 seconds when there is a call on hold f or more than thr ee minutes.
18 Handset operation Handset setup Speed dial The handset has ten speed dial locations wher e you can stor e the phone numbers you wish to dial using two k ey presses. Y ou can store up to 32 digits in each location. Enter , edit or delet e a speed dial number When the handset is idle, press MENU /ENTER .

23 Getting started Mailbo x setup 3. Press PHONE/ FLASH or SPKR . The ringing of the designated phone confirms that the setup of the Al ert number is correct. 4. After confirming that the call went t o the telephone number you specified, press OFF /CLEAR to end the test.

27 Handset operation Handset basic oper ation T emporary ringer sil encing Press OFF/ CLEAR or MUTE while the handset is ringing to silenc e the ringer temporaril y on that handset only . This turns off the ringer without disconnecting the call. The next inc oming call rings normally at the preset volume.

31 Handset operation Options while on calls While r ecor ding a call: The other party hears a short beep when the rec ording begins and once each minute during the r ecording.
32 Handset operation Options while on calls Hold Use this featur e to hold one line while acc essing another , or as part of the confer ence and call transfer featur es. While on a call, press and r elease HOLD . The L 1-L 4 indicator for the line on hold flashes sl owly on the screen.
33 Handset operation Options while on calls Join a call in pr ogress Y ou can join in an ongoing call on any line that does not have call privacy set (see page 29 for information on call priv acy). The line icon appears on the screen when the line is in use.
34 Handset operation Options while on calls Thr ee-way conf erenc e calls Y ou can set up a three-party call by using two lines at the same time. Y ou can also join an intercom call with a call on an outside line. The outside line call must be established first because an int ercom call cannot be placed on hold.

36 Handset operation C OVM C OVM (centr al office voicemail) If you subscribe to voic email service with your telephone servic e provider , and you want the handset to indicate when you have new voicemail, turn the , turn the C OVM indicator on.
37 Handset operation Int er com At any given time, you can use the int ercom f eature for c onversations between handsets or a handset and the telephone base. When the system is making one or mor e external calls, the cordl ess handsets can make int ercom calls with each other .

39 Handset operation Call tr ansfer using int er com Pr ess the desired extension number , * (star) for the base, or # (pound) for all. The outside call is put on hol d and your handset screen shows Calling X:Handset X , Calling * :Base , or Calling All .
40 Handset operation Push t o talk (P TT) int er com Y ou can directly broadcast messages t o the speakerphone of any extension. The e xtension you called can respond by pr essing the INT key t o begin a two-way communication. Up t o five pairs of PTT calls establish at a time.

43 About the dir ect ory Use the directory t o store names and phone numbers. Direct ory entries are not shar ed with the telephone base or other e xtensions. Each handset has its own direct ory . Capacity The directory in each handset is independent fr om all other handsets.
44 Directory Cr eat e dir ect ory entries Cr eate and s tor e a direct ory entry Use the following steps t o store a name and number in the direct ory . When the handset is idle: Press MENU /ENTER twice t o select Directory . -OR- Press DIR to enter the dir ectory.

49 Directory Dial, delet e or edit entries Y ou can dial, delete or edit a dir ectory entry (name and number) when it is shown on the handset screen. See R eview direct ory entries on page 47 for instruction on how to display an entry.
50 About caller ID (call log) This telephone supports caller ID servic es offered by most telephone service pro viders. Depending on your service subscription, you might see the caller’s number , or the caller’s name and number from the telephone service pr ovider after the first or second ring.
51 Caller ID Caller ID hist ory How caller ID his tory (call l og) works The handset stor es caller ID information for the last 50 incoming calls . Entries are stor ed in reverse chronol ogical order . The phone deletes the oldest entry when the log is full to mak e room for new calls.

53 Caller ID Caller ID oper ation Memory match If the incoming telephone number is an e xact match with a telephone number in your direct ory, the name that appears on the screen matches the corr esponding name in your directory . For e xample, if Christine Smith calls, her name appears as Chris if this is how you enter ed it into your dir ectory .

58 Handset voicemail bo x (answering syst em) Each handset has a private voic email box that is differ ent from the general mailbox on the base. The v oicemail messages for each handset can be accessed fr om that handset or telephone base.
59 Answering system answering calls in seconds instead of rings. In this case, allow six seconds per ring when determining the appr opriate setting. Set ting your syst em t o aut omatically answer calls On the base you can set each of the four lines to aut omatically answer incoming calls in two differ ent ways.

61 Answering system Message playback From a handset, y ou can play the messages for that handset mailbo x and the general mailbox. If you have new messages, the syst em plays the new messages (oldest first) automaticall y when you access the mailbo x.
62 Answering system Message playback Options during playback When a message is playing, you can adjust the playback volume, skip, repeat, or delet e the message. When messages ar e playing on the handset: Press V OL UME to adjust the message playback v olume.

81 Appendix T r oubleshooting I cannot get a dial tone. First try all the suggestions above. Move the cor dless handset closer to the telephone base. Y ou might have moved out of range. If the previous suggestions do not work, disconnect the telephone base fr om the telephone jack and connect t o a different phone.
82 Appendix T r oubleshooting My cor dless handset isn’t performing normally . Make sur e you plug the power cord securely into the telephone base. Plug the power adapter into a diff erent, working electrical outlet without a wall switch. Move the cor dless handset closer to the telephone base.
83 Appendix T r oubleshooting The batteries do not hold a charge. If the cordl ess handset is in the charger and the charge light is not on, r efer to The charge light is off in this Tr oubleshooting guide. Charge the batt ery in the cordless handset for at least 16 hours.
84 Appendix T r oubleshooting Other electronic pr oducts can cause interfer ence to your cordl ess phone. Try installing your phone as far a way from the following electr onic devices as possible: television sets, V CRs, or other cordless telephones. Do not install this phone near a microwa ve oven or on the same electrical outlet.

86 Appendix T r oubleshooting The cordl ess handset may be too far fr om the telephone base. Charge the bat tery in the cor dless handset for at least 16 hours. F or optimum daily performance, r eturn the cordless handset to the charger when not in use.
87 Appendix T r oubleshooting My calls cut in and out while I’m using my cordl ess handset. Other electronic pr oducts can cause interfer ence with your cordless phone. T ry installing your phone as far aw ay from the following electr onic devices as possible: television sets, V CRs, or other cordless telephones.
88 Appendix T r oubleshooting The charge light is off. Make sur e you plug the power and line cords in c orrectly and secur ely. Unplug the electrical power . Wait for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cor dless handset and telephone base to r eset.
89 Appendix The answering system is r ecording incomplete messages. If a caller leaves a v ery long message, part of it may be lost when the syst em disconnects the call aft er three minutes. If the caller pauses for longer than six seconds, the system st ops recording and disconnects the call.
