If you subscribe to high-speed Internet servic e (DSL - digital subscriber line) thr ough your telephone line, you must inst all a DSL filter between the t elephone line cord and the telephone wall jack.

6 Getting started Batt ery installation and char ging Batt ery charging Once you have inst alled the battery , the screen indicates the battery st atus (see the table below). If nec essary, place the handset in the telephone base or char ger to charge the batt ery.
Getting started 7 W all mount installation The telephone base comes r eady for tabletop use. If you want t o mount your telephone on a wall, use the pr ovided wall mount bracket to c onnect with a standard dual-stud t elephone wall mounting plate.
8 Getting started W all mount installation Plug the other end of the telephone line cor d into the telephone wall jack. Plug the large end of the base power adapt er into an electrical outlet not controll ed by a wall switch. 4. A DSL filter (not included) is required if y ou have DSL high-speed Internet service.

10 Menu overview Use the menu to change the telephone set tings. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode (when handset is not in use) to enter the main menu. Press CID or DIR until > is next to the featur e you want to select. Pr e ss ME NU / SEL EC T t o se le ct o r sa v e t he i nd ic at ed i te m.
11 T elephone settings Handset settings Ringer volume Y ou can set the handset ringer volume level (1-6), or turn the ringer off . When the ringer is off, appears on the handset screen. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode to enter the main menu. Press CID or DIR to scroll t o >RING ERS .
12 T elephone settings Handset settings V oicemail waiting (visual message waiting) indicat or If you subscribe to a voic email service offer ed by your telephone service pr ovider , this featur e provides a visual indication when you have new voic email messages.
13 T elephone settings Handset settings K ey tone The handset is programmed t o beep with each key press. Y ou can turn the key t one off, so there are no beeps when y ou press keys. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode to enter the main menu. Press CID or DIR to scroll t o >SETTINGS , then pr ess MENU /SELECT .
14 T elephone settings Handset settings Home ar ea code If you dial seven digits to mak e a local call (no area code r equired), enter your area c ode into the tel ephone as home area code. When y ou receiv e a call from within your home ar ea code, the caller ID history only displays the seven digits of the telephone number .
15 T elephone settings T elephone base ringer volume When the telephone base is not in use, pr ess / /-VOLUME+ on the telephone base t o set the ringer volume level (1-6), or turn the ringer off . A sample of the ringer sounds as you adjust the volume.
16 Making, answering and ending calls Making a call T o make a call: Press PHONE/ FLASH , then wait for a dial t one. -OR- Press /SPEAKER to use the speak erphone, then wait for a dial tone. Use the dia ling key s t o en te r the tel ephon e num ber .
17 T elephone operation Making, answering and ending calls Answering a call Press any dialing k ey ( 0 - 9 , or # ) or PHONE/ FLASH . -OR- Press /SPEAKER to use the speak erphone. Speak erphone During a call, press /SPEAKER t o switch between speakerphone and normal handset use.
18 T elephone operation Redial Each handset stores the 10 most r ecently called numbers in the redial list. View numbers in the r edial list Press REDIAL/ P AUSE in idle mode. Press REDIAL/ P AUSE . Press DIR , CID or REDIAL/ P AUSE repeat edly to scr oll through the 10 most recently called numbers (up to 30 digits each).
19 T elephone operation Redial Copy a number fr om the redial lis t to the dir ectory Press REDIAL/ P AUSE . Press CID or DIR to scroll t o the number you want to sav e into the directory . Press MENU /SELECT twice. The screen shows EDIT NUMBER . Press CID or DIR to move the cursor t o the left or right.
20 T elephone operation Options while on calls V olume contr ol While on a call, press DIR /VOLUME to incr ease or CID /VOLUME to decr ease the listening volume. When the volume reaches the minimum or ma ximum setting, you hear two beeps. NOTE: The handset volume setting (1-5) and speakerphone volume setting (1-6) are independent.
21 T elephone operation Options while on calls T emporary tone dialing If you have dial-pulse (r otary) dialing service only , you can temporaril y switch fr om pulse-tone dialing to t ouch-tone dialing during a call. During a call, press T O NE . T ouch-tones are sent when you press dialing k eys.
22 T elephone operation Options while on calls T o access the r edial list while on a call: Press REDIAL/ P AUSE . The screen shows the number most recentl y called. If it is not the desired number , press REDIAL/ P AUSE . Press DIR , CID or REDIAL/ P AUSE repeat edly to scr oll to the desired number .
23 T elephone operation Handset locator Y ou can use the handset locator featur e to find misplaced handset s. T o start the paging tone: Press /HAND SET LOCA TOR on the telephone base to start the paging t one on all handsets for 60 seconds.
24 T elephone operation Inter com Mak e and answer an inter com call Use the inter com featur e for conversations between handsets. Press INT on your handset when not in use. If you have two handsets, your originating handset screen shows CALLING O THER HANDSET .

26 Direct ory overview Shar ed directory The directory is st ored in the telephone base, and is shar ed by all handsets. Changes made to the dir ectory on any one handset apply to all. NOTE: Only one handset can review the direct ory at one time. If another handset attempts t o enter the direct ory, the screen shows NOT A VAILABLE A T THIS TIME .

29 Directory Review the dir ectory Review dir ectory entries Press DIR when in idle mode to show the first entry in the directory . DIRECTORY EMPT Y appears if there ar e no directory entries. -OR- Y ou can also show the first entry in the directory by pressing MENU/ SELE CT when in idle mode.
30 Directory Dial, delete and edit a dir ectory entry Y ou can dial, delete or edit the displayed dir ectory entry. See Review dir ectory entries on page 29 or Sear ch by name on page 29 to show an entry from the dir ectory first.
31 Directory Speed dial locations The telephone base has 10 speed dial locations ( 0 - 9 ). Speed dial assignment s can only be selected fr om existing directory entries. Assign or r eassign a directory entry t o a speed dial location Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode.
32 Directory Speed dial locations Dial a speed dial number When in idle mode, press and hol d a dialing key ( 0 - 9 ) to display the desir ed speed dial entry. Press PHONE/ FLASH or /SPEAKER to dial the displayed tel ephone number . NOTE: If the speed dial location you select is empty , the screen shows the speed dial list.

34 Caller ID Caller ID history How caller ID his tory (call l og) works The telephone stor es caller ID information about the last 50 incoming calls in the telephone base. Each entry may ha ve up to 24 digits f or the telephone number and 15 characters f or the name.
35 Caller ID Caller ID operation Missed (new) calls indicator When you have calls that have not been r eviewed, all handset idle screens show X(X) MISSED C ALL(S ) .
36 Caller ID Caller ID operation View the call er ID history Review the caller ID hist ory to find out who called, to r eturn the call or to copy the caller’s name and number int o your direct ory. CALL LOG EMPT Y appears if there ar e no records in the caller ID hist ory.

39 Answering system set tings Use the answering system menu in the handset t o turn the answering system on or off or change the set tings for the outgoing announcement, call screening, number of rings, r emote access code and the message alert tone.

41 Answering system Answering system set tings Call scr eening Y ou can choose whether or not incoming messages are played thr ough the speaker on the t elephone base while they ar e being recorded. However , whether the call screening is on or off , the incoming messages can always be played thr ough the handset.

43 Answering system Answering system set tings Rec ording time Y ou can set the time limit for each message recor ded to three minutes, two minutes, or one minute. The def ault setting is three minutes. T o change the setting: Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode to enter the main menu.
44 Answering system Answering system o verview Answering sys tem and voic email indicators Y our telephone has separate indicat ors for two different types of voic e messages: those left on its built-in answering s ystem and those left on your service pr ovider’s voicemail (f ees may apply).
45 Answering system Answering system o verview V oice pr ompts The system pr ovides voice prompts t o guide you to operat e the answering system. Message capacity The answering system can r ecord up to 99 messages, depending on the length of each message.
46 Answering system Answering system o verview If call screening is on and you want t o adjust the playback volume to a comfortabl e level (1-8) while it is recor ding messages, press / /-VOLUME+ on the telephone base. This volume set ting is shared with message playback, so when you play messages at volume 1, they play at a v ery low volume.
47 Answering system Message playback Listen t o messages Y ou can use either a handset or the telephone base to play messages. If there ar e new messages, the system plays back only the new messages (in chronological or der). If there are no new messages, the syst em plays back all old messages (in chronol ogical order).
48 Answering system Message playback Options during playback When a message is playing, you can adjust the playback v olume, skip, repeat, or delete the message. When messages ar e pl aying on the tel ephone base: Press / /-VOLUME+ to adjust the message playback volume (1-8).
49 Answering system Message playback Delet e all old messages Use this feature t o delete all old messages. Once deleted, y ou cannot retrieve the del eted messages.
50 Answering system Rec ording and pla ying memos Memos are messages you r ecord yourself . They are saved, played and del eted exactly lik e incoming messages. Y ou can record a memo as a r eminder to yourself , or leave a message for someone else using the same telephone.

52 Answering system Remot e access Y ou can access the answering system r emotely by dialing your home telephone number fr om any touch-tone telephone.

59 Appendix T roubleshooting Make sur e you have a dial tone befor e dialing. The cordless handset may take a sec ond or two to find the telephone base and produce a dial t one. This is normal. Wait an e xtra second before dialing. Check that all the telephones connect ed to the same telephone line are hung up.
60 Appendix T roubleshooting Other electronic pr oducts such as HAM radios and other DECT phones can cause interfer ence to your cordl ess telephone. Try installing y our telephone as far a way as possible from these types of electronic devic es. The batt eries do not hold a charge.
61 Appendix T roubleshooting If your telephone is plugged in with a modem or a sur ge protector , plug the telephone (or modem/sur ge protector) into a diff erent location. If this doesn’t solve the problem, r elocate your telephone or modem f arther apart from one another , or use a different sur ge protector .
62 Appendix T roubleshooting Do not install this telephone near a micr owave oven or on the same electrical outlet. Y ou may experienc e decreased performanc e while the microwav e oven is operating. If your telephone is plugged in with a modem or sur ge protector , plug the telephone (or modem/sur ge protector) into a diff erent location.
