1 Intr oduction This A T&T CL4939 big button big display t elephone has a large til t display for easy viewing and extr a large butt ons for easy viewing and dialing. Y ou must use the supplied power adapter t o use most features of this telephone.

9 Getting started Install ation options The telephone base comes with the br acket mounted f or tabletop use. If you want to mount your t elephone on a wall, use the mounting brack et to connect with a standar d dual-stud telephone wall mounting plate.
10 Getting started Install ation options Plug one end of the telephone line cor d into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the telephone base. R oute the telephone line cor d through the slot. Bundle the tel ephone line cord and secur e it with a twist tie.
11 Getting started Plug the small end of the power adapter into the PO WER jack on the back of the telephone base. Plug the lar ge end into an electrical outlet not controll ed by a wall switch. Rotat e the top of the display up or down to adjust the angle of the scr een for maximum visibility .
12 Getting started Install ation options Lift the handset and place it aside. Hold down the switch hook on the telephone base, then slide the handset tab upwar ds to r emove it from the slot. Rotat e the handset tab 180 degrees. Push the handset t ab down into the grooves so it set tles into position.
13 Getting started Install ation options Plug the small end of the power adapter into the PO WER jack on the back of the telephone base. 15 T elephone settings Menu setup Menu operation The screen display pr ompts help you set up the telephone when you pr ess MENU . NOTE: Y ou can exit feature setup at an y time by pressing FLASH or by lifting the handset when there is no incoming call.

If you choose tS 2-4 (or tS 4-6 ), the answering system answers aft er two (four , if you select tS 4-6 ) rings if there are new messages.
18 T elephone settings Menu setup Set date and time When the telephone is idle, the scr een shows the date and time. Press MENU r epeatedly until the screen shows SET TIME/DA TE . Press SELE CT to show MM/DD/YYYY . Use the dial pad keys ( 0 through 9 ) to set the blinking digits.
19 T elephone settings Menu setup Set home ar ea code You must program your area code so your telephone can properly recognize and dial calls. For calls within your ar ea code: Y ou dial: Enter in ste.
20 T elephone settings Press SELECT or MENU to save your setting and move to the next option when you have finished entering local area codes. NOTE: If you do not need to program local area codes, press SELECT repeatedly to set other featur es.
21 Using handset T o make a call: Lift the handset, wait for the dial tone, and then dial a number . T o answer a call: Lift the handset. T o end a call while using the handset: Place the handset in the telephone base. Using speak erphone T o make a call: Press SPEAKER then dial a number.
22 T elephone operation Chain dialing Use this feature t o dial numbers stor ed in the directory , two-touch memory locations or call history while you ar e on a call.

24 T elephone operation Options while on calls Audio assist™ Some voices will sound louder and clear er if you press A UDIO ASSIS T while you ar e on a call using the handset. Press A UDIO ASSIS T again to turn the feature off . This featur e automatically turns off when you hang up.
25 T elephone operation Options while on calls Flash/call waiting If you subscribe to call waiting service fr om your telephone service pr ovider , you hear a beep if someone calls you while you ar e already on a call. Press FLASH to put y our current call on hold and take the new call.
26 T elephone operation Line power mode (no A C power) This telephone pr ovides minimal functionality during a power failur e. When AC power is not available, the scr een is blank and many telephone featur es do not function. Only touch-tone dialing and volume adjustment (ringer volume and handset volume) are support ed.
27 Two-touch memory T wo-t ouch memory overview and st or age T wo-touch memory ov erview This telephone has 10 two-touch memory locations (speed dial locations) where y ou can store t elephone numbers you wish to dial using fewer ke ys than usual. Each two-touch memory location can stor e a telephone number with up to 24 digit s.

42 Answering syst em overview Message capacity The answering system can r ecord up t o 99 messages, depending on the length of each message. Individual messages can be up to three minutes long, and the t otal maximum rec ording time is 19 minutes. Messages remain a vailable for replay until y ou delete them.

49 Answering system operation Call scr eening, priority call and call int er cept Call scr eening If CALL SCREENING is ON (see F eatur e summary on page 15), the incoming messages on your telephone ar e played through the speak er while they are being r ecorded.
50 Answering system operation R emot e acc ess Use the remote ac cess featur e to access your answering system fr om any touch-tone t elephone on a different t elephone line (away fr om your home). A three-digit r emote access code is requir ed. This code is pre-set t o 500 .

57 Appendix The messages on the answering system ar e incomplete. If a caller leaves a v ery long message, part of it may be lost when the system disc onnects the call after three minutes. If the caller pauses for mor e than 7 seconds, the system st ops recor ding and disconnects the call.
