2 This 944 telephone is fully compatib le with any A T&T Four-Line Intercom Speakerphone 964 or 955 units you ma y have installed. Y ou can use up to a total of 12 944/955/964 units together as e xtensions on your phone system.

5 BEFORE Y OU BEGIN Audible Signals Y ou have an incoming intercom call. Y ou have an incoming transf er red call. The e xtension number you just progr ammed has already been assigned. Choose another number for this e xtension. The e xtension you are calling is in DND mode.
6 INST ALLA TION NOTE: If y ou ar e installing multiple phones in y our telephone system, y ou must install and pr ogram one set at a time. If mor e than one extension is assigned the same e xtension number , a r epeating short ring (error ring) will sound at all e xtensions.
7 INST ALLA TION 2 Connect the telephone line cords to the telephone. • Four One-Line Jacks (T o use this installation option, you’ ll need to purc hase two two-line adapters. Adapter s are available at retail stores or by calling 1 800 222–3111.
8 INST ALLA TION W all Installation 1 Reverse the handset tab. Hold down the s witchhook, then pull the tab out and rotate it 180 degrees. Push the tab down into the groov es so it settles into position. 3 Connect the handset cord. Plug one end of the coiled handset cord into the jack on the left side of the phone.
9 INST ALLA TION 2 Install one 9V battery. • Press in on the tabs and remov e the telephone base. • Use a small Phillips head screwdriver to r emove the scre w and open the batter y door . • Insert the 9V batter y (included), and replace the screw to close the batter y door .
10 5 Connect the handset cord. Plug one end of the coiled handset cord into the jack on the left side of the phone. Plug the other end into the handset, and hang up. 6 Connect the power adapter to the telephone. Use only the pow er adapter provided with this product.
11 Modular T elephone J ack Lines 3 and 4 Modular T elephone J ack Lines 1 and 2 Standard Electrical Outlet Power Cord INST ALLA TION 9 Plug the power adapter into a standard electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.
12 INST ALLA TION • Two Two-Line Jacks Con v enience P or ts If you want to connect another device (suc h as a modem or fax machine) to the wall jack, you can use the jacks on the phone labeled A UX. These convenience ports use Lines 3 and 4; a call picked up on Line 3 or 4 at another e xtension may interrupt fax, modem, or message transmission.
13 FEA TURE SET UP Use the Navigation buttons to progr am or chang e the featur es setup. • Press G to enter the progr amming mode. The screen displa ys: NOTE: If y ou do not pr ess a k ey to continue pr og r amming within 20 seconds, the tele phone automatically exits the pr ogramming mode.

15 FEA TURE SET UP Select the Ringer T ype 1 Press G . 2 Press - until the screen displays RINGER TYPE , then press > . 3 Press - or + to select the desired setting. Y ou will hear a sample of each ringer type as y ou move through the settings. 4 Press S to store your selection.

17 FEA TURE SET UP 17 Set Audio Mode Choose the mode (speakerphone or headset) the phone will automatically use to make and answ er calls when the handset is in the cradle. 1 Press G . 2 Press - until the screen displays AUDIO MODE , then press > .

20 NOTE: When y ou mak e a call, the phone selects the Prime Line you progr ammed. When y ou answer a call, the phone automatically selects the ringing line.
21 TELEPHONE OPERA TION T o make a call, press and release h or press the desir ed LINE button and then press h . The HEADSET light goes on. W ait for a dial tone, then dial the call.
22 TELEPHONE OPERA TION Call Priv acy T o ensure call privacy , the phone allows only one set at a time to use a line. Canceling Call Privacy During the call, press the LINE button for the call. Y ou’ll hear a short beep. Others can now join the call.
23 TELEPHONE OPERA TION Line-in-Use Lights Whenever a line is in use, the Line light will be on. Use the f ollowing chart to determine the exact status of a line.
24 TELEPHONE OPERA TION Speak erphone or Headset T o dial the same number again, press a . The phone automatically selects an available line and dials the last number . NOTE: Y ou will experience a dela y bef or e the call is dialed when using the Redial f eatur e.
25 TELEPHONE OPERA TION Mute This featur e lets you mute the telephone so that you can hear the other party , but the other par ty can’t hear y ou. T o activate this featur e, press and r elease M . The MUTE light goes on. T o r eturn to the conversation, press and release M again.
26 TELEPHONE OPERA TION T o talk privately with one party: 1 Press H to place both lines on hold. 2 Press a LINE button to talk privately with the person on that line. 3 Press C to resume the conference call. T o dr op one line: Press the LINE button of the party you want to keep.

28 SPEED DIAL OPERA TION This telephone has 24 Speed Dial locations where you can stor e phone numbers (up to 32 digits long) you wish to dial by pressing only one or two buttons. T o access locations 13 through 24, press l and then the SPD button for the desir ed location.
29 INTERCOM OPERA TION Use with p to announce to all system phones Use with I to make an intercom confer ence call Ring another system phone connected to Line 1 Announce over the speaker to the phone .
30 INTERCOM OPERA TION This intercom f eatures both a single-phone page and a system-wide pag e. A single-phone page alerts only one phone; a system-wide pa g e alerts all phones. Any phone with the Do Not Disturb (DND) f eature activated will not receive a pag e.
31 INTERCOM OPERA TION Making an Inter com Call with the Speak erphone or Headset With the handset in the cr adle and the desired line idle, 1 Press I . The phone will automatically activate the line in the mode (headset or speakerphone) of the last call made.

33 ADDING A F AX MACHINE NOTE: Do not connect a fax machine to Line 1. Doing so will interrupt the telephone intercom data channel. Y ou may wish to use a fax mac hine with your phone. Choose Line 2, 3 or 4 for the f ax machine, and connect it according to the manufacturer’ s instructions for installation and use.

36 EXP ANDING THE PHONE SY STEM When you combine tw o or more 944/955/964 phones you cr eate an interacting system where phones shar e lines. Y ou can have up to 12 phones and up to 15 telephone lines. The system can be e xpanded with or without Centre x ser vice.
37 EXP ANDING THE PHONE SY STEM Priv ate Lines Y ou can use the fourth line on each station as a private line. A pr ivate line is a telephone number assigned to just one e xtension.
38 CENTREX OPERA TION Setup Checklist Befor e e xpanding your system or installing f or Centre x, review the installation checklist. If you have Centre x, contact your local telephone company f or fur ther information about Centre x ser vice.
CENTREX OPERA TION 39 Setting Ring Dela y Duration This featur e allows other system telephones’ calls to ring at the Console phone. After a specified r ing delay , the calls will ring at the Console phone. (See “Program the Centr e x Console Delay ed Ring Time” in FEA TURE SET UP .
