3 BEFORE Y OU BEGIN • Y ou must have a modular telephone jack and an electrical outlet near where y ou’ re installing the phone. • The total length of telephone line cord used in this system is important. If the total length of telephone line cord is more than 600 feet, y ou may need to use a special filter device.
4 T able/Desk Installa tion 1 Install 3 AA batteries. • Press in on the tabs and remov e the telephone base. • Press in on the tabs on the batter y door , and remove it. • Insert 3 AA batter ies, and replace the batter y door . • Replace the telephone base.

6 W all Installation 1 Reverse the handset tab. Hold down the s witchhook, then pull the tab out and rotate it 180 degrees. Release the tab so it settles into position. 2 Install 3 AA batteries. • Press in on the tabs and remov e the telephone base.
7 4 Connect the telephone line cords to the telephone. • Four One-Line Jacks • Two T wo-Line Jacks 5 Connect the power adapter to the telephone. Use only the pow er adapter provided with this product. T o obtain a replacement, call 1 800 222–3111.
8 6 Mount the phone on the wall. • Four One-Line Jacks • Two T wo-Line Jacks NOTE: If y ou have thr ee modular telephone jacks, mount the phone onto a jack without a wall-mounting adapter . If y ou hav e four modular telephone jacks, mount the phone onto a jack without a wall-mounting adapter .
9 7 Plug the power adapter into a standard electrical outlet. Conv enience P ort : If you want to connect another device (suc h as an answ er ing machine or fax mac hine) to the wall jack, you can use the jack on the phone labeled AUX .
10 Assign Inter com Number 1 Do not lift the handset. 2 Press G , * , # . 3 Enter two digits (11–22). 4 Press I . Y ou will hear a confir mation r ing. NOTE: If y ou duplicate an intercom number , y ou’ll hear a warning tone. Repeat Ste ps 1–4 and assign a diff erent n umber .
11 Set for T w o or Thr ee Phone Lines If you’ re not using all four phone lines, you need to turn of f the Line Status for the un used line. If you e xpand to a third or f our th line, tur n the Line Status back on. Y ou cannot tur n off line status for Line 1.
12 OPERA TION Pr events interruptions during a call Activate custom- calling services Redial last number called Put a caller on hold Mute the microphone Activate speakerphone Adjust Ringer and handset.
13 NOTE: When you mak e a call, the phone selects the first a vailable line. When y ou answer a call, the phone automatically selects the ringing line. If y ou hav e a pr ivate line, the phone automatically selects that line. Making a Call Handset T o make a call, lift the handset.
14 V olume Handset/Speak erphone V olume Control When you are on a call, press + to increase handset or speakerphone volume. Press - to decrease volume. Ringer V olume Y ou can adjust the r inger volume while the phone is ringing. While the line is ringing, press + or - to reach the desired lev el.
15 Redial The last number dialed on this phone is stored in r edial memor y until you dial another number . T o dial the same number again, lift the handset or press K , listen for the dial tone, then press R . Auto Redial Select a line and press A . The screen displays BUSYDIAL as long as the number you’ re calling is busy .
16 OPERA TION Mute This featur e lets you mute the telephone so that y ou can hear the other party , but the other par ty can’t hear you. T o activate this feature , press and release M . The MUTE light goes on. T o r etur n to the conversation , press and release M again.
17 T o dr op one line: Press the LINE button of the party you want to keep. The other line will be dropped. NOTE: Occasionally , the f ar -end parties on a confer ence call might not hear one another . Do Not Disturb Use this f eature to prevent interruptions dur ing a call.
18 Timer The screen displays the elapsed time in min utes and seconds for the first hour (up to 59 minutes, 59 seconds), then begins at zero again. The timer automatically stops when y ou hang up. The screen displa ys the recorded time for about six seconds.
19 TELEPHONE MEMOR Y Store a pause in a memory number Store a tone signal in a memory number Dir ectory Card One-touch memory locations This telephone has 19 memor y locations. Each location can store up to 16 digits. Dial numbers stored in memor y locations by lifting the handset (or pressing K ) and pr essing the button for the location.

22 This intercom f eatures both a single-phone page and a system-wide page. A single-phone page alerts only one phone; a system-wide pa ge alerts all phones. Any phone with the Do Not Disturb (DND) f eature activated will not receive a pag e. An intercom call or single-phone pag e automatically activates the speakerphone on the receiving phone.
23 Paging All Phones 1 Press and release or p , * . 2 Speak toward the telephone. 3 Press and release K to disconnect. Ans w ering an ALLP AGE 1 Press or p . 2 Use the already activ ated speakerphone, or lift the handset. 3 T o end, press and release K or hang up.
24 If this telephone does not work pr operly , tr y the following sugg estions. If you’ re still having problems, call 1 800 222–3111. No Dial T one • Make sure all plugs are connected properl y . Inspect the line cord connections at the modular jack and at the telephone.
25 IN C ASE OF DIFFICUL TY T elephone Does Not Ring • Make sure the Do Not Disturb (DND) f eature is not activated. • Make sure Ring er s are turned on. • If there are sev eral non-system phones on the line that doesn’t r ing, disconnect some of them.
26 When you combine tw o or more 874 phones you create an inter acting system. Y ou can have up to twelv e 874 phones and up to eight telephone lines. The 874 can also be used with Centre x ser vice. Y ou can use the four th line on each station as a private line.
27 Setup Checklist Befor e expanding y our system or installing for Centre x, review the installation chec klist. If you hav e Centre x, contact your local telephone company f or further information about Centrex service. • The phone number for Line 1 must be the same on all phones in order f or the Intercom and P aging features to wor k.
28 Attendant Operation Once another 874 phone has enabled its delay ed r ing, the attendant phone will receive those calls. All the 874 features w ork in the same manner as described in the beginning of this manual. The attendant phone can pick up other Centr ex lines through Centr ex switc hing.
29 Picking Up Another Station’ s Line 1 Choose a free Centre x line. 2 Enter the Centre x pickup code. 3 Enter the seven-digit phone number of the line y ou want — OR — Press the corresponding memor y locations for the Centr ex pic kup code and the seven-digit phone number f or the station sending the dela yed r ing.
