- 5 - Before Use Before Use Quick Guide This is an overview of how to record and play back pictures with the camera. For each step, be sure t o refer to the pag es indicated in brackets.

Before Use - 8 - Before Use Maintenance and Waterproof Performance ∫ T o prevent water leaking into the camera, observe the following items before usin g it .
- 9 - Before Use If there is any foreig n object, remove with atta ched brus h. I : Brush (supplied) • If ther e is any foreig n object , su ch as lint, h air , sa nd, etc., on the surroundin g area, water will leak w ithin a few seconds c ausing malfunction.

- 11 - Before Use • Use the camera und erwater up to 10 m (33 feet ) depth, wat er temperat ure f rom 0 o C to 40 o C (32 o F to 10 4 o F), and not longer t han 60 mi nutes co nti nuous l y . • If there is wat er or dirt on the camera , use it aft er wiping it of f with a dry soft cl oth and ha ve it dry out in a well v ent ilated area.
Before Use - 12 - 1 With the card/ ba t tery door a nd t erminal cover closed, rinse w ith water , or if it was used in the sea, soak th e unit in fresh water in a shallow contai ner of for 10 minutes or less. • If you have att ached the silicon ja cket, be sure to rinse the camer a after remov ing it.

- 17 - Preparation Preparation Att aching the Hand Strap Run the han d strap through th e hand strap eyelet on the cam era. • If the hand st ra p cord is loose, it may sna g when t he terminal cov er is opened or closed.
Preparation - 18 - Preparation Att aching the Silicon J acket It is recommende d to attach the silicon jacket to prevent unintenti onal opening o f the card/battery door or the terminal cover when using the came ra in the mountains or near water . • Check that t his unit is turned of f.
- 19 - Preparation Preparation Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d charger and ba tter y . • The camera has a function for distinguishing batteries which can be used safely . The dedicated battery sup port s this function.
Preparation - 20 - ∫ About the [CHARGE] indicator • When the [CHARGE] indica tor flashes – The batt ery t empe rature is too hi gh or too lo w . It is reco mmend ed to c har ge the ba tt ery aga in in an ambient te mperatur e of betwe en 10 ºC to 35 ºC (50 o F to 95 o F) .
- 21 - Preparation ∫ Charging time • The indic ate d chargi ng ti me is for when the battery has b een discharg ed completel y . The charging ti me may vary dependin g on how the battery has been used. Th e charging time for the battery in hot/cold environments or a battery that has not been used for long time may be longer than normal.
Preparation - 22 - ∫ Recording still pictures Recording conditions by C IP A standard • CIP A is an abbreviatio n of [ Camera & Imaging Produ cts A ssociatio n]. • T emper ature: 23 o C (73.4 o F )/ Humidity: 50% when LCD monit or is on. • Using a Panasoni c SD Memory Card (32 MB).
- 23 - Preparation ∫ Playback Note • The operating times and number of recordable pic tures will differ according to the environme nt and the operating conditions. For example , in the following c ases, the o perati ng times shorten and the number of re co rdable pictures is redu ced.
Preparation - 24 - Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l)/the Battery • Check that t his unit is turned of f. • Confirm that there is no foreign object. (P8) • We rec ommend us ing a P anasonic ca rd. 1 :Slide the [LOCK ] switch B , an d release the lock.
- 25 - Preparation Note • Remove the batt ery after use. S tore the removed battery in th e battery case (supplie d). • Do not remove the bat tery until th e LCD Monitor turns of f as th e se ttings on the camera may not be stored pr operly . • The supplied ba ttery is des i gne d only for the camera.
Preparation - 26 - ∫ Connecting the AC adaptor and multi conversion adaptor instead of the battery The AC Adaptor (optional) can only be used wi th the designated Panasonic multi conversion adaptor (optional). The AC adaptor (optional) cannot be used by itself.
- 27 - Preparation About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recorded pict ures to a card. (P15 2) • Memory size: Approx. 40 MB • Recordabl e motion pictur es: QVGA (320 k 240 pixel s) only • The built- in memory can be used as a temporary st or age devi ce when the card bein g us ed becomes f ull.
Preparation - 28 - The following cards which conform to t he SD video s tandard can be used with this unit. (These cards are indicated as card in the te x t.) • Only cards be arin g the SDHC logo (indic ating that the card conforms to SD v i deo standa rds ) may be used as 4 GB to 32 GB car ds.
- 29 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the c amera is shipped. Press [MENU/SET] . Press 3 / 4 to sele ct the langua ge, and pres s [MENU/SET]. • [PRECAUTIONS] is displayed. Be sure to check thi s so that you can main t ain the waterproof perform ance.
Preparation - 30 - Press 2 / 1 to select the item s (year , month, day , hour , minute, disp lay sequ ence or tim e display fo rmat), and press 3 / 4 to set. A : T ime at the home area B : T ime at the travel destination (P104) ‚ : Cancel without setting the clock.
- 31 - Preparation Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back as you like and menus that enable you t o have more fun with the camera and use it more eas ily .
Preparation - 32 - This section descr ibes how to select the Normal Picture M ode settings, and the sam e setting can be used for the [PLA YBACK ] me nu and [SETUP] menu as well. Example: Setting [AF MODE] from [ Ø ] to [ š ] in the Normal Picture M ode Setting menu items Press the [OFF /ON] button.

Preparation - 34 - By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings can be easily found. • Some of the menu items cannot be set by the Modes . Using the q uick menu Press and h old [Q.MENU] when rec ording. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the menu it em and the setting and then press [MENU/SET] t o clos e the m enu.
- 35 - Preparation Perform these settings if you need to. About the Setup Menu [CLOCK SET], [ECON OMY] and [AUTO REVIEW] are important items. Check their settings before using t hem. • In the Intelli gent Auto Mode , only [CLOCK SET], [W ORLD TIME], [BEEP ], [LA NGUAGE] a nd [ST ABILIZER DEMO.
Preparation - 36 - • When you connec t the c amera to a TV , t he vol ume of t he TV speakers does not change . • The bright ness of the pict ures displ ay ed on the LCD monitor is increa sed so some subject s may appear dif feren t from real li fe on the LCD monito r .
- 37 - Preparation • The [P A TTERN] setting is fixed to [ ] in the Intelligent Auto Mode and the Clipbo ard Mode. • Motion pi cture recording fr ame display is only an ap proximation. • Recording frame dis play may disappea r when zoomin g to T ele depending on the pi cture size setting.
Preparation - 38 - • The A uto R eview functi on is activate d reg ardle ss of its se tting when u sing Auto B racket (P71) , [SELF PORT RAIT] (P76) , [HI-SPEED BUR S T] (P 82) , [FLASH BURST] (P83) and [PHOT O FRAME] (P86) in Scen e Mode , Burst Mode (P1 17) and when recording still pict ures with audio (P12 0) .
- 39 - Preparation • When [PC] is select ed , the camera is conne cted via the “US B Mass S torage” communication system. • When [Pict Br idge(P TP)] is selec ted, the camer a is connecte d via the “P TP (Pictur e T ransfer Prot ocol )” co mmu nic ation syst em.
Preparation - 40 - • Inter lace meth od/progr essive met hod i= interla ce scanning is s ca nning the scr ee n with half of the ef fective scanning line s every 1/60 seconds, where p= progressi v e scanning is a hig h density image s ignal that is scanning the screen with all t he effe ctive scanni ng lines every 1/ 60 seconds.
- 41 - Preparation • Use a battery with s uf ficient battery po we r or th e AC adaptor ( opt ional) and multi conversion adaptor (op tional) when fo rmatting. Do not t urn the camera off duri ng formatt i ng. • If a card has been ins erted, onl y the c ard is formatted.

Preparation - 44 - Press the Sh utter button halfway to focus. Press the Sh utter button fully (push it in furth er), and t ake the pictur e. ∫ For more det ails, refer to the explanation of each Recording Mode. Press th e Motion Pic ture button to st art the recording.
- 45 - Basic [REC] Mode: ñ Basic T aking Pictures Using the Autom atic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this Mode f or beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
Basic - 46 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 seconds, after which its color changes to the usual red. • [ ¦ ] is set if non e of the scenes are applicable, and th e standard settings are set.
- 47 - Basic It is possible to set the focus to the specified subject. Focus will keep following the subject automatically even if it mov es. 1 Press 3 . • [ ] is display ed in the upper lef t of the scre en. • AF T rackin g frame is disp lay ed in the center of the screen.

- 49 - Basic [REC] Mode: · T aking Pictur es with Y our Favo rite Settings (Normal Picture M ode) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater fr eedom by c hanging various settings in t he [REC] menu.
Basic - 50 - Aim the AF area at the subject, and t hen press the shutter button halfway . - 51 - Basic When the jitter alert [ ] appears, use [ST ABILIZER] (P120) , a tripod or the Self-timer (P69) . • Shutter speed will be slower pa rticularly in the followin g cases. Keep the camera still from the moment the shut ter butto n is pressed unt il the picture ap pears on the screen.
Basic - 52 - [REC] Mode: ñ· ¿¨ T aking Pictur es with the Zoom Y ou can zoom-in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom-out to record landscapes in wide angle. T o make subj ects appear even c loser (maximum of 9.8 k ), do not set the picture size t o the highest setting for each aspect ratio ( X / Y / W ).
- 53 - Basic ∫ T ypes of zooms • When using the Z oom function, an estimate of the focus range will appear i n conjunction with the zoom display bar . [Example: 0.3 m (0.99 feet) – ¶ ] ¢ The magnific at ion level dif fers depend ing on [PICTURE SIZE] and the [ASPECT RA TIO] setting.
Basic - 54 - ∫ Exte nde d Opt ical Zoom mec h anism When you set the picture size to [ ] (3 million pixels), the 14M (14.1 million pixels) CCD area is cropped to the center 3M (3 million pixels) area, allowing a picture with a higher zoom effect. Note • The Digital Zoom cannot be set when õ or ¨ has been sel ected.
- 55 - Basic [PLA YBACK] Mode: ¸ Playing Back Picture s ([NORM A L PLA Y] ) • S peed of pic t ure forwarding /rewindin g chang es depending on the play back st atus. ∫ Fast forwarding/Fast rewi nding Press and hold 2 / 1 during playback. • The file number A and the pictur e number B only change one by one.

Basic - 58 - [PLA YBACK] Mode: ¸ Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the bu ilt -in memory or the card, that are being played back will be deleted . T o delete a single picture Select the picture to be deleted, a nd then press [ ‚ ].

Select [DELETE ALL] or [ ALL DELET E EXCEPT Ü ], press 3 to select [YES] and delete the pictures. ([ALL D ELET E EXCEP T Ü ] cannot be selected if no pictures have been set as [F A VORIT E].

- 61 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) ∫ Recording guideline When you align the subject on the horizon tal and vertical guidelines or the c ross point of these lines, you can take pictures with well-designed composition by viewing the size, the slope and the b alance of the subject.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 62 - [REC] Mode: ñ· ¿¨ T aking Pictur es using the Built-in Flash Set the flash to match the recording. Press 1 [ ‰ ].

Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 66 - ∫ Shutter speed f or each flash sett ing ¢ 1 It may vary depending on the [MIN. SHTR SPE ED] setti ng (P1 1 6) . ¢ 2 Wh en [MIN. SHTR S PEED] is set to [AUTO]. (P1 16) • ¢ 2: The shutter speed become s a maxi mu m of 1 sec ond in the following ca ses.

Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 68 - Y ou can take a pi cture with t he Digit al Zoom up to 3 k while maintaining the dist ance to the subject for the extreme Wide position [5 cm (0.17 feet)]. A Focus range • Focus range will be 5 cm (0.17 fe et) t o ¶ during M acro Zoom Mode regar dles s of the zoom posit ion.
- 69 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) [REC] Mode: ñ· ¿¨ T aking Pictur es with the Self-timer Note • When using a tr ipod etc., s etting the Self -timer to 2 seconds is a conve nien t way to avoid ji tt er caused by pre ssing the sh utter b utton.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 70 - [REC] Mode: ·¿ ¨ Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. Look at t he following examples.
- 71 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) [REC] Mode: ·¿ T aking Pictur es Using Auto Bracket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatic all y recorded in the s elected Exposure Compensation range each time the shutter button is pressed. Y ou can select the picture with the desired exposure from the 3 p ictures with different exposures.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 72 - [REC] Mode: T ake more e ffective out door pictures By setting the Mode dial to [ ], [ ], or [ ] , pictures can be taken more effectively matching the conditions such as sports, snow , beach & surf.

Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 74 - [REC] Mode: ¿ T aking Pictur es that Match the Scene B eing Recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode t o match the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtain the desired picture.
- 75 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) When taking pictures of people outdoors during t he day , t his Mode allows y ou to improve the appearance of the persons and mak e their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique fo r Portrait Mo de T o make this Mode M ore effective: 1 Press and hold down the zoo m lever as far as possible to T ele.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 76 - Select this to take pictures of yo urself. ∫ T echnique fo r Self Portr ait Mode • Press the shu tter butt on halfway to focus. The Sel f-timer indicator lights up when you are brought into focu s. Mak ing sure you hold the camera still, press the shutter but t on fully to take the picture.
- 77 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) Y ou can take pictures with connections suitable for creating panorama images. ∫ Sett ing the recor di ng dire cti on 1 Press 3 / 4 to select the recording direction and then press [MENU/SET]. • The horizont al/vertical gui deline will be displayed.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 78 - This Mode allows you to take pictures of a person and the background with near real-life brightness. ∫ T echnique for Ni ght Port rait Mo de • Use the flash. (Y ou can set to [ ‹ ]. ) • Ask the sub j ect not to mov e while tak i ng a pic ture.
- 79 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) This Mode allows y ou to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc. Note • The foc us range is 5 cm (0.17 feet) (Wide)/ 30 cm (0.99 feet) (T ele) to ¶ .
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 80 - This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you us e the flash, the light from it is weaker t han usual.
- 81 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) Select this when you want to t ake pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’ s birthday and name. Y ou can select to have these appear at the time of playback, or have them stamped on t he recorded image using [TEXT ST AMP] (P140) .
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 82 - This is a c onvenient Mode for shooting rapid move ment or a decisive moment. ∫ Picture size a nd aspect ratio 1 Press 3 / 4 to select [SPEED PRI ORITY] o r [IMAGE PRIORI TY] and the n press [MENU/SET] to set. 2 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the picture size and aspect ratio and then press [MENU/ SET] to set.
- 83 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) S till pictures are taken continuously w ith flash. It is convenient to take continuous still pictures in dark places. ∫ Picture size a nd aspect ratio 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the picture size and aspect ratio and then press [MENU/ SET] to set.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 84 - This Mode allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sk y or a dark subject. ∫ Setting the shutter speed Select a shutte r speed of [15 SEC.] , [30 SEC.] or [60 SEC. ]. 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the numb er of seconds a nd then press [M ENU/SET].
- 85 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) This Mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window . ∫ T echnique fo r Aerial Pho to Mode • We reco mme nd us ing this techniq ue if it is diff icult to focus when taking pic tures of cl ouds etc.
Advanced ( Recording pictures) - 86 - Y ou can use this Mode to easily record pictur es in which bright and dark regions of the scene are expressed with suitable brightness w hen looking into the sun, at night, or in similar circumstances. ∫ Setting the effect 1 Press 3 / 4 to select the effect to use, and then press [MENU/SET].
- 87 - Advanced ( Recording pictures) This Mode is optimal for taking pictures underwat er deeper than 3 m (10 feet). Use the marine case (DMW-MCFT2; optional) when taking pictures underwater deeper than 10 m (33 feet). ¢ This camera has a waterp roof/dust proof funct ion equivale nt to "IP68".
