The lens hood reduces the inclusion of unwanted light in the recorded images and lowers the drop in contrast. The lens hood cuts of f exce ss lighting and improves the picture quality .

2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 28 ∫ About the [ CHARGE] indicator • When the [CHARGE] indicator flashes – The bat tery te mperature is to o high or too low . It is recommen ded to charge the bat t ery again in an ambient t emperat ure of between 10 o C and 30 o C (50 o F and 86 o F).

G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 34 Access to the card The access indication displays red when pictures are being recorded on the card. • During access ( i mage writi ng, reading an d deleting, for matting etc. ), do not turn th is unit off, remove the battery , card or di sconnect the AC ad aptor (optional).
35 2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations Opening the Monitor/Adjusting the Monitor At the time when this cam era is purc hased, the monitor is stow ed in the cam era body . Bring out the monitor as shown below . 1 Open the monitor . (Maximum 180 o ) 2 It can be rotated 180 o forward.
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 36 Setting Date/T ime (Clock Set) • The cloc k is not set when the ca m era is shipp ed. 1 T urn the camera on. • The status indicator 1 lights when you turn this unit on. • If the language s elect scr een is no t displayed , proceed to step 4 .

When you play back the re cording, the recording is automatically displayed in vertical orient ation.
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 40 • When the imag e is correctl y focused, the picture wi ll be t aken, since the [Focus/ Release Priori ty] (P307 ) is set initi ally t o [FO CUS ]. • The f ocus range is diff erent de pending on the lens used.
41 2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations Rotate the mode dial to switch the Recording Mode. Press the m ode dial lock button 1 to releas e the lock. • The dial is lock ed if the mode dia l lock butt on is depressed . Each p ress locks/ unlocks the dial.

G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 42 Rotatin g: Selection of items or setting of values is performed during the various settings. • This owner’s manual desc ribes operatio ns of the rear dial/ front dial as follows: Allows you to set the aperture, s hutter speed, and other settings w hen in / / / modes.

53 2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations Calling frequently -used menus inst antly (Quick Menu) By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings c an be easily found. • The feature s that can be adju sted usi ng Quick Menu are determined by the mode or a display style the camera is in.

57 2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations It is possible to enter babies’ and pets’ names and the locations when recor ding. When a scr een that looks like t he one on the right is displayed, you can enter charact ers. (Only alphabetical charact ers and symbols can b e entered.
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 58 Configuring basic settings of this unit (Setup Menu ) Format the card b efore reco rding a picture with t his unit. Since data can not be recovered af ter formatting, make sure to back up necessary data in advance.

(P54) • Press the s hutter but ton halfway or turn the ca mera off and on to cancel [ Sleep Mode]. • T o turn th e monitor/viewf inder on again, press any button or to uch the monitor .
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 60 The [Setup] menu contains some important settings relating to the camera’ s clock and power . Check the se ttings of this menu before proceeding to u se the camera. For details on how to select the [ Setup] m enu settings, refer to P54 .

G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations • The number of days that have p assed since the dep arture dat e can be printe d out using th e “ PHOTOfunS TUDIO ” bundled sof tware on the DVD (supplied). • The tra vel date is calculat ed using the date in the clock se tting and the dep arture date you s et.

G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 62 • The [E-Shut ter V ol] only works when [SH] for Burst Mod e or [Electronic Shutt er] is set to [ON]. • When [Sil ent Mode] is set to [ON], [Bee p V olume] and [Shutt er V ol.] is set to [OF F]. • When you co nnect the camera to a TV , the volume of the TV sp eakers does not change.

65 2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations [TV Connection] This sets how the unit connects to a television etc. [TV As pect ]: Set to match the type of TV . [16:9]: When connecting to a 16:9 screen TV . [4:3]: When connecting to a 4:3 screen TV . • This will work when the A V cable (optional) is connec ted.
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 66 [TV Connection] [3D Playback]: Set the output method for 3D pictures. [] : Set w hen connecting to a 3D compatible television. [] : Set when connecting to a television not compatible with 3D. Set this when y ou would like to v iew pictures in 2D (conventional image) on a 3D compatible t elevision.

G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations • If you set a di fferent language by mis take, s elect [ ~ ] from the menu icons to set the des ired language. • This enables the firmware v ersions of the camera and lens to be checked . • Press [MENU/S ET] on the ver sion displa y screen to displ ay informat ion about the soft ware on the unit.
2. G etting Starte d/Basic Op erations 68 • Always reset the camera when disposing or se lling it to prevent person al information saved within the camera from being misused . • Always res et the camera after making a copy of pe rsonal informa tion when sending the camera in to be r epair ed.
69 3 . Easy Rec ording T aking Pictur es using the Automatic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) In this mode, the camera makes the optimal settings for the subject and scene, so we recommend it when you wish t o leave the settings t o the cam era and rec ord without thinking about them.
3. Ea sy Recording 70 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ¦ ]. • The camera will switch to either the most re cently used of Intellige nt Auto Mode or Intellige nt Auto Plus Mode. At the time of purch ase, the mode is set to Intelligent Auto Plus Mode. (P7 6) 2 Align th e screen with the su bject.
71 3. Ea sy Recording ∫ Auto Focus, Face/Eye Detection , and Face Recognition The Auto Focus M ode is automatically set to [ š ] . If you touch the sub ject, the AF tracking function will work. T he AF tracki ng function will also work if you pres s [ ] and then press the shutter button halfway .

Ea sy Recording 72 When [iHandheld Night Shot] is set to [ON] and [ ] is detected while taking ha ndheld night shots, pictures of the night scenery will be taken at a high burst speed and composed into a single picture. This mode is usef ul if you want t o take stunning night s hots with minimal jitter and noise, without using a tripod.
73 3. Ea sy Recording When [iHDR] is set to [ON] and there is, for example, strong contrast between the background and t he subject, multiple still pict ures are recor ded with dif f ering exposures and combined to create a single still pic ture rich in gradation.
3. Ea sy Recording 74 Y ou can easily set the blurriness of t he background while check ing the screen. 1 Press [Fn4] to display the setting screen. 2 Set the blurriness by rot ating the rear dial. • If you pr ess [MENU/SET] , you can retur n to the recording scree n.
75 3. Ea sy Recording This mode enables you to change the brightness and color tone to your pref erred settings from the ones set by the camera. 1 Press [ ]. 2 Rotate th e rear dial to adjust brightness. • Press [ ] agai n to return to the recordin g screen.

3. Ea sy Recording 80 For details on “Creative Con trol Mode” set tings, refer to P77 . This effect emphasizes the color to make a pop art picture. This effect gives a faded im age. This ef fect adds a bright, soft and nostalgic feel to t he overall image.
81 3. Ea sy Recording This effect adds a dark and relaxing feel to the overall image an d enhances bright parts. This effect creates a sepia image. This ef fect creates a black and white picture. This effect gives a higher contrast to c reate an impres sive black and white picture.
3. Ea sy Recording 82 This effect creates a black and white picture with gran ular noise. This effect blurs the overall ima ge to add a s oft feel to a black and white picture.
83 3. Ea sy Recording This effect produces the opt imum brightness for both d ark and bright parts. This effect gives your photo a dramatic c olor look.
3. Ea sy Recording 84 This ef fect creates a vivid and bright image with t he look of a toy camera. This effect gives a higher contrast and a lower sa turation to create a calm and tranquil pict ure.
85 3. Ea sy Recording This effect blurs peripheral areas to give the imp ression of a diorama. ∫ Setting the type of defocu s With [Miniature Effect] you can make the subject stand out by intentionally creat ing defocused and in-focus portions.
3. Ea sy Recording 86 This effect blurs the overall ima ge to produce a soft feel. This effect creates a fantastical image in a pale color tone. This effect transforms pin-points of light into a star effect.

3. Ea sy Recording 90 Y ou can easily optimize the brigh tness for a touched position. When the face of the subject appears dark, you can brighten the screen according to the brightness of t he face. ∫ Canc eling the T ouch AE funct ion T ouch [ ] .
91 4 . Focus and S hutter (Drive Mode) Settings T aking Pictures with Auto Focus By setting the optimum Focus Mode or Auto Focus Mode for the subject or recording condition, you can let t he camera aut omatically adjust focu s in various sc enes. 1 Set the focu s mode lev er to [AFS/AFF] or [AFC].
4. Foc us and Shutt er (Drive Mode ) Setti ngs 92 • If you zoom in/ out af ter focusin g on a subject, t he focus may lose its accur acy . In that case, re-adju st the focu s. • When the Fo cus Mo de is set to [A FF] or [A FC] . – A beep will be emitted when focus is first achieved during the pressing ha lf way .
93 4. Foc us and Shutt er (Drive Mode ) Setti ngs The method for achieving focus when the shutter button i s pressed halfway is set. Set the focu s mode lev er to [AFS/AFF] or [AFC].
4. Foc us and Shutt er (Drive Mode ) Setti ngs 94 • When the brightness is insuf ficient for [AFF] or [AFC] , the camera will o perate as if [AFS] has been set. In this case, the display wil l change to the ye llow [AFS]. • Depending on th e lens used, [AFF] and [AFC] may not ope rate.
