19 Before Use Function lever can be used in 2 ways, for zoom operations (P124) and for E xposure Compensation (P138) . Move the lever t o left or right to operat e. T o assign a function to the Function Lever Y ou can assign a function to the f unction lever .
20 Before Use About the Lens ∫ Micro Four Thirds ™ mount specificati on le n s This unit can use the dedicated lenses compatible with the Micro Four Thirds System lens mount specification (Micro Four Thirds mount).
21 Pre p ar ati on Changing the Lens By changing the lens, you will incr ease your pictur e taking-options and further y our enjoyment of the camera. Change the lens using the f ollowing procedure. • Check th at t he camera is turned of f. • Change lense s where there is not a lot of dirt or dus t .
22 Prepara tion While pres sing on the lens re lease button B , rot ate the lens toward the a rrow until it sto ps and then re move. Det achi ng the lens Preparations: Attach t he lens cap.
23 Prepara tion When recording into s trong backlight, irregular reflection may occur within the lens. The lens hood reduces the inclusion of unwanted light in the recorded images and lowers the drop in contrast. The lens hood cuts of f exce ss lighting and improves the picture quality .
24 Prepara tion Att aching the Shoulder Strap • We recom mend att aching the shoulder strap when us in g the camera to prevent it fr o m dropping. 1 Pass th e shoulder strap th rough th e shoul der strap eyel et on the camera body .

26 Prepara tion ∫ About the [ CHARGE] indicator The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns on: The [CHARGE] indicator is turned on during charging. The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns off: The [CHARGE] indicator will t urn off once the charging has completed without any problem.

29 Prepara tion ∫ Playback • The operating time s and number o f recordable pi ctures will differ a ccording to the environment and the operating conditions. For example, in the followin g cases, the operat ing time s shorten and the number of rec ordable pictures is redu c ed.
30 Prepara tion Inserting and Removing th e Card (optional)/ the Battery • Check that t his unit is turned of f. • We reco mmend us ing a Panaso nic card. 1 Slide the r elease l ever in the direction of the arrow and open the card/ba ttery door . • Always use genui ne Panasonic batter ies.
31 Prepara tion • Remove the bat tery af ter use. (T he batter y will be exha usted if l eft fo r a long period of time af ter being charg ed.) • The battery becomes warm af ter using it and during and af ter charging. The camera also becomes w arm during us e.
32 Prepara tion About the Card The following cards which conform to the SD standard can be used with this unit. (These cards are indicated as card in t he tex t.) ∫ About the motion picture recording and SD speed cl ass Confirm the SD Speed Class (the speed standard regarding continuous w riting) on a card label etc.

36 Prepara tion Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The cloc k is n ot set when the ca m era is ship p ed. 1 T u rn the camera on. • The stat us indi c a to r 1 lights when you turn this unit on. • If the languag e select sc reen is no t dis played, p roceed t o step 4 .
37 Prepara tion Select [Clock Set] in the [Setup ] menu. (P 38) • The clock can be reset as shown in steps 5 and 6 . • The cloc k setting is m aint ained for 3 months using the bui lt-in cl o ck batter y even without the battery . (Leave the charged battery in the unit for 24 hours to ch arge the built-in battery .
38 Prepara tion Setting the Menu This camera offers menu selections that allow you t o customize its operation to maximize your picture taking experience. In particular , the [Setup] menu contains some important settings relating t o the camera’s clock and power .
39 Prepara tion Menu Description of settings [Rec] (P172 to 191) This menu lets you set the a spect ratio, number of pixels a nd other aspects of the pict ures you are recording. [Moti o n Pict u r e ] (P200 to 202) This menu lets you set the [Rec Format], [Rec Q uality], and other aspects for motion picture recording.
40 Prepara tion • There are f unction s that cann ot be set or used depen ding on t he modes or men u setting s being used on the c amera due to the sp ecificati ons. 4 T ouch the Setting to se t. • Dependi ng on t he menu item, its settin g may not appear or it may be displayed i n a dif ferent way .

42 Prepara tion Y ou can set the background for the menu screen according to y our preferences. Y ou can also set one of the recorded still images as the background on the top menu screen. 1 Press [MENU/SET] to display the top menu. 2 T ouch [Backgroun d Im a ge ] .
43 Prepara tion Calling frequently-used m enus instantly (Quick Menu) By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings c an be easily found. • The feature s that can be adju sted using Quick Menu are determi ned by the mode or a display style the camera is in.
44 Prepara tion • Y ou can also set items by pre ssing the cu rsor buttons 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 . • Y ou can also selec t the settin gs by moving t he func tion lever . Switching t he method fo r setting Quick Menu items [MENU] > [Custom] > [Q.MENU] [PRESET] : Items that have been selected in a dvance can be set.
45 Prepara tion When [Q.MENU] (P44) in the [Custom] menu is set to [CUSTOM], the Quick Menu can be changed as desired. Up to 10 items can be set to the Quick Menu. 1 T ouch [ ]. 2 Select the men u in the t op row a nd drag it to the bottom row. A Items t hat can be setup as Quick Menus.
46 Prepara tion Assigning frequently use d functions to the buttons (function buttons) Y ou can assign recording functions, etc. to s pecific buttons and icons. T o use those functions, press [F n1] or [Fn2] or touch [Fn3] or [Fn4]. 1 Select the function b uttons you want to assign th e function from th e [Fn Button Set] in the [Custo m] menu.
47 Prepara tion • Some functi o ns cannot be us ed depend ing on the mode or displa yed screen. • When [Rest ore to Default] is set, func tion but t on settings return t o the default co nfiguratio n. Not available in these cases: • In [Miniat ure Ef fect], [One Poin t Colo r] and [Sunshine] of Crea tive Contro l Mode, [Fn1 ] c annot be used.
48 Prepara tion Configuring basic settings of this unit (Setup Menu) For details on how to select the [ Setup] menu settings, refer to P38 . [Clock Set] and [ Economy] are impo rtant item s. Check their se ttings before using them. • Refer to P3 6 for details.
49 Prepara tion • The number of day s that have p assed sin c e the dep arture dat e can be printe d out using th e “ PHOTOfunS T UDIO ” bundled sof tware on the CD-ROM (supplie d). • The tra ve l date is calculat ed using the da te in the clock se tting and the departure date you set.
50 Prepara tion • When yo u connec t the camera to a TV , the volume of the TV s peakers does not ch ange. • Some subject s may appear diff erentl y from actua lity on th e monitor .

52 Prepara tion [Output] This sets how the unit connects to a television etc. [TV Aspect]: Set to match the type of TV . [16:9]: When connecting to a 16:9 screen TV . [4:3]: When connecting to a 4:3 screen TV . • This will work when the A V cable (optional) is connect ed.

54 Prepara tion • If you set a di f ferent language by mis t ake, select [ ~ ] from the menu ic on s to set th e d es ire d language. • This enables the firmwar e v ersions of the camera and l ens to be checked . • [–. –] is di sp layed as the lens firmware when th e lens is not mou nted.

56 Prepara tion Entering T ext It is possible to enter babies’ and pets’ names and the locations when recording. When a screen that looks like the one on the right is displayed, you can enter ch aracters. (Only alphabetical characters and symbols can be entered.

60 Basic Just by touc hing the subject you want as your point of focus, the camera will focus on the subject and take the picture automatically . ∫ T o cancel the T ouch Shutter fu nction T ouch [ ] . • If shootin g with the touc h shutt er fa ils, the AF area turns red and di sappears.
61 Basic Recording Motion Picture This camera can record full high definition motion pictures compatible with the A VCHD format or motion pictures recorded in MP4. Audio will be recorded in stereo. 1 St art recor ding by pr essin g the moti on pict ure button.

63 Basic Displaying/not displaying the histogram Position can be set by dragging the histogram. • A histogr am is a graph that displays brigh t ness al ong t he horizont al axis (black to white) and the numbe r of pi x els at each brightnes s level on the vertic al axis.

65 Basic Using the Pl ayback Zoom Enlarging (or re ducing) a picture by pi nching out (or pinching in) (P16) the scr e en. • Y ou can al so enlar ge/reduce the pic ture by moving the functio n lever . • When you chang e the magnif ication, the zoom posit ion indic ation A appears for about 1 second.
66 Basic • The recording date of the pic ture sele ct ed in the playbac k screen bec ome s the date selected when the Calenda r screen is first dis played. • If th ere are mult ipl e p ictur es wit h th e same re cordin g d ate , th e f irst p ictur e r ecorde d o n t hat day is displayed.
67 Basic This unit was designed to play motion pict ures using the A VCHD, MP4 and QuickTime Motion JPEG formats. In Playbac k Mo de, s elect a picture with the moti on picture ico n ([ ]) and touch [ ] in th e middle of the screen.

71 Basic Displaying/not displaying white saturated areas [MENU] > [Custom] > [Highlight ] > [ON]/[ OFF] When the Auto Review function is activated or when playing back, white saturated areas appear blinking in black an d white. This does not affect the recorded image .
72 Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Picture s t hat are not in the DCF standa rd or those th at are protec ted cann ot be deleted. ¢ Picture group s are tre ated as a single pict ure. (Al l the pictur es in the sele c ted pictur e group will be deleted.
73 Basic • Do not turn th e camera of f while de let ing. Use a batt ery with suf ficient battery powe r or the AC adaptor (op tional). • Depending on th e number of pictures to be de leted, it may take some time to delete t hem. 3 (When [Dele te Multi] is selected ) T ouch the picture to b e deleted.

75 Recording Creative Video Mode (P198) Records motion pictures with a manually set aperture value and shutter speed. ¢ Y ou canno t take still picture s. Custom Mode (P120) Use this mode to take pictures wit h previously registered settings. Panoram a Sho t Mode (P95) This mode allows you to take panorama pictures.

78 Recording T aking Pictures using the Automatic Functio n (Intelligent Auto Mode) Recor ding Mode : In this mode, the camera makes the optimal settings for the subject and scene, so we recommend it when you wish to leav e the settings to the came ra and record without thinking about them.
79 Recording ∫ Scene Detection When takin g pictures ¢ 1 Only when [ ] (AUTO) is selected. ¢ 2 When [Face Recog.] is set to [ON], [ ] will be displayed f or birthdays of regi stered face s alread y set only when the fa c e of a perso n 3 ye ars old or younger is detect ed.
80 Recording ∫ About the flash Flash mode is set to [ Œ ] when the flash is closed, and [ ] (AUTO) when it is open. When the flash is open, the cam era automatically sets [ ], [ ] (A UTO/Red-Eye Reduction), [ ], or [ ] to match the type of subject and brightness.
81 Recording Depending on the scene that is automatically identified, it may be possible to select from a number of different image effects (filters) aut omatically r ecommended by the c amera, with reference to example images. (Only available when [Recommended Filter] on the recording menu is set to [ ON].

83 Recording • On the Defocus Cont rol setti ng screen of In te lligent Auto ( or ) Mode, the AF Mode is [ Ø ]. Y ou can set the locati on of t he AF area by to uching t he sc reen.
84 Recording Recor ding Mode : This mode enables you to change the brightness and color tone to your pref erred settings from the ones set by the camera in Intelligent Auto Mode. 1 Press [MENU/SET] when in Intelligent Au to Mode. 2 To u c h [ i A M O D E ] .

86 Recording T aking Pictures with Y ou r Favorite Settings (Program AE Mod e) Recor ding Mode : The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various s ettings in the [ Rec] menu.
87 Recording Displaying/not displaying the exposure meter [MENU] > [Custom] > [Exp o.Meter] > [ON]/[ OF F] • Set to [ON] to disp l ay th e [Exp o.M ete r] whe n corr ect i ng exposure, performing Prog ram Shift , setting ape rture, and setting sh utter spe ed.
88 Recording In Program AE Mode, you can change the pres et aperture value and shutter speed without changing the exposure. This is called Program Shif t. Y ou can make the background mor e blurred by decreasing t he aperture value or record a moving subject more dynamically by slowing the shu tter speed wh en taking a picture in Program AE Mode.
89 Recording T aking Pictures by Specifying the Apertu re/ Shutter Speed Recor ding Mode : Set the aperture value to a higher num ber when you want a sha rp focus background. S et the aperture value to a lower number when you want a soft focus background.
90 Recording When you want t o take a sharp picture of a fa st moving su bject, set with a f aster shutter speed. When you want to cr eate a trail effect, set to a slower shutter s peed. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Rot ate the control dial to s et the shutter speed .
91 Recording Determine the exposure by manually setting the aper ture value and t he shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of the screen to indicate the exposure. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Rot ate the control dial to s et the aperture valu e and shut te r spe ed .
92 Recording Manual Exposure A ssistance • The Manual Expo s ure Assi s tanc e is an approxima ti on. We recommend ch ec king the pic tures on the playb ac k screen. • The bright ness of the sc reen and th e recorded pict ures may differ . Check the pictures on the playback scre en.
93 Recording Applicable modes: The effects of aperture and shu tter speed c an be checked by using the P review Mode . • Confirm the effect s of aperture: Y ou can check t he dep th of field (ef fecti ve focus ran ge) before t akin g a pi c ture by clo s ing th e leaf s hutte r to the apertu re value you set.
