- 13 - Prepar ation • Charge the ba ttery in areas w ith an ambie nt temperatu re, betwee n 10 o C and 30 o C (50 o F and 86 o F ) (same as the bat tery temper ature), is reco mmended.
- 14 - Prepar ation ∫ About the ch arging lamp ∫ Cha rging tim e When using the A C adaptor (sup plied) • The indicated charging ti me is for when the battery has been di scharged completely . The charging time may vary depend ing on how the b attery has be en used.
- 15 - Prepar ation • Do not leave any metal items (suc h as clip s) near the co nta ct areas of the po wer plug. Otherwise, a fire and/or electric shocks m ay be caused by short-circuiting or the resulting heat genera ted.

- 18 - Prepar ation Inserting and Removing t he Card (optional) • Che ck that thi s unit is turned off. • We rec ommend us ing a P anasonic car d. 1 Slide the r elease le ver in the direction of the arrow and open the card/ battery door .
- 19 - Prepar ation About the Built-in Memory/ the Card • Y ou can copy the record ed pictures t o a card. ( P121) • Memory size: Approx. 70 MB • The access time fo r the built -in memory may be lo nger tha n the a ccess time f or a c ard. The following cards, which conform to the SD st andard, can be used with this unit.
- 20 - Prepar ation • During acce ss (image wri ting, readi ng and dele ting, formatti ng etc.), do not turn thi s unit off, remove the ba ttery , card or di sconnect the AC adaptor (supplied). Furthe rmore, do n ot subject the cam era to vibrati on, imp act or static el ectrici ty .
- 21 - Prepar ation ∫ About the displ ay of the nu mber of recordab le pictures and av ailable recording time ∫ Number of recordable pictures • [ i 99999 ] is displaye d if there are more t han 100,000 pictures remain ing.
- 22 - Prepar ation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. 1 Press came ra [ON/OFF] button . • If the lang uage select sc reen is not displa yed, proceed t o step 4 . 2 Press [MENU/SET]. 3 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the langua ge, and press [MENU/SET].
- 23 - Prepar ation Select [Clock Set] on the [Setup] menu and then press [MENU/S ET]. (P41) • The clock can be reset as shown in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting is m aintained for about 14 days using the built-in clock battery even without the battery .

- 25 - Basic Selecting the Recording Mode ∫ List of Recording M odes • If you keep rot ating the mode dial, screens may switch slower . Switching the mode by rot ating the mode dial. • Rota te the mode dial slowl y to select the desired mode. Align a desired mode with part A .
- 26 - Basic T aking pictures using the automa tic function (Intelligent Auto Mode) Recording Mode: The camera will set the m ost appropriate settings to match the s ubject and the recording conditions so we recomm end this mode for beginners or those who want to leave the s ettings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 27 - Basic 2 Press th e shutter b utton half way to focu s. • The focus i ndication A (green) ligh ts when the subject is focused . • The AF area B is display ed aroun d the s ubject ’s f ace by the Fa ce Detect ion func tion. I n other ca s es, it is displ ayed at the point on th e subject which is in focus.
- 28 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum s cene, the icon of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 se conds, after which its color c hanges to the usual red. - 29 - Basic When there is a backlight, the su bject appears dark er and the c amera will automat ically attempt to correct it by increasing the brightness of the picture. In Intelligent Auto Mode, backlight compensation works automatically . (Depending on the backlighting conditions, backlighting may not be detected correctly .
- 30 - Basic ∫ [Motion D eblur] When [Motion Deblur] is set to [ ON], [ ] is displayed on the recording screen. The camera automatically sets an optimal shutter speed acc ording to the motion of the subject to reduce blur on the subject. • It is initial ly set to [ON] o n the camer a.
- 31 - Basic T aking Pictures with Y ou r Favorite Setting s (Program AE Mod e) Recording Mode: The camera automatically sets the shutter s peed and the aper ture value accor ding to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can t ake pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [ Rec] menu.
- 32 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area at the subj ect, and then press the shutter b utton halfway . • The AF area may be disp layed larger for certain z oom magnificat ions and in dark plac es. ∫ About focus range The focus range is displayed w hen operating the z oom.
- 33 - Basic ∫ When the su bject is not in focus (su ch as w hen it is n ot in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the subject, and press the shutter button h alf way to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button half way while moving the camera as you compose the picture.

- 35 - Basic • Depending on the typ e of the ca rd, the c ard access indicatio n may appea r for a while after recording motion pict ures. This is no t a malfunction. • The screen may be bla cked out moment arily , or the unit may reco rd noise due to st atic elect ricity or electroma gnetic waves etc.
- 36 - Basic S t ill pictures can be recorded even while recording a motion picture. (Simultaneous recording) During motion picture rec ording, press the shutter button fully to reco rd a still picture. • The picture is sa ved with the following c onditions .
- 37 - Basic Playing Back 1 Press [ ( ]. ∫ Playing Back Motion Pi ctures Press 2 / 1 to select a picture with a Motion Picture icon (such as [ ]), and then press 3 to play back. - 39 - Basic Y ou can create a single st ill picture from a recorded motion picture. 1 Press 3 to pa use motion p icture playback. 2 Press [MENU/SET]. • Confirmatio n screen is displayed .
- 40 - Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictu res cannot be recovered . • Pictures on t he built- in memory or the card that are being playe d back will be deleted . • Pictures th at are not in the DCF st andard or th ose that are protect ed cannot be deleted.
- 41 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to cho ose the set tings for taking pictures and playing them back jus t as you like and menus that enable you to hav e more fun with the camera and us e it more eas ily .
- 42 - Basic ∫ Close the menu Press [ ] repeatedly until th e recording/ playback screen is displayed. • When record ing images, you can also close th e menu by pressing the shu t ter bu tton ha lfway .

- 45 - Basic • Refer to P85 for details . • Some subjec ts may appe ar diff erently fr om actualit y on the monitor . However , this doe s not aff ect the record ed pictures. [Airplane Mo de] Restricts Wi -Fi se ttings. [ON]: Wi-Fi functions cannot be used.
- 46 - Basic • The brightnes s of the pictures displayed on t he monitor is incre ased so some subjec ts may app ear diff erent from real life on the monito r. Howev er , this does not af fect the recorded pic tures. • When [Moni tor Luminanc e] is set, th e usage time is redu ced.

- 48 - Basic • [Auto Rev iew] is activa ted regardles s of its set ting in the followi ng cases. – When using Au to Brack et – When using [ Burst]. • [Auto R eview] do es not work whe n recording motion pi ctures. • When the setup s ettings are reset, the following set tings are also re set.
- 49 - Basic • When you play back pictur es on a PC, they ca nnot be displ ayed in the rot ated direction unle ss the OS or software is compat ible with Exif. Exif is a file format for still pictures which allows recordin g informatio n etc. to be added.
- 50 - Basic • Press [MENU/S ET] on the version dis play screen to display infor mation about the software on t he unit. • Do not tu rn the ca mera off during fo rmat ting. • If a card has bee n inserted, only the card is for matted. T o format the built -in memory , remove the car d.
- 51 - Recording T aking Pictures with Y ou rself Included ([Self Shot]) Appl ica ble mod es: If you rotate the monitor , Self Shot Mode is activated. Y ou can take pictures while looking at the screen, allowing you t o include you rself in them easily .
- 52 - Recording 2 Press [MENU /SET] to set the sof t skin effect, the number of pictures to b e ta ken, an d other det ails. • Operate the buttons on the back of the unit while looking at the screen. Be careful not to operate the wro ng buttons and not to drop the camer a.
- 53 - Recording ∫ Changin g the sett ings of Sel f Shot Mode from the [Rec] menu 1 Rot ate t he moni tor to it s orig inal po sition. 2 Select [Self Shot] o n the [Rec] menu and then press [ME NU/SET]. (P41) 3 Press 3 / 4 to select [SET] and then press [MENU/SE T].
- 54 - Recording Y ou can also take panorama pictures in Self Shot Mode. By recording with P anorama Shot M ode, you can enjoy a variety o f self-portraits, such as th ose with your friends or those incorporating a wide backgro und.
- 55 - Recording ∫ T echnique for Panorama Shot Mode • Since the dist ance between the ca mera and subject is clos e when y ou t ake p anorama pictur es in Self Shot Mod e, the edges of the pict ure s may appear signi ficantly distorted . Swivel the camera around its center when moving it in the recording direction.
- 56 - Recording About the Monitor Press [DISP .] to chang e. • During motion pic ture playback, panorama pla yback or a slide show , you can only sele ct “Normal Display ” or “No Display”.
- 57 - Recording Using the Zoom Appl ica ble mod es: Y ou can zoom in t o make people and objects appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. ∫ Screen display Example of display when Extended O ptical Zoom (E Z), Intelligent Zoom and Digital Zoom are used together .
- 58 - Recording This function work s when an y of the pictur e sizes (P88) indicated with is selected. Y ou can zoom in further t han you can with the Optical Zoom without deteriorating the ima ge quality . Maximum magnification: 45 k (This includes th e optical zoom mag nification.
- 59 - Recording T aking Pictures Using the Built-in Flash Appl ica ble mod es: Set the flash to match the recording. 1 Press 1 [ ‰ ]. Flash Do not cover it with your fingers or other objects.
- 60 - Recording 2 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the setting and then press [MENU/SET]. ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intelligent Auto Mode is set. The icon chan ges dependi ng on the typ e of subjec t and brightne ss. ¢ 2 The flash is activated twice. The subj ect should not move until the second flash is activ ated.

( ± : Available, —: Not available, ¥ : Scene Mode initial setting) ¢ [ ] is displayed . • When [ ] is select ed, [ ], [ ], [ ] or [ ] is set dependin g on the type of subject and brightness .
- 62 - Recording ∫ The available flash range (approximation) ∫ Shutter speed for each fl ash setting ¢ The shutt er speed changes depending on the [S tabilize r] setting. The shutt er speed becomes a ma ximum of 1 second i n the following cases. • When the Optical Image S tabilizer is set to [OFF].
- 63 - Recording T aking Close-up Pictures ([AF Macro]/[Macro Zoom]) Appl ica ble mod es: This mode allows you to take close-up pictures of a subject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. 1 Press 4 [ # ]. 2 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the item a nd then press [M ENU/SET].
- 64 - Recording T aking Pictures with the Self-time r Appl ica ble mod es: 1 Press 2 [ ë ]. 2 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the setting and then press [MENU/SET]. • This function is not available in the following cas es: – In Se lf S hot Mode (When ta king pict ures in Self Sh ot Mode, you can set the Self-t imer in [Count down].
- 65 - Recording Compensating th e Exposure Appl ica ble mod es: Use this function when you cannot achieve appr opriat e exposure d ue to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background.
- 66 - Recording T aking Pictures Using Auto Brack et Appl ica ble mod es: In this mode, 3 pic tures are aut omatically re corded in the selected exposure comp ensation range each time the shutter button is pressed. With Auto Brack et d 1E V • If you turn of f the camera, Auto Bracket will be canceled.
- 67 - Recording T aking Pictures by Specifying the Aperture/ Shutter Speed Recording Mode: Set the aperture value to a higher number when you want a sharp focus bac kground. Set the aperture value to a lower number when you want a sof t focus background.
- 68 - Recording Set with a faster shutter speed when y ou want to ta ke a sharp picture of a fast mov ing subject. Set to a slower shutter speed wh en you want to create a trail effect. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Press [EXPOSURE]. 3 Press 3 / 4 to s et the shutter s peed.
- 69 - Recording Determine the expos ure by manually s etting the aperture value and the shutter speed. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Press [EXPOSURE].
- 70 - Recording T aking panorama pictures (Panorama Shot Mod e) Recording Mode: Pictures are recorded continuously while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to m ake a single panorama picture. This mode allows you to add any of 13 types of effects before recording.
- 71 - Recording 6 Press th e shutter b utton fully an d record a picture while moving the camera in a small circ le in the direction sele cted in S tep 2 . 7 Press th e shutter b utton once ag ain to end the picture r ecording. • Recording can also be ended b y keeping t he camera st ill while r ecording.
- 72 - Recording • The zoom posit ion is fixed to Wide. • [S tabilizer] is fixed to [OFF]. • The focus , White Balance, and expos ure are fixed at the optimum value s for the fir st picture.
- 73 - Recording T aking pictures that match the sc ene being recorded (Scene Mode) Recording Mode: Y ou can select any of 16 types of Scene Modes according to the subject and scene. 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to selec t the Scen e Mode and then press [MENU/SET].
- 74 - Recording When taking pictures of people outdoors during the daytime, this mode allows y ou to improve the appearance and make their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Portrait Mode T o mak e this mode more effective: 1 Rotate the zoom lever as far as possible to T ele.
- 75 - Recording This allows you to take pictures of a per son and the background with near real-life brightness. • Use the flash. (Y ou can set to [ ].) • Ask the subj ect not to move while ta king a pict ure. • We recomme nd using a tripo d and the Self- timer for t aking pi ctures.
- 76 - Recording Y ou can combine several pictures with dif ferent levels of exposure into a single pict ure with rich gradation. Y ou can minimize t he loss of gradations in bright areas and dark areas when, for ex ample, the contrast between the backgr ound and the s ubject is la rge.
- 77 - Recording This takes pictures of a baby wi th a healthy complexion. It is possible to set di fferent birthdays and names for [Baby1] and [Baby2]. Y ou can select to have these appear at the time of playback, or have them stamped on the recorded image using [T ext S tamp] (P1 13) .
- 78 - Recording This mode minimizes the jitter of the subjects, and enables you to take pictures of these subjects in dimly lit rooms. ∫ Picture S ize Select the picture s ize of 3M ( 4:3), 2.5M (3: 2), 2M (16:9) or 2.5M (1:1). This mode allows you to take vivid pic tures of a starry sky or a dark subject.
- 79 - Recording T aking Pictures with different ima ge effects (Creative Control Mode) Recording Mode: This mode allows you to add any of 15 types of effects before recording. Y ou can set the effects to add by selecting exa mple images and c hecking them o n the s creen.
- 80 - Recording For details o n how to select the “Creative Control Mode” settings, refer to P79 . ¢ These pic tures are ex amples to s how the eff ect. This effect emphasizes the color t o make a pop art picture. This effect gives a faded image.
- 81 - Recording This effect adds a dark and relaxing feel to t he overall image and enhances bright parts. This effect creates a sepia image. This effect gi ves a higher contrast to create an impressive black and white picture. This effect gi ves your photo a dramatic contrast look.
- 82 - Recording This effect produces the optimum brightness f or both dark and bright part s. This effect gi ves your photo a dramatic color look. This effect reduces peripheral brightness to give the impression of a toy camera.
- 83 - Recording This effect blurs peripheral ar eas to give the im pression of a diorama. This effect blurs the overall image t o produce a soft feel. [Miniature Ef fect] Items that can be set Directi on of t he b lur Horizont al/V ertical • Press 2 / 1 to selec t the d irection of the bl ur , and press [MENU/S ET].
- 84 - Recording This effect transforms pin-points of light into a star effect. This effect l eaves one selected color to emphasize impressiveness . [St ar Filter] [One Point Color] ∫ Set the color to leave in 1 Fit the color you wan t to leave i n the frame at the center of the screen, and then press [MENU/SE T].
- 85 - Recording T aking Pictures in Custom Mode Recording Mode: Y ou can register the current camer a settings as custom s ettings. If you then record in Custom M ode, you can use the registered settings. • Initial setting of the Pro gram AE Mode is registered as the custom settings initia lly .
- 86 - Recording Y ou can easily call up the settings you have registered using [Cust.Set Mem.]. (When calling up a custom set registered for [ ]) Set the mode dial to [ ]. • The custo m set registere d for [ ] is called up . (When calling up a custom set registered for [ ]/[ ]/[ ]) 1 Set the mod e dial to [ ].
- 87 - Recording Entering T ext Y ou can enter the name of your baby or pet when taking pictures. In addition, you can ent er characters (comments) on t he pictures you have taken. When a screen that looks like the one on the right is displayed, you can enter characters.
- 88 - Recording Using the [Rec] Menu For det ails o n [Rec] menu se ttings , refer to P41 . Appl ica ble mod es: Set the number of pixels. The higher the numbers of pixels, the finer the detail of the pictures will appear even when they are printed onto large sheets.
- 89 - Recording Appl ica ble mod es: Set the compression rate at which the pictures are to be stored. • The settin g is fix ed to [ › ] in the f ollowing case. – [High Sens. ] (Scene Mode) • [Quality] cannot be set in the I ntelligent Aut o Mode.
- 90 - Recording Appl ica ble mod es: This allows the Sensitivity to light (ISO sensitiv ity) to be set. Setting to a higher figure en ables pictures to be taken even in dark places wi thout the resulting pictures coming out dark. • For th e focus ra nge of fl ash wh en [AUT O] is s et, refe r to P62 .
- 91 - Recording Appl ica ble mod es: In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in other s uch conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, this item adjusts to the color of white which is closest to what is seen by the eye in accordance with the light source.
- 92 - Recording ∫ Auto White Balance Depending on the conditions prevailing when pictures are taken, the pictures may take on a reddish or bluish tinge. Furthermor e, when a mult iple number of light so urces are being used or there is nothing with a color close to white, Au to White Balance may not function pro perly .
- 93 - Recording Y ou can finely adjust the W hite Balance whe n you cannot acquire the desired hue by setting the White Balance. • Fine adjus tment is poss ible only when t he White Balanc e is set to [ V ]/[ Ð ]/[ î ]/[ Ñ ]/[ Ò ]. 1 Select the White Balance to finely adjust and then press [DISP .
- 94 - Recording Appl ica ble mod es: This allows the focusing method that suits t he positions and number of the subjects to be selected. ¢ [ Ø ] will be used du ring motion pic ture recording. • The settin g is fix ed to [ š ] in th e following case.
- 95 - Recording ∫ About [ š ] ([Face Detection] ) The following AF area frames are displayed when t he camera det ects the face s. Y ellow: When the shutter button is pressed hal fway , the frame turns green when the camera is focused. White : Displayed when more than one face is detected.
- 96 - Recording ∫ Setting up [ ] ([ AF T racking]) Align the sub ject with the AF tracking frame, and th en press 4 to lock onto the subject.
