Preparation 11 Char ging the Ba tter y with the Charger When the c amera is shipped, the battery is not charged. Charge the battery before use . 1 Attach the b a ttery to the c harger . 2 Connect the A C cab le. • The AC cable does not fit entirely into the A C input terminal.

Preparation 13 Inserting /Remo ving the Bat tery • Check that the camer a is turned off and that the lens is retracted. • Close the flash. 1 Slide the car d/battery door to open it. • Please be sure to use genuine P anasonic batteries (CGA-S002E ).
Prepara tion 14 Inserting /Remo ving the Car d • C heck that the camera is tur ned off and that the lens is retracted. • C lose the flash. 1 Slide the c ard/ battery door to open it . • The card a nd the data ma y be damaged if it is i nserted or remo ved while the camera is on.
Preparation 15 About the Car d ∫ Access to the card While the card is being accessed (Recognizing/Recording/Reading/ Deleting), the c ard access indicati on 1 lights. When the c ard access indicat ion 1 lights, do not: • turn the camera off. • remov e the batter y or the c ard.

Prepara tion 18 Attach ing the Lens Hood In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts off excess lighting and improv es the picture quality . • C heck that the camera is tur ned off and that the lens is retracted.
Preparation 19 ∫ T emporaril y storing the len s hood 1 1 Remo ve the lens hood, re verse it and then adjust D on the lens hood to E on the lens hood adapt or . 2 Insert the lens h ood straight to the lens h ood adaptor . 3 Rotate the le ns hood counter -clock wise until it clic ks.
Prepara tion 20 Setting Date /Time (Cloc k Set) ∫ Init ial s ett ing The clock is not set w hen the camera is shipped. When you turn the camera on, the fol lowing screen appears. • When pressing the [MENU] button, the screen shown in step 2 appears.
Preparation 21 • When fully charged battery has been inser ted for more than 24 hours, the clock setting is stored (in the camera) f or at least 3 months ev en if the battery is remov ed. (The storing time may be shor ter if the b attery is not charged sufficiently .
Prepara tion 22 Setup Men u 1 T u rn the cam era on. 2 Press th e [MENU] b utton. • The menu screen in simple mode [ ] is different from the above screen. (P34) 3 Select the [SETUP] Menu. • When rotating the zoom le v er A tow ard T , t he page of the m enu screen can be forw arded.
Preparation 23 Y ou can control the f ollowing items on [SETUP] Menu. Menu F unctions MONIT O R/ FINDER Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor (when pictures appear on the LCD monitor) o r Viewfinder (when pictures a ppear on the Viewfinder) in 7 steps.
Prepara tion 24 Menu Funct ions BEEP Set to select the v olum e of operational sound. [] : No operational sound [] : Soft operational sound [] : Loud operational sound • The operational sound setting is also reflected on simple mode [] . SHUTTER Set to select the v olum e of shutter sound.
Preparation 25 Menu F unctions SCENE ME NU [OFF]: Scene menu does not appear whe n setting the m ode dial to scene mode and the camera is oper at ed in the scene mode currently selected. If you change the scene mode, press the [MENU] b utton to displa y the scene menu and then select the desired scene mode.
Prepara tion 26 About the L CD Monitor/Vi ewfinder 1 Switc hing the LCD m onitor/V iewfi nder Press the [E VF/LC D] butto n to switch to the screen you would like to turn on. A LCD monitor (LCD) B Viewfinder (EVF) • When the LCD monitor tur ns on, the Viewfinder turns off (and vice versa).
Preparation 27 ∫ Out-of-f rame display The recor ding inf or mation is display e d out of the recording screen, theref ore, you c an take pictures without interruption by icons or others on the recording screen. ∫ Diopter adjustm ent This feature is handy for users who w ear corrective lenses and prefer to use the Viewfinder .
Prepara tion 28 ∫ Histogram • A his togram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (b lack to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. • It allows the c amera user to easily chec k the wa y a picture is being e xposed.

Recording pictu res (basic) 31 ∫ AF/AE Lock (AF: Auto focus/ AE: Auto expos ure) When rec ording a picture of p eople with a composition as the abov e picture, you cannot focus on the subject because it is out of AF area in usual oper ation. In this case, 1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
Recording pictures (ba sic) 32 ∫ Focusing • The focus range is 30 cm – ¶ (W ide), 120 cm – ¶ (T ele). • If you press the shutter b utton fully without prefocusing, pictures ma y be b lurr y or unfocused. • When the focus indication is b linking, the subject is not f ocused.
Recording pictu res (basic) 33 • When you press the shutter b utton, the screen may become bright f or a moment. This function allows easy adjust ment of f ocus and the recorded picture will not be aff ected. • We recommend setting the clock again before taking pictures.

The subjects such as people become dar k when pictures are recorded in the backlight . If y ou press 3 , [ ] (compensating backlight ON indication) appears and t he backlight compensation functi on is activated.
Recording pictu res (basic) 37 Chec king the Reco rded Pic ture (Re v ie w) 1 Press 4 . • The last recorded picture appears f or about 10 seconds. • Press the shutter button halfw ay or 4 to cancel the re v iew . • Y ou can check the previous or follo wing picture with 2 / 1 .

Playback (basic) 49 Deleting Pic tures ∫ T o delete a single picture 1 Select the pic ture to be deleted. • 2 : Play back the prev ious picture. • 1 : Play back the next picture. 2 Del ete the p ictu re . • While deleting the picture, [ ] appears on the screen .

Recording pictures (ad vanced) 52 When you want to take a shar p picture of a fast mo v ing subject, set to a f ast er shutter speed. When you w ant to create a tr ail eff ect, set to slower shutter speed. 1 Set the shut ter speed and take the p ictu re .

(e.g. When taking pictures of flowers. ) Y ou can tak e pictures with the lens at a distance of up t o 5 cm (Wide) from the subject. ∫ Focus range • Normal • Macro mode [ ] • We recommend using a tripod.

Recording pictures (ad vanced) 60 This mode allows you to take a picture of a wide landscape. The camera f ocu ses on a distant subject pref erentially . • The focus range is 5 m – ¶ . • The ISO sensitivity is fi xed to [A UT O]. • The Flash setting is fix ed to F orced OFF [] .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 61 This mode allows you to take pictures against a night landscape. The subject can be recorded with brightness in real life b y using the flash and the slow shutter speed. ∫ T echnique for Ni ght portrait mode • Open the flash.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 62 • In panning mode, the shutter speed becomes slower than usual to achie ve the panning effect. As a result, jitter can easily occur . • Panning function does not work well in the follo wing situations. – V ery bright scenes such as daytime in summer .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 63 • When the auto f ocu s is activ a ted, the av ailable recording range is 5 m – ¶ . (We recommend follo wing steps 1 to 5 on the previous page to take pictures with prefocus . ) • The ISO sensitivity is fix ed to [ISO100] .
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 64 This mode allows you to t ake a pi cture in locations such as skiing grounds and locations near s nowy mountains. The ex posure and the wh ite balance are adjusted to make t he white colour of the snow stand out. • The ISO sensitivity is fi xed to [A UT O].
Recording pictu res (advanced) 65 Using the [REC] mode menu Setting the hue, picture quality adjustm ent, etc. allows you to creat e wide variations on taking pictures. • Set the mode dial to the desired recording mode. • When rotating the zoom lev er toward T , the page of the menu screen can be f orwarded.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 66 This function allows you to reproduc e a white colour closer to the tone in real life on the pictures reco rded under s unlight, halogen lighting, etc. i n which the white colour may appear reddish or bluish. • When setting the white balance to the mode except [A UTO], you can finely adjust the white balance .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 67 ∫ Setting the White Balan ce manually (Whit e set ) Use this mode when you w ant to set the white balance manually . 1 Set to [ ] (White Set) and t hen press 1 . 2 Aim the camera at a sheet of white paper or a similar w hite object so that t he frame on the centre of the screen turns white and then pres s 1 .
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 68 ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values. If you set the ISO sensit ivity higher , the camera becomes more suitable for recording in dark places. • When setting to [A UT O ], the ISO sensitivity is automat ically adjusted from [ISO80] to [ISO200] according to the brightness.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 69 Y ou can se lect 3 types of quality (compression rate) according to t he usage of the picture. • When the quality is set to [ TIFF], a JPEG picture with the quality equal to the standard is c reated at the same time.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 70 Y ou can s witch to the follo wing meter ing modes. Meteri ng Mo de [MET ERIN G MODE] Multiple: This is the m ethod in which the camera measures the most suitable ex posure by judging the allocation of brightness on the whole screen automatically .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 71 • When setting to 3- area-focusing, pictures may become still while being f ocus ed on, howe ver , th is is not a malf unction. • In the digital z oom or when y ou tak e pictures in dark places, the AF area is display ed on the cent er of the screen with a size wider than usual.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 72 When taking a picture with pref ocus, set the button f or star ting AF (Auto f o cus) to [FOCUS] o n [AF T RIGGER]. Prefocus is a technique to focus on the point where you t ake a picture of the subject with quic k motion.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 73 Illuminating the subject with the AF assist lamp allows the camera t o focus on the subject in low light conditions. When you press the sh utter button halfw a y in dark places or other situations, an AF area wider than usual appears and the AF assist lamp 1 turns on.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 74 It is possib le to further magnif y a subject already magnified 12 times with the optical zoom b y 4 more times with the digi tal zoom, thereby reaching a maximum of 48 times.

Recording pictures (ad vanced) 76 1 Select [FLIP AN IM.]. • A mot ion image file is created by put ting images recorded in [IMAGE CAPTURE] together by [CREA T E MOTION IMA GE]. • Audio cannot be recorded. • Y ou cannot record audio using the audio dubbing.

Playback (advan ced) 79 Usi ng t he [P LA Y] mode menu Y ou can rotate the recorded pictur es in increments of 90°. This is a conv enient function to play bac k pictures on T V . ∫ Example When rotating cloc kwise ( ) Original pic ture 1 Select [R OT A TE].
Playback (ad vanced) 80 • Still pictures can only be rotat ed in normal playbac k. When playing back rotated pictures in zoom playbac k or multi playbac k, pictures appear in original angle. • Prot ected pictures and pictures recorded with setting the quality to [ TIFF] cannot be rotated.
Playback (advan ced) 81 ∫ Singl e sett ing Select the pictur e and set the number of prints. • The number of prints can be set from 0 to 999. • The number of pr ints icon [ ] appears. • When the number of prints is set to “0”, DPOF print setting is cancelled.
Playback (ad vanced) 82 • D POF print se tting is a convenient function when you print pictures with printers suppor ting DPOF pr inting. (P95) • D POF is the abbre viation for Digital Print Order Format.
Playback (advan ced) 83 ∫ Multi setting/T o cancel all settings P erf orm the same operation as in [Setting the Picture to be P rinted and the Num ber of Pr ints [DPO F P RINT]]. (P8 0 – 8 1) • If you want to delete protected pictures, cancel the protect setting first.
Playback (ad vanced) 84 3 Select [ST ART]. 4 By pressing the [MENU] butto n, the Slide Sho w stops. ∫ SD S lide Sh ow If you inser t a card including the SD Slide Show edit ed with the [SD Vie wer f or DSC] which is in t he supplied CD-RO M, and then turn the camera on in pla yback mode, the confirmation screen appears.
Playback (advan ced) 85 Y ou can record the audio after taking a pict ure . 1 Select [A UDIO DUB.]. 2 Select the pic ture and s tart audio recor ding. • When audio has already been recorded, the confirmation screen appears. Press 4 to select [YES], and press 1 to s tar t audio record ing.
Playback (ad vanced) 86 This function is useful if you w ant to reduce the file siz e of the picture in cases when it needs to be attached to an e-mail or uploaded to a websit e. 1 Select [RESIZE]. 2 Select the picture and set it. • The f ollowing pictures cannot be resized.
Playback (advan ced) 87 4 Select [YES] or [NO] and set it. • When you select [Y ES], the picture is ov e rwritten. • When the original picture is protected, you cannot ov erwrite the resi zed picture. • It may not be possible to resize pictures recorded with other equipment.
Playback (ad vanced) 88 2 Select the picture to trim and s et it. • The f ollowing pictures cannot be trimmed. – Pictures sm aller than 640 k 480 pixels – Pictures rec orded after setting the pi.
Playback (advan ced) 89 1 Select [FORM A T ]. 2 Select [YES] to f ormat. • Usually , it is not necessar y to f or mat the card. F orm at the card when the message [MEMORY CARD ERR OR] appears. • If the card has been f or matted by a PC or other equipment, f orm at the card on t he camera again.
Playback (ad vanced) 90 Pla ying Bac k Pictures with a TV Sc reen ∫ Playing back pictures with A V cable (suppli ed) • T urn the camera and the TV off . 1 Connect the A V cabl e A (supplied) t o the [A V O UT/ DIGIT AL] socke t of the came ra. • Conn ect the A V cable with the [ ] mark facing y ou.
Connecting to a PC or Prin ter 91 Connecting to a PC o r Printer Befo re Connecting with USB Connectio n Cable [ : USB MODE] Select the USB communication system according to the OS of your PC or your printer before connecting them to the camera with the USB connection cable ( supplied).
Connectin g to a PC or P rinter 92 ∫ When using Windows 98/98 SE When using Windows 98/ 98 SE, install the USB driver before connecting.
