Prepara tion 10 Quic k Guide This is the ov er view of the procedure to record pictures with this camera. For each operation, be sure to ref er to the corresponding pages. 1 Char ge the battery . (P11) • When the camera is shipped, the battery i s not c harged.
Preparation 11 Char ging the Ba ttery with the Charger When the c amera is shipped, the battery is not charged. Charge the battery before use . 1 Attach the b a ttery to the c harger . 2 Connect the A C cable. • The AC cable does not fit entirely into the A C input terminal.

Preparation 13 Inserting /Remo ving the Battery • Check that the camer a is turned off and that the lens is retracted. • Close the flash. 1 Slide the car d/battery door to open it. • Please be sure to use genuine P anasonic batteries (CGA- S002E).

Preparation 15 About the Car d ∫ Access to the card While the card is being accessed (Recognizing/Recording/Reading/ Deleting), the c ard access indication 1 lights. When the c ard access indication 1 light s, do not: • turn the camera off. • remov e the battery or the card.

Preparation 17 Attachin g the Lens Cap/Strap ∫ Lens Cap 1 Attach the l ens cap. ∫ Stra p 1 P ass the strap through the hole at the Strap Eye let. 2 P ass the strap thr ough the stopper an d fasten the s trap. A : Pull the s trap 2 cm or m ore. • Attach the strap to the ot her side of the camera being careful not to twist it.
Prepara tion 18 Attach ing the Lens Hood In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimise lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts off excess lighting and improv es the picture quality . • C heck that the camera is tur ned off and that the lens is retracted.
Preparation 19 ∫ T emporaril y storing the len s hood 1 Remove the lens hood, re vers e it and then atta ch it again. 1 Place the c amera upside do wn. 2 Catch the hook on the lens hood adapt or . 3 Push the le ns hood. 4 Align the ma rks as illustrated.
Prepara tion 20 Setting Date /Time (Cloc k Set) ∫ Init ial se ttin g The clock is not set w hen the camera is shipped. When you turn the camera on, the fol lowing screen appears. • When pressing the [MENU] button, the screen shown in step 2 appears.
Preparation 21 • When a fully char ged batter y has been inser ted f or more than 24 hours, the clock setting is stored (in the camera) f or at least 3 months e ven if the battery is remov ed. (The storing time may be shor ter if the b attery is not charged sufficiently .

Prepara tion 24 Menu Funct ions MF AS SIST (Recording mode only) In manual focus , assistance sc reen appears on the ce ntre of the screen to f ac ilitate f ocusing on the subject.
Preparation 25 Menu F unctions SCENE ME NU [OFF]: Scene menu does not appear whe n setting the mode dial to [ ] or [ ] and the camera is operated in t he scene mode currently selected. If you change the scene mode, Press t he [MENU] button to display the scene menu and then select the desired scene mode.
Prepara tion 26 About the L CD Monitor/Vie wfinder 1 Switc hing the LCD moni tor/Viewfi nder Pres s the [EVF /LC D] button to s w itch to the screen you would like to turn on. A LCD monitor (LCD) B Viewfinder (EVF) • When the LCD monitor tur ns on, the Viewfinder turns off (and vice versa).
Preparation 27 ∫ Out-of-f rame display The recor ding inf or mation is d isplay ed out of the recording screen, theref ore, you can take pictures without interruption by icons or others on the recording screen. ∫ Diopter adjustm ent This feature is handy for users who w ear corrective lenses and prefer to use the Viewfinder .
Prepara tion 28 ∫ Histogram • A his togram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. • It allows the c amera user to easily chec k the wa y a picture is being e xposed.

Recording pictu res (basic) 31 ∫ AF/AE Lock (AF: Auto focus/ AE: Auto exposu re) When rec ording a picture of p eople with a composition as the abov e picture, you cannot focus on the subject because it is out of AF area in usual oper ation. In this case, 1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
Recording pictures (basi c) 32 ∫ Focusing • The focus range is 30 cm – ¶ (Wide), 200 cm – ¶ (T ele). • If you press the shutter b utton fully without prefocusing, pictures ma y be b lurr y or unfocused. • When the focus indication is b linking, the subject is not f oc used.
Recording pictu res (basic) 33 • When you press the shutter b utton, the screen may become bright f or a moment. This function allows easy adjust ment of f ocus and the recorded picture will not be aff ected. • We recommend setting the clock again before taking pictures.

Recording pictu res (basic) 37 T a king Pictu res using the Built -in Flash When you set the flash, you can tak e pictures using the built-in flash according to the recording condition. ∫ T o open the flash Press the [ OPE N] button. ∫ T o close the flash Press the fl ash until it clicks.

Recording pictu res (basic) 41 Compensati ng the Exposure Use this function when you cannot achiev e appropriate e xposure due t o the diff erence of br ightness between the subject and the background. 1 Press 3 several time s until [ EXPOSURE] appears and then compensate the exposure.
Recording pictures (basi c) 42 T aki ng Pi ctures using A ut o Bracket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the exposure. Y ou can select the desired exposure among the 3 types of pictures.

Playback (basic) 47 Deleting Pic tures ∫ T o delete a single picture 1 Select the pic ture to be dele ted. • 2 : Play back the previous picture. • 1 : Play back the next picture. 2 Del ete t he pi ctur e. • While deleting the picture, [ ] appears on the screen .

Recording pictures (ad vanced) 50 When you want to take a shar p picture of a fast mo v ing subject, set to a f aster shut ter speed. When you w ant to create a tr ail eff ect, set t o a slower shutter speed. 1 Set the shut ter speed and take the p ictur e.

(e.g. When taking pictures of flowers. ) Y ou can take pict ures with the lens at a distance of up t o 5 cm (Wide) f rom the subject. ∫ Focus range • Normal • Macro mode [ ] • We recommend using a tripod.

Recording pictures (ad vanced) 58 This mode allows you to take a picture of a wide landscape. The camera f ocu ses on a distant subject pref erentially . • The focus range is 5 m – ¶ . • The ISO sensitivity is fi xed to [A UTO]. • The Flash setting is fix ed to Forced OF F [] .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 59 This mode allows you to take pictures against a night landscape. The subject can be recorded with brightness in real lif e by using the flash and the slow shutter speed. ∫ T echnique for Night portrait mode • Open the flash.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 60 • In panning mode, the shutter speed becomes slower than usual to achie ve the panning effect. As a result, jitter can easily occur . • Panning function does not work well in the follo wing situations. – V ery bright scenes such as daytime in summer .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 61 • When the auto f ocu s is activ ated, the av ailable recording range is 5 m – ¶ . (We recommend follo wing steps 1 to 5 on the previous page to take pictures with prefocus . ) • The ISO sensitivity is fix ed to [ISO100] .
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 62 This mode allows you to tak e a picture in locations such as skiing resor ts and locations near s nowy mountains. The ex posure and t he white balance are adjusted to make t he white colour of the snow stand out. • The ISO sensitivity is fi xed to [A UTO].
Recording pictu res (advanced) 63 T aki ng Pi cture s wit h Manual Fo cus Use this function when you want to fix the focus or when the distance between the lens and the subject is determined and you do not want to activate the auto f ocus. 1 Select [MF ASSIST] fr om the [SETUP] menu (i n the recor ding mode) (P22) and s et it to [ON].
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 64 ∫ T e chniq ue for Manua l focus 1 Rotate the MF ring slowly . 2 Even if the subject is focused, rotate it a little more .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 65 Using the [REC] mode menu Setting the hue, picture quality adjustm ent, etc. allows you to creat e wide variations on taking pictures. • Set the mode dial to the desired recording mode. • When rotating the zoom le ver tow ard T , the page of the menu screen can be f orwarded.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 66 This function allows you to reproduc e a white colour closer to the tone in real life on the pictures reco rded under sunlight, halogen lighting, etc. i n which the white colour may appear reddish or bluish. • When setting the white balance to the mode except [A UTO], you can finely adjust the white balance .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 67 ∫ Setting the White Balance manual ly (Whit e set ) Use this mode when you w ant to set the white balance manually . 1 Set to [ ] (White Set) and then press 1 . 2 Aim the camera at a sheet of wh ite paper or a similar w hite object so that the f rame on the centre of the screen turns white and then pres s 1 .
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 68 ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values. If you set the ISO sensitivity higher , the camera becomes more suitable for recording in dark places. • When setting to [A UT O], the ISO sensitivity is automat ically adjusted from [ISO80] to [ISO200] according to the brightness.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 69 Y ou can se lect 3 types of quality (compression rate) according to the us age of the picture. • When the quality is set to [ TIFF], a JPEG picture with the quality equal to the standard is c reated at the same time.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 70 Y ou can s witch to the f ollowing metering modes. Meteri ng Mode [MET ERING M ODE] Multiple: This is the m ethod in which the camera measures the most suitable ex posure by judging the allocation of brightness on the whole screen automatically .
Recording pictu res (advanced) 71 • When setting to 3- area-f ocusing, pictures may become still while being f ocus ed on, howe ver , th is is not a malfunction. • When using the digital zoom or when you take pictures in dar k places, the AF area is display ed on the centre of the screen with a size wider than usual.
Recording pictures (ad vanced) 72 Illuminating the subject with t he AF assist lamp allows the camera t o f ocus on the subject in low light conditions . When you press the shutter button halfwa y in dark places or othe r situations, an AF area wider than us ual appears and the AF assist lamp 1 turn s on.
Recording pictu res (advanced) 73 Y ou can us e 4 types of colour effect s depending on the image of the picture . Use this function according to the recording situation and the atmosphere of the picture. • When you take pictures in dark places, noise may become visible.

Playback (advan ced) 83 • Still pictures can only be rotated in norm al play back. When pla ying back rotated pictures in zoom pla yback or multi play back, pictures appear in or iginal angle. • Protected pictures an d pictures reco rded after setting the quality to [TIFF] cannot be rotated.
Playback (ad vanced) 84 ∫ Single s etting Select the picture and set the number of prints . • The number of prints can be set from 0 to 999. • The number of prints icon [ ] appears. • When the number of pr ints is set to “0”, DPOF pr int setting is cancelled.
Playback (advan ced) 85 • DPOF print setting is a conv en ient function when you print pictures with printers suppor ting DPOF pr inting. (P98) • DPOF is t he abbre viation for Digital Print Order F or mat.
Playback (ad vanced) 86 ∫ Multi settin g/T o cancel all settings P erform the same ope rati on as in [Setting the Picture to be Printed and the Number of Prints [ DPOF PRINT]]. ( P83 – 84) • If you want t o delete protected pictures, cancel the protect setting first.

Playback (advan ced) 89 This function is useful if you want to reduce the file size of the picture in cases when it needs to be attached to an e-m ail or uploaded to a website . 1 Select [RESIZE]. 2 Select the pic ture and set i t. • The f ollowing pictures cannot be resized.
Playback (ad vanced) 90 4 Select [YES] or [NO] a nd set it. • When you select [YES], the picture is ov erwr itten. • When the original picture is protected, you cannot o verwr ite the resiz ed picture. • It may not be possib le to resize pictures recorded with other equipment.
Playback (advan ced) 91 2 Select the pic ture to trim and set it. • The f ollowing pictures cannot be trimmed. –Pictures sm aller than 640 k 4 80 pix els –Pictures rec orded after setting the pi.

Playback (advan ced) 93 Play ing Back Pictures with a TV Screen ∫ Pla ying b ack p ictures with A V cable (supplie d) • T ur n the camera and the TV off. 1 Connect the A V cable A (supplied) to th e [A V OUT/ DIGIT AL] sock et of the camera. • Connect the A V cable with the [ ] mark facing you.
