13 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver About Speaker s A and Speakers B Installing Speakers A and Speak ers B allows you to enjoy up to 7.2-channel surround-sound playback from each speaker configuration.
14 En Speaker Configurat ion The follo wing table indicate s the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you hav e. For 9.2-channel surround-sound playback, you need 9 speakers and 2 po wered subwoofers. *1 If you’re using only one surr o und back speaker , connect it to the SURR BA CK/ZONE 3 L terminal.
15 En Connecting the Sp eaker Cables Screw-type speaker terminals Using Banana Plu gs (Nor th American models) • If you are using banana plugs, tighten the speak er terminal before inserting the banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
16 En ■ 7.2-channel Play back with Speakers A or Speakers B The follow ing illustration shows which spea ker should be connected to each pair of terminals for up to 7.2-channel play- back with Speakers A or Speakers B. If you’ re usi ng only one surround back speaker , connect it to the SURR BA CK/ ZONE 3 L termin al.
17 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
18 En Bridging the Fr ont Speakers A The FRONT L/R and SURR BA CK/ZONE 3 L/ R terminal posts can be used with front speak ers and surround back speak- ers respectiv ely , or bridged together to pro vide almost double the output po wer for the front speak ers A.

20 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma ke good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
21 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 48 to 49 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 109 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 11 0 ).
22 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 49 , 50 ).
23 En Note *1 TX-NR5008 *2 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned of f.
24 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radio signals without an y antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
25 En The A V recei ver supports se veral conn ection formats for comp atibilit y with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.
26 En ■ “Monitor Out” settin g set to “Analog” V ideo input signals flo w through the A V receiv er as show n, with composite video, S-V ideo and PC IN (Analog RGB) sources being upcon ver t ed for the component video output. Use this setting if y ou connect the A V receiver’ s COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT to your TV .
27 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Receiver (European and Asian models) T o completely shut do wn the A V receiv er, set PO WER to the OFF position ( ). Tu r n i n g O n 1 (European and Asian models) Set PO WER to the ON position ( ) on the front panel.
28 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the langua ge used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Language ” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 63 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remote contr oller Y ou can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows.
29 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off au tomatically after a specif ied period.
30 En The Home menu provides you quick access to frequently used menus without ha ving to go through the long stan- dard menu. This menu enables you to change settings and view the current informatio n.
31 En When you connect an u -capable Onkyo component, you must configure the i nput display so that u can work properly . This setting can be done only from the front panel. Note • DOCK can be selected for the TA P E , GAME or VCR/D VR input selector , but not at the same time.
32 En T urning Off th e Components *2 When the last-pressed A CTIVITIES is MY MUSIC , the TV will not turn off. Changing the Pla yback Components Assigned to A CTIVITIES Y ou can change the playback components assigned to the A CTIVITIES of Easy Macro mode using the following procedure.
33 En Note • Make the room as quiet as possi ble. Background noise and Radio Frequency Interferen ce (RFI) can disrupt the room measure- ments. Close windo ws, televisions , radios, air conditioners, flu- orescent lights , home appliance s, light dimmers , or other devices.
34 En Note • When Audysse y MultEQ ® XT32 Room Corr ection and Speake r Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ Audyssey ” ( ➔ 53 ).
35 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. Y ou can change the frequency steps ( ➔ 64 ). Listening to th e Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ Auto tuning mode When tuned into a station, the TU NED indicator lights.
36 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 59 ). Its name is displayed instead of the band and frequency . Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote c ontroller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly .
37 En Finding Statio ns by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic News (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Pre ss RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
38 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from different sou rces. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be t urned on for reco rding.

47 En Explanatory Notes Main Menu Input/Outp ut Assign Monitor Out On the “ Monitor Out ” settings, you can select whether or not to ha ve the video source s’ images output through the HDMI output, as well as whet her to ha ve the onscreen setup menu output through the HDMI output or through an analog output.
48 En ■ Resolution Y ou can specify the output r esolution for the HDMI output and COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT and have the A V receiv er upconv ert th e picture resolution as neces- sary to match the resolution suppo rted by your TV .
49 En Note • For compo site video, S-V ideo, and component video upcon ver- sion for the HDMI output, the “ Monitor O ut ” setting must be set to other than “ Anal og ” ( ➔ 47 ), and the “ HDMI Inpu t ” set- ting must be set to “ ----- ”.
50 En Digital A udio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPT 1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector .
51 En ■ Speaker Impedance ` 4ohms : Select if the impeda nce of any speaker is 4 ohms or more but less than 6. ` 6ohms : Select if the impeda nces of all speakers are between 6 and 16 ohms. Note • When bridging is used, “ Speaker Impedance ” setting is fixed at “ 8ohms ”.

54 En THX A udio Setup W ith the “ Surr Back Speaker Spaci ng ” setting, you can specify the distance between your surround back speakers. This setting is used by Sp eake rs A and Speakers B. If you’ re using a THX-certif ied subwoofer , set the “ THX Ultra2/Select2 Subwo ofer ” setting to “ Ye s ”.
55 En Input Channel ` Left + Right : Both the left and right channels are output. ` Left : Only the left channel is output. ` Right : Only the right channel is output. Output Speaker ` Center : Mono audio is output b y the center speaker . ` Left / Right : Mono audio is output b y th e front left and right speaker s.
56 En ■ V olume Leveler ` Off : V olume Le veler of f. ` Low : Low Compression Mode becomes active. ` Mid : Medium Compression M ode becomes acti ve. ` High : High Compression Mode be comes ac tiv e. This set- ting affects v olume the mo st, causin g all sounds to be of equal loudness.
57 En Direct ■ Analog Subwoofer ` Off : Analog audio signals (bas s signals) are not output. ` On : Analog audio signals (b ass signals) are output. This setting determ ines whet her or not analog audio sig- nals (bass signals) are output from front speakers when the Pure Audio or Direct list ening mode is selected.
58 En ■ Dynamic V olume ` Off : Audyssey Dynamic V olume ® off. ` Light : Light Compression M ode becomes acti ve. ` Medium : Medium Compression M ode becomes acti ve. ` Hea vy : Heavy Compression Mode be comes active. This set- ting affects v olume the mo st, causin g all sounds to be of equal loudness.
59 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually . This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
60 En Picture Adjust Using “ Picture Adjust ”, you can adjust the picture qual- ity and reduce any noise appearing on the screen. T o view the TV picture while setting, press ENTER . T o return to the pre vious screen, press RETURN . ■ Game Mode ` Off : Game Mode off.
61 En ■ Mosquito NR *2*3*4* 6 ` Off : Mosquito noise reduction off. ` Low : Low mosquito noise r eduction. ` Mid : Medium mosquito noise reduction. ` High : High mosquito noise reduction. W ith Mosquito Noise Reduc tion, you can remo ve the shimmering or haziness th at sometimes appears around objects in the picture.
62 En ■ Blue Contrast *2*4 ` –50 to 0 to +50 W ith this setting you can adjust blue contrast. “ –50 ” is the le ast. “ +50 ” is the greatest. Tip *1 This procedure can also be perf ormed on the remote controller by using the Home menu ( ➔ 30 ).
63 En Main menu Miscellaneous Vo l u m e S e t u p ■ V olume Displa y ` Absolute : Display range is “ Min ”, “ 0.5 ” throug h “ 99.5 ”, “ Max ”. ` Relative(THX) : Display range is “ – Q dB ”, “ –81.5dB ” through “ +18.0dB ”.
64 En Main menu Hard ware Setup Remote ID ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may o verlap. T o differenti- ate the A V receiv er from the other components, you can change its remote ID from “ 1 ”, to “ 2 ” or “ 3 ”.
65 En ■ HDMI Control(RIHD) ` Off : p disabled. ` On : p enabled. This function allows p -compatible componen ts connected via HDMI to be contro lled with the A V recei ver ( ➔ 110 to 111 ). Note • When set to “ On ” and close the menu, the name of connected p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are dis- played on the A V receiver.
66 En A uto P ower Down ■ A uto P ower Down ` Off : Auto Power Down disabled. ` On : Auto Power Down enabled. When “ A uto Power Down ” is set to “ On ”, A V receiver will automatical ly perform ST ANDBY operation if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio and no video signal input.
67 En Note • This setting is not available when the multichannel analog input is selected. • T o b ypass the bass and treble tone circuits, select the Direct, Pure Audio or THX listening mode. Speaker Levels Y ou can adjust the v olume of each speaker while liste ning to an input source.
68 En Screen Center ed Dialog “ Screen Ctr Dialog ” is a function for moving the Center image of dialog etc. upwards th rough use of the front high speaker to f ix the image to the display height. ■ Screen Ctr Dialog As the value increases, th e Center image m ov es upwards.
69 En Setting the Incoming Digital Signal (Fixe d Mode) By pressing ENTER while selecting “ HDMI ”, “ CO AX ”, “ OPT ” in the “ A udio Selector ”, you can specify the input signal in the Fixed Mode. Pressing ENTER again allows you to return to the “ A udio Selector ” setting.
70 En NET/USB The A V receiv er is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home netw ork with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music f iles stored on your computer or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
71 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V recei ver to a netw ork with Internet access ( ➔ 70 ). Y ou can select Internet radio stations by co nnecting to the A V recei ver from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
72 En Registering Pre sets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio sc reen, and then pr ess ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pr eset the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
73 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random orde r, during playback (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current folder will be played in random order .
74 En Supported Audio File Formats For serv er playback, the A V receiver supports the follo w- ing music file formats: MP3, WMA, W A V , FLAC, Ogg V orbis, AA C and LPCM. Not all servers support all for- mats. ■ MP3 • MP3 files must be MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3 for- mat with a sampling rate of 8 kHz, 11.
75 En Server Requirements The A V recei ver can play di gital music f iles stored on a computer or media server and supports the follo wing tech- nologies: • W indows Media Player 11 • W indows Media Connect 2.
76 En Using Remote Pla yback Note • When modifying network settings , after modifying it is neces- sary to execute “ Sa ve ”. This section explains ho w to configure the A V receiver’ s network settings manually .
77 En Note • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using SETUP , arrows, and ENTER . ■ Mac Address This is the A V recei ver’ s MA C (Media Access Control) address.
78 En USB can be used to play mu sic files stored on USB mass storage devices (e.g., USB fl ash dri ves and MP3 players), which can be plugged into the A V receiv er’ s USB port. Supported Audio File Formats For USB mass storage de vice playback, the A V receiver supports music file formats.
79 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
80 En Multi Zone In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pl ayback in the other room, or as we call Multi Zone. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speak ers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
81 En Zone 2 Video Output The A V receiv er features a composite video output for connection to a TV in Zone 2, so you can enjoy both audio and video in that zone. Note •T h e ZONE 2 OUT V jack o utputs video from components con- nected to composite video only .
82 En Connecting Y our Zone 3 Speakers to an Amp in Zone 3 This setup allows 9.2-channe l playback in your main lis- tening room and 2-channel st ereo playback in Zone 3, with a different source in each room. Note • With the def ault settings, the Zone 3 volume must be set on the Zone 3 amp.
83 En Note • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using SETUP , arrows, and ENTER . ■ Zone 2 Out, Zo ne 3 Out ` Fixed : The Zone 2/3 volume must be set on the amp in that zone. ` Va r i a b l e : The Zone 2/3 volume can be set on the A V recei ver.
84 En Contro lling Zone 2/3 with the Remote Contro ller Note • T o control Zone 2/3, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE firs t. • ZONE turns red while Zone 2 is on, and green while Zone 3 is on. Note • Only analog input sources are output by the ZONE 2/3 PRE OUT and FRONT WIDE/ZONE 2 L/R , SURR B ACK/ZONE 3 L/R terminals.
85 En T o control the A V recei ver with the remote control ler while you’ re in Zone 2 o r Z one 3, you’ll need a commer- cially a vailable multiroom remote control kit for each zone.
86 En Controlling iPod & Other Components Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music files stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V receiver’ s USB port. Note • (TX-NR5008) Note that the rear-panel USB port does not sup - port iPod/iPhone connection.
87 En *2 The following iPod models ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can only be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/i Phone, the A V receiv er stores the mode. This means that if you disconnect when in Extended Mode, the A V recei ver will start in Extended Mo de when you next connect the iPod /iPhone.
88 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the musi c, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
89 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V recei ver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .
90 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons • With some iPod models, generatio ns and RI Docks, certain butto ns may not work as e xpected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, please re fer to the instruction manual of RI Dock. *1 This button does not turn the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
91 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-773M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a compo nent that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
92 En Tip • If you cannot access the database, a message “ Cannot connect to database. ” will appear . Press ENTER to return to the previous step. • If the brand name is not found, use r to select “ Not Listed ”, and then press ENTER . The following screen ap pears.
93 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remo te control code s provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component.
94 En Yo u c a n r e s e t a REMOT E MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can rese t the remote controller to its default sett ings. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been progr ammed with the remote control c ode for your component, you can control your component as below .
95 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may no t work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p function is not supp orted. The p sup- ported by the A V receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
96 En V ia onscreen menu, you can spec ify what actions will be taken by the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode ( ➔ 31 ). Here ar e the default settings.
97 En The A V recei ver’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmitting, for example, the Play comman d from your CD player’ s remote contro ller , the remote control ler can learn it, and then transmit the e xact same command when its 1 is pressed in the CD remote mode.
