1-2 This manual contains detailed operating instructions for all aspects of the FD6000 instruments. The following condensed instructions are provided to assist the operator in getting the instrument started up and running as quickly a s possible. This pertains to basic operation only.
1-3 3. TRANSDUCER/PO WER CONNECTIONS A. Do not attempt to add additional cable to the transducers. B. Refer to the DIAGRAMS in Figure 1.2 for proper pow er and transducer connections. Verify proper jumper selections are in place for the pow er source.
1-4 The FD6000 Series flowmeter is designed to measure the flow of liquids and slurries in full-pipe closed systems. The transmitt er is field con figured to measure flow on a variety of pipes and liquids. The standard product is typically used on pipe sizes ranging from 1 - 120 inch [ 25 - 15 24 mm ] pipe I.
1-5 The flowme ter is typi cally used as a unidi rectional meter and is most ac curate when th e trans ducer is mounted in t he orient ation det ailed in this man ual. But, the met er w ill measure flow in both directions — although flo w direction will not be indicated or totalized properly.
1-6 The FD6000 Series employs modular construction and provides electrical safety for the operator. The display face c ontains voltages no g reater th an 9 Vdc and any ex posed met al work is electrically connected to Earth Grou nd. Th e display face sw ings ope n to allow access to us er connections.
1-7 P ART 1 - GENERAL (Std) 115 or 230 V AC 50/60 Hz ± 10% and 12 VDC. (Opt) Po wer consumption less than 12 V A..
NOTES.
2-1 The following list outlines how to install the transducer for optimal per formance, highest reliability and greatest accuracy: 1. Select a tr ansducer sit e at leas t 10 pipe diameters downstream from be nds, or fittings and 5 pipe diameters upstream.
2-2 operating rang e o f the meter. Dow n stream from pump or ori fices, etc., l ocate at le ast 20 dia meters. See Table 2.1 2. On horizontal pipe, select a positio n that is between 2 and 4 o’c lock on the pip e, with 12 o’clock representing the t op.
2-3 permanently mounted. Under flowing liquid conditions, adequa te sig nal is indicated w hen the Signal Strength indic ates between 00 0125 and 000200 cou nts. For proper op eration , ther e cannot be a ir voids between t he traduc er face a nd pipe.
2-4 1. Pipe Prepar ation: For perma nent silicone adhesive m ounting, after determining the trans ducer location, s ome attention must be giv en to the pipe co ndition.
2-5 adhesive (Dow-732). Sprea d a bead o f the adhesiv e on the flat sur face of the transduc er face, cov ering well. Now spread a bea d to the prepar ed pipe surface and press the head lightly to the pipe. Let the adhesive flow enough to fill in all the area beneath th e head.
NOTES.
3-1 P ART 3 - PRE-INST ALLA TIO N CHECK OUT After unpacking, it is r ecommended to sav e the s hipping carton and packing materials in case the instrume nt is stored or re-ship ped. Inspect t he equipment and cart on for damage. I f there is ev idence of ship ping damage, notify the c arrier imm ediately.
3-2 forth with y our thumb using mo derate pr essur e. The cycle time should be 1-2 times per second. 8. Ve rify that signal st rength increases w ith frequency of the rubbing . Typical i ncreases w ill range from 20-30 counts. 9. Verify that signal strength decreases w hen rubbing ceases.
3-3 1. Place the tra nsmitter in a locatio n that is: ♦ W h ere little v ibration e xist. ♦ Protected from falli ng corrosiv e fluids. ♦ W i thin am bient temper ature limits - 2 2 to 122 ° F [-30 to 50 ° C] ♦ Out of direct sunlight. Di rect sunlight may increase temperat ures w ithin the trans mitter to abov e max imum limit.
3-4 NOTE: The transducer cable carries low lev el signals. Do not att empt to a dd ad ditional ca ble to t he factory supplied transducer c able. P ART 2 - SER VICE AND MA INTENANCE P ART 3 - TRANSMITTER INST ALL A TION FIGURE 3.3 Impor tant ! FD-5000 Shown 1.
3-5 The 4- 20mA output is pro portional to t he flow rate measuring scale and c an drive a load of up to 10 00 ohms. The output is isolated from earth g round and circ uit low. Connect the load to the 4- 20 mA connecti on terminals located on the inside of the enclosure, matching polarity as indicated.
3-6 1. Guide the transduc er terminations thro ugh the transmitter cond uit hol e located on t he left s ide of t he enclosure. Secure t he transduc er cable w ith the supplied conduit nut. 2. The terminals o n the t ransducer ca ble are c oded w ith wire markings.
3-7 Note: The FD6000 Series flow meter system requires a full pipe of flowing liquid before a successful startup can be completed. Do not attempt to make adjustments or change configurations until a full pipe is verified. Procedure: 1. Verify that all w iring is properly connec ted and rout ed.
3-8 After a success ful flow meter installation and startup (covered in the previous sections of this manual) the FD6000 can be keypad c onfigured to prov ide select eng ineerin g unit readings of flow and a scaled 4-20mA output. Configuration inp uts are made v ia the keypad an d ar e stored by the microprocessor.

By apply ing a CAL value o ther than 1 00%, the factory- calibrated reading s will be altered by the perc entage entered.
3-16 2 nd FUNCT - SERVICE MODE {2 nd FUNCT} SIGNAL STR Displays the raw Doppler signal strength v alue. This value will increase as t he velocity of th e liquid increases.
3-17 {2 nd FUNCT} 4 mA The 4-20mA output on standard FD6000 Series flow meters is scaled at z ero flow equals 4mA and 20 FPS ( 6.08 MPS) equals 20mA. The 4m A key allow s fine adjus tments to b e made to th e “zero” of the 4-2 0mA output or al lows offset to be placed on the 4-20mA out put.
3-18 {2 nd FUNCT} 20mA The 4-20mA output on standard FD6000 fl ow meters is scaled at zero flow equals 4mA a nd 20 FP S (6.08 MPS) equals 20mA. The 2 0mA key allow s fine adjustments to be made t o the “spa n” o f the 4-20 mA output. To adjus t the 20mA output, an ammeter or reliable refer ence connection to the 4-20 mA output mus t be present.
3-19 {2 nd FUNCT} INPUT F.S. This key is used t o select a max imum v elocity that the instrument will operate. Choices are 10, 20 and 30 FPS . It is not recommen ded to d eviate alter t his value from factory settings, as c er tain spans hav e been set that correlate to the se t max imum v elocity.
