2 Tips before you start taking pictures 18 Holding the camera Sometimes when you loo k at a pi cture yo u have t aken, the o utline of the subject is blurred. This is often caused by moveme nt of the camera at the precise moment t hat the shutter butto n is pressed.

However, hig her values also introd uce electrica l noise int o the resul ting image, whic h may give it a grainy appearance .
4 Advanced sho oting fu nctions 40 Exposure compensation This fun ction all ows you to make fine chang es to the exposu re setting. You can adjus t the ex posure in the range of ±2 .0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. When the setting is chan ged, you can check th e result on the monitor.
Advanced sh ooting function s 4 41 White balance Color reproduct ion differs depending on the light co nditions. For instance, when daylight, t he setting sun or tungst en lighti ng are reflected on white paper, the shade of white produc ed will be sligh tly diff erent for each.

As you can choo se the best pi cture from a series of sequenti al shots, you are recommended to use this mode when photograph ing a mov ing subject.
5 Addition al shootin g functions 48 Self-timer shooting This functi on lets you take pict ures using the self -timer. Fix the camera securely o n a trip od for self-ti mer shooting. This func tion i s useful for taking pictures wh en you want to be included in the photograph.
5 Additional sh ooting functions 49 Panorama shootin g You can take advan tage of panorama sho oting with Olympus cards (xD- Picture Ca rd). Pan orama shooting l ets you conne ct pictures wit h overlapping edges into a singl e panoramic pi cture, using the OLYMPUS Master software.

Re cording starts about 0.5 seconds afte r the shutt er is released and lasts about 4 seco nds. When this function is en abled, sou nd is recorded aut omaticall y every time you take a picture.
53 6P l a y b a c k With film-type ca meras, you cannot view th e pictures you have taken until the film has been developed. Results can be disappointing when you develop blurred images or pictures in which sub jects had their eyes closed.

6 Playback 72 Recording sound Sound can be added t o a still pict ure that you have already taken. (Thi s is known as “after-re cording”.) You can al so re-record over th e sound that has alread y been recorded. Total record ing time pe r picture is approximate ly 4 seconds.

6 Playback 76 Information display This fu nction l ets you di splay deta iled shooti ng informat ion on th e monitor for approx. 3 seconds in the pl ayback mode. 6 Playback 78 Protecting pictures You are recommended to pro tect impo rtant pict ures to av oid acciden tally erasing t hem. Protected p ictures cannot be erased but they are all erased by formatting. Select the pi cture that you want to prot ect and display the top menu.

6 Playback 80 Formatting This fun ction lets you format the memory card. Formatting prepares cards to receive dat a. Before using non-OLYMPUS cards or cards which have been formatted on a compu ter, you must format them with this camera. All exist ing data , includ ing prote cte d pictures, are era sed when the card is formatted.
81 7 Settings One of the key features of a digital camer a is that you can view the pictures you have taken immediately. But that isn’t all. Another advantage is that you can customize the camer a to your own personal taste.
7 Settings 82 All reset This functi on lets you choose whether or not to save the current camera settings aft er the power is turned off. The sett ings affected by [ALL RESET] are listed as below. The [ALL RESET] setting ([ ON]/[OFF]) applie s to all the modes.

7 Settings 88 File name The camera auto matically creat es file names and f older names for images to be stored in. Files can be numbe red from 00 01 to 9999 and fold ers can be numbered from 100 to 999. Examples are shown below. There ar e two se ttings f rom which you can c hoose : [RESET] or [AUT O].
Settings 7 89 Pixel mapping The pixel mappi ng feature allows t he camera to check and adjust the CCD and image processing functions. It is not necess ary to operate this functi on frequentl y.
