4 Menu operations The screen that appears on the monitor when you turn the camera on and press the OK/MENU button is called the “T op menu.” There are three top menus as shown below . The shooting mode screens will be used he re to explain how to use the menus.

9 1 T aking Pictures This chapter describes how to ta ke successive pictures, movies and how to use the flash, zoom, etc. T o change the shooting settings, refer to “3: Setting Up.
10 1 T aking Pictures Focusing on a subject that is not in cen ter of frame (Focus lock) When the subject you want to focus on is not exactly in the center of the monitor and you cannot position th e AF target mark on it, you can focus on another point at roughly the same distance (focus lock) and take the picture as explained below .

14 1 T aking Pictures Changing shooting scene modes l There are 14 shooting scene modes to choose from on this camera. T o create the effects you want, simply select the mode best suited to your purpose or conditions. Until you beco me familiar with the camera, it is recommended t hat [PROGRAM AUTO] be used to take pictures.

Changing shooting scene modes l 16 1 T aking Pictures CUISINE G Lets you take beautiful pictures of food. The saturation, sharpness and contrast settings are increased to take sharp, vivid pictures of the subject. BEACH & SNOW R Suitable for taking pictures at a beach or in snow .

Picture qua lity mode can only be se t to SQ2 “1280 × 960”, “1024 × 768” and “640 × 480.” CANDLE U The optimum mode to take a picture of candles preserving warm light of candles.
18 1 T aking Pictures Recording movies N Y ou can record movies as well as still pictures with this camera. The camera maintains the correct exposure during movie recording even if your subject moves. The sound is au tomatically recorded when recording a movie.
Recording movies N 19 1 T aking Pictures Press the shutter button the rest of the way and release it to start recording. While a movie is taken, N indicator light s red. Press the shutter button again to stop recording. When the remaining recording time has been used up, recording stops automatically .
20 1 T aking Pictures Using zoom systems This camera has two zoom systems, one is a normal optical zoom system and the other is a digital zoom system. Using the zoom systems, you can cha nge the scope and composition of the picture you are taking. Using the optical zoom Press the zoom button in shooting mode ( K ).
Using zoom systems 21 1 T aking Pictures Enabling digit al zoom The optical zoom is operated si mply by pressing the zoom button, but to use the digital zoom, [DIGIT AL ZOOM] must be set to [ON] on the monitor . The optical zoom magnifies the subject by extending t he lens.
Using zoom system s 22 1 T aking Pictures Press or to select [ON] and press the OK/MENU button. The digital zoom is set. Press the OK/MENU button again t o exit the menu. The digital zoom c annot be used when [ OFF] is select ed. Press the zoom bu tton to operat e the digital zoom.
23 1 T aking Pictures Using flash # The camera is i nitially set to Auto -flash, but you can select from the following four flash modes according to th e shooting conditions. Auto-flash (Factory default setting) The flash fires automa tically in lo w light or backlight conditions.
Using flash # 24 1 T aking Pictures Press ( # ) repeatedly in shooting mode ( K ) to change the flash setting. The flash settings change in the order of the arrow . Af ter [ $ ], the setting returns to [AUTO]. The flash charging lamp ( # ) blinks while the flash is charging.
25 1 T aking Pictures Changing resolution and quality K Picture quality modes for still pictures This function lets you select the resol ution and quality wh en recording pictures on the card. It is best to choose the resolution and quality according to the pu rpose.
Changing resolution and quality K 26 1 T aking Pictures Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode ( K ). The top menu is displayed. Press to select [ K ]. Compression rate and picture quality The quality of the picture depends on the compression rate.
Changing resolution and quality K 27 1 T aking Pictures Press or to select [SHQ], [HQ], [SQ1] or [SQ2]. If you selected [SHQ], [HQ] or [SQ 1], go to step 4. If you selected [SQ2], go to step 3. Press to display the [SQ 2] setup screen. Press or to choose a resolution and press the OK/MENU button.

Changing resolution and quality K 29 1 T aking Pictures Press the OK/MENU button in the MOVIE ( n ) shooting mode. The top menu is displayed. Press to select [ K ] . Press or to select [HQ] or [SQ]. Press the OK/MENU button. The selected record mode and time remainin g are displayed.
30 1 T aking Pictures Selecting whi te balance acco rding to surrounding lightin g 0 When daylight, the sun or tungste n lighting a re reflected on white substance, the shade of white produc ed wi ll differ for each.

The selected white balanc e mode is set. When the white balance mode is selected, the white balance indicators [ 5 , 3 , 1 , > ] are displayed on the monitor .
32 1 T aking Pictures Setting Exposure Compensation F If your subject is extremel y bright or dark, or if the contrast between th e subject and the background is high, you can adjust the brightness using the exposure compen sation feature. Y ou can adjust the exposure between +2.
33 1 T aking Pictures Changing ISO sensitivities Setting ISO sensitivity at a high level is effective in taking pictures of the subject in dark or low-lighting conditions. However , the picture may contain noise or become grainy . Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode.

Press the OK/MENU button again t o exit the menu. T ake the pictures. The higher IS O sensitivi ty setting you se lect, the high er noise leve l the picture has .
35 1 T aking Pictures When brightness of subject an d background differs 5 T aking pictures of a backlit subject may result in darkened faces or other foreground objects. Using the spot metering in such situations will ensure that the subject is clear regardless of the background light.

Press the OK/MENU button again t o exit the menu. T ake the picture using spot metering. c Position the subject in the center of the frame and press the shutter button halfway .
37 1 T aking Pictures T aking close-up pictures & Use the macro mode when you want to shoot a close up of the subject, for example when taking a picture of a flower . With the macro mode, you can take pictures as close as 20 cm (7.8 in.) to the subject.
Taking close-up pictures & 38 1 T aking Pictures Setting up Super macro mode % Select the super macro mode to take pictures as close as 8 cm (3.1 in.) to the subject. The lens will be set to T (T elephoto) and the flash will not op erate. Press ( & ) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [ % ].
39 1 T aking Pictures Using self-timer Y In the self-timer mode, the picture is taken a pproximately 12 seconds after the shutter button is pressed. Y ou are recommended to stabilize the camera by using a tripod. Press ( Y ) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [ Y ON].
40 1 T aking Pictures T aking successive pictures j This function allows yo u to take a rapid successi on of still pictures at approximately 1.3 frames per second (7 pictures in [SHQ] mode) by keeping the shutter button pressed.

42 1 T aking Pictures Panoramic shooting Y ou can take advantage of the panoramic shooting feature with the Olympus xD-Picture Card. The panoramic shooting lets you connect pictures with overlapping edges into a single panoramic picture, using the OL YMPUS Master software contained in the CD-ROM provided.

Panoramic shooting 44 1 T aking Pictures Make sure that the edges of the pictures overlap, then take your pictures. Use the frames at the edges of the screen as a guide when composing your pictu res. The first and second shots are taken so tha t they overlay pa rt A.
45 1 T aking Pictures S titching together two pictures / This function allows you to position two pictures taken in succession next to each other and store them as a single picture. Y o u can combine two different subjects in one picture. Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode ( K ).

47 1 T aking Pictures Recording sound with still pictures R This functi on lets you record sound when taking a still picture. Recording begins about 0.5 seconds after pressing the shutter button and lasts for about 4 seconds. When this function is enabled, soun d is automatically recorded af ter each picture is t aken.

50 2 Vie w in g Displaying several pictures at once G This function lets you view several thumbnail pictures on the monitor at once. It is useful when you are looking for a specific picture. Y ou can change the number of pictures displayed . g “Selecting the number of pic tures G ” (P .

53 2 Vie w in g Enlarging pictures U A picture displayed on the monitor can be enlarged up to 4 times their original size to check the clarity of the picture. Press the U side of the zoom button in the playback mode. The picture is enlarged in step s (1.
54 2 Vie w in g Rotating pictures y Pictures taken when the camera is held vertically are displayed horizontally . In playback mode, display the picture you want to rota te. Press the OK/MENU button. The top menu is displayed. Press to go to [MOD E MENU].
Rotating pictures y 55 2 Vie w in g Press or to select the [PLA Y] tab. Press to go to the [PLA Y] menu. Press or to select [ y ]. Press to go to the rotation display settings. Press or to select [+90°] or [–90°]. The picture is rota ted and displayed.
56 2 Vie w in g Displaying pictures one after another m This function automatically d isplays the pictures in order (slideshow). For movies, only the first frame is displayed. Press the OK/MENU button in playback mode. The top menu is displayed. Press to start the slideshow .
57 2 Vie w in g Recording sound with pictures taken R This functi on lets you re cord sound to the stil l pictures already taken, or renew recorded sound. Recording time for each picture is for about 4 seconds. Play back the picture you wish to add sound to in playback mode.
Recording sound with pictures ta ken R 58 2 Vie w in g Press to select [ST AR T] and press the OK/MENU button. Sound recording st arts. If the source of the sound you are r ecording is more than 1 m (3.3 ft.) away from the ca mera, the record ed sound may not be very clear.
59 2 Vie w in g Playing back movies q This function lets you play back movies on the camera’s monitor . When the playback mode is ac tivated, the last picture recorded is played back on the monitor . Follow the instructions below to select a pictu re with n mark and play it back.

Playing back movi es q 61 2 Vie w in g Creating an index The camera automatically selects nine frames from the movie and stores as still pictures, enabling you to see the content of the movie at a glance. Select a movie with n and play it back. Press the OK/MENU button.
Playing back movies q 62 2 Vie w in g Press again to go to the index creation mode. Press or to select [INDEX], then press the OK/MENU button. When the processing is completed, the frames are saved as new still pictures. The index is st ored as pictur es in different reco rd modes from the ori ginal movie.
63 2 Vie w in g Playback on a TV Y ou can play back pictures on a TV . Use the A V cable provided with the camera to connect the camera to the TV . Select NTSC or P AL according to your TV video signal system.
Playback on a TV 64 2 Vie w in g Press or to select [NTSC] or [P AL] and press the OK/MENU button. The video signal system is set. Press the OK/MENU button again t o exit the menu. T urn the camera and the TV off. Plug the A V cable in to the Multi- connector on the camera.
Playback on a TV 65 2 Vie w in g T urn the TV on and switch to the video input mode. For information on the video input mo de, refer to your manual o f the TV . Press the POWER switch to turn the camera on. The picture is displa yed on the TV . Operate th e camera in the same way as norma l playback to display pi ctures on your TV .
66 2 Vie w in g Displaying shooting information This function changes the sh ooting information displayed on the monito r . The shootin g informatio n is displaye d for approxim ately 3 seconds . Press the OK/MENU button in the playback mode. The top menu is displayed.
67 2 Vie w in g Editing pictures Creating sof t focus pictures This function enables you to add soft focus effect s to the selected pictures and store them as new pictures. By using soft focus ef fect s, you can change your picture to a v i gnette picture to g ive a fantastic atmosphere.
Editing pictures 68 2 Vie w in g Press or to select [SOFT FOCUS]. Press to go to the soft focus picture settings. Press or to select [SOFT FOCUS]. Press the OK/MENU button to create the soft focus picture. Once the sof t focus picture is crea ted, it is stored as a new picture.
Editing pictures 69 2 Vie w in g Creating fish-eye pictures This function enables you to add fish -eye view effect s to the selected pictures and store them as new pictures. When the fish-eye view mode is selected, the picture is transformed into a spherica l picture.

Editing pictures 71 2 Vie w in g Creating black and white pictures This function enables you to convert selected pictures into black and white pictures and sto re them as new pictures. While in playback mode, display the picture you want to convert into black and white pictures.

Editing pictures 73 2 Vie w in g Creating sepia-tone pictures This function enables you to convert selected pictures into sepia-to ne pictures and store them as new pictures. While in playback mode, display the picture you want to convert into sepia color .
Editing pictures 74 2 Vie w in g Press or to select [SEPIA]. Press to go to the sepia-tone picture settings. Press or to select [SEPIA]. Press the OK/MENU button to create the sepia-tone picture. Once the sepia-tone pict ure is created, it is stored as a new picture.
Editing pictures 75 2 Vie w in g Changing the resolution Q This function enables you to change the resolution of selected pi ctures and store them as new pictures. This is useful when you want to reduce the volume of picture data, such as when posting pictures on the Internet or attaching them to e-mail.

Once the picture is resized, it is stored as a new picture. A new picture cannot be created if the card is full.
77 2 Vie w in g Protecting pictures 0 Y ou can protect important pictures to avoid accidentally erasing th em. Protected pictures cannot be erased by the si ngle-frame or all- frame er ase function. Formatting erases both un protected and protected pictures .

79 2 Vie w in g Erasing one picture S Digital cameras let you erase pictures that you do not want to keep. Y o u can also erase all the pictures s tored (except pro tected ones) on the card at once . g “Erasing all pictures R ” (P .80) The protect ed pictures cann ot be erased.

83 3 Setting Up Describes how to set operation modes and change setti ngs. 3 Setting Up When the same setti ngs are available for “Shoot ing mode” and “Playback mode,” the mon itor displays for “Shooti ng mode” are used in this chapter.
84 3 Setting Up Selecting a language W Y ou can select the langua ge in which the menus and error messages are displayed on the monitor . Press the OK/MENU button. The top menu is displayed. Press to go to [MOD E MENU]. Press or to select the [SETUP] tab.

86 3 Setting Up Setting date and time X Y ou can set the date and time. This feature is ha ndy when managing pictures on a computer or printing pictures. Press the OK/MENU button. The top menu is displayed. Press to go to [MOD E MENU]. Press or to select the [SETUP] tab.
Setting date and time X 87 3 Setting Up Press or to select one of the following date formats: [Y]-[M]-[D] (Y ear/Month/Day), [M]-[D]-[Y] (Month/ Day/Y ear), [D]-[M]-[Y] (Day/Month/ Y ear). Press to go to the year input. The follow ing steps sh ow the procedure used when the d ate format is set t o [Y]-[M]-[D].
88 3 Setting Up Saving settings This functi on lets you save the shooti ng and other settings you have made during shooting or playback. The camera is set to [ON] at the time of purch ase. The setting s affected by [ALL RESE T] are listed on g P .89. Press the OK/MENU button.

90 3 Setting Up Checking the picture you have just taken REC VIEW lets you check the picture you have just taken on the monitor . The picture is displayed for a few seconds between shots, letting you check each picture as it is taken.

104 3 Setting Up Setting file names For the pictures stored on the card, file names and folder names are automatically recorded by the camera. File and folder names are assigned as shown below , using a file number (0001-9999) and fo lder number (100-999), respectively .
