9 1 T aking Pict ures This chapter de scribes how to ta ke succes sive pictures, movies and how to use the fl ash, zoom, etc. T o change the shooting settin gs, refer to “3: Setting Up.
10 1 T aking Pict ures Focusing on a subject that is not in center of frame (Focus lock) When the su bject you want to focus on is not exactly in the center of the monitor and you cannot positio n the AF target mark on it, you can focus on another point at rough ly the same distance (focus lock) and take the picture as explained below .

12 1 T aking Pict ures Changing focus zone (AF) Y ou can select the focusing mode. Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode ( K ). The top menu is displ ayed. Press to go to [MODE MEN U]. Press or to select the [CAMERA] tab. Press to go to the [CAMER A] menu.
Changing focus zone (AF) 13 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [iESP] or [SPOT] and press the OK/MENU button. The AF mode is set. Press the OK/MENU butt on again to exit the menu.
14 1 T aking Pict ures Changing shooting scene modes l There are 14 shooting scene modes to choo se from on this camera. T o create the ef fects you want, simply select the mode best su ited to your purpose or conditions. Until you b ecome f amiliar with the camera , it is recommen ded that [ PROGRAM AUTO] be used to take pict ures.

Chan ging shootin g scene mode s l 17 1 T aking Pict ures INDOOR H Suitable to take pictures of the subject indo ors together with backg round scene. Pictur e qualit y mode ca n only be se t to SQ2 “1280 × 960”, “10 24 × 768” and “640 × 480.
18 1 T aking Pict ures Recording movies N Y ou can record movies as we ll as still pictures with this camera. The camera mainta ins the correct exposu re during mo vie recording eve n if your subject moves. The sound is automatica lly recorded w hen recording a movie.
Recording movies N 19 1 T aking Pict ures Press the shutter button the rest of the way and release it to st art recording. While a movi e is taken, N indica tor light s red. Press the shutter button again to stop recording. When the remaining recording time has been used up , recording stops automatically .
20 1 T aking Pict ures Using zoom systems This camera has two zoom systems, one is a normal optical zoom system and the other is a digital zoom system. Using the zoom system s, you can change the scope and composition o f the picture you are taking. Using the optical zoom Press the zoom button in shooting mode ( K ).
Using zoom systems 21 1 T aking Pict ures Enabling digit al zoom The optical zoom is operate d simply by pressing the zoom button, but to use the digital zoom, [DIGIT A L ZOOM] must be set to [ON] on the monitor . The opti cal zoo m magnifi es the su bject b y extend ing the lens.
Using zoom syst ems 22 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [ON] and press the OK/MENU button. The digit al zoom is set. Press the OK/MENU butt on again to exit the menu. The digital zo om cannot be used whe n [OFF] is sele cted. Press the z oom butto n to ope rate the digital zoom.
23 1 T aking Pict ures Using flash # The came ra is init ially set to Auto -flash, but you can select from the following four flash modes accord ing to the shooting conditio ns. Auto-flash (Factory default setting) The flash fires auto mati cally in lo w light or b acklight conditions.
Using flash # 24 1 T aking Pict ures Press ( # ) repeatedly in shooting mode ( K ) to change the flash setting. The flash settings change in the order of the arrow . After [ $ ], the setting returns to [AUT O]. The fl ash char ging lamp ( # ) blinks while the flash is charging.
25 1 T aking Pict ures Changing resolution and quality K Picture quality modes for still pictures This function lets you sel ect the resolution and qual ity when recordi ng pictures on the card. It is best to choose the resolution and qual ity according to the purpose.
Changing resolution and quality K 26 1 T aking Pict ures Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode ( K ). The top menu is displ ayed. Press to select [ K ]. Compression rate and picture quality The quality of the picture depends on the compression rate.
Changing resolution a nd quality K 27 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [SHQ], [HQ], [SQ1] or [SQ2]. If you selected [SHQ ], [HQ] or [SQ1] , go to step 4. If you sele cted [SQ2], go to step 3. Press to display the [SQ2] setup screen. Press or to choose a resolution and press the OK/MENU button.
Changing resolution and quality K 28 1 T aking Pict ures Picture quality modes for movie Y ou can select between two picture quality modes. 30 1 T aking Pict ures Selecti ng white ba lance acco rding to surrounding ligh ting 0 When daylight, the sun or tungste n li ghting are re flected on white substance, the shade of white produc ed will differ for each.
Selecting white balance accordin g to surroun ding lighting 0 31 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [AUTO], [ 5 ], [ 3 ], [ 1 ] or [ > ], then press the OK/ MENU button. The selected white bal ance mode is set. When the white balance mode is selected, the white balance indicator s [ 5 , 3 , 1 , > ] are displayed on the monitor .
32 1 T aking Pict ures Setting Exposure Compensation F If your subject is extremel y bright or dark, or if the contrast between the subject and the background is high, yo u can adjust the brightness using the exp osure compensatio n feature. Y ou can adjust the exposure between +2.
33 1 T aking Pict ures Changing ISO sensitivities Setting ISO sensitivity at a high level is effective in t aking pictures of the subject in dark or low-lighting conditions. How ever , the picture may contain noise or become grainy . Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode.

35 1 T aking Pict ures When brightn ess of subject and backgr ound dif fers 5 T aking pictures of a backlit subject may result in darkened faces or other foregroun d objects. Using the spo t metering in su ch situa tions will ensure that the subject is clear rega rdless of the background lig ht.
When brightness of subject and backgr ound differs 5 36 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [ n ] and press the OK/MENU button. The spot m eterin g is set. Press the OK/MENU butt on again to exit the menu. T ake the picture using spot metering. c Position the subject in the center of the frame and press the shutter button halfway .
37 1 T aking Pict ures T aking close-up pictures & Use the macro mode when you want to shoot a close up of the subject, for example when taking a picture of a flower . With the macro mode, you can take pictures as close as 20 cm (7.8 in.) to the subject.
Taking close-up pictur es & 38 1 T aking Pict ures Setting up Super macro mode % Select the super macro mo de to take pictures as close as 8 cm (3.1 in.) to the subject. The lens will be set to T (T elephoto) and the flash will not operate. Press ( & ) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [ % ].
39 1 T aking Pict ures Using self-timer Y In the sel f-timer mode, the picture is taken approximate ly 12 se conds after the shutter button is pressed. Y ou are recommended to stabilize the camera by using a tripod . Press ( Y ) repeatedly in shooting mode to select [ Y ON].
40 1 T aking Pict ures T aking successive pictures j This function allows you to take a rapid succe ssion of still pictures a t approximately 1.3 frames per secon d (7 pictures in [SHQ] mode) by keeping the shutter button pressed.
Taking successive pictures j 41 1 T aking Pict ures Press or to select [ j ] and press the OK/MENU button. The successive pictu re shooting is set. Press the OK/MENU butt on again to exit the menu. T ake the pictures. Press the s hutter button fu lly and keep it pr essed .
42 1 T aking Pict ures Panoramic shooting Y ou can take advant age of the panoramic shooting featur e with the Olympus xD-Picture Card. The panoramic shooting le ts you connect pictures with overlapping edges into a single panoramic picture, using the OL YMPUS Master software contained in the CD-ROM provided.
Panoramic shooting 43 1 T aking Pict ures On the monitor , use the arrow p ad to choose the direction you want to t ake the pictures in. : T akes pictures from lef t to right . : T akes pict ures from ri ght to le ft. : T akes pictures from bott om to top.
Panoramic shootin g 44 1 T aking Pict ures Make sure that the edges of the pictures overlap, then t ake your pictures. Use the frames at the edge s of the screen as a guide when composing you r pictures. The first and second shot s are tak en so that they overlay part A.
45 1 T aking Pict ures S titching together two pictures / This function allows you to positi on two pictures taken in succession next to each other and store them as a sing le picture. Y ou can combine two different subjects in one picture. Press the OK/MENU button in shooting mode ( K ).

47 1 T aking Pict ures Recording sound with still pictures R This func tion let s you re cord sound w hen taking a still picture. Recording begins abo ut 0.5 seconds after pressing the shutter button and lasts for about 4 seconds. When this function is ena bled, sound is automatically recorded af ter each pict ure is taken .

54 2 Vi e w i n g Rot ating pictures y Pictures taken when the camera is held vertically are disp layed horizontally . In playback mode, display the picture you want to rot ate. Press the OK/MENU button. The top menu is displ ayed. Press to go to [MODE MEN U].
Rotating pictur es y 55 2 Vi e w i n g Press or to select the [PLA Y] t ab. Press to go to the [PLA Y] menu. Press or to select [ y ]. Press to go to the rotation display settings. Press or to select [+90°] or [–90°]. The picture is rot ated and displayed.
56 2 Vi e w i n g Displaying pictures one af ter another m This function automaticall y displays the pictures in order (slideshow). For movies, on ly the first frame is displayed. Press the OK/MENU button in playback mode. The top menu is displayed. Press to start the slideshow .
57 2 Vi e w i n g Recording sound with pictures t aken R This func tion le ts yo u re cord sound to the stil l pictures already taken, or renew recorded sound. Recording time for each picture is for about 4 secon ds. Play back the picture you wish to add sound to in playback mode.

59 2 Vi e w i n g Playing back movies q This function lets you play back movies on the camera’s monitor . When t he pl ayback mo de is activat ed, the last picture recorded is played back on the monito r . Follow the instruction s below to select a picture with n mark and play it back.

Playing back movies q 61 2 Vi e w i n g Creating an index The camera automatically selects nine frames from the movie and stores as still pictures, enabling you to see the conte nt of the movie at a glance. Select a movie with n and play it back. Press the OK/MENU button.

63 2 Vi e w i n g Playback on a TV Y ou can play back pictures on a TV . Use the A V cable provided with the camera to connect the camera to the TV . Select NTSC or P AL according to your TV video signal system.
Playback on a T V 64 2 Vi e w i n g Press or to select [NTSC] or [P AL] and press the OK/MENU button. The video signal system is set. Press the OK/MENU butt on again to exit the menu. T urn the camera and the TV off. Plug the A V cable into the Multi- connector on the camera.
Playback on a TV 65 2 Vi e w i n g T urn the TV on and switch to the video input mode. For informa tion on the vi deo inpu t mode, ref er to you r manual o f the TV . Press the POWER switch to turn the camera on. The picture is dis played on the TV . Operate t he came ra in t he same way as no rmal pl ayback to dis play pi cture s on your T V .
66 2 Vi e w i n g Displaying shooting information This function chan ges the shooting in formation displ ayed on the monito r . The shoo ting in form ation i s displa yed for approxi mately 3 secon ds. Press the OK/MENU button in the playback mode. The top menu is displ ayed.
67 2 Vi e w i n g Editing pictures Creating sof t focus pictures This function enables you to add soft focus effect s to the selected pictures and store them as new pictures. By using soft focus ef fect s, you can change your picture to a v i gnette picture to g ive a fantastic atmosph ere.
Editing pictures 68 2 Vi e w i n g Press or to select [SOFT FOCUS]. Press to go to the sof t focus picture settings. Press or to select [SOFT FOCUS]. Press the OK/MENU button to create the sof t focus picture. Once the soft focus p icture is created, it is stored as a new pictu re.
Editing pictures 69 2 Vi e w i n g Creating fish-eye pictures This function enables you to add fi sh-eye view effect s to the selected pictures and store them as new pictures. When the fish-eye view mode is selected, the picture is transforme d into a spherical picture.

Editing pictures 71 2 Vi e w i n g Creating black and white pictures This function enables you to convert selected pictures into black and white pictu res and store them as ne w pictures. While in playback mode, display the picture you want to convert into black and white pictures.

Press the OK/MENU button to create the black and white picture. Once the black an d white pict ure is crea ted, i t is stored as a new picture.
Editing pictures 73 2 Vi e w i n g Creating sepia-tone pictures This function enables you to convert selected pictures into sepia-to ne pictures and store them as ne w pictures. While in playback mode, display the picture you want to convert into sepia color .
Editing pictures 74 2 Vi e w i n g Press or to select [SEPIA]. Press to go to the sepia-tone picture settings. Press or to select [SEPIA]. Press the OK/MENU button to create the sepia-tone picture. Once the sepia-t one picture is created , it is stored as a new pictu re.
Editing pictures 75 2 Vi e w i n g Changing the resolution Q This function enables you to change the resolution of selected pi ctures and store them as new pictures. This is useful when you want to reduce the volume of picture data, such as when posting pictures on the Internet or attaching them to e-mail.

Once the picture is resi zed, it is stored as a new picture. A new picture cannot be created if the card is full.
77 2 Vi e w i n g Protecting pictures 0 Y ou can protect important pictures to avoid accidentally erasing th em. Protected pictures cannot be erased by th e singl e-frame or all- fram e erase fu nction . Format ting er ases bot h unprot ected an d prote cted p ictur es.

90 3 Setting Up Checking the picture you have just t aken REC VIEW lets you check the picture you have just ta ken on the monitor . The picture is displayed for a few seconds between shots, letting you check each picture as it is taken.
