Shooting still pictures Set the mode dial to h , P , A / S , M , r , g or s , and lightly press the shutter button (halfway). The green lamp lights when the focus and ex posure are locked (focus lo ck).
EN 11 Button operations Record ing movies Set the mode dial t o n , and press the s hutter button halfway to l ock the focus, and then press the shutter button completely to start recording.
12 EN Button operations Press h / < in shooting m ode to select [ON] or [OFF] for the digital i mage stabilization. Press o to set. Still picture shooting mode: Shooti ng with digital image stabilization This function reduces th e blur incurred by camera moveme nt or subject movement when taking pictures.
EN 13 Button operations The camera determines the optimum settings and shoots th e picture. The camera automatically sets the opt imum aperture value and shutter speed for the brigh tness of the subject. Changing the apertu re value for shooting pictures Press sr after pressing s F .
14 EN Button operations To take long exposure (bulb) shots Press r to set shutter speed to BULB. The shutter remains open as lon g as the shutter button is pressed. (The maximum time that it can remain open is 8 m inutes.) This mode allows you to set each shooting function manua lly and use as your original s hooting mode.

16 EN Button operations Checking the time While the camera is off, p ress DISP./ E to display the set alarm t ime (when [ALARM CLOCK] is set) and the current time for 3 seconds. Displays the top me nu. Select scenes, playback picture , and the items on the menus.
EN 17 Button operations Press q # in shooting mode to s elect the flash mode. Press o for setting. • T o take a picture with the flash, press # . EN 21 Menu operations Movie image quality It restores shooting funct ions back to default settings. Th e mode dial must not be set t o g . Functions for returning the settings to the original when the reset function is executed Image quality/Iamge size Number of frames SHQ 640 × 480 30 frames/sec.
22 EN Menu operations The scene selection screen displays sample ima ges and the shooting mo de to best suit th e situation. It can be set only when the mo de dial is set t o s . • By switching to the other scene, most settings will be changed to the default settings of each scene.
EN 23 Menu operations When [PRESET] is selected Press sr to select a white balanc e setting, then press o . When [ V ] is sel ected • With the [ONE TOU CH WB] screen displayed, point the camera at a sheet of white paper. Po sition the paper so that it fills t he screen, making sure there are no shadows.
24 EN Menu operations When [BKT] is selected This function allows yo u to zoom up to 15x by combinin g the optical zoom and image cro pping. • [IMAGE QU ALITY] is limited to below [2048 × 1536]. The digital zoom ca n be used to take close-up p ictures with stronger magnifica tion than the optical zoom.
EN 25 Menu operations When [AREA] is selected • T o move the AF target mark Press the arrow pad (the AF target mark is displayed in green). Y ou can take pictures w hile in this status. • T o set the position of the AF target mark Hold down o . T o change the position of the mark, hold down o again.
26 EN Menu operations Adjusts the amount of light emitted by the flash in the following situations: Shooting small subjec ts / Distant backgrounds / Situations when increased contrast is de sired Press sr to adjust, and press o .
EN 27 Menu operations Allows you to crea te a panoramic picture, usi ng the OLYMPUS Master software from the provided CD-ROM. An Olympus xD-Picture Card is re quired for panorama shooting. Use the arrow pad to specif y at which edge you want to conne ct the pictures, and then compose your shots so that the edg es of the pictures overl ap.
28 EN Menu operations • This function may not work effectively with some shooting conditions or subjects. • If you will be taking pictures over a long peri od, make sure to use fully charged batteries or the AC adapter . CONTRAST .................
EN 29 Menu operations • If any of the following operati ons occur during sleep mode, the camera cancels the timelapse mode and returns to normal shooting. Opening the battery comp artment cover , opening the card cover , connecting the camera to a computer , operating the shutter button, arrow pad or other button.

EN 31 Menu operations Operations during movie playback • Press o to pause the playback. Operations during pause • T o resume the movie, press o . • T o cancel the playback of the movie in the middle of it or during pause, press m . Allows you to play back the pictures in a calendar format by the date of recording.
32 EN Menu operations Allows you to edit still p ictures saved on a card and store them as new pictures. Adjusts the pictures rec orded in raw data format and stores th em as new pictures in JPEG forma t. Items that can be set with [RAW DATA EDIT]. * Available only when the picture is taken with [WB] set to [ V ].
EN 33 Menu operations Allows you to select the fra me, and synthesize the frame and the picture, and store it as a new picture. • Select a frame with pq and press o . • Select the picture to be synthesized with the frame with pq , and press o . (Press sr to turn the picture 90 degrees clockwis e or 90 degrees counterclockwise.
34 EN Menu operations Allows you to control the tone of the wh ole picture so that the dark part becomes bright er and store it as a new picture. Allows you to adjust the brightness of the picture, and st ore it as a new picture. • Select the picture with pq , and press o .
EN 35 Menu operations Allows you to save printing d ata (the number of prints and the date and time information) with the pictures stored on the ca rd. g “Print sett ings (DPOF)” (P. 49 ) Protected pictures cannot be erase d with [ERASE]/[SEL.IMAGE]/[ALL ERASE], but they are all erased by formatting.
36 EN Menu operations Sound is recorded for about 4 s econds. •U s e pq to select a picture, and use sr to select [YES] to record. • The [BUSY] bar is displayed. Pictures recorded to the card can be organized by sorting them into albums. Pic tures stored in the internal memory cannot b e entered in albums.
EN 37 Menu operations Protected pictures cannot b e erased. Cancel protection before eras ing protected pictures. Once erased, pictures cannot b e restored. Check each picture before e rasing to avoid accidentally erasing pictures you want to keep. • When erasing the picture in the internal memory , do not insert a card into the camera.

40 EN Menu operations Insert the optional card in to the camera. Copying data does not e rase the picture in the internal memory. • It takes some time to back up dat a. Check if the battery is not empty before starting the copy , or use the AC adapter .
EN 41 Menu operations File names and thei r folder names fo r recorded pi ctures are automat ically generated by the camera. File names and folder names r espectively include file number s (0001 to 9999) and folde r names (100 to 999), and ar e named as follows.
42 EN Menu operations The date and time is sav ed with each image, and is used in the file name. • The first two digits of [Y] are f ixed. • The time is displayed in the 24-hour format. • T o set the time precisely , with the cursor at either [M] or [Y/M/D], press o as the time signal strikes 00 seconds.
EN 43 Menu operations Operating, shutting off and checking the alarm • Operating the alarm: Tu rn off the camera. The alarm only operates when the camera is off. • Shutting off the alarm: While the alarm is sounding, press any button to shut off the alarm and turn off the camera.
44 EN Menu operations Press DISP./ E in shooting mode to display the frame assist and determi ne the type of frame assist. Press DISP./ E in shooting mode to display the histogram. • When set to [DIRECT], the black and white areas are displayed directly on the picture.

46 EN Printing pictures Printing pictu res Printing pictures By connecting the camera to a PictBridge-compatible print er, you can print out pictures d irectly. Select the pictures you wan t to print and the number of prints on the camera’s monitor.
EN 47 Printing pictures 3 Press h / < . • Printing starts. • When printing is finished, the picture selection screen is displ ayed. T o print a nother picture, press pq to select a picture, and press h / < . • When you are finished, di sconnect the USB cabl e from the camera with the pict ure selection screen displayed.
48 EN Printing pictures 3 Make the print settings ac cord ing to the operation guide. Note • If the [PRINTP APER] screen is not displayed, [SIZE], [BORDER LESS] and [PICS/SHEET] are set to the standard. Press pq to select the picture you want to print.
EN 49 Printing pictures 4 Select [OK], and press o . • Printing starts. • When pri nting is finish ed, the [PRINT MODE SELE CT] screen is displayed. To cancel printing 5 In the [PRINT MODE SELECT] screen, press m . • A message is displayed. 6 Disconnect the USB cable from the camera.
50 EN Printing pictures Pictures with print reservati ons can be printed using the follo wing procedures. Printing using a DPOF-compatibl e photo store. Y ou can print th e pictures using the print r eservation data. Printing using a DPOF-compatibl e printer.
EN 51 Printing pictures 6 Select [SET], and press o . Reserves all the pictures stored on the card. The number of print s is set at one print per picture. 1 Press m in the playback mode and display the top menu. 2 Select [PRINT ORDER] [ U ], and press o .
52 EN Using OL YMPUS Ma ster Using OLYMPUS M aster Using OL YMPUS Master Using the USB cable provide d with your camera, you ca n connect the camera and com puter and download (transfer) the images to y our computer using the OLYMPUS Master software, a lso provided with the camera.
EN 53 Using OLYMPUS Master Before installing the OLYMPUS Master software, pl ease confirm that your computer is compatible with the following system requirements. For newer operating systems, please refer to th e Olympus web site as shown on the back cover of this manual.
54 EN Using OL YMPUS Ma ster 2 Click “OL YMPUS Master”. • The QuickTime installation screen is displayed. • QuickTime is required to use OL YMPUS Master. If the QuickTime screen is not displayed, QuickTime 6 or later is already installed on the comput er .
EN 55 Using OLYMPUS Master Macintosh 1 Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. • The CD-ROM window is disp layed. • If the CD-ROM windo w is not displayed, double- click the CD-ROM icon on the desktop. 2 Double-click on the desired l anguage folder .
56 EN Using OL YMPUS Ma ster Note • The camera functions are disabled while the camera is connected to a computer . • Connecting the came ra to a computer via a USB hub may cause unstable op eration. In this case, do not use a hub, but connect the camera directly to t he computer .
EN 57 Using OLYMPUS Master To exit OLYMPUS Master 1 Click “Exit” on the main menu. • OL YMPUS Mast er is exited. 1 Click “T ransfer Images” on the OL YMPUS Master main menu. • The menu for selecting th e source is displayed. 2 Click “From Camera” .
58 EN Using OL YMPUS Ma ster 2 Make the following prep arations for disconnecting the USB cable. Windows 98SE 1 Double-click the “My Computer” icon and ri ght-click the “Removable Disk” icon to display th e menu. 2 Click “Eject” on th e menu.
EN 59 Using OLYMPUS Master T o view a movie 1 Double-click the movie thumbnail that you want to see in the “Browse” window . • OL YMPUS Master switches to view mode and the first frame of t he movie is displayed. 2 T o play back the movie, click the pl ayback button at the bottom of the screen.

Before turning it o n again, wait u ntil the camera a djusts to the surrounding temperatur e and dries ou t. * W hen it is cold outside, the wate r vapor in the air is rapidly cooled and turns to d roplets of water .
64 EN Getting to know your camera better • Under certa in types of cond itions, it i s difficult t o focus using au to focus. The g reen lamp on the monitor lights, allowing you to check if the focus is locked.
EN 65 Getting to know your camera better Increasing the ISO sens itivity • When you inc rease the [ ISO] setti ng, “noi se”, wh ich appear s as spots o f unwanted c olor or unevenne ss in the color, can be introduced and give the picture a grain y appearance.

EN 69 Getting to know your camera better How to read the histogram 1 If the peak f ills too much of the frame, th e image will appear mostly bl ack. 2 If the peak f ills too much of the frame, th e image will appear mostly white. 3 The part indica ted in green in the histogra m shows the luminance distributi on within t he AF target mark.
70 EN Getting to know your camera better The size of the picture displayed on a computer scre en changes dep ending on the computer settings. Wh en the monit or setting is 1,0 24 × 768 and you are u sing Internet Ex plorer to view a picture wi th an image si ze of 2,048 × 1,536 at 100 %, the entire picture cann ot be viewed without scrolling.
EN 71 Getting to know your camera better This card cannot be used in this camera. Or , the card is not formatted. Format or replace the card. • Select [POWER OFF ] and press o . Insert a new card. • Select [FORMA T] [YES ] and press o . All data on the card is erased.

Wipe the came ra with the d amp cloth an d then dry it with a dry cloth. If you ha ve used the camera at the beach, use a cl oth soaked in clea n water and wrung well.
EN 77 Miscellaneous • Lithium battery pack (CR-V3) and manga nese (zinc-carbon) ba tteries cannot be used. • Power consumption b y the camera var ies dependin g on which functi ons are used. • During the conditi ons described below, power i s consumed cont inuously and the batteries be come exhausted qu ickly.
78 EN Miscellaneous Using the interna l memory or card You can confirm on the monitor whether the in t ernal memory or card is being used during shooting and playback operation s. 1 T urn off the camera. 2 Open the card cover . Insert ing the card 3 Orient the card as shown, and insert it into the card slot as shown in the illustration.
EN 79 Miscellaneous 4 Close the card cover . Note • The card access lamp blinks while the camera is reading the images. Reading of images may take some time. Do not open the battery compartm ent cover/card cover while the card access lamp is blinking.
80 EN Miscellaneous Read All Instructions — Before you use the product, read all operating instructions. S ave all manuals and documentation for future reference. Cleaning — Always unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use only a damp cloth for cleaning.
EN 81 Miscellaneous Keep young children and infants away from the camera. • Always use and store the camera out of the reach of young children and infants to prevent the following dangerous situations which could cause serious inju ry: • Becoming entangled in the camera strap, causing strangulation.

Batteries may become hot during prolonged use. • Always unload the battery from the camera before storing the camera for a long period. • If NiMH batteries are not charged within t he specified time, stop charging them and do not use them.
