1 VOICE&MUSIC DM-1 Thank you for purchasing the Olympus Digital V oice Recorder DM-1. Please read these instructions for information about using the product correctly and safely . Keep the instructions handy for future reference. T o ensure successful recordings, we recommend that you test the record function and volume before use.
2 ● Do not leave the recorder in hot, humid locations such as inside a closed automobile under direct sunlight or on the beach in the summer . ● Do not store the recorder in places exposed to excessive moisture or dust. ● Do not use organic solvents such as alcohol and lacquer thinner to clean the unit.
3 AC Adapter W arning • Do not attempt to disassemble, repair or modify the AC adapter in any way . • Keep foreign objects including water , metal, or flammable substances from getting inside the product. • Do not moisten the AC adapter or touch it with a wet hand.

7 SmartMedia SmartMedia What is SmartMedia? SmartMedia is a type of removable IC memory card. With more memory than a floppy disk, SmartMedia cards facilitate data exchange with personal computers, and can be used to store data.
8 Write-protect SmartMedia A write-protect seal (supplied with SmartMedia card) can be attached to a SmartMedia card to guard against accidental recording, erasing, and formatting. Attach the write-protect seal to the write-protect area to prevent valuable data from being erased accidentally .

11 Using the AC Adapter Using the AC Adapter / Switching Between the V oice Recorder and Music Player Plug the optional AC adapter (Olympus Model A321 or A322) into household power outlet and connect the power plug to the recorder ’ s power connector (DC 3 V) as shown in the illustration.

14 Setting T ime/Date If you have set the time and date, information as to when an audio or a music file is recorded is stored automatically with that file. The time and date should be set to ease file management tasks. The time and date setting is also needed to perform the alarm playback function ( → P .

16 Installing Software Installing Software 1 Insert Olympus V oice & Music DM-1 Utility Software into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program will start automatically . Once the program starts, jump to step 4. If it does not, follow the procedures in steps 2 and 3.
17 Installing Software 9 Select the software to install. Check the check box for the necessary software, then click on <Next>. Note If the DSS Player and MusicMatch Jukebox software are already installed, the check boxes will be checked. If you uncheck the boxes, the software may be deleted.
18 Installing Software Installing Software 17 Copy files. W ait until DSS Player is installed on your PC, then click on <Finish>. 18 Install MusicMatch Jukebox. If you selected <Custom> and unchecked the music utility check box, skip to step 31.
19 Installing Software 23 Set the Install Option. If you would like to set up a special environment to meet your needs, check <Custom>. If you don't want to make any changes, check <Express [recommended]>. Then click on <Next>. If you checked <Express [recommended]>, skip to step 29.

21 Recording The recorder provides three folders, A , B , and C , and each message recorded in a folder is saved as a Digital Speech Standard (DSS) file.
22 VOICE Listening While Audio Is Recorded (Recording Monitor) Insert the earphone into the earphone jack to monitor what is being recorded. (The volume is fixed.) Pause Recording Pause Press the REC button while recording. ➥ “ REC P AUSE ” will flash on the display .
23 VOICE Microphone Sensitivity MENU IN D E X /E Q REC STOP E R A S E MICSENS CONF DICT Using the MICSENS switch, choose between the CONF and DICT positions. CONF : High-sensitivity mode that records sounds in all directions. DICT : Low-sensitivity mode suited for dictation.

The menu opens ( → P .33). 2 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to open the VCV A setup screen. 3 Press the PLA Y button. 25 VOICE 7 8 M E N U INDEX/EQ REC STO P ERASE 7 Press the REC button to start recording. When the sound volume is lower than the preset pause sound level, recording automatically pauses after approximately 1 second, and “ ST ANDBY VCV A ” flashes on the display .
26 VOICE Recording Modes 1 Press the MENU button. “ REC MODE ” will be displayed on the screen ( → P .33). 2 Press the PLA Y button. The recording mode setup process begins. 3 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to choose between SP and LP . 4 Press the PLA Y button to complete the setup process.
27 VOICE Index Marks Index Marks Index marks can be incorporated into a file during recording or playback to make it easy to locate interesting information. Index marks enable faster access to important information by pressing the FF/+ or REW/ – button.
28 VOICE Playing Playing 1 Press the FOLDER button to choose a folder . 2 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to choose the file that you want to play*. The time and date when the file was recorded are displayed for approximately 2 seconds. 3 Press the PLA Y button to start playback.
29 VOICE Playing Playback Functions Skip a File While Playing It Press the FF/+ button while playing a file. ➥ The recorder skips to the beginning of the next file and starts playing it*. Press the REW/ – button while playing a file. ➥ The recorder skips to the beginning of the current file and starts playing it*.
30 VOICE Erasing Erasing Erasing One File at a T ime A selected file can be erased from a folder . 1 Press the FOLDER button to choose a folder . 2 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to choose the file you want to erase. 3 Press the ERASE button. “ FILE ERASE? ” flashes on the display for approximately 8 seconds.
31 VOICE Erasing Erase All Files from a Folder All files in a folder can be erased simultaneously , except for locked files ( → P .32). 1 Press the FOLDER button to choose the folder in which you want to erase all files. 2 Press the ERASE button for 3 seconds or longer .
32 VOICE Locking Files Locking Files 1 Press the FOLDER button to choose a folder . 2 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to choose the file you want to lock. 3 Press the MENU button. The menu opens ( → P .33). 4 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to open the locking screen.
33 VOICE Menu List (VOICE MODE) Menu List (VOICE MODE) Notes • If you press the STOP button, the REC button, or the MENU button during a menu setup operation, the recorder will stop and apply the items that were set to that point.
34 Using DSS Player By connecting the DM-1 to your PC, you will be able to use DSS Player in the following ways: • T o play the voice files from your PC.
35 Using DSS Player 1 Once the Online Help screen appears, click on the Contents tab. 2 Double-click on the icon of the desired topic heading. The title of the topic is displayed. 3 Double-click on the icon of the desired topic. An explanation of the topic is displayed.
36 Be sure to finish installing DSS Player before connecting the DM-1. If you connect the DM-1 before installing DSS Player , the “ Add New Hardware Wizard ” dialog box will open. If this happens, click on [Cancel] to exit the wizard, then install DSS Player .
37 Disconnecting from Y our PC With Windows 98/98 SE 1 Confirm that the record/play indicator lamp on the DM-1 is not flashing. Right-click on the Removable Disk icon in My Computer and select [Eject]. 2 Disconnect the USB connecting cable. With Windows Me/2000 1 Click on the on the task bar located at the lower-right corner of the screen.
38 Running DSS Player 1 Start Windows. 2 Connecting the DM-1 to your PC. For the connection procedure, refer to “ Connecting to Y our PC ” ( → P .36). 3 Click on the [Start] button. 4 Point to <Programs>, then choose “ Olympus DSS Player 2000 for DM-1 ” .
39 About automatic startup By connecting the DM-1 to your PC, you can automatically start an application. If you have DSS Player installed, it will start up automatically . If you have a music utility installed, regardless of whether you have DSS Player installed or not, MusicMatch Jukebox will automatically start.
40 Import V oice Files to Y our PC Importing voice files to your PC from the DM-1 is called downloading. With DSS Player , there are three ways to download voice files to your PC: • Download Selected Files Download one or several voice files to your PC.
41 Import V oice Files to Y our PC 3 Download the voice file. From the [Download] menu, click on [Download Selected Files]. 4 Download complete. Once the transmission screen closes and the record/play indicator lamp on the DM-1 goes dark, the downloading is completed.
42 MUSIC Using the DM-1 as a Music Player / Using MusicMatch Jukebox Using the DM-1 as a Music Player The DM-1 can be used as a music player to play MP3- or WMA-format music files downloaded onto the SmartMedia card. In order to download music files on to the DM- 1, use the included MusicMatch Jukebox.

44 MUSIC T ransferring Music Files to the DM-1 1 Start Windows. 2 Connecting the DM-1 to your PC. For the connection procedure, refer to “ Connecting to Y our PC ” ( → P .36). Once connection is completed, MusicMatch Jukebox will automatically start up.
45 MUSIC T ransferring Music Files to the DM-1 6 T ransmission complete. Before disconnecting the DM-1 from your PC, refer to “ Disconnecting from Y our PC ” ( → P .37). T ransferring a sample music file to the DM-1 1 Add “ If Y ou're Gone (clip).
46 MUSIC Music Playback Music Playback 1 Plug the earphone plug into the EARPHONE jack. 2 Press the FF/+ or REW/ – button to choose the music file that you want to play*. The filename and the length of the music track will be displayed. The display of the track length will change to “ 00M00S ” after approximately 2 seconds.
47 MUSIC Music Playback Notes • The bit rates for playback possible on the DM-1 are 32 kbps to 160 kbps for both the MP3 and WMA format. • When playing back a file with a bit rate below 64 kbps, the displayed time may not be accurate.

50 MUSIC Increasing the WOW effect The DM-1 has WOW , an audio processing technology that increases sound presence and bass quality . The level of the surround ef fect (SRS 3D) and the bass ef fect (T ruBass) may be individually adjusted through three levels of processing or turned of f.

52 MUSIC Menu List (MUSIC MODE) Notes • If you press the STOP button, the REC button, or the MENU button during a menu setup operation, the recorder will stop and apply the items that were set to that point. • The recorder will stop if you leave it idle for 3 minutes during a menu setup operation, when a selected item is not applied.

56 Never use any SmartMedia card other than one that has been formatted with this unit or with a CAMEDIA series Olympus digital camera. Other SmartMedia cards may not perform as expected. Notes • If no action is taken within 8 seconds after step 4, the menu will revert to the status of step 2.
57 Hold / Reset Reset If the display or the recorder acts strangely , lightly press the reset button in the battery compartment with the tip of a ballpoint pen or a similar object. Notes • Do not use a sharp object such as a needle. • The time/date setup process launches automatically when you press the reset button.
