23 Tips before you start taking pictures 2 Holding the camera Sometimes when you look at a pict ure you have take n, the contours of t he subject are blurred. This is often ca used by movement of the camera at the precise moment that t he shutter button is pressed.

You can also use an optional xD-Picture Card (refe rred to as “card” in this manual) to store pi ctures. The card has greater capa city than the int ernal memory, a nd so is abl e to store more pi ctures.

You can adjus t the ex posure in the range of ±2 .0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. When the setting is chan ged, you can check th e result on the monitor.
45 4 Additio nal shoot ing func tions At a sporting event… Use movie mode to capture the atmosphere by recording the cheers and applause alon g with the action. Or use sequential shooting mode to take a succession of shots of a goal and pick out the best ones later .

However, hig her values also introd uce electrica l noise into t he resulting picture, which may give it a grainy appearance.

Re cording starts about 0.5 seconds afte r the shutt er is released and lasts about 4 seco nds. When this function is en abled, sou nd is recorded aut omaticall y every time you take a picture.
59 4 Additional sho oting function s Noise reduction When shooti ng in dark pla ces, shutter sp eeds become sl ower as there i s less light focu sed on the CCD. During lon g exposures, signa ls are generated by parts of the CCD wh ere no ligh t is foc used and are recorded on the image as noise.
60 5P l a y b a c k With film-type cameras, you cannot see the pictures you have taken until the film has been developed. And aren’t you so metimes disappointed with the results when you do eventually see them? Pictures of blurred scenery or someone with their eyes shut.

72 5 Playbac k Playing back pictures on a TV Use the AV cable provided wi th the camera to play back recorde d images on your TV. You can play back both sti ll pictures and movi es on your TV.

74 5 Playbac k Displaying detailed shooting information This fu nction l ets you di splay deta iled shooti ng informat ion on th e monitor for approx. 3 seconds in the pl ayback mode. For de tails of the informa tion displayed, see “Monitor indi cations” (P.
75 5 Playback Protecti ng pictures You are recommended to protect import ant pictures to avoid acci dentally erasing th em. Protecte d pictures cannot be e rased by the single-f rame/all- frame erase fu nction, but the y are all eras ed by formatting.
76 5 Playbac k Copying pictures to a card (BACKUP) You can copy (backup) al l the ima ge data stored in the i nternal memory t o the card. Th e image dat a in t he internal me mory is not erased by cop ying it to the card . The optional card is required to use the backu p function.
77 5 Playback Erasing pictures This function erases recorded pictures. Pictures can be erase d either one at a time or all the pict ures in the internal memory or ca rd at once. • W hen you want to erase pictures in the inte rnal memory , do not insert the card.

80 6 Setti ngs One of the key features of a digita l camera is that you can view the pictures you have taken immediately. But that isn’t all. For example, you can set the startup screen so that one of the pictures you have taken is displayed when you turn th e camera on.
81 6 Settings Saving camera settings (ALL RESET) This funct ion lets you choo se whether or not to save the current camera settings aft er the power i s turned off. The settings af fected by [ALL RESET] are listed bel ow. The [ALL RESET] set ting ([ON]/[OFF]) applies to all modes.

85 6 Settings Viewing pictures immediately (REC VIEW) You can choose whet her or not to display t he picture you have just taken on the monitor. ON This displa ys the p icture while it is being record ed. This is us eful for maki ng a brie f check of the pictu re you have ju st tak en.

87 6 Settings Setting the playbac k volume (VOLUME) You can adjust the sound volume of stil l pictur es and movies as well as the volume of the sound generated when the power is turn ed on. There are 5 levels to choose from. Top menu [MODE MENU] [SETUP] [VOLUME] g “How to use the menus” (P.
88 6 Setting s Resetting the file name (FILE NAME) The camera auto matically creat es file names and f older names for images to be stored in. Files can be numbe red from 00 01 to 9999 and fold ers can be numbered from 100 to 999. Examples are shown below.
89 6 Settings Checking the image processing function (PIXEL MAPPING) The pix el mappin g featur e allows the cam era to c heck and adjus t the CCD and image processin g fun ctions. It is no t neces sary to o perate th is func tion freq uently . Approxi mately onc e a year is recom mended.
90 6 Setting s Setting the date and time This functi on lets you set th e date and time. The date and time is saved with each picture, and is used in the fi le name.
91 7 Printing pictures You can print out the pictures you have taken either at a ph oto store or at home on your own prin ter. If you go to a photo store, it is a good idea to store the print reservatio n data on the card first. This lets you select the pictures you want to print and decide how many prints you want.
