20 2 Tips before you start taking pi ctures Tips before you start taking pictures Your pictures are almost guaranteed to come out well just by setting the mode dial to K and pressing the shutter button. But occasionally, you can’t focus on yo ur subject, the subject is too dark, or the picture doesn’t come out the way you wan t.

22 2 Tips before you star t taking pictures If the correct focus cannot be obtained When the sub ject you wan t to focus on is no t in the cen ter of the frame and you cannot po sition the AF ta rget mark on it, you ca n focus the ca mera on another p oint at rou ghly the same distanc e (focus l ock) and take the picture as explai ned below.

Self-timer shooting 43 3 Basic shooting functions This funct ion lets you ta ke pictures us ing the self-ti mer. Fix the camera securely on a tripod for self-time r shooting . This functi on is useful fo r taking picture s when you want to be inclu ded in the photo graph.
44 3 Basic sh ootin g functi ons Recording movies This functi on allows you to record movies. During recording, the correct expo sure is automati cally maintai ned even if the subject moves, but the focus and zoom are loc ked. If the di stance to the subject chang es, you may lose foc us.
45 4 Additio nal shoot ing func tions Additional shooting functions Taking pictures like a p ro... Adjust the brightness or white balance of the picture, change the focusing a rea depending on the subject, and make use of other useful functions to create prof essional-like pictures.
46 4 Additiona l shooti ng functi ons Shooting pictures using image blur reduction This funct ion reduce s the blur incurre d by a moving subject or camera movement whe n taking pi ctures. 1 Take the picture. Note • When the camera mov es a lot or the subj ect is mov ing qui ckly, the reduc tion functio n may not operat e effectiv ely.
47 4 Additi onal shoo ting functi ons Changing the sh utter speed for shooting pictures This funct ion allows you to set the shutte r speed manuall y. The camera sets the apertu re automaticall y. Set the shutter speed acc ording to the subject and the typ e of effect you want.
48 4 Additiona l shooti ng functi ons Changing the aperture value fo r shooting pictures This function allows you to set the aperture manually. The camera sets the shutter speed automatically. By decreasing the aperture value (F-number), the camera will focus within a smaller range, producing a picture with a blurred background.
49 4 Additi onal shoo ting functi ons Changing picture bright ness In some situ ations, you may get better result s when the exposu re that the camera sets is compens ated (adju sted) manual ly. You can adj ust the exposure in the range of ±2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.

For instance , when daylight , the setting sun or tungsten ligh ting are reflected on white paper, the shade of white prod uced will be slight ly diff erent fo r each.

53 4 Additi onal shoo ting functi ons Changing ISO sensitivity (ISO) The higher the ISO, the better the camera ’s light sens itivity and abi lity to shoot in low li ght conditi ons. Howe ver, high sensiti vity intr oduces noise into the resulti ng picture, which may gi ve it a grainy appearance.

Re cording starts about 0.5 seconds afte r the shutt er is released and lasts about 4 seco nds. When this function is en abled, sou nd is recorded aut omaticall y every time you take a picture.

62 5P l a y b a c k With film-type cameras, you cannot see the pictures you have taken until the film has been developed. And aren’t you sometimes disappointed with t he results when you do eventually see them? Pictures o f blurred scenery or someone with their eyes shut.

Playing back pictures on a TV 78 5 Playback Use the provided AV cable to play back re corded images on your TV. You can play back both sti ll pictures and movies on your TV. 1 Make sure that the TV and camera are turned off. Con nect the multi-connecto r on the camera to the video input terminal on the TV using the provid ed AV cabl e.
Playing back pictures on a TV 79 5 Playback You can s elect [ NTSC] or [P AL] ac cordin g to your TV’s vide o signal type. Use this setting when pl aying ba ck picture s on a TV in a foreign co untry. S elect the [VIDEO OUT] sig nal befor e connect ing th e AV cable.
80 5 Playback Protecting pictures You are recommended to pro tect impo rtant pict ures to av oid acciden tally erasing them. Protect ed pictures cannot be erased by the single-frame/ all- frame erase funct ion, but th ey are all erased by formatti ng.
Erasing pictures 81 5 Playback This function erases recorded pictures. Pictures can be erase d either one at a time or all the pict ures in the internal memory or on the card. 1 Select the pi cture yo u want to erase, and press the S button. g “Dire ct butt ons” (P .
